Story telling is an important part of all cultures.Today, many of you shared stories from your upbringings. It was interesting to learn that all cultures have similar stories with similar messages. We learned that the stories that are passed down from generation to generation all have a 'BIG IDEA'. You learned about Indigenous stories from Canada (The Raven and the First Men), the indigenous story from Australia (Rainbow Serpent), the Christian story, and the Islamic Creation story. Today's post a response will be related to what you learned in class today.

My story is about a boy (si ma guang) who was playing with a group of kids outside. One day, a boy fell into a pot of water that was a display in the garden. Everyone started to freak out, but Si Ma Guang stepped up and used a rock to break the pot open, and saved the boy's life. I think the meaning behind this story is that when someone's life's at risk, or when there's a real emergency, you need to do what you need to do. If the children waited for an adult, that boy would've surely died.

I'm pretty sure it's because that pot was pretty important in that area where si ma guang lived. Everyone was more scared to get into trouble.

So one day there was a princess. She was about to get married and she was trying to find a Good husband. So the king decided to tell the town that whoever gives the longest love letter to his daughter gets to marry her.
After a few days the kingdom had gotten piles and piles of letters that can fill the whole entire storage room.
The longest one the had was 9999 pages and the shortest one was three words. It was so surprising of what the person can write with three words. Any guesses of what he said?

Well he said "I love you" Just those simple words can make the princess fall in love with him. So then they got married and lived happily ever after.

The big idea of this story is that quality is important not quantity. Like what Mr.Hong always says. LOL!!!!!!

@ Sofia - Well the king wanted his daughter to get married with a guy that could write the longest love letter but then those three words meant a lot to her so she just married the guy that wrote,"I love you".

It's not really a story from that got passed down from my family but this is a traditional Japanese tale.

Once upon a time, there was old man. He had a large lump on his face. He was very proud of it and he was very kind to everyone. There was also another man, who also had a lump on his face. He really disliked everyone and always wished it was gone. One day the nice old man accidentally walked into ogres' banquet. He begged them to spare his life and they told him they would, if he danced well for them. He danced as best as he could and gave all he could. The ogres were very happy and told him to come again. Until he comes, the ogres took his bump on his face. The evil old man was very jealous. He told the nice old man that he would go for him the next day and he did. The Ogres made him dance and he failed miserably. They were very unhappy and gave the other mans lump to him.

I think that the big idea is that what you get in life will be the amount of work you put in. The nice man worked hard and got what he deserved, while the evil man didn't try hard enough and was mean to everyone which made the ogres give the other lump to his which is what he deserved.

So today I am going to tell the story of 女娲补天(nuwa fixed the sky)
After 女娲 made the first humans everyone was living happily. Until the sky broke and meteors started shooting down from the sky. Humans were all dying and 女娲 thinks that she should save them. She gathered seven colourful stones and sticked it into the hole. Everyone was saved and they lived happily every after.
The moral of the story is to not destroy Earth or else meteors will be shooting from the sky. :)

A Dish of Ice Cream

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

“How much is an ice cream sundae?”

“50 cents,” replied the waitress

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it.

I think the big idea of the story is to joke around with other people because sometimes it could make people laugh and you can make a really good friend just by doing that.

Once upon a time, there were a mother and her little girl. While they were walking on the street, another women just grabbed her daughter and ran away. The mother chased down the women and found a policeman on the street. The mother told the officer the story but the women claimed that the girl was her daughter. The policeman said, "as I don't know who is telling the truth, let me cut the girl in half and you two can share." The real mother was scared and asked the policeman not to do that. The clever policeman knew right away that she was the real mother and returned the girl to her.

This story shows that mother always loves her kids.

When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were 15 cents – her tip.

I think the big idea of the story is to treat others the way you want to be treated because sometimes you just have to joke around with people and if its a funny one then they might do a funny joke to someone else aswell.

My story is about a baby and two women who claimed to be its mother. So one day there was a baby in a basket and nobody knew where it had come from. After looking far and wide two women had come to the town and claimed that the baby was theirs. They kept arguing and arguing about who the baby belonged to and both women wouldn't give in. At last they agreed to take the baby to the wisest man in the village and let him decided who the real mother was. When they took the child to the man he said that because they both wanted the child, why don't they split the baby in half and they could each take half. Immediately one women declared that she would give up the baby and that she would let the other woman have him. The wise man knew right there and then that the woman who said she would give up the baby was the true mother.

