Wednesday: HR MacMillan Space Centre!

Thank you to all the parent drivers who helped to make our field trip possible today! During our visit to the HR MacMillan Space Centre, we learned more about the dangers of space and the technology used to keep astronauts safe. We also participated in an informative game show that compared extreme environments on earth to extreme conditions in other parts of the solar system.

We are thankful for such a gorgeous day today for our field trip, as we were able to spend lunch and the rest of the afternoon at beautiful Kits beach.

1.) MATH: Re-quiz tomorrow morning at 8 am or after school for the rectangle/triangle/parallelogram quiz. Please complete corrections on your original quiz and ask for help with anything you do not fully understand.

2.) SOCIALS: Work on your Iqbal project.

3.) FRENCH: Visit tinyurl.com/div4french for help with French pronunciation. Select "French" for language, and select "Felix (Canadian)" or "Julie (Canadian)" for the voice. Type in your text and it will help your pronounce it! Fairly accurate most of the time.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

a) What was your favorite part of our visit to the HR MacMillan Space Centre? Why?
b) From your worksheet, summarize (3-5 sentences) what you have learned about Canadian contributions to space exploration and experiments in space.
c) Write down 3 other cool facts that you learned from our visit today (NOT covered on the worksheet)

Tuesday: Terrific Triple Jump

The gorgeous weather today was perfect for our track activities outside. We began the day with some triple jump drills and practice. After the math quiz, we completed 2 rotations of track attack: shot-put and sprints.

We continued working on our book club readings and Iqbal project in the afternoon, completing the day with some video recordings of student conversations in French.

1.) LA: Read and take notes on Section I of your book. Be ready to start blogging on Thursday!

2.) FRENCH: Practice having conversation in French with your partner.

3.) SOCIALS: Continue working on the Iqbal project.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Write 3 questions that you would like to learn how to ask and answer in French. These questions should be ones appropriate for asking when we practice French conversation at the beginning of French class.

Making recycling fun

We began the day by launching our book club: students received one of 5 different books and made predictions about their book. We will be diving deeper into these books in the upcoming weeks.

In socials, students brainstormed criteria for the Iqbal project, and had a blast creating labels for the different levels of achievement (eg. exceeding expectations = legendary)

In photography, students worked on a special project- it will be a surprise to student families, to be unveiled this weekend!

1.) MATH: Finish the review worksheet about the area and circumference of circles.
Math quiz tomorrow. You will need to know:

How to estimate the area of circles
The formula for calculating the area and circumference of circles
How to find the circumference, area, diameter, and radius of circles

Ms. Fei will host a review session between 8:10 am and 8:40 am for those who would like extra help.

2.) LA: Finish activity 1 (Predictions) and activity 2 (Is it a true story?) outlined in the book club notes.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Post the paragraphs you wrote for book club.

Thursday: Text to World Connections

Today, students learned how to dig deeper into making connections to the world around them. They started their personalized Iqbal projects by brainstorming ideas on one of the major themes.

In math, students rearranged parts of a circle into a parallelogram, and together derived the formula for calculating the area of a circle! This is what inquiry learning is all about!

Next week, we will have a structure building contest using our new Keva Planks! Check out their website!

1.) FIELD TRIP: Amanda, Eddy, Jayden and Jason- please bring your field trip forms and money! Talk to Ms. Fei or Mr. Hong if there are any financial concerns.

2.) SCIENCE: If you still have not completed the extreme environment group project survey, please do so. Ms. Fei will be finalizing the individual marks this weekend.

3.) MATH 6/7: Complete 'CIRCLES' handout (5.6). Be sure to show all your work. (IE Show the formula you used and write down the numbers to show what you have calculated.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Today you all generated ideas based on the themes you chose for your Iqbal projects. In a paragraph, explain how you plan on presenting your theme and how it will make others think about how it connects to the world around them. Think back to the 'BANKSY' example we discussed in class

Wednesday: Miss World Canada

The students had a wonderful opportunity today to learn with Miss World Canada 2012 (@MissTaraTeng). She gave a talk on 'Modern Day Slavery' and it really opened up our eyes to what it is, what it looks like, and what we can do to help prevent it. They learned more about being agents of change and being able to make a difference!

1.) FIELD TRIP: Amanda, Eddie, Jayden, Jason, Matt, Mariko, Ryna, and Wyomie, please bring your field trip form and money. Please speak to Mr. Hong or Ms. Fei if there are any financial concerns.

2.) SCIENCE: Complete this survey on Google form to let Ms. Fei know about each group member's contribution to your extreme environment project.

3.) MATH: Finish worksheet 5.5 Estimating the Area of a Circle.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Write about at least 1 connection you made from Miss Tara Teng's Presentation today.
Explain how what you learned today connects with what you have been learning about: child labour, human rights, and the major themes in Iqbal.
Today's 'WRITE A RESPONSE' will take some thinking but it will help you tomorrow when you start on your projects!
