Today, students learned how to calculate a percentage of another number. They started by doing groupwork and trying to calculate tax/tip with their group members. A variety of strategies were used to find the answers. This same formula can be applied to interest, discounts, etc. This will be a calculation that you use over and over in your lifetime. So, to answer your question, math is useful in every part of your life.

Learning how to calculate percentages is something that many people do not consider useful. The process of finding the percent of a number, then finally adding it sounds tedious. This is why many different strategies have been created to ease the amount of effort needed to simply calculate how much you need to pay for those exotic butters. If one technique may seem hard and time consuming to you, you can try different ways to find the most efficient way for you. We as a class have been taught a very useful way of calculating percent, which is to simply turn the percents into decimals and multiply the base number. Calculating percent is most useful for taxes or financial issues, as those involve percent. Most examples involve financial topics, because that is mostly where calculating percentage is important.

One small example is interest rate. Interest rate is somewhat confusing so I will do my best to explain. Interest rate is where one must pay an extra 19.99% to the total of what you buy when using a form of loan (eg. Credit card). If you pay when the monthly bill arrives, then you must pay interest. However, if you pay the amount needed when you purchase the items, then you will not be charged any interest. Paying with cash will not require interest but simply tax, as it is not a form of loan. It is not the same as tax as tax is payed as you purchase the items, but interest is payed only if 30 days pass and you have not payed the bill. Using the technique shown to us is very useful, as it can be done on a calculator to make sure you have the right amount of money, since you are paying online. This strategy helps a lot when paying for exact items as is also shows the exact decimals.

Another example can be commissions. Commissions work differently from hourly wage as you are always being payed 5 percent from the company itself. This seems like something where you do not need to calculate anything, but companies do make mistakes, and there have been cases where the company does not pay the amount needed. Calculating the exact amount needed is useful for this reason,as it is possible to contact the company for proper payment. Using the technique given to us, it leaves room for less calculating for a more accurate answer.

Schools will not directly teach you things that you need as an adult, but they do teach you things that involve these actions, which helps greatly. This is why having proper strategies is important because of how often you will be needing to calculate things which can be a chore if done in a non-efficient way. I feel that we should learn how do pay taxes and interest rate, but I guess knowing the math part is ok.

Two times when you would have to use the formula we learned in class today is when your say are at restrant and you need to know if you have anouth cash. The second is when your at the store and you need to know if you have anouth cash to by some thing. I think this it a very useful math concept.

Example 1:
Cost of phone: 800 dollars
Tax: 12% which equals to 84 dollars
So then your equations would be 800 + 84 = 884
That would be your total

Example 2
You and your family go to the keg for dinner and dinner costs before tax and tip equals 200. How do u find out what the tax and the tip will cost? Keep in mind that tax is 12% of the cost of dinner and tip will be 25 present.

Calculation
25 percent is basically 25 dollars per 100 dollar ( AKA 100%) so then for 20 dollars we will have to times 25 by two which will equal to 50 dollars

Then the tax again same thing 12% times 2 equals 24.

The equation would be 200 + 50 + 24 =

Answer: 274 dollars

Two ways you can use the strategy is if you use money. You can also use this as measurement. I think this strategy is useful.

Two ways you can use the percentage strategy are in using money, or in measurements. I will give you two examples.

First of all, it's your birthday! You and your family are going to by you a really expensive Nerf Gun pack that costs $900 because they are so nice. Once they buy it, you want to soar and give your parents back money. You give them 45% of the cost of the pack. you have $524. Once you give them the money, how much will you have left? So you start by finding 45% of 900. don't mix it up. It's not 900/45. You can do this in two ways. first, you know that 100/20*9=45, then you can say 900/20*9=405. The other way is to multiply 45 by 9 because 900 is 9 times 100. 9*45 = 405. Finally you will end up with 524-405= 119. So the answer is " You will have $119 left after giving money to your parents."

This second question is that you have a rope. It is 800cm long. You have three friends, Bob, Joe, and Jeff. Bob gives you a rope that is 15% of your rope. Joe gives you 10% off your rope. Jeff gives you 20% of you and Bob and Joe combined. How are all your ropes combined? You do this by finding the rope for Bob, and Joe first which is 80cm and 120cm. Then you add you and them, which is 1000. Then you find Jeff, which is 200. Lastly you add them all up to 1200. That's your answer.

I think this strategy is very useful and can help many students for doing their work. Overall, that strategy can be used in many ways.

