SELF-REGULATION AND MINDFULNESS

Today, Mrs. Chohan taught a Science lesson to Division 2 on Natural Selection. Her lesson was engaging and all the students learned a lot about Natural Selection and made connections to what they learned in Mr. Collins's lesson last week. One thing that both Division 1 and 2 have been working on is 'SELF-REGULATION'. Although the majority of the students are very mindful, there are several students who are still working towards improving in these areas. They are realizing how important it is to regulate their behaviours and emotions at school. Once we all become better self-regulators, the learning will thrive even more! #theLearningNeverStops #YOUwillBEunstoppable

IMPORTANT: Parents/Students , we need a few more volunteer drivers for ice skating. The dates are below. I have inputted the names of parents who said they could volunteer. Please either email me or post a message here to let me know if your parents can drive on Nov. 29th, Dec 13th, or both dates. I will place students in the cars, please do not do this yourself.
1.) MATH:

Complete Pg. 47-49 if you haven't already done so. Mark all answers at home.

2.) SKATING DATES:

Thursday, November 29th 10:30 - 11:30
Thursday, December 13th 10:30 - 11:30
We will depart the school at 10 am.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

In paragraph format, please complete the following:

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Include an engaging hook, 2-3 supporting sentences using examples and details, and a
  concluding sentence.
2.) In your paragraph, you should explain the importance of self-regulation. How do these skills help
  us? Feel free to get some ideas from the posted video.
3.) Include examples of when you are unable to self-regulate (in class or at home).
4.) Include examples of strategies you can use to help yourself self-regulate better and how you will
  do this in class.
5.) Pay attention to the givens (Spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, etc)
6.) Edit/revise your original post based on the feedback you received from the PAR POLICE.

“Can we go home now? I want to sleep!” It’s 10:03 am, why would you be allowed to go home. Logic fellow child, think about the logic. If you could self regulate maybe school would be a little bit easier to live through. Just a little bit, you know?

Let’s say you are really hungry, like you wish that you could bite off you fingers and eat them. Anything would do as long as it was edible. This could be at home or at school. The first scenario is that you start complaining and whining. Things like, “I’M HUNGRY! WHEN CAN I EAT!” Then you get in trouble and have to talk to your parents or your teacher and have to wait even longer to eat. Now that would suck. The second scenario is that you are also extremely hungry, maybe EVEN MORE hungry than in the first scenario. You simply wait it out until you are allowed to get your food. Maybe you can mentally sing the 100 bottles of “juice” song. Or you can honk about all the bad foods you have ever eaten and how you would do anything to eat them now that you are starving. #mushroomsarestillbad! HUZAH! Now you are properly fed and in the green zone.

In conclusion, you won’t get anything from whining and complaining. If you behave like a proper child would then you may get good things in life. I mean, you never know.

Everybody has to have good self-regulation skills in order to excel in life. But, not everybody knows what the actual importance of self-regulation is. They help us control our emotions and that helps us by letting us think about the consequences before actually doing it. For example, at school, someone may tell me to move out of the way and then push me aside at the same time. That would probably immediately put me in the red zone. Next, if I self-regulate, I can go on with my day. But if I don't, maybe bad things would happen (like suspension or expulsion).

Sometimes at school, I can't self-regulate because there are too many people to talk to around me. A way to self-regulate is just to move around and self-regulate my environment to make sure I won't get distracted during the lesson or activity. At home, my sister drives me crazy because of her temper. Every time she gets angry I get frustrated. But I usually just walk away out of the room before I get extremely mad. That way, I don't have to even see what is making me go into the red zone which helps me calm down.

Overall, I think that self-regulating is only tricky if you don't know what to do. But with the help of videos and Mr. Hong, everybody can do it.

@Miranda, your post was very good and I enjoyed reading it but there were some minor mistakes. For instance, " But," cannot be used to start a sentence, you can use however next time. Another correction you need to make is "angry", you need to add a comma after angry since there is a break there. Over all your paragraph was wonderful to read!

