Mr. Collins teaching ADST!

Today, Mr. Collins taught you about computational thinking. He taught you the importance of following instructions by thinking logically and critically about what the instructions mean. You engaged in an active learning activity and participated in some self and peer assessment that pushed your learning forward. What you learned today will help you with your next ADST lesson with Mr. Collins next week. IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you haven't brought your money and field trip form for the 'ORPHEUM', and skating, please bring it tomorrow.

Today, you were taught an ADST (Applied Design, Skills and Technology) lesson by Mr. Collins.
In paragraph form, explain what you learned (learning intentions) and how you can connect what you were taught with something you may learn at school or at home.

Serve. Wow. That’s pretty easy. I can automatically put serve at the end because I know that it is basically always the final step when cooking.

Our lesson today from Mr. Collins is about INSTRUCTIONS. We were given multiple strips of paper that is a recipe for pancakes. We were supposed to put it in order of how we felt was correct. To see if it is correct we look for key words and use our logical think skills. We learned how to make a pancake. We also learned how following instructions can lead you to sucess. I can connect to this by following instructions. This applies at home, school, or anywhere. If you follow the instructions and criteria, you are bound to succeed.

So remember, always listen and follow the instructions!

Of course, following instructions is very important! And I'm sure we can all connect this to success we have experienced. We're going to be talking a lot next week about the importance of instructions, but breaking down the problem, and thinking of it in pieces like we did today is another skill that we will be focussing on.

In the ADST( Applied, design, Skills and Technology) class, I learnt a lot of things.

First, Mr. Collins showed us a picture. We started guessing what is that. After we knew it is pancake, Mr. Collins gave us a sheet. There're ingredients and different steps, they were all mixed up. Mr. Collins told us to try guessing the right steps of the pancake. We learnt how to use connections and common sense to figure out.

In now days, we always make connections and use common senses to figure out things. Mr. Collins in a great teacher, it is really fun in his class. I really want to know more about vegetarian too.

@adrian- from your post you can tell that you understood what the activity was. But I really think that you should first explain what the activity was and what we were doing. Also there are quit a few grammar mistakes, I recommend that you reread your post.

It’s interesting how everything is some how connected.

Today we learned a little more about what ADST ( Applied Design, Skills and technology) is. Our activity today was on organizing strips of paper that either had an instruction on it or ingredient in order to be a able to have a pancake recipe.

An ADST is basically applying your design skills through technology.

An example of that is when we did coding with one of the parent volunteers. We used our creativity skills to win the levels and code the game to make it do what you want.

Now you might be thinking “what does this have to do with ADST”? Well the thing is when you are coding for the first time you need instructions right? Well it’s the same case if you are making pancakes for the first time.

In conclusion everything and everyone is in some way connected and that some things are not as different as we think even if you are comparing making a pancake and coding.

Today we had interesting pancakes...... Oops?! I mean the ADST (Applied, Design, Skills, and Technology) lesson with Mr.Collin.

“Mr.Collin teaches us how important is it to follow the instructions based on figuring out the recipe for making pancakes.” We’re given a bunch of paper strips with either material or instruction for making a pancake. Our jobs are to use our technics and skills to help us find out the steps of making a pancake. For example, you can easily tell that “remove from the pan” and “serve” are usually the last steps of cooking so here we can leave it at another place so we don’t mess up. After we completed it using our special technics. We now exchange our recipe with another group and started to give feedback. In the end, we decided to figure out as a whole class. We shared our thoughts and ideas of what’s going when. Finally, we’ve figured out the final recipe for making a pancake!

I think this lesson went really well. I learned how important is it to work as a team following instructions. Not to mention, but I think the activity was really fun, just like learning while playing!

Today, Mr.colin taught us what is ADST in a fun way. I Learned a lot of things about ADST and a bit about Mr.Colin.
Firstly, Mr. Colin shows us a picture about some delicious food and introduced that this food called pancake. After, Mr.Colin set us in to eleventh group and gave us some scrip( about how to make pancake)and we take a coulour paper, talk about which one should go first, and which one should go last, and we glued it on to the coulour paper. I talk to my partner a lot, about should ingredients go first or should or something else go first, we have a lot of conversation during this small project, but me and my partner listen to others idea, so, I think this is called teamwork! After that, Mr. Colin let us gave to other groups people and give others feedback. And then, Mr. Colin let us sit on the carpet and talk about why this can connected to the ADST. I think it is very interesting because I knew that ADST is basically just code, and make connections to other things.
In conclusion, Inthink I learned a lot today.

