FRIDAY: TRADES AND TECHNOLOGY CAREERS

SKILLS BC PRESENTATION

Today, the students watched a presentation by DISCOVER SKILLS BC on trades and technology. They learned about the different trades and technology career opportunities that are out there. Not only do we need doctors, teachers, and accountants, but we also need tradespeople! For example, we need carpenters, welders, mechanics, and other tradespeople for life to run smoothly. The students now understand how the skills they learn in school are transferable to some of their future career choices.

1.) LA:

Complete your 'CONCRETE/SHAPE' poem in colour. If you have any questions, post them here. You may create a poem on any topic of your choice. Be sure to use colour when you place your words into your desired image.
If you want to compete in the 'ALPHABET AEROBICS' competition, you will 'BATTLE' against your classmates on Monday. Practice using actions and/or dance moves.

2.) MATH 6: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.
MATH 7: Complete the worksheet on 'AREA OF PARALLELOGRAMS'

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you listened to a presentation on 'TRADES AND TECHNOLOGY CAREERS' and participated in some hands on activities to give you a better idea of what types of jobs are considered to be part of 'TRADES AND TECHNOLOGY'.
If you had to choose a 'TRADES AND TECHNOLOGY' career, which career would you choose?
Your response should be in paragraph format.
Give an inviting lead/hook.
State your topic and your thesis (2-3 points)
Give 2-3 examples of the skills you would need to perform your job. You may talk about the different subject areas you learn in school that would help you perform your job.
Give a concluding sentence.
Ask two students about their choices.
Respond to any comments you receive.
Edit/revise your original post.

I would be an electrician because I enjoy technology. It is really interesting. Some of my family members are electrician so I know it will be fun. For example if you need help with electricity you would know how to fix it. Also it is a great career to make good money. I am going to be an electrician in university.

@Goofy a thesis statement is usually one sentence that appears at the end of the first paragraph, though it may occur as more than one. The thesis statement is developed, supported, and explained in the course of the paper by means of examples and evidence.

@ Goofy - A thesis statement is when rotate your pounts you are going to talk about. In an essay, it clearly lists your tree topics you are going to write about in your body paragraphs.

I will likely choose programming because I really like computer science. Another reason I will choose programming, is when you know programming there are millions of posibilities. You can program a app, medical suplies, robots (maybe on a planet someday), even something you have invented!!

In programming math is crucail. Without math you will be crying how bored you are (no i'm serious) and no one can really say "Oh I am going to take this job that doesn't require multiplaction" for instance all jobs require all math. That is the thing with programing. If you want to be a programmer every little thingyou learn in school, wether its math, P.E., L.A., science, history. Whatever it is it will come very handy sooner or later. Even if it is the total oppisite of programming! It will come very useful.

Science. Computer programming IS science. Technolegy is science and so is programming. You may think wildlife may not mean anything if you are a programmer (which is science) but maybe your going to program about wildlife, you never know. Electricity, Electritions!! You program on a P.C. right? So don't forget your P.C.-Makers! You can even build your on P.C. for you to program on, however you need to put the operating system in the ram disk to run it!

Langauge arts. You may think langauge arts is boring (so do I at times) but its crucial! Say you are a programmer and don't know how to spell the commands, then you can't send a letter to Apple to review your app, because you don't know how to spell, make it flow. You probaly don't even know your ABC's without L.A. Can't you believe it? Nothing is possible without school! Or maybe...

So I hope I have inspired you to try out programming... where will your program lead you..mars? an app? an operating system? Its all in your hands..

If I needed to choose a skill and technology job I would be a woodworker/carpenter. I would do this because I already enjoy woodworking and am starting a project. I believe a carpenter needs precision because without it your creation can come falling down or not work. A carpenter would also need social skills to understand what people want him/her to do. Lastly I would expect they would need attention to detail so the customer gets exactly what they want and not some crude rudimentary machine or building. That is my choice what is yours and why.

If I were to choose a trade I would choose Electrical and Telecommunications. Why I choose this you ask? Well because some of my family members are in to electronic repaires so I decided to see and take an interest myself. But that is not the only reason, I want to take an interest in this also because, I beleive teconolgy in this century will grow into something unbeleiveable.

