Inquiry Questions

Today, we worked with Mr. Fisher (Master Inquiry Teacher) and Mrs. Altman to come up with an inquiry question that you will try to answer over the next week. Tomorrow, you will be grouped with students with similar questions. I'm looking forward to the wonderful learning that is going to take place. In math, you learned about prime and composite numbers. We will continue this lesson tomorrow.

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log in planner/calendar.

2.) MATH: You will hand in your duotangs tomorrow.

3.) PASSION PROJECT:

Upload photos you want to use directly to your Animoto file so you have it read for tomorrow.
If you are working on a mobile device, be sure to preview and finalize the video at home so you can continue editing it at school tomorrow.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about the difference between prime and composite numbers.
In your own words and in paragraph format (intro/topic sentence, body/supporting sentences, and concluding sentence), explain what prime and composite numbers are.
Be sure to include examples of both in the body of your paragraph.
Give 2 students suggestions for improvement.

Today, most modern computer cryptography works by using the prime factors of large numbers. That is how important prime numbers are to us. They have distinct and odd characteristics, and are very useful in real life, though they do become less common as the numbers go up. But, that is why it is special. There is literally an infinite number of prime numbers. First of all, what even is a prime number? A prime number is a whole number that only has two factors which is itself and one. For example, 13 is divisible by 1 and 13. That's it. Consequently, it is a prime number. On the other hand, composite numbers are those which have more than two factors. But, there are two numbers which are neither composite, nor prime. They are 1 and 0. A good way to figure out composite and prime numbers is to use the Sieve of Eratosthenes, which we did today! Hope everyone can now understand what a prime number is and how to find them.

I will simply talk or explain about what are prime and composite numbers.

Prime numbers can be just divided by itself and the number one. Example: thirteen can be just divided by itself and one.

Composite numbers have more than two factors. Example: six is a composite number. Six can be divided by one, two, three and six.

These are the differences of prime and composite numbers.

Composite numbers only have two factors. what are composite numbers? Composite numbers are basically the opposite of prime number. They are numbers that have more than two factors. Prime numbers are numbers that can ONLY be multiplied by one. Some prime numbers are 3, 11, 2, 5, 7,13, and 17. There are also many other prime numbers as well. One thing to remember is that prime numbers can ONLY have two factors. For example, 11 is equal to 11x1. 11 is one factor and 1 is another. To get 11 you can only multiply 1x11. Nothing else can equal to 11.

On the other hand, composite numbers are numbers that can be multiplied by more numbers than one. So basically in other words composite numbers have more than two factors. An example of composite numbers is 9, 8, 15, or 14. There are defined more composite numbers rather than prime numbers. As you know, 9 is a composite number. You can get 9 from multiplying 3x3 and 1x9. That’s what I think are prime and composite numbers.

Prime number is a whole number that cannot be made by multiplying other whole number.For example,5 is a prime number, it cannot multiply other whole number like 2,3,4 together to make 5. the first few prime number are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29.
composite number is a number that can exactly divided by other than 1. Example, 9 can exactly divided by 3, so, 9 is a composite number.

@ Olivia - Excellent job! You've followed the criteria and gave great examples and explaining. But next time, you should not continue sentences with just a comma. That is a run-on sentence, so next time just remember to add a conjunction (and,or,but,yet) or simply put a period! :)

A prime number is a number in which, has no factors other than one and itself. That means that the number--23--has no number can times to it other than 1, or itself,23. (23/23=1,23/1=23, 2......22 cannot divide) on the other hand, a composite number can divide into more than 1 and 120, (for instance) as it can also divide into 2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12, 24,30,40,60.(1*120=120, 2*60=120, 3*40=120 etc.)

Oh. So that's what's a prime number and a composite number. now I know that 5487952157 is a prime number because the only factors are 1 and 5487952157.

Prime, composite numbers, what are they? They are so confusing but lucky for you I am here to help you!

Prime numbers are numbers that has to factors, 1 and the number itself. I know that sounds very confusing but I will give some examples to go with it, numbers like 2 and 3 are prime numbers because they can only be divided by 1 or the number itself which is 2 or 3. When trying to figure out if a number is a prime number or a composite number, you must see if the number is dividable by any other number then 1 and the number itself. If not, it is a composite number.

A composite number is the opposite of a prime number, for example 21, It can be divided by: 1, 3, 21, and 7. 21 is a composite because it has more than 2 factors, which in meaning composite numbers have to have more than 2 factors which I said before it is the opposite of prime numbers.

If prime numbers were confusing before I hope it is not now.
In conclusion, prime numbers have to have 2 factors, no more than that and composite numbers have to have 2 or more factors.

Prime numbers have two factors: 1 and the number itself. I know that sounds very confusing but there some examples given to you for explanation purposes. Numbers like 2 and 3 are prime numbers because they can only be divided by 1 or the number itself which is 2 or 3. I will tell you how to differ from prime numbers to composite numbers. Firstly, you must see if the number is dividable by any other numbers instead of one and itself. After you have calculated it, you must see if it only has 2 factors which are 1 and the number itself.

A composite number is the opposite of a prime number, for example 21. It can be divided by 1, 3, 21, and 7. Thus, 21 is a composite number. Assumingly, someone drew a different conclusion but 21 has more than 2 factors. It would mean 21 is a composite number. Same steps should be followed as concluding prime numbers. If the number has 2 or more factors, it is a composite number.

In conclusion, prime numbers have to conclude only 2 factors whereas composite numbers have to conclude 3 or more factors.