Hi Anita,

I'm glad that you learned a lot today (both about me, and the work we were doing).

I really like that you did a lot of your work today by talking through the instructions. Its really important to keep these conversations about the lessons going so we can continue to learn through each other!

ADST has a lot to do with coding, but it is also a lot of other kinds of design too. Like sewing (with needle and thread), making food, and making tools and products. So it's good to remember to connect the coding that we're learning about to other subjects and other kinds of design.

Everything in the world requires steps and parts, whether it is doing a project, a book, an assignment, etc. In today’s case, Mr. Collins taught us the importance of instructions by using cooking recipes. One little misplacement of order can result in failure. That’s why we always have to be careful when reading instructions.

Today, Mr. Collins taught us our second ADST (Applied Design, Skills, and Technology) lesson. This one somewhat relates to coding, too! Coding requires you to be extra careful, in order to successfully code. We were required to put instructions on making a pancake in order, without seeing the recipe. Additionally, we had to separate all the directions with the ingredients. We used cues, logic, and connections to find the real recipe in pairs. Whether you got the recipe right or not, I think we all learned how important giving and reading instructions are!

In conclusion, being able to follow instructions is definitely a skill that needs to be mastered in order to succeed in life. Both giving and receiving directions are very important. Mr. Collins really taught us this in a very unique and interesting way!

At first, I had no idea what ADST was. As soon as Mr.Colins explained what it was and what it stands for in DETAIL I suddenly understood. Today I quite a few things based on the learning intention " I can listen to instructions and use strategies to list directions in order". For this project, we worked with partners and I learned how to cooperate with others. I also learned how to use my background knowledge to help order the directions. lastly, I learned how to make pancakes!

In conclusion, Mr.Colins did an excellent job of teaching us what ADST was!

Our great second teacher Mr. Collins briefly discussed the definition of the acronym ADST, the full name for this is known as applied skill design and technology. ADST is about details and piecing certain components together with understanding to accomplish a greater goal of creation. One cannot simply state that they want to create a machine; To make the machine, they would have to understand code and put different strings of code together, and they would have to piece together an outer shell to holster the machine; With time and understanding you can put together something great.

The concept of connection familiarizes us with our own mind. They way we all learn is by taking in information, and piece together the verdict based off of that. Say one is learning about fractions, the teacher who we shall dub Mr. Ihatelife states, "The numerator is always smaller than the denominator, this is known as a 'Proper Fraction'. If the numerator happens to be greater than the denominator, what would that be known as?". You take the information from the proper fraction using the definition of the term, and the term itself; By using your background knowledge of math and vocabulary, you should be able to piece together that the opposite of proper is improper; Therefore a fraction with a greater numerator would be known as a 'Improper Fraction'. By using the information provided to us, and the library of knowledge you have, you can piece together a logical verdict.

Mr. Collins started our small lesson with a picture of a meal he prepared using an online recipe; The end result of the meal turned out quite successful, and the meal looked quite famishing, and it seemed your hunger would be satisfyingly satiated as well. He described that he used 'instructions' and pieced together what he must do. Soon after he told us what our assignment was for the next hour. The LEARNING INTENTION for this small project was, "I can use my background knowledge, and the mixed up instructions to piece together a recipe to create pancakes". We were given a set of instructions, and had to think and rearrange each strip to make a complete recipe that seems logical. At the end we swapped our sheets with another group and gave them descriptive feedback based on our own sheet. After we all sat down and reviewed it to make a complete recipe.