This does not mean I know what I am going to do in th next ten years or so, it means I am planning to. Who knows if my plans will change.

I would chose the trade of culinary arts because I love to cook. I will be doing cooking later this summer for family.The only thing I cant make is stuff on the barbeque but later this year i might be able too.

The courses I would need to get into culinary arts are 1# math 2# science 3# food safe course level 1 certificate 4# reading/L.A.

Hope you learned one of the jobs I want to do when I grow up.
Also there are many different career choices.

Do you want to pay a $1000 to get your car repaired I didn't think so. I want to be a mechanic why well because I get paid a lot like I explained on the top and second when I have a car problem I don't have to pay for the trouble for example if your car is broken down and not because of low battery it might be the 2 wires that connects to the battery fell off all you have to do is reconnect it simple solution for the mechanic but not for your wallet. I think I need to take science because without science I might connect the wrong wires and burn to ashes also math because without that I couldn't add how much the parts cost and how much profits I get. I would mechanic for 2 simple reasons one it doesn't hurt my wallet when I have a problem 2 I make the best money for the simplelest reasons.

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could always eat the best food. well I would want to do culinary because I think its fun to cook. To do culinary you need to know math, science and language arts. You would need math because you need to know how to measure the ingredients the amount of food you need. you would also need science because you need to know which foods taste good mixed together and you would also need language arts because you need to know what the instructions in a recipe are saying. In conclusion I think it would be fun to do culinary.

If I would have to choose I would choose to be a chemist. You would need to know a lot of science, a little math, and of course chemistry.
You would need to know math to estimate and measure amounts.
You would need to know science to know the density of objects.
You would need to know chemistry to know what chemicals you are using.

What if you wanted to build houses? Maybe mansions or other things? What if you wanted to go beyond that expectation and build somewhere like the top of the world! To begin, my Trades and Technology career would be an Architect Engineer if it was the only one I could choose, but on the other hand I would want to choose being a Carpenter too. Let me explain why.

If you were to be a Carpenter you'd need to know your math for measuring each piece of wood and getting it quite precise, you'd need some Physical Education to carry around those huge chunks of wood or metal or maybe something else, you need to have L.A. skills to understand each concept and pattern and the designs and what not, and probably some more other things! That wasn't it, just keep reading!

If you were to be an Architect Engineer then you'd need some Math skills, some L.A., lots of P.E. and other stuff. It's practically the same things as being a carpenter. But, you can go MUCH higher than building houses or boxes! For example, you could build The Great Wall of China 2.0 if there ever will be, the worlds biggest building, A very complex looking building, a structure like the Eiffel Tower, and other stuff! Building isn't just for fun, to me its a DREAM! Before we move on, just saying you could probably build a new Safehouse for the U.S. president. Let's move on, shall we.

To conclude, both of these jobs are very different to most other career jobs, you can travel the world to build new projects for example, Bill Gates, or the M&M's company. Both job opportunities are almost like a once in a lifetime job offer, so try to study hard kids and get a good job you want! Here's mine, what's your's?

Would you want to spend a 100$ on a dinky restaurant or be able to make something way more delicious at HOME! I would probably pick the trade of culinary arts because I love food and I think that it would be way more interesting than most jobs where you have to work till you sweat. I also would enjoy being a chef because my dad is really good at cooking and his food is so good. If he really enjoys cooking why wouldn't I. I would need to be able to do math so I can measure all the ingredients. I would need to be able to do art so I have the artistic skills and the creative mind to know how to plate the food and which ingredients taste good together. And lastly, I would obviously need to know food studies so that I can cook the food properly. That is why I would want to be a chef, because it's interesting, my dad inspired me, and because I love food.