Imagine you are at the Apple store and you have an extreme desire to own the newest iPhone XR. You've been saving your pocket allowance for years, and finally, you've earned enough. As you await your turn in the checkout line, your brain is going overdrive mode. You are desperately calculating how much money you have to hand over to the cashier. "It's only $749!" You think. "I have 800 dollars, that's enough for tax!" You walk up to the cashier, and he/she says. "That'll be $838.88, please." "What?" You exclaim!

This is an excellent example of where knowledge of percentages and tax is extremely useful. Percentages, tax, and related mathematical terms can be applied to many everyday activities, such as buying V-Bucks in Fortnite or buying a laptop/PC to play Fornite on.

In the above example, knowing how much an item costs after applying the sales tax would be much more useful than knowing the price prior to sales tax, as you will obviously need to pay more! In Canada, the tax on all goods that can be consumed legally without harm (a.k.a food/drinks) is 5% of the total price, whereas the tax on all other merchandise is 12%. This is why when you buy iPhone XRs, you should always pay 112% of the actual price so you don't end up owing $89.88, like our fictional character Bobby. Or, you could also pay with a credit card, which saves a lot less hassle. And is easier.

Another example of where such knowledge will be useful is during math class. When the teacher teaches you this, everyone knows that there will unmistakably be a few practice questions on this subject, and if you were listening, you would know the secret to 'how to not lose your money in life.'

Although the above paragraph doesn't really count as a legitimate use for percentages, tax, and tip, it is very useful when paying tips. For, example, if you are at this trashy, dilapidated 'restaurant' where the food is just plain revolting, and the waiter (who is very snobby), asks you how much the tip percentage will be. You press the 'other' option and enter the amount of 1%. So, you pay 101% of the price. Now after you learned your lesson from not looking at restaurant reviews on Google, you decide to go to the extremely ostentatious and pretentious first-class restaurant, called Beijing Roast Duck (which is actually a restaurant on Broadway). After eating the scrumptious, delectable roast duck, the waiter asks you how much tip will you pay, and this time, you select 15%, the ideal tip amount. Your total would be 115% percent of the total. If you dined at the Beijing Roast Duck restaurant, the price would be $101.2.

To recapitulate, two areas of usefulness for the knowledge of percentages, tax, tip, and other related algebra terms, are before paying for commercial goods and paying tips at restaurants.

Today, we've been taught different ways to calculate percentages of a number. This is really useful and important, because now we know how to count tax and tips to see how much something would cost. (yay)

An example of that would be if you were to buy something. Take a laptop, for example. Suppose that laptop costs $700. That doesn't mean you only have to pay $700, as you would also need to pay tax and tips. How would you know how much you'd have to pay in total? Well, today we learned to turn the percentage into a decimal and then multiply it by the number. In this case, let's say tax is 5%, then that'd be 0.05. You'd multiply that by $700 because that's how much the laptop costs. You'd also need to count the tip, so let's say tip is 7%, then it'd be 0.07 x 700. Then you'd add $700 to the number you get for tax and tips, which should end up as $748. Now you know how much money you'd need to bring to buy a computer that costs $700 with 5% tax and 7% tip. Yay!

It doesn't necessarily have to be about money, so if you ever go anywhere where you need a rope, then knowing how to calculate percentages is gonna be really helpful. If you have, like, 500 cm of rope and you need to share 15% of your rope, then just turn 15% into 0.15 and multiply that by 500, and your answer should be 75. Then you'd know you have to give 75 cm of rope to whoever it is that needs 15% of your rope.

Even though I am doing my VLN stuff, and I don’t know anything about what we learnt today, I could still make inferences from what are you guys doing in these few days. I thought we are learning percentages stuff of tax and discounts?

I think Math can really visual in real life. There’s are tons of examples to discuss about tax or discounts. For the first example, when you are shopping, I believe you guys will always be bothered by the tax. Because you must know your price that you will pay has to be more than the original price. If the original price of a dress is $300, and then you have to pay 10% of tax, you may have to figure out the price of the tax first. At this moment, you can use this formula: 10% x 300, but 10% is not an actual number. So, you have to change 10% to 1/10 or 0.1. Then it will be 300 x 0.1= 30. Then when you figure out the tax, you add the original price and the tax. Then it will be, 30+300= 330. The last price that you have to pay is $330.

The next example is about discounts. I am sure we will always be excited when we have coupons or have discounts. If the original price of the shirt is $400, and the discount is 20% off. The formula will be 400-400 x 20%= $320. And now you can figure the price now!

Percentage of tax and discounts is very very useful in real life, to figure out the best buy, and to avoid someone deceives you with the wrong price. So, be concentrate when you are doing Math because Math is sooo fun!

Tips and taxes... where have you heard those words besides in math? Actually, once you think about it, a lot of places. Maybe in a restaurant after eating food, or buying groceries.