@RZ - Interesting that you thought the art lesson was useless? Hmmmmm, can you elaborate on this a little more? In my opinion, lessons on the elements/principles of art and design, in this case, 'VALUE', have a lot of 'VALUE' in art. I would love to hear more about this from you. Even then, do you always look and listen carefully when the teacher says that? “I’ll give you a few seconds to regulate your environment,” Mr. Hong always says. Despite the fact we always hear it, do we always do it? Self-regulation is a skill everyone needs to master in order to succeed in life, no matter if it’s in school, at home, or even in daily life. It may seem easy to learn self-regulation, but actually doing it can be difficult, especially when you’re not in the right zone. Therefore, I will discuss some strategies I use to self-regulate and why it is important to do so.

Self-regulation helps you control your emotions and behaviour. This can help you in many different ways, some of which include being more efficient and staying on task. Being self-regulated can really help you save some time. In most cases, it is really hard to figure out a plan to self-regulate when you are not in the mood to do so. In that case, I like to first identify what zone I am in. Then, I will be able to decide what I can do to calm myself, whether it can be to go to somewhere quiet, take a deep breath, or even just by reading. Additionally, I remind my often of what my task at hand is. I could be listening to a lesson and also reading at the same time, possibly resulting in me missing an instruction from the teacher. It is also important for people to know when they can get distracted. It can be a place, a person, or even an object. For example, a large crowd may be distracting, so it is better off to try to avoid it. This will help me avoid getting dysregulated.

In the end, this is why and how I self-regulate and stay on task. Everyone has their own strategies they use, and each strategy might work well or might not for certain people. Those were the strategies I like to use, and I hope others can use them to help them self-regulate too!

I think it’s important to be self- regulated because if your not self- regulated/ mad you might get in trouble or do something bad. The wyas you can tell when someone is not regulated is when a teacher is trying to talk to them but they are not listening and they don’t need to be just not listening they can also doing it on purpose. It’s not impossible to self-regulate you just need to be calm and relax and not distracted by something or fidgeting with something and they are trying really hard to tell you something. It doesn’t need to just be in school but everywhere. You can also might get in real trouble that you can get beaten by someone if you are not self-regulated.

"OK! Everyone, self-regulate, please." You've probably heard that at least five times a day, right? But after you heard that, would you self-regulate? If you are the one who's not always listen to this, you really should.

Why it is so important to self-regulate? because if you are not self-relate, you might have a really bad relationship with your friends and it could effect you whole life. If you don't self-regulate, it also can make you ugly. For example: you are playing outside but you forget you didn't finished your homework, so you are using your bedtime to do your homework, we all know that if you sleep enough, you will have more energy on your face. So that's why we all should self-regulate
Self-regulation can really help you control yourself, but it is really difficult to do it, especially if you are not in the mood to self-regulate(not in the green zone). So, I will tell you some strategies that I used to self-regulate. First, I will identify what zone I am in, then I can use my method( take a deep breath; find a secret place that nobody can find me and talk to myself or just sit down and start to read quietly) to try to calm myself down. Those method can really help me sometimes.

In conclusion, self-regulation is very important, we all should self-regulate ourselves.

“Time...! Everyone put down your utensils, and count up all your beans!”

That’s the sound of the teacher telling us to drop our untensils, after collecting beans! Even though she asks us to stop what we are doing, some of us do not do it! Some people get off task of what’s in front of them, or what others are doing. This is why Mr Fisher, and Mr Hong tell all of us to SELF-REGULATE on a daily basis! There are still some people in our class who do not self regulate, and become a problem, and there are some who do not from time to time. Everyone still has to learn how to control there actions in class or even at home! Mr Hong never gives up on us, and we will never give up on our selfs. It is very important to self regulate because it teaches us how to control our selfs when we get happy or mad. It’s a great way for us to learn from our mistakes as well!

Sometimes I don’t self regulate at home or at school, because I get happy about certain things from time to time. That’s not the only reason though. Since everything that happens to me is a “problem” to me in my head, it makes me freak out about every little thing. I won’t go into detail, but you understand what I’m getting at, right? Some ways I can try are, controling my actions more, making sure I always listen to the person talking instead of drifting off, and bug the person beside. I could also try practicing to sit still for a long period of time. This is also for anyone else who is reading this, and would like to try some of my ideas! I will try all the ways I mentioned, and see how I improve! Hopefully by the end of this term I can be very self regulated, and not get distracted by others.

