FRIDAY: Adaptations and Symbiotic Relationships

Today, we continued learning about adaptations and symbiotic relationships. Students learned about different types of feet, beaks, fur, skin, etc that contribute to the survival of certain animals. In addition to this, they learned about several different forms of symbiosis. To reinforce what they learned, the post a response for this weekend is a mini-research assignment. Read below to learn more.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.
MATH 7: Complete the remainder of the questions from pg 54-55 on adding fractions.
2.) SCIENCE:

Continue working on your research and picture for your 'Adaptations' mini-project.
Make sure you follow and use your criteria sheet as a checklist for everything you must include.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Learning intentions: I can use my research skills to define, in my own words, the different types of symbiotic relationships that exist in nature and list an example of each.
Using your awesome research skills and complete the following questions:
Define symbiosis in your own words and provide your RELIABLE SOURCE(S).
Define the three different types of symbiotic relationships in your own words (mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism) and provide your RELIABLE SOURCE(S).
Provide at least one example of each type of symbiotic relationship and explain which animal(s) benefits and if any animals do not benefit from each symbiotic relationship. Provide your RELIABLE SOURCE(S).
BONUS: Can you find 2 other types of symbiotic relationships? If so, give examples and explain both.

Mutualism - A Mutualism relation ship is when two animals or more can benefit and get something good out of each other. When they started "growing up" in the environment, they did it together and adapted so they can make use of each other. And example I found on the web was a spider crab and algae, the spider crab needs a hiding spot and the algae needs a place to live so the algae sits right on top of the crab to make it blend in it's environment and the algae then gets a good place to live.

Some host animals are smart enough they can adapt to other animals that help remove the animals and parasite living on the host and that animal that helps the host get rid of parasites gets something too, just like a mutualism relationship. One example is the tapeworm and a cow. The tapeworm stick themselves on the inside of the intestines of a cow. That tapeworm eats the undigested food, getting rid of the nutrients the cow needs.

Commensalism - Commensalism Relationships are a bit of both, only one is benefited but the other "host" does not get affected or harmed. For an example, a squirrel and a tree, the squirrel gets a nice home and some acorns while the tree doesn't REALLY get harmed.

A parasitic relationship is when one species benefits and the other one is in danger 2 A mutual is beneficial to each one the same 50 and 50 percent. 3 commensalism is a when the other creature is not in danger and not benefited either.

Symbiosis means two or more different species of organisms that have a certain relationship that can benefit each other. Although that is not necessarily mean that they will benefit each other. An example would be the one that was told to us in class where the rhino protects the bird and the bird sort of cleans the rhino from those ticks or whatever they are. Mutualism means that the organisms who have a relationship benefit each other like the rhino and bird. Parasitism means the organism (the parasite) benefits by taking things out of the host or using them as a nest. The host would be harmed like a human and the parasite would be benefited. An example of this would be a wasp or bee laying its eggs on a host like a wolf or something with fur, and the larvae feed on hatching. An example of commensalism is where a plant and an animal live together and do not even cause that much harm or doesn't even cause harm.

Symbiosis is the relation between 2 organisms, and they either both benefit from each other, or one does and the other doesn't. Mutualism is when both organisms "work together" and both benefit from the relationship. For example, the Oxpecker bird lands on a rhino or zebra, and takes out the ticks and other parasites that live in their skin. Then the zebra or rhino would help keep the bird safe from attacking predators. Also the spider crab and algae have a mutualism relation. The algae stays on the spider crabs back, which gives it a place to stay, while the crab gets camouflaged by the algae. Next, parasites can be in forms of ticks, fleas, lice, and leeches. Parasitism is when one organism is affected but the other is not. In other words, a tick could be on a zebra, and that would benefit the tick but not the zebra. Commensalism is when two plants or animals live in close relation but one benefits without hurting the other. One example of a commensalism relationship is a bird and a deer. The deer lets the bird eat the insects off its skin, which gives the bird food, and the deer doesn't have any sects on him. In addition to this, a squirrel and a tree is another example of commensalism. The tree remains unharmed while the squirrel gets protection and shelter from predators.

Symbiotic relationships are interactions between two species. That can benefit one or both species. Parasitism benefits one species while the other one is harmed. Mutualism is a symbiotic. Parasitic fish life for example to host fish and feed on spawning foods. Mutualism relationship in which both species benefit from the relationship. For Example, Birds eats ticks which benefits the cow. Commensalism benefits one organism but the other one is neither harmed or helped. For Example when remoras hitch a ride on sharks they take the leftover food to benefit himself.

For example a Rino and a bird. The bird keeps the Rino clean and The Rino keeps the bird safe. This type of symbiosis is called mutualism. That means that both animals can get something out of it, like the rino and the Bird. If the rino does not protect the bird the bird will not clean the rino and that symbiotic relationship would go all down hill.

Symbiosis is where two organisms interact or live with each other.
Mutualism is where neither of the organisms are harmed. Instead they both benefit from the situation.
commensalism is when one of the organisms lives inside the other or on the other.
Amensalism is when one of the organisms benefits but the other doesn't

Symbiotic relationships are when two species interact with each other. This can benefit one of the species, or it can benefit both of them.

Parasitism is a symbiotic relationship when only one species is benefitted. The other species is harmed. An example is a lice bug. It gets a warm and dry home, but people have to have bugs living on their head.

Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship when not only one, but both species get something good out of it. An example is when an oxpecker bird lands on a zebra and eats all of its ticks, which benefits the zebra, and the oxpecker gets a free ride.

Commensalism is a symbiotic relationship when one species is benefitted, but the other species isn't hurt, nor is it helped. An example is when a bird eats berries on a bush.

There are three different kinds of symbiotic relationships they are mutualism, parasitism, and commercialism. Mutualism is when both animals benefit from each other. An example of mutualism is a bee an a flower. As you know the bee flies around to get pollen so the bee can make honey but this also, helps the flower by pollinating so other flowers can bloom. Secondly, I am going to talk about parasitism. Parasitism is when only one animal benefits for each other. An example of parasitism is the flea and a common house cat. The flea lives on the cat to get blood to eat which it needs to live. While the cat is being harmed the cat is also helping the flea get food. Lastly I am going to talk about is commensalism is when one benefits a little bit while the other does not benefit or is harmed. An example of commensalism is the tiger and the golden jackal. Some golden jackals leave there packs and choose one tiger, then they stay a safe distance to keep. Then when the tiger leaves it kill the jackal will go and eat any left overs.

Definition- Symbiosis is an interaction between 2 different animals, that both have advantages. Mutualism is when both animals benefit from each other so they both are happy. An example of the relationship would be when both animals are not harmed but both get benefited from being in the relationship with each other. Parasitism this is pretty much the opposite of a symbiosis relationship this is when one of the animals is not harmed and benefited but the other one is harmed or injured.

Another Remoras attach to the shark and eat the leftover food remains on this would fall into the commensalism symbiotic relationship, because the remora is getting its food, and the shark gets no benefit.