It's primes and composite numbers and I don't know how to do it! luckily Mr.Hong told me what it is. First of all I am going to explain what a prime number is. A prime number is a number that you can only have two question's answer to. For example two is a prime number because only one times two or two times one equals two. Now it is the composite numbers. They are basically the opposite of prime numbers, there has to be more than two answers from a question to be a composite numbers. Like six is a composite number, this is true because three times two, two times three,one times six and six times one all is six

The difference between a prime number and a composite number is that “a prime number only has one factor, one and itself.” We can use the number 5 to set an example. 5 can only be multiple by 1, which means 1 (one) x 5 (itself) = 5. So now, I can tell the number 5 is a prime number. What is a composite number then? Well, you can think it as the opposite way from a prime number. “A composite number always has more than 2 factors.” This time, let’s use the number 6 to set an example. We know that 1 x 6 = 6, but have you notice that there’s another way to get 6? Hey, 2 x 3 = 6! So from that, I can clearly understand what’s the difference between a prime and a composite number!

There are two types of numbers, PRIME and COMPOSITE. Here I will explain what each of those are, and how they are different!

PRIME: A prime number has only one factor, the number "one" and itself.
eg. 5 has only one factor: 1x5.
eg. 7 has only one factor: 1x7
eg. 9 has only one factor: 1x7

COMPOSITE: A composite number has more than just one factor.
eg. 4 has 2 factors: 1x4, 2x2
eg. 6 has 2 factors: 1x6, 2x3
eg. 9 has 2 factors: 1x9, 3x3

Lets start with the prime numbers. prime numbers are any whole number that only has two factors, one and itself. (e.g. 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29)

Composite numbers are the opposite of prime numbers. So any whole number that has more than two factors. (e.g. 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15). Now you know what prime and composite numbers are!

Today, I learned about the Sieve of Eratosthenes. It's basically an easy way of finding prime and composite numbers. If you have absolutely no idea what a prime or composite number is, in the following paragraphs, I will define these two terms for you!

A prime number is a whole number that has ONLY two factors, one and itself. For example, 101 and 103 are prime number because 101x1=101, and 103x1=103.

A composite number is a whole number that has MORE THAN TWO factors. For example, 64 has more than two factors because 1x64=64, 2x32=64, 4x16=64, and 8x8=64.

(One is not Prime or Composite, because it only has one factor: 1.)

Congratulations! Now you know the definition of prime and composite numbers!

Today, I learned about the Sieve of Eratosthenes. It's an easy way of finding prime and composite numbers, developed by the ancient Greek scientist Eratosthenes. Have you ever wondered what prime and composite numbers are?

A prime number is a whole number that has ONLY two factors, one and itself. Let's look at the number 103. 103=1x103. Since the number 103 only has two factors, 1 and 103, so it is a prime number.

A composite number is a whole number that has MORE THAN TWO factors. Let's say we have the number 64. 64 has the factors 1, 64, 4, 16, 8, 2, and 32. Since 64 has more than two factors, it is a composite number.

There is a number that does not meet the criteria for prime or composite numbers: the number one. One is not prime or composite, because it only has one factor: 1.

How about zero? I think that zero is a composite number, since it has more than two factors (0x1, 0x2, 0x3, 0x4); anything multiplied by zero equals zero.

In conclusion, prime numbers have two factors, while composite numbers have more than two factors, and one is neither prime or composite.

Okay so first, lets cover the prime number.

A prime number is a number that only has two factors, meaning that it only has two numbers that can be multiplied into itself and those two numbers should only BE that number and 1. For example, 3. There isn’t another number that can be multiplied into 3, other than itself and 1.

Second, composite numbers.

A composite number is a number that has MORE than 2 factors, meaning that numbers other than THAT number or 1 can also be mutiplied into that number. For example, 12. There are a lot of ways to make 12. Like 1 x 12, 2 x 6 and 3 x 4.

So that’s my explanations on prime numbers and composite numbers. For anyone that’s confused, I hoped it helped.

Most people who are just learning about prime numbers would not have any questions, but at one point there might be a question of 'why do we need prime numbers?'. As you are still learning and working with primes, that one question has a possibility of laying dormant in your head. To answer this question you can simply look it up, and one the most important uses is modern cryptography, or encryption.

Now, what is a prime number? The most simple answer is a number that has only two factors, 1 & itself. If a number has more than one number, it will be identified as a composite number. One thing that many people have made a mistake on is describing 2 as a composite number, but when you test it 2 = 2 * 1, there are no other factors. eg. 3 = 3 * 1, 5 = 5 * 1, 37 = 37 * 1. For every number that is not a prime number, it will be identified as a composite number. Composite numbers are the opposite of primes, in the fact that all composite number have more than just two factors. eg. 4 = 2 * 2/ 4 * 1, 10 = 5 * 2/ 10 * 1.

Primes have been separated for different uses, for that reason it is important to learn about these to have the ability to pursue a job possibly requiring knowledge of prime numbers.

Well here let me brake down what primes are: so basically primes are a multiplication question that has only ONE one equation. Ow how I remember how to do little math
“Well let’s get right into learning, Boooyaaaa!”says Mr.Hong
Now the main things in math are equations and that is what we are now using to indentify what is a prime # and a compasite #

Prime #s
Prime #s are basically a # that can only have 2 factors
eg.=2 can be split like 2x1. And these #are the 2# ^ ^

And a compasite # is a # that CAN have MORE that 2 factors
eg= 24 can have many factors like 2x12, 3x8, 4x6, 1x24
So that 48 different factor and that called a compasite #