I think that the big idea of the tale is that if you truly love someone you would do anything to protect them. Even if that means letting them go.

What if both the mothers lost their child and they both thought that child was their child. Then you won't be able to tell because the two moms will both be willing to do anything for their child.

@ Hana - I've heard this story before. When I heard it, it was a bit different. One of the women's child had died so she thought that fighting with another women was the right thing. The rest of the story is the same.

Then I guess that they both would have given up the child. But that just shows my point. If this was true, both mothers' love for the child would have prevented them from killing it. Even if there was a chance of the baby being theirs, the thought of killing their own child would stop them from doing this because of the love they have for it.

Grazing Buffaloes
One day, Guru Nanak Dev Ji (first god) was sent to graze the buffaloes in the pastures. He laid down under a shaded tree and fell asleep. The hot sun began to fall on his face and a big cobra went to him and provided him shade. He had totally forgotten about the buffaloes. They had wondered off to a neighbours farm and had eaten all the crops that were grown. The owner was informed right away. When the owner got there everything was perfectly fine. The crops were greener than before.

My Grandpa told me this story and it was something like, There was this poor couple who lived in a village. They had a hen that would lay an egg everyday. But one day the hen started to lay golden eggs instead. So greed took over the man and he cut open the hen to get all the eggs. To his surprise there was nothing there just organs of a dead hen. Now his family is even more miserable because of greed.

I think the big idea is that be grateful for what you have and don't be greedy.

My Grandma told me this story. So there was this dog that had a nice, big, shiny bone. It went to a lake and looked into the water. In the water, it saw a dog with a big, shiny bone in its mouth. It wanted that bone so it opened it's mouth to bark at the dog. It turns out, the dog was it's reflection in the lake and when it opened his mouth to bark it just lost the bone because it fell out. I think that the big idea of this story is not to be jealous. It also teaches karma. Always appreciate what you have.

My story is about a clever bat and a few foxes. One day, a bat was flying around. A fox caught the bat and said “Mmm. I love eating mice.”
The bat was very clever and said “I’m not a mouse. I’m a bird, so will you please let me go?”
The fox let go of it and said “I don’t like eating birds, so I suppose I’ll let you go.” The bat then flew away. The next day, the bat was flying around and another fox caught it. The fox said “Mmm. I love eating birds.”
The bat said “I’m not a bird, I’m a mouse. Will you please let me go?”
The fox said “I don’t like eating mice, so I’ll be kind and let go of you.” Then the fox let the bat go. The next day, the bat was flying around. Yet another fox caught the bat. The fox said “Mmm. I love eating mice.”
The bat already knew exactly what to say. “I’m not a mouse, I’m a bird. Will you please let me go?”
The fox thought it over and said “I like eating birds too, so whether you’re a bird or a mouse, I’m not going to let go.” The bat was never seen again.

The big idea of this story is that the same trick won’t work every time. Let’s say that you were playing a game and you used a trick to win the game. Someone will figure your trick out and they will know how to counter or prevent you from using it again. Then, you have to think of a new trick because the other one won’t work anymore. From this, we can deduce that we have to be creative and innovative to be successful in the future. For example, instead of using the same trick, the bat should have said something along the lines of this: “Exactly! I’m a mouse! I thank you so much for putting me out of my misery! I have this incurable sickness that really makes me taste horribly sour and it makes me feel terrible. I’ve been trying to find someone who would be willing to eat me for a while now, but no one is willing at all.” The fox probably wouldn’t want to eat the bat now and would let it live.

In my religion god made the universe and animals and plants. Then god made 1 man out of dust then later god thought that the man who was named Adam needs to have another person that was not totally the and that woman was made out of one of the mans ribs and god got the rib when Adam the sleeping. Then when the man woke up he saw the woman and her name was Eve. So that is how it started from those 2 to all of us.

I read this. No one told me this. Since no one wants to answer my question, too bad.
This guy in China had some beer or wine, I forgot which. And he was gonna give it to one of the 3 people. Whoever drew the best snake in like 3 minutes or something gets the beer/wine. One person was already done drawing the snake way faster than the other 2 and decided to draw legs on the snake while waiting and he lost because of the legs.