@Breanna, your post was very good but sometimes I had to guess what you meant. For example, “drop our untensils”, I was very confused of what untensils were. Utensils are spelled as utensils not untensils, keep that in mind next time. Every time you write Mr add a period after “Mr.” Also “selfs” should be “ourselves”, remember to change “there” to “their”. “controlling” is spelled with double “L”, lastly self regulating has a dash in the middle (self-regulating). Time...! Everyone put down your utensils, and count up all your beans!”

That’s the sound of the teacher telling us to drop our utensils, after collecting beans! Even though she asks us to stop what we are doing, some of us do not do it! Some people get off task of what’s in front of them, or what others are doing. This is why Mr Fisher, and Mr Hong tell all of us to SELF-REGULATE on a daily basis! There are still some people in our class who do not self-regulate, and become a problem, and there are some who do not from time to time. Everyone still has to learn how to control their actions in class or even at home! Mr Hong never gives up on us, and we will never give up on ourselves. It is very important to self-regulate because it teaches us how to control ourselves when we get happy or mad. It’s a great way for us to learn from our mistakes as well!

Sometimes I don’t self-regulate at home or at school, because I get happy about certain things from time to time. That’s not the only reason though. Since everything that happens to me is a “problem” to me in my head, it makes me freak out about every little thing. I won’t go into detail, but you understand what I’m getting at, right? Some ways I can try are, controlling my actions more, making sure I always listen to the person talking instead of drifting off, and bug the person beside. I could also try practicing to sit still for a long period of time. This is also for anyone else who is reading this, and would like to try some of my ideas! I will try all the ways I mentioned, and see how I improve! Hopefully by the end of this term I can be very self-regulated, and not get distracted by others.

Ah, I can’t handle this anymore ahahahaha!!! Said Mr.Star in his mind

Everybody selfregulate or I will personally take all the Star Bucks away and never hand out anymore! Said Mr.Star in a mad tone!
Every student in the class started to laugh at the STAR BUCKS joke ( I also think it’s very funny) and within seconds the whole class was miss behaving, but some girls that go by the name Shannon, Emily, Ariel and Miranda stayed in their seats and waited patiently, and they were self regulated! And they clearly have learned about SELF-REGULATING! And Mr.Star was very happy to see this and the reward for being self-regulated is 500 Star bucks!!!!!
Woohooowooohooo the four of them said! And off the went, happier than ever they did this for the rest of the school year! And soon the others followed!

The tourists at the zoo cupped their hands over their ears to avoid turning deaf. That sound was from a misbehaving and not self regulating flamingo. Here at the zoo, animals never self regulated and a few tourists everyday went deaf because of the animals. You see, it is very important to self regulating or else you can effect others as well. Let us hope the zoo animals can also get a lesson on self regulating!

As I mentioned before, self regulation is a thing you need to have to do well in life. Self-regulation is very important as it allows you to have higher academic achievement and strong social skills. To be honest, I am not the best a self-regulating. There were some times at school where I was being distracted by my friends and talking to them when I wasn’t supposed to. However, I have found a solution. Have you ever heard the saying “think before you act?” That is exactly what at I will do.

Ahh screaming and yelling because your frustrated is that what you do then you need to self regulate and here are some tips. When you feel the needing to rage then what you do is breath three times and talk to someone who will understand your problem and really listen to you. For example when I get upset over somthing in basketball I'll tell one of my friends and solve the problem before getting back to the game. Hopefully these strategies helped.

Stop! Stop please, I am gonna tell, even though I am your friend...... I want to talk with you, but I can't. It is during the lesson now... Stop, please...... Suddenly a rubber band hit my face. " Stop it! " I accidentally stood up in the middle of the lesson. "Oops, Sorry..." I actually hit his feet hardly and guess what happen... I got in trouble.

At first I have to apologize of my huge hook. I know this hook may be some kind of off topic. (but actually not....) Self-regulate, this word actually always appear from Mr. Hong's mouth. Self-regulate, it is about you have to self-regulate your voice level and your actions. Self-regulate usually will be used in lessons, but... you should always self-regulate everywhere even if you are on the street.