I'm glad you're making the connection to design: that you cannot create a project just thinking about the end result, but that you have to break it down into the smaller bits. Just like if you were to build a machine from scratch, you need to know a lot more than just what it should look like, you will also need to know how the machine works, and to do that, you may need to know the code that runs it, or the math and science that helps it work. Whenever we design, we are always trying to think of the big task as all of the smaller tasks that put it together, and a lot of that takes the same kind of rearranging and logic as what we did in today's class.

Today Mr.Collins taught us our first ADST. We had to organize stripes of paper that had instructions of a pancake recipe. I learned lot of things. The first thing I learned was connecting things together makes a puzzle. The second thing I learned was teamwork was very important in this lesson.

Today we learned ADST, standing for Applied Design, Skills and Technology. Today we received a pancake recipe that was broken down into many steps that were randomly mixed. We were supposed to try and put the recipe together by using our background knowledge and logic. I can connect to this because this was all about instruction, which is a very important thing in coding. If you make a mistake, you could turn a pancake recipe into scrambled eggs (That totally didn't happen to me)!

I can connect to coding, because you need to put the code in order, for instance, you can't beat a game before starting. And if I got the recipy wrong for the pancakes, Mr. Collins will have a surprise when he uses the recipy to make his pancakes tomorrow morning for breakfast: a "milk-flavor- scrambled-eggs-with-some-flour-on-top-that-doesn't-taste-that-good..."

We used clues from the recipe, logic, and our background knowledge, like if you made pancakes before. I can connect to coding, because you need to put the code in order, for instance, you can't beat a game before starting. And if I got the recipe wrong for the pancakes, Mr. Collins will have a surprise when he uses the recipe to make his pancakes tomorrow morning for breakfast: a "milk-flavor- scrambled-eggs-with-some-flour-on-top-that-doesn't-taste-that-good..."

ADST...what is that and and what did we do today?

ADST is short for applied design skills and technology and today we learned a bit of it with Mr.Collins. The learning intention was to create a recipe and notice how it is similiar to coding and designing things online. First, Mr.Collins shared a story about how he made pancakes the night before and how there was a recipe that he had to follow. He explained that this is the same as coding because they are both instructions: An instruction for the computer to follow the code and for him to follow a recipe to get the goal at the end. I connect to this because sometimes when I see a lot of instructions at the beginning of some kind of worksheet, I think that it looks like a recipe and that we have to make/do something.

Basically, today's activity is connected to ADST because of the "instructions" part of it.

ADST is an exciting and significant subject when you grow up to work. It is valuable because it includes many basic skills such as listening to instructions. It is important to listen to instructions so you succeed your task.

Fortunately, we had an ADST in class today. In the ADST period, Mr. Collins taught us the importance of instructions. Everything in the world needs instructions, whether it is your homework or a baking recipe. He taught us how to follow instructions by using an example of a recipe. We were given strips of paper of the recipe, then we needed to put it in order. We searched for key words, then placed it in order. I also explained my thinking to my classmates. The learning intention in our ADST class today is that I can obey instructions to put together a recipe. No matter if you are right or wrong, the valuable thing we learned is to listen to instructions.

All in all, today’s class was very fruitful for me so I want to do it again. Following instruction is a skill needed to master so you can prosper.

Today, Mr.Collins tought us what ADST is, and how ADST works. And the lesson was all about the logic and what to do first like in a recipe book you have to put all the defections and ingredients in the right order so the whole thing can work!
This also has to do with coding, because coding is all about connecting your suroundings and making the right move when you need to and so in this class I learned how important instrutiions are!

Today, we learned how to make a pancake. I don’t exactly remember the name of it but Mr. Collins Gave us in envelope and told us to grab some construction paper. Inside the envelope were instructions on how to make a pancake except they were cut up and mixed together. Our job was to solve the puzzle and figure out the correct order of the instructions and glue it onto the construction paper. Then, we had to switch the construction paper with a group in front of us & compare our differences in our instructions. With our group, there ended up being a little problem with the other group but that was gladly solved.

Overall, that’s what we learned and I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the next ADST lesson.

In the ADST( Applied, design, Skills and Technology) we learned about the way of forming different method of solving problems using your own background knowledge which i have never thought about because if running into a problem trying to put together a recipe i would usually search it up online but why do that when using a little effort you can figure it out on your own