This was a story that my grandma used to tell me when she lived with us. I believe it's called The 'Fisherman and the Golden Fish', or something like that.

There once was a poor fisherman who lived with his wife. One day, the fisherman went fishing. He cast his net in the ocean and caught a goldfish. The goldfish had the ability to talk and pleaded the fisherman for his freedom and in return he'll grant him a wish. But the fisherman didn't want anything so he let him go. When the fisherman went back home and told his wife all about the goldfish, she was furious with him and commanded him to go back and ask for a small thing. The fish happily did his request and told the fisherman to go back home because he did it. The wife took the fish’s abilities for granted and asked for more. For each thing she asked for, she became greedier and greedier. Until eventually the wife asked to be the ruler of the world (or something like that), but the fish wasn’t happy with her request. The fish brought the fisherman and his wife back in poverty as a lesson for her.

The think the big idea is not be too greedy or you’ll face great punishments like the woman.

So this story is about one that every night I recite it with my grandparents. Let me just translate it first.

So you're laying in bed staring at the light of the moon.
When you look at the light of the moon you think it is the frost from the ground.
When you lift up, you look at the brightness and when you look at the ground you think of the homeland.
Sorry I'm not that good at translating most of you should understand.

Overall I think that the big idea is that you should be looking at things more closely instead of just guessing what it is. So pay attention as well to important things.

Today, a lot of us shared the stories from our upbringings, which I also had a story that my teacher and my parents always told me and it also states the big idea. This story is about a rabbit and a turtle having a race (Guī tù sàipǎo). So one day,when these two animals were having the race, the rabbit know that the turtle walk like so slow, which he thought that he didn't have to run so fast cause he gonna win. He decided to sleep under the tree for a while so that the turtle can be the same speed as him. A while later, the turtle saw the rabbit was sleeping and the turtle just kept going because it was a race, the turtle just want to win. At last,the turtle won just because the rabbit was kept sleeping and didn't wake up. Since the rabbit heard others were clapping,he woke up and ran to the end, so of course he felt sad because he didn't win the race. I think this story tell us that we shouldn't always stop halfway because you just worked really hard in the beginning but then you just want to give up, which I think is right, if the rabbit didn't sleep at first so he wouldn't lose but he choose to be lazy so at the last he lose.

The little horse crosses the river
A little horse wanted to cross the river. She saw an old cow drinking water,and she asked the cow: “Hello Mr.Cow,I want to cross the river,is it deep?” The cow replied “The water is shallow,you can totally cross the river.” The little horse,listening to the cow,planed to cross the river. Suddenly,a very small squirrel jumped down from a tree,and screamed: “Little horse don’t cross the river,it is very deep! You will drown and die!!!” Listening to the squirrel,the horse didn’t know what to do,so she went home to ask her mother. Her mother said,” My daughter,the cow is big and fat,so he will think that the water is very shallow,the squirrel is so small and skinny,she will definitely think the water is deep. The best way to find the truth is to do it yourself.” Listening to her mother,the little horse returned to the river,and carefully crossed the river.It was not as shallow as the cow said,but it was not as deep as the squirrel said. I think the big idea is that everyone is different,so what is right for one person,might not be right for you. Everyone’s abilities are different.

When I was young my parents didn’t really tell me stories other than the standard ones that practically everyone knows. However they did tell me a couple of their own stories of their own experiences. One of which was about a lesson of how get food politely. Basically my Dad told me about how even though it makes it look weird you have to take the food from the side of the plate that you’re on. He told me about when he went to family dinners the kids would extend their hand to the wrong side of the dish and before they knew it his grandma would hit the hand with the back of her chopsticks. What I learned from that was how to take food politely. After that I went around slapping my family’s hands with the chopsticks just for fun :) (I was such a good kid). I also heard a story from my Grandma, and how she jumped out of a window during class. She was in Grade 10 at the time, and she and her friends were so bored that they dared her to jump out the window. So she did, and ran back without the teacher even noticing that she left. Her friends dared her to jump out again and again, and by the end of the class she had jumped 7 times in total. Ironically she did this during sewing class, and 5 years later she became a HomeEc teacher. I wonder if any of her students ever jumped out of the window during her lessons...
(I'm not entirely sure what the big idea of this one is)

I realize my stories don't really have big ideas, but I guess they aren't really stories either? I don't really know... This was all I could remember.

