Friday: Bullying and Learning More about Citizenship/Digital Citizenship

We had a lesson on Friday morning about the importance of helping others and the element of privacy when doing anything online. As seen from the Amanda Todd incident, a lack of support and knowledge can have devastating effects on people and the people who love them. It was important on Friday morning for all of us to discuss the tragic events surrounding Amanda Todd and learning about the different avenues that students have if they need need help. Knowing how to find help can help people find the support they need. We learned that we can talk to friends, family, teachers, counsellors, Help Lines, Doctors, and other people if we ever need someone for support of any kind.

Thinking back to this incident, what would you have done differently for yourself or for the other person if you could go back in time and do something about it? Explain.

A)I have seen a kid getting bullied but I was in grade 3 and he was on the big field and far away so I could not help him

B) I did not do anything about it because i might of gotten in trouble for going on the big field

C)I would just go on to the big field and tell someone, Or I would help the kid.

At my old school I was bullied by a kid and he always was making me feel bad about my self. I kind of ignored it the first little while but then it got worse so I got help from my parents and teacher. If I were able to go back to that time I would try to make it seem like it did'nt bother me and maybe he would stop.

@ G Heffley - I think that was a good course of action on your part. Tell your parents and your teacher was an awesome way to deal with it. If it ever happens to you again, I think Talking to your parents or a teacher would be a great way to deal with it.

I have like the same thing as ATV BOY
-When i was in grade 2 or 3 there was this fight on the big field.
- i couldn't really do anything about it because when i first noticed it
the teacher was already running over to them.

Hello ATV BOY! Great feedback. Although, it sounds a bit mean, but I know you are not trying to sound mean! That is why we viewed The Power of Words video in class because not choosing the right words makes a big impact. Try to add a "Verbal doggie biscuit/compliment", or use a happy emoticon at the end next time.

I think I was around grade 6 I would say, and there was a bullying incident near the tether balls on the blacktop at my old school. I think the worst it got was pushing and being rude but I would have tried to help but I think they seemed grade 6 or 7 and I was afraid. I think I should have told an adult sooner so it wouldn't get any worse.

@ Percy - I agree. I think telling an adult sooner would have helped solve the problem sooner and perhaps there might not have been a physical altercation.

1.) In grade 4 or 5 there was a fight on the big field and Mr. Tito had to split them up and I don't know what the fight was about but I do know they both got suspended from school.

2.) When I saw it was happening it was already being taken care of by teachers so I had no time to react to the fight.

3.) I would tell them to let it off because words aren't worth fighting over unless it is really really really bad I also, would have asked why they were fighting.

In my old school there was was a fight between two grade 7, but the vice principal slit it up and they both got hit because in Kenya teachers are given permission by parents to allow them to hit kids if the do bad things.

I would have done something but I was so small and if I went close I would have also gotten in trouble.

If I was taller I would have tried t split it up and tell them that violence doesn't solve anything.

A) once there was a fight at my school and I was able to get a teacher to break it up before it got serious
B) what I did to help was I went and got a teacher to break up the fight but I didn't find out why the were fighting
C) what I could have done differently would have been to not tell a teacher right away but see what I could do on my own and maybe they wouldn't have gotten in as much trouble.

I have never actually been bullied, but once this girl told be that at her school, a boy got into a fist fight with a little kid. I didn't do anything about it, since it's at a different school. If I was at the school, I would have called the principal or simply said "break it up."

A.) When I was in grade 1 or 2 I used to get bullied by this one kid and it really bugged me so much I wanted him to stop so I...

B.)...I just ignored him and walked away.

C.) I would have told him to stop and probably told the teacher.

I have never seen any bullying but if I ever did I would for sure tell a nearby teacher or adult. But bullies need help too, because they probably have had someone in their lives that had been mean to them.

A.) I have actually experienced a form of bullying when I was in grade 3 or early grade 4. First, I was waiting on the swings and then these grade 7's boys came. At the time, there was a time limit when there were lines. Anyways, once the girl's time limit ended, I was grabbing a side of the swing and one of the boys did too! I was really mad and confused since it was my turn, and then they started using bad language because I guess they were determined to get that swing. After lots of name calling, (which made me feel really small by the way, and it was not a good feeling.) I finally just accepted it and moved on. I didn't want to be picked on even more, so walking away and ignoring them made me feel a whole lot better. It made me feel like I was the bigger person.

B.) Yes, I did do something about it. I ignored it and moved on.

C.) I would have explained to them why I was walking away because I don't think they got the ENTIRE message. If I explained it, I would have felt smarter too!

A.) In grade one I got bullied, I don't really remember much on what the person did. But I remember during recess and such I would hide somewhere from the bully. I felt scared, and alone.

B.) I first went and told my parents about it. Then they told my teacher. Which actually helped a lot. The person stopped bullying me and in grade 3 he moved schools. I have never seen him since.

C.) I would ignore the person and just not talk to him. And then tell him why are you doing this?

@Everyone

I noticed that everyone who shared an experience made references to fights and physical bullying (which is, for sure, a serious form of bullying).

But how about other forms of bullying which may not involve physical fighting, but could be equally serious and hurtful? Eg. Verbal bullying (making fun of someone, spreading rumors, embarrassing someone); Relational bullying (excluding someone in social situations, group rejection of one person)

For those of you who said you have not witnessed any bullying at school, did you think about verbal/relational bullying as well?

Also, next time, try to talk about negative incidents without using people's names (someone from the other school could be reading what you wrote about M, and it could lead to rumors or gossip about her- the internet is very public!).

I have experienced bullying in grade 3 and 4. In grade 3 I used to be friends with this girl and I used to hang out with her until, I became best friends with April. Then she got super jealous and started bullying us. I went to the school counselor and she helped us solve our problems but at the end of grade 4 she started bullying us again....... I am glad she moved to a different school.

I have got bullied before in grade one, people would call me names but because I was so young I didn't know any better so I didn't tell anyone, not even my parents. I know that wasn't the right way to solve a problem but after a couple of months I finally told the teacher and me and the student made up. If I could go back in time and solve the problem with the bully I would definitely stand up for myself now that I know better. :)

a) no i have never in person seen bullying.

b) well i would have stopped any one if there were bullying someone and i knew about it but i have not seen bullying.

A.) I have never seen or been in any bullying situations in my entire life.

B.) I couldn't do anything because I never saw a real bully.

C.) If there was a bully, I would try to tell a teacher without telling my name because telling also loses favor to some people.

B:) If I ever saw anyone getting bullied then I would tell a teacher and make sure that they were okay. Or take them to the office to get some help.

At my old school at lunch there was these two kids who got into a big fight about something, but I dont know what they were fighting about. Then it got into a physical fight. Everyone was crowding around saying "Punch him!' (These kids were in grade 7 at the time.) The teachers came out and tried to stop the fight, but after school they started again. I didnt know what to do because I was in grade 1.