I would love to do this trade because I love to bake and I'm starting to cook and I just find it fun to create a thing that you can eat. The subjects you with me from school of are... Would you rather go to McDonald's to eat hamburgers and French fries all day? Or would you rather make a special, healthy cuisine for yourself, your friends, or family? To be honest I don't want a "Trades and Technology" job, but if I had to choose one I would probably be a chief. Today I'm going to be talking to you about on why, how, and who inspired me to be a chief. Firstly, I want to be a chief because I love healthy cuisines, I love cooking with both of my parents, and I defiantly love baking healthy treats. Secondly, I'm going to be a chief by practicing baking cuisines, reading the ingredient list carefully, following the instructions, and trying to make new foods each day. That is how I'm going to be a chief. Thirdly, I got inspired to cook from my parents because I loved their foods that they made us, and so I thought I want to be a chief just like them. I also got inspired to cook from art because I am very creative, and I love making all sorts of different designs. Above all, that is how and who inspired me to cook. Lastly, the skills I will need to become a chief is to be good at math. Why? Because if I am reading the ingredient list I would need to know how much tbsp, and how much grams are in each ingredient. I will also need to know art. Why? Because making cuisins and dinners will need amazing, beautiful, creative designs to actually make a dish.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could build your house! If you can't already tell the trade I am interested in is carpentry or woodwork. So in the next paragraph I will talk about why I like this trade and what you need to know to do it properly

I like this trade because I love building and making things. Birdhouses, fences, and maybe someday a house! But you can't just so this off the bat, you need experience. One of the big things you need to know is math and this follows for lots of jobs. Math helps because you need to be able to measure things so they are the right length and also so you can make correct blueprints. Next you will need Is wood work, this is so you are capable of using the power tools and so you know the correct way to assemble things.

Wouldn't it be amazing if you can program everything you want? I would choose Computer Numerical Control ( Programmer). It was really fun when I learned about programming in the school. The subject you need to become a programmer is Math, Language Art, and Science. First is Math because I need to calculate all the numbers and make formula that I need. Second is Language art because I need to write the code and understand the instruction. Last is Science because you programming is about computer science, so Science is one of important subject.

I want to be a fashion designer. I think that you can express a lot through clothing and I would enjoy designing clothes for other people. You need to be good with fashion. You need to be creative and you need to have a passion. With out passion it will turn out to be nothing. Passion is what makes a fashion designer.

"OMG" have you seen Tyler Oakley's new hair cut?!?" You might hear this often. But shouldn't you know what goes on behind the scenes? The hairdresser made it all happen! If I had to choose 1 skill it would be a hairdresser. To be a hairdresser you need to be good with scissors and other things like razors and hair dryers. Without this, You obviously can't be a hairdresser. You also need to have a sense in art. You need this so that you can tell whether its a good type of haircut for your costumer or not. In conclusion, I would want to be a hairdresser because of the creativity that is put into it.

If I were to get a job in trades it would be hair styling. I would choose this because I really enjoy working with hair. It is a job I've been interested in for a long while. Some subjects you have to be good in is Math, LA and Science. You have to be good in math and science because you need to do ratios when you are mixing bleach or hair dye that is also chemistry which is science. If you had choose a job in trades what would it be?

If you had to choose a Jon is trades and technology? Well I would be a hair dresser.
I love making bed head hair into pretty stylish hair, you would need to use art, because of the styling.
You would ned to use math, because of the measurements on how much hair to cut off.
You would also need to use language arts for communicating with your clients.

I didn't get to post over the weekend, so here is mine.

Billboard signs with huge, bright lettering and beautifully detailed designs. If I would want a trade job, it would be a graphic arts technician. I love art and designing things. Why though? Why would I want to be a graphic arts technician? Well keep on reading!

First of all, how fun would it be if you could design logos and pictures? I would want to be graphic arts technician because it involves art and one skill you need to have for it is art. I also love art and in the future I'm thinking of having my career focus on fine arts. You also get to design signs and have your creative imagination run wild. You would also have your design printed on anything, really. To newspapers, to hoodies, to even bus stops.

Second of all, what if you could animate you own show or movie? I have always wanted to be an animator and have my own show or movie. It would be awesome if I could make my own characters and actually have them move. It could be a 3-D or even 2-D animation for movies, shows, and even video games.

That's why I would want to be a graphic arts technician if I had to choose a trade job. It's fun, creative, and something I would enjoy doing! What about you? If you could choose any trade job, what would it be?