By the way, after I got in trouble, my parents punished me, my friend hate me, I hate my friend, our friendship was broken, I always in the blue zone, a student (my friend) always in the blue zone. In this moment, I was thinking. Why am I so dumb, why did I break our friendship? Why, because of the rubber band? because of me? Him? Conflict between us? Right, conflict. Basically, I really hate conflict. Conflict, isn't the topic is self-regulate? Right, conflict is the most hard situation and thing of self- regulate. Conflict broke my relationship of my friends. Self regulate is a really useful strategy when you have an annoy little brother around your house or a good friend sitting beside you at school, if you don’t want teacher telling you to self-regulate in front of the whole class you will need it a lot. Though what excicarly is it mean to self- regulate, I know we use it all the time but what does it mean to do it? In my opinion I think it mean to control our-self so we don’t distract other from learning and we can also learn more. Example of I cannot self-regulate at school is that I sometime keep looking at what my friend is doing. Here are some strategies I use at home to help me self-regulate, write it all down, every time if my brother came annoying me alway write it down and always feel better. Because of that I don’t have so many thing in my mind, this is a good way to help me if I can remember to destroy the evidence after white it all down to. Anyway here's the strategies I use at school to help me self-regulate, before I try to look at my friend I always try to think of what will happen if Mr.Hong caught me and phone my parent about how I’m not self-regulate. Ah, I can’t handle this anymore ahahahaha!!! Said Mr.Star in his mind

Everybody self regulate or I will personally take all the Star Bucks away and never hand out anymore! Said Mr.Star in a mad tone!
Every student in the class started to laugh at the STAR BUCKS joke ( I also think it’s very funny) and within seconds the whole class was misbehaving, but some girls that go by the name Shannon, Emily, Ariel and Miranda stayed in their seats and waited patiently, and they were self regulated! And they clearly have learned about SELF-REGULATING! And Mr.Star was very happy to see this and the reward for being self-regulated is 500 Star bucks!!!!!
Woohooowooohooo the four of them said! And off the went, happier than ever they did this for the rest of the school year! And soon the others followed!

"Self-regulation". It's a very important thing to have.

Why is it important? Why is it a good thing to be self-regulated?

Now, obviously, I'm sure the teachers have explained this to us a lot of times, but it's always nice to have a friendly reminder. First of all, what is self regulation? Self-regulation to me, is calming yourself down at the right times, in the right place. For example,

imagine yourself in the classroom. You've just had a rough day and you're not in a good mood at all. You start getting mad at every little thing and screaming at people. That's not being self-regulated. Like, Mr. Hong would say, you would obviously be put in the red zone. The red-zone is when you're angry, too loud and possibly freaking out about something. It's definitely okay to be in a bad mood. We all loose control sometimes and when that happens, it's always nice to have some methods to help yourself calm down. Personally, I like to bring a stress ball or a stress item of any kind, just in case I get mad at points in time.

Another method for me is that I would put up a sign on my desk that says "Do not disturb, I'm in a bad mood." Now, that doesn't always work because, let's just say some other kids who can't self-regulate very well either may take advantage of that and try to annoy you on purpose, which is why I prefer using the method I'm going to explain later.

If you've known me for a while now you would know that I'm a person with really bad anxiety issues. Especially in large groups of people or when I'm being surrounded. Also, when the weather gets really hot, I would loose my sanity a bit. That's not even a joke, I literally have serious problems with the heat in summer. My brain will just go into a different level of the red-zone. When this happens, I really can't control it other than plugging in my ear-buds and pouring water on myself.

Anyways, back to the method I was talking about. I use this one a lot. Most people would just say take a deep breath but that makes things worse for me. The best way for me is to suck in a bunch of hair, open your mouth and blow it out as hard as you can at once until you choke on your own... breath? Something like that. Do it a few times until your satisfied. It actually works though because it gives you the feeling like your screaming it all out when in fact, it doesn't really bother anyone else other than making yourself look like a crazy weirdo.

So those are my methods to help myself self-regulate and in conclusion, its just generally very important to be able to self-regulate because when you're in a zone where you're completely out of your mind, you're going to end up doing something you'll regret and trust me, it's not pretty. :))

(Word of advice, never tell people to "calm down" when they're angry because that literally does nothing but make them more angry. I mean you don't really expect them to just calm down after you say, "calm down" right. It's pretty much the equivalent to saying "Stop having an anxiety attack."