There were a farmer who just spread some seeds in his lands. But after a few days of good care, the seeds stayed still and didn't even grow a bit. The farmer was really impatient and worried, he said, " I have to help the plants." One day, he finally thought of a idea, so he rushed to the lands and pulled the seedlings using all his force. from morning to the evening, he worked hard all day and finally pulled every plant up. Being proud of his work, he told his son about this "good idea". His son sprint to the land after hearing what his father did, and saw all the plants lying on the lands, showing no sign of live.
This story's telling us that you can't really push everything to get it done faster. Be patient and you'll receive what you deserve.

I can’t really think of a story that has a meaning or anything, but I do remember my mom telling me a story of something.

I’ve known the Philippines to have ghosts and so called monsters lurking around. And it’s all because of a story my mom once told me.

One night, a man was walking home from work or whatever. While he was walking, he saw a lady wearing all white. Her skin and clothing was white. Her hair black as night. She was walking towards him and then when they passed each other the man disappeared. Later on in the day, the man was found unconscious on the ground. And from that day on, that lady was known as the “White Lady”.

Horror stories. And I believe every single bit of it. Which is why I was scared to death when my mom told me we were going to the Philippines...

But I guess it did show a message I guess, always come home early and not when it’s dark... :P

Sun Wu Kong
Many children from China have watched the show Journey To The West or known about a monkey named Sun Wu Kong. This monkey wasn't an ordinary one of course, it's a fantasy story. He was born from a rock. He didn't have the best attitude, he was naughty, selfish, and wanted to "take over the world" from what I heard. He then met a Buddhist who took a very long time to tame Sun Wu Kong. But then the monkey becomes loyal and follows his new master on their Journey To The West.
I'm not sure, but I think this story or series is telling me that you can't always get what you want and teamwork is a big part of your life.

My parents didn’t really tell me stories, but here is one that I think most of you know and one that my grandparents told me as a kid. It’s called ももたろう, I believe the translation is ‘Peach boy’. Once upon a time there was a grandma and grandpa. The grandpa would go to the woods to collect woods and the grandma would go to the river to wash their clothes as usual. Then one day, the grandma found a small peach flowing down the river. She ate it and wanted to give some to the grandfather, so she brought it home. Before she went home, she saw a peach flowing down the river again but a huge one this time. She brought both of them home. When she got home she told him about how she found the peaches and so they wanted to crack open the huge peach. When they opened it they saw a baby inside. They named him ももたろう (‘Peach boy’) because he was born in a peach.

There is more this story but I have to go now.

In Korea, there is a story that has two brothers. They both made a farm with a lot of crops. They both split the crops in half. (BTW, their relationship is very good.) Since the younger brother had more family members than the other, the older brother decided to give the younger brother more crops. But the younger brother thought that since his brother is older, he should give him more crops. So at night they both secretly gave each other their crops. In the morning both of their 'crop count' was the same! So the next night the brothers once again gave the other crops, but this time the brothers met each other in the act! They both talked it out and they were closer then they have ever been before.
I think the big idea is that being a loving family is good. You should always try you best to get along with your siblings!
(But my family is a completely different story.)

Once upon a time, a general wanted to race horses with the emperor. Everyone thought it was a silly idea and laughed at him. But the general kept his calm and smiling face. The emperor told him that he’d give the general lots of money for his bravery; if he won, that is. The general had 3 horses. One of them was the most powerful, the second one was the eh one. The last and final one was the weakest. Since there were 3 rounds, the general used his weakest and smallest horse. While the emperor used his big and powerful one, thinking it’d beat the generals horse easily. And it did. The crowd burst into laughter as the generals horse trotted past the line after the big one had finished a long time ago. The next round, the general used his big horse while the emperor used his medium sized horse. The general won by a metre. And for the last round, the emperor had no choice but to choose his weakest and smallest horse, leaving him to defeat and the general to victory. The general was praised many times for his witty brain. And he lived a long and happy life.

I think this story is telling us to use strategies and not something that’s already laid out. I’m not really sure, but you guys can figure it out. I have to go now so bye!

In the jungles of India my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather would go from village from village so save the villagers from man-eating tigers. Edward would build a perch in a tree and live there for as long as it took for the tiger to come around. Tigers would only eat humans if they were too weak or old to hunt for their proper meals. Grandfather Edward was considered a hero in the villages.
