Today, students worked hard! They started the day by developing their sub questions for their inquiries into belief systems. After that, we have a productive book club session for Novel Approach. In math, they continued learning about algebra. In the afternoon they spent some time working on their digital photograph composition techniques and then ended the day with music.

You have been learning how to find the big idea of a story. I want to hear how you do this. What do you do to find the big idea? Do you use reading strategies? Which ones do you prefer to use usually? How do you end up with the big idea of the story? Use these questions to guide your paragraph today.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain how I find the big idea of a story.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:

1.) PARAGRAPH FORMAT: intro/body/conclusion
2.) GIVENS: Spelling, capitals, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation.
3.) BODY: Includes at least 2 supporting points and examples using the NOVEL APPROACH
strategies.
4.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Give one sentence as a reply to your original paragraph stating if you
met the criteria or if you need to improve.
5.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give at least one other student feedback to improve.
6.) REVISION: Post your revised/improved version. This does not mean change a couple words or
simply copy and pasting what you wrote originally.

Novel approach how to find the Big idea. Firstly you need to find a book read it and take notes. Connections, visualizations, questions, inferences. Once you’re done the book you have to summarize the story to yourself. Think of what the big idea might be. Connections are things that connect you from the text or the story to your life or thing that you’ve heard of. Visualizations, in a part of the story where you can really visualize what the text saying you can write what you thought or saw usually when you visualize it’s a really good book, paragraph or sentence. Write down questions when you were stuck or don’t know what this means or what to do. Inferences are when you use some background knowledge and make a guess About what’s happening next in the story. Those are some things that you can do to help find a big idea.

First, you read the book and take notes as you go. These notes can be anything like questions, connections, or visualizations. These are some things that can help you find the big idea but how do they? Connections can help because you know what its felt like in that type of situation and it can help you understand what the story is about more. Visualizations can help because using your imagination, you can picture the area and what the main character is doing. Next, you can get feedback from others of what you have already wrote down. This way you can edit and revise what you have and make it a bit better. Lastly, you write out the big idea. These are the things I do to find the big idea. Some people might have other ways though. When you read a story, your most important goal is to find the big idea. I read a book called the Forbidden City by William Bell. There are strategies that could help you find the big idea which is to make as much connections and inferences that were related to something else in the book you're reading. Visualizations and Connections are a helpful way to find the big idea as it helps you make more imaginations and you will start immersing on your thoughts.

Another way to find the big idea is to ask for feedback if you made any strategies. Every time when we write a powerful response we have to choose our favourite strategies and when you selected your favourite strategy, you should ask for feedback so that your favourite strategy would be even more favourited. To start with, visible thinking is always one of the key things I do in order to understand to book and its deeper meaning; this may include asking questions, making comments, or writing down inferences of what is going to happen. By thinking visibly, it is much easier for a person to document their thoughts and reactions compared to simply storing it in their brain. Over the recent years, many students have been reading books without even considering the message within it, but that isn't the 'best' way to get the most out of a book. Then what is? Finding the Big Idea! During this year, Divisions 1 and 2 have learned about the impactful reading process, known as the Novel Approach. In simple terms, it's a collection of steps and strategies that guide readers toward the Big Idea (message) of a book. By using a combination of the background knowledge I've acquired from our lessons and my preferences, I have developed a method suitable for me that allows me to find the Big Idea of a book I'm reading. To begin, I usually write down my thoughts and usage of reading strategies as I'm reading. This helps to track my thinking in addition to remembering the strategies I used and their purpose. Specifically, the strategies that help improve my comprehension the most are monitoring comprehension, inferences, and especially connections. To illustrate, connections help me understand and associate with the characters/events more easily because I can connect them back to my own memories and experiences. Additionally, working on other assignments, such as Gift Of Words and Thinking & Learning Questions, are also essential steps to finding the Big Idea of a book. Since last year, we’ve been trying to find the big idea of each book for novel approach. I found the big idea for both picture books and non-picture books. I have some ideas of how I found it. First, the most useful strategy of mine is to share with my group members. Sharing what we learnt can really help to understand the book more. Second, I learnt that making questions will help, too. It can help you think deeper about it. Thirdly, making connections can help you know what the character in the book is feeling. It will give you an example of what they might be trying to do. Lastly, making a purpose can always help. It can give you an idea of what the book’s trying to tell you, which is known as the Big Idea. With these strategies, I can figure out what the book’s Big Idea is about.