Have you noticed that when eating at a very fancy restaurant, you have to pay EXTRA money from the actual bill? This is called a tip and you give it depending on the mandatory minimum or how you think the place did. Another extra part is the tax, which is basically everywhere. You pay it to make sure that the government has enough money to do things like free doctor's appointments and such. Anyways, if you have to calculate the tip, and the tax, it will be easy to do because you would have already learned it in... surprise! Math!

A second example is you have enough money to buy something on your wish list, and go to the store to buy whatever it is that you want. However, when you walk up to the cashier with the item in hand, you realize that you forgot to count tax. Little mistakes like these can be disastrous. Now that you have learned to calculate tax, you will now be able to incorporate it into anything you will buy with money.

In conclusion, although some math skills don't seem all that important when you are learning it, it is actually crucial for real life situations.

Percent calculating is an extremely useful skill in both math and in real life, especially when finding tax, sales, and the price of something. Today, division two learned how to calculate percents. It was both an interesting and important skill to know.

Basically, the trick here is to convert the percentage into a decimal. This part can be a little tricky if you don’t know what to do. Remember that a percent is always out of 100 which means it is a fraction too. One whole is always 1.00, so 1/100 is 0.01. Therefore, just take your percentaged number and divide it by 100. Then when you have your decimal, take the number you want to find the percentage of and multiply it by that decimal.

For example, let’s say that you needed to find the cost of shirt that costs $42 with a 20% off sale. Consequently, you need to pay 80% of $42. 80% is equivalent to 80/100 which is also 0.8. $42 multiplied by 0.8 is $33.6. Note that this also works for numbers above 100%. In that case, the decimal will be greater than one whole.

In conclusion, this is how you can calculate percents. I think it is a necessary and required skill for your future, so it’s good to be learning it. Now, kids really can’t say that math is useless and will not be used in real life!

Today, we had a lesson on how to calculate percentage from numbers. I think it was a great skill to master that will actually help you in general! Here are some examples of where we could use the strategies we learned in class to help us calculate percentage from numbers and solve problems in different situations.

Let's say, you’re going out to have a family dinner with your family tonight. The meal you choose costs a total amount of $65.00 not including 10% of taxes and 15% of tips. So this time, we could use the strategies we learned in class to help us find the total amount we need to pay. First, 10 + 15 equals 25%. Next, I’m going to write this percentage into a decimal number “0.25” and divide this number with the meal price which is $65.00 to find the amount of taxes and tips needed. Afterward, we take our answer of $16.25 (taxes & tips) and simply add to the $65.00 (the meal prize) and there we go, we’re done solving the problem.

A store is on a big discount, everything insides are all 60% off. You would like to buy a few of the clothing that cost $550.00 for the original prize which means none of the discounts has been made yet. Can you think of some ways to calculate what the final prize could be? Here is one way that you should definitely give it a try. You’ll first want to write the 60% discount as a decimal (0.6). Then you can easily multiply this number with the original price ($550) to find out the final cost after the 60% discount, $330!

An example of when I will use the formula I learned in class today, was when I calculate what I got for the test. Unlike My home country Taiwan in here we don’t alway have test out of a hundred. So, it is hard for me to know what I got out of a hundred. And it was very useful because that way I get to know if I o good on the test before show it to other people.
Another example will be when you are buying stuff and have to pay Tax. It will be super useful, because if I don’t know how to use this formula I might get trick or something.

Example #1
Billy is going to buy an Amazon Alexa, and Amazon’s price for Alexa is $60 ( not-real-life ) and Billy also has to pay 7% GST ( government sales tax ) to Gov. Canada.
Equation
First, you need to add the original price and add the GST in this case 7% below, but before any of that happens, we need to convert 7% into a decimal which is 0.07. And then you may begin your equation.
Which is 60 multiply 0.07, 7x0=0, 7x6=56, so the answer is $5.60 tax
And now just add the original price with tax. Ohh by the way Amazon shipping is free so, yeah.

Example
Jeff went to The Bay and bought a $30 T-shirt, and the tax was 7%.
But first, we will have to calculate what 7% is as a decimal, which is 0.07. 30 multiply 0.07, 7x0=0, 7x3=21. So the tax would in total be $2.10, and now just add that the original price and there you go!

I personally think this is very important to know because who knows which of us is going to start a business, to be real it is useful because then you estimate how much you need to pay and see how much extra you have ( if you do ) and yeah.