There are a lot of things you need to do when reading a book. At the start you will need to set a purpose, why you are reading it. Then read over to understand it more, make connections, inferences, and ask questions. But one of the most important things is to know the big idea of the book, what the book is trying to tell you. I don't really read word books but I know how to find the big idea. First of all, read the book of course. You will need to read the book and then know what the whole story is. Then you are going to take it and think of what it is trying to teach you if it is time management, love your family, etc. Next, if you are going share your big idea with others you will need to provide evidence from text. You tell them you think the book is about blah blah blah, and why I think that is on page blah blah where it says blah blah. Last but not least, take other's feedback. When you share something and others think that there is something missing let them talk. Let them give you advice from their perspective. Maybe they have something that you would never ever think of on your own. These are the steps I know of how to write a big idea. All three steps are important and should be done in order, or else it would not be good.

Writing is a process. When a writer creates a story, what are their intentions? What message are they trying to send? It is our job, as the readers, to find out. But before you rush into it, you must ask yourself the question, "How?" Throughout the school year, we have learned and tried to figure out the answer. However, it is different for everyone. For me, I find that making connections and inferences are the most useful. This is because, to start with, connections help me better understand the situation, or what a character is feeling. To illustrate, if a character is sad that they lost a pet, I can connect to that, and empathize how the character feels. Furthermore, inferences help me, well, infer. To dive deeper, if I am unsure of a character's predicament or emotions, I can use text evidence and my background knowledge to help answer my question. These two strategies can help me understand the big idea of the story because I would be able to see their situation with more clarity, which would make it easier to decide it's significance in the story. Another important component of the Novel Approach that is useful to find the big idea is finding evidence from the text. Sure, you could simply state what you think the big idea is and provide a few reading strategies that you used, but there wouldn't be a lot of proof. What you need is solid quotes or events from the book. When you provide evidence, it helps the reader better see it's significance or meaning, and you also have more of a foundation to explain off of. Ultimately, the main things that I use to find the big idea of a story are connections, inferences, and evidence from the book. As Mr. Hong says, "BACK IT UP!"

SELF ASSESSMENT: I can be more concise to keep the reader's attention.

What are a writer's intentions when they write a book? What message are they trying to send? It is our job, as the readers, to find out. But before you rush into it, you must figure out how. Throughout the school year, we have learned and practiced our Novel Approach, so we may finally find the answer. However, it is different for everyone. For me, making connections and inferences are the most useful. To start with, connections help me better understand the situation, or what a character is feeling. To illustrate, if a character is blue because they lost a pet, I can empathize with them. Furthermore, inferences help me, well, infer, especially on a character's predicament. To dive deeper, if I am unsure of a character's predicament or emotions, I can use text evidence and my background knowledge to help answer my question. Connections and inferences can help me understand the big idea of a story because they help me see a situation with more clarity, which makes it easier to decide it's significance. Another component of the Novel Approach that is quite useful is text evidence. This plays a tremendous role in a powerful response. Sure, you could simply state the big idea and provide a few reading strategies that you used, but there wouldn't be a lot of proof. What you need are solid quotes and events from the book. When you provide evidence, it helps the reader better see it's significance or meaning. It also give you more of a foundation to explain the big idea. Ultimately, the main things that I use to find the big idea of a story are connections, inferences, and evidence from the book. As Mr. Hong so energetically says, "BACK IT UP!"

A big idea. Something you unveil when you discover something new of your interest. There are many ways of thinking of a bid idea but I would like to specifically explain mine. I figure out my big idea by looking back in the book and trying to figure out the main plot and what it is trying to teach me. I take acknowledgment of this and think very hard to find the big idea. I also use my reading strategies to help me understands the scenes ; using strategies such as visualizations, inferences, and monitoring my comprehension. Have you ever read book, and was confused about what the big idea might be? Well, if that has ever happened to you, the way I find the big idea of a book might be helpful. Firstly, to fully understand the book you will need to use the reading strategy's because it will help you figure out confusing parts in the book and help you find the big idea. Also, making connections like text to self, text to world, and text to text connections can help you find the big idea of the book you're reading. Lastly, you can also visualize what is happening in the book if you are puzzled or confused about what's going on in the book. This is how I find the big idea in a book

Since September, division 1 has been learning about the reading stratagies one of them is the big idea. Do you know what big idea means? No? Well, big idea means a lesson or a theme that the authour wants to send a messege or learn something. Do you want to know how i come to understand what the big idea is? Yes? Glad to hear! Firstly, i would go over the book to collect my background knowledge or make notes. Secondly, I would gather all my information and make my information into 3-4 sentences. We have been working on novel approach for the whole year. We started from song lyrics and poems to picture books and now we're reading novels. The purpose of doing novel approach and reading is to find the big idea. Well, how do we do that? We should be starting by setting a purpose. For example, getting a feel or understand the story. After setting the purpose we should read through the text and do some visible thinking. Visible thinking means showing what you are thinking on paper. During the visible thinking we used the reading strategies. Connections, purposes, monitor comprehension, inferences, questions ,etc. The reading strategies can make you push your own thinking. After visible thinking we can discuss the story with their peers or teachers so that you can hear other things that you might never thought of. Using your thinking you can improve yours, as soon as this is done you basically got the big idea. Remember you have to provide proof or evidence from the story or text. You should always back your thinking up. Last but not least you can right the big idea and the process of getting it into a powerful response. This is what a process of getting the big idea would look like.