Using this percentage method can be beneficial during discount sales. It helps us find the discount of products during a sale.
An example where we can apply this method is in a sale for Supreme brand shirts. Each shirt costs about $30 with a 25% discount. To find out the discount, we can multiply $30 with the decimal 0.25 to get $7.5 which is the discount price. For us to know the final sales price of the Supreme shirts, we can subtract $7.5 from the original price which was $30. That gives us $22.5 which means cheaper shirts.
Another example is at a restaurant wherein the Pina Colada costs $12 with a 50% discount due to the special Lunar New Year event. Since it costs $12, we can multiply it with the 50% which is 0.5 in decimal form to get $6. Now that I know the discount price, I can get the Pina Colada's sale price by subtracting the original price, $12 with the discount price, $6 to get $6. This means that the sales price of the Pina Colada is $6.
In conclusion, this method of getting the price of products that have discounts is useful when it comes to sales. It helps us find the sales price, discount price, and tax as well.

How much will lunch cost? How am I supposed to know? I never learned this!

Well, now I’ve lost my excuse so... There are multiple scenarios where you would need to know how to calculate the percentage of stuff and all that but what are they? You will need to know this when you purchase anything at a store/restaurant. Like at McDonalds or Costco. Yes, most of these stores have machines that calculate the prices and all but what if they don’t? You pay extra because you are uneducated? Or pay less and have to waste time debating and stuff? No!

I think this concept is very useful for an everyday life. I could use this anytime I buy something. I’ll just type all of it into a calculator or something and BAM! I got myself whatever % or price or something I need!

In conclusion I believe that this method is very helpful if you are to purchase an item from a facility.

1 way to do it is to for example if it’s 400 and 50 then it will be 4.00 + 0.50 = 4.50 but tif it has 4.5 then it will be 0.045 because it has a dot in between the 2 numbers

If your family or friends go to like a restaurant and they have a 20% then it will equals to 20 dollars and another 20% = 20 dollars then they had to play 100 dollars for the food and then everything will be 100 + 20 + 20 = 140

Example One
For example if your buying dinner for you and your family and it comes to $120 dollars, and tax is 10% you have to figure out how much it will be. 10% can be changed into 0.10. When your multiplying it easier if you do it this way. 120.00 x 0.10. When you get the answer, you get the tax. Once you get the tax, you add it to the money you spend on food, $120. Once you add them together, you get the price of the food including tax

Example Two:
This is now including tips. Imagine your at a different place now and food is 70 dollars. When you add 12% tax and a 20% tip on top of that, it’s going to take you longer. If your trying to figure out both of them not together, it’s going take more time, but you can see it a lot clearer. 12% tax = 0.12, and 20% tip = 0.20. Then you multiply 70.00 x 0.12. When done that, do the tip 70.00 x 0.20. Once you get both of the answers. You want to add all three of them together. Once your done adding, that’s it! You’ve found out the price of the food with adding tax and tip!

It’s good to learn this, so you have an idea of how much your food will be in the near future. Tax is very good to have, but it is upsetting sometimes, when the tax % goes up.

I definitely think that this is a very useful skill to have. There are many situations in life where you may need to use these skills. For example, maybe when you’re out at a restaurant and you wanna figure out how much money in total could be needed. Another example could be when you’re out shopping. Maybe you bought a lot of items and you wanna figure out if you have enough money for the tax included as well. It will also become helpful if you’re doing a math question in school!

I think that this is a useful skill to have. There are many situations in life where you need to use skills in daily life.

One example is you are going to eat at a restaurant and you want to figured out the amount of money you need to pay. Another example is you are out shopping. You bought lots of items and you want to figure out if you have enough money for the tax included too.

It is good to learn this because you have a idea how many food, clothes, and etc you need pay plus tax. Sometimes tax is good to have but tax goes up.

(i did my par last night but didn't post it)
I've always been pretty frugal. I always try to find the best deals, discounts and etc.. This math strategy can help me in many different situations.
For example, this strategy can help me with comparing prices.
Let's say I like these pair of shoes, one shops has them for $83 with a 20% discount, the other shops have them for $73 with a 15% discount. Knowing this strategy I can easily calculate the price and compare them.
Another scenario would be knowing how much the price of something has increased.
Let's say, last year, tickets to this festival was $90. Each year the ticket price increases by 2%. If I wanted to buy tickets for 2020, I would know how to calculate this question since I learned this method.
In my opinion, this method is very helpful...if you have a calculator. When I do one of these questions I have to write it out, I can't do it mentally. In conclusion, I learned a very helpful method on how to calculate percentages today.

The calculations were kind of confusing. The discount is 15%=01.5 or 0.15. tax is 8%= 0.8. commission is 35%= 03.5 or 0.35.