A Big Idea is a large component to reading. it shows how much you understand a book you've read. Although, it takes a while to get all the small details and evidence from a book to generally form a Big Idea, so I ask myself, How do you get a Big Idea? To start with, Big Ideas form with evidence from the book your reading, without any evidence, nothing would make sense and everyone would think your a fool. For example, Alice in Wonderland is a great book, wonderful story and enjoyable characters, writing a Big Idea about that would be very difficult to do. Considering the books its queer and absurd plot, it definitely requires context and evidence. Aside from that, Big Ideas include some use of reading strategies, and if your not using them at all, then why are you even reading this paragraph? I personally think reading strategies should be included in Big Ideas, it shows how you learnt how to understand a phrase or word that you didn't before then. Reading strategies vary to using a dictionary to understand a certain phrase, inferring what a metaphor meant within the context of a book and simply reading it over again. I enjoy using all of these strategies, since they helped me quite a lot reading our book club novels. Finally, connections from the book in real life. Now, unless your a emotionless person, everyone can connect to a character within a book, or something something in our world right now! For example, I've seen quite a lot of novels about pollution and climate change, I connected this to what's happening with ice caps melting caused by climate change right now! In conclusion, you can see how a Big Idea is made, with all these small jigsaw puzzles connecting together so you can really see the big picture.

We’re looking for the ‘BIG IDEA’ of the book's simplest thing to find it or to know what it is.
First, you have to know how to use the Reading Strategies! Like Visualizing, Background knowledge, Visible thinking, and determine what’s important etc.
Firstly, you have to read the book first! You have to read it first before you will know the big idea. Then you’ll use the reading strategy while your reading, like you can visualize if you can’t understand, try to picture it in your mind then it will make you understand it.
Then you will start to think about it, and by thinking and reading you can find the ‘BIG IDEA’ of the book.
Secondly, you should make connections while reading, so the book will be more clear to you or make you understand even more. You should ask questions, to help you.
Last but not the least, i always use my background knowledge, i make connections on my book. I will re-read the book i don’t understand it, using my background knowledge helps me a lot.

To start off, the big idea of a book is kind of like the ‘big picture comcept’ that the author wants the reader to walk away with. I think some steps to finding the big idea would be reading strategies. For example, visualizations, connections, inferences, and questions are just one simple step to helping you find the main point of the book. You should atleast be able to make one or two connections, visualizations, questions, and inferences in the book. To illustrate, today during my groups book club session Mr. Hong pointed out that they bring up memories in the book and asked if anybody could connect and then said if any of us read “The Matchbox Diary” and at first I didn’t really know if I had connected to anything Mr. Hong said but right as he brought up the picture books I immediately remembered that “The Matchbox Diary” also had something to do with memories. Personally, I am not done reading “The Giver” yet but the connection I made today is giving me a clue to what I think the overall main point of the book is. Generally speaking, I think the one I would use most is connections there is always one connection you are able to make. For example, when we read “The Forbidden City” I thought I wouldn’t end up with any connections at all until they said that Alex was from Canada. Another reason to why I think connections is the most useful for me is because connections help you discuss different perspectives from the people in your group. To illustrate this, if I connected to this because the main character was born in Canada and I was also born in Canada somebody else could say they connected to that because they visted Canada or something like that. So, in conclusion, what do you think are some reading strategies to help you find the main point of a book?

The big idea of something. The big idea of a book lets say, a text that the author wants us to learn about, the big idea of a text, lesson, or theme. In my class, were currently doing something that's called novel approach, still on going. Where were chosen a book to read, to find out what it's about, the gifted words, and the big idea. The book that i've been given is called "survival strategies", about a girl that got abandoned at a gas station by her dad, and has a big responsibility to take care of herself, and her sister in order to survive. Overall, the big Idea that I think to this story is being independent and not relying on others. Since our main character, has to survive all on her own with her sister, I think it's a huge responsibility to hold on despite how she's just still a teenager. That's what I learned about what a big idea is. A text that the author wants us to understand.
