MARATHON OF HOPE AND THE INQUIRY PROCESS

Terry Fox Run

Today, we started the day off by participating in the Terry Fox Run. We walked over to Oak park and ran for a short time before heading back to the school. Can you believe the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over 750 million dollars for cancer research? Later, we started learning about the inquiry process. Mr. Fisher reviewed the different parts to an inquiry. We will be working on learning how the inquiry process works over the next few weeks before diving into our Social Studies inquiry questions.

Immunizations are tomorrow.

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log it in your planner/calendar.

2.) MATH:

Complete your handout from class today and any corrections you haven't done yet. Notebooks must be handed in tomorrow.

3.) SOCIAL STUDIES/INQUIRY:

Come up with 5 SELF and 5 WORLD questions. These should be questions you are genuinely interested in learning about.
If you have any questions, please post them here.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

We have been learning a lot about self-regulation strategies in class.
In paragraph form (intro/topic sentence, body/supporting sentences, and concluding sentence), write about a few strategies you use at home that helps you self-regulate.
Give 1-2 people suggestions for improvement based on the above criteria and the givens mentioned previously.

Up and down and up and down. Wow, this is so fun! I feel like doing this-"Colin, where did the tanks go in the Canadian revolution, 1963?" said Mr. Hong. I did not get a single word he said.

That's why you need self-regulation. These are five ways that you can self regulate.
1. Do not sit beside someone you talk to a lot, because when the teacher is speaking, you probably would be talking about Fortnite or Minecraft or something like that.
2. Listen. You would find that magically, you know everything after listening and paying attention to the teacher.
3. Do not bring a phone or any device. If you do, then you would probably be texting to your friends or playing Pub-G while the teacher is speaking.
4. Do not bring any toy or anything to play with because once you solve the Rubik's cube you will see an angry teacher face in front of you when you look up.
5. Have fun! If you think social studies are boring, you will get bored, and stop paying attention, but if you try to make it more fun, you will have fun and keep paying attention.

Those are five ways that you can be self-regulated. Now I know where the tanks went! ^-^

Bang! Right now I got tripped by my brother. I'm now angry. Crash! my I pad fell on the floor and cracked. Cut! You probably know what zone I'm in, the BLACK zone. I right now really need to calm down.

Some ways to calm down and self- regulate is maybe to think positive; okay, maybe the I pad still works. I can have some fun when my back pain goes away; I watch some TV. Maybe try to fix the problem; I go to the electronic store to get my i pad fixed, and go to the doctor to check my back. Now I'm in the yellow zone, just one more thing. Suddenly my brother comes and says sorry. I feel much better now, because maybe someone else could help you stay self -regulated too.

Now I am not angry anymore and know how to self regulate now.

Sometimes if you are calm and think how to solve the problem when someone does something bad to you, it can help you self-regulate. A day as usual, I went home from school. When I went to wash my hands in the wash room. My naughty sister opened my school bag and took out my art project and accidentally fell off on the ground. It was broken into two pieces. At first, I was calm. Second, I thought of the way to solve the problem with my sister. Last, we made the greatest art project. These strategies can help me self-regulate.

@ Adrian - I like how you not only solved the problem, but made the art even better! I like how you thought positively and created another one! Though, careful not to forget the verb/action of the sentence. For example, "mad" is not a verb but an adjective. Next time, make sure to add one! :)

Relaxing and watching TV to help stay calm is that what you to stay in your green zone? If it is how does it help?

the way it helps me is because there is so much to watch on the internet and to be able to have access to watch TV and some of my favorite TV shows it makes me happy and not stressed out. I also love to play video games on my PC, because i feel like im another world no one can bother me its just me and my video games.

@ Sameer - I like your strategy to ignore everything and forget about it by doing something else! It is a great way to self-regulate. Though, be careful of run-on sentences. Having lots to say is okay, but just make sure that they are not run-ons. :)

Self-regulating is an important thing, a few strategies I use at home to self regulate are taking deep breaths. Taking deep breaths can calm you down and give you many other ways to solve a problem. Sometimes thinking over it can give you time to think over what happend. Also ignoring the problem or thing can also help. One of my favourite ways to self regulate are doing something that I like and it clams myself down.

Self-regulation is the ability to manage your emotions and behavior in accordance of the situation. It includes being able to control yourself when you are in a highly emotional reactions, and it is a set of skills that is very useful. Here are some few strategies I use at home that helps me self-regulate.First I always listen to the music, and read a good book. Also sometimes I walk around the house, playing with my toy.

1.) Self questions - Questions that are focused on you. For example, I wonder how I can make fire. (or) I wonder how salt is made.

2.) World questions - Questions that have to do with things that aren't directly related to you. For example, How can we solve the problem of world hunger. (or) How can we stop countries from fighting with one another?

Sometimes I have trouble self-regulating at home. I can get frustrated by my brother when he plays around too much. I use some simple methods to self-regulate when I can't take it anymore.

The first method I use to self-regulate is breathe. I go outside and take a big breath of the fresh air. I look at the birds and the tall trees and appreciate all the beauty around me.

The second method I use is to do crafts. I enjoy making things even though they do not come out that beautiful. I find crafts calming and peaceful.

these are some of my methods that I use when I lose some self-control at home.

most of the time, I don't have a good self-regulating at home, because when I went home, I feel relax, it is the place where I can truly relax. I have some method If I am not self-regulating at home. I will go to my bedroom and try to read a book, I like to read book when I am not self-regulating because I can put my myself in to the story, after, I feel like nothing bad was happen.
My second method is to lie on my bed and try to not thinking any thing at all, it is simple but it is very helpful.

Self regulation is important, but it is quite difficult to regulate yourself, especially when there are distractions all around. But no matter where you are, you need to regulate yourself.

At home, when I'm in the red zone, and something makes me very angry, I slowly count to ten in my head and take 10 deep breaths. Sometimes, even if I take 10 deep breaths, I'm usually still a little mad, so I just listen to music and relax. Listening to music helps keep me in the green zone because I get to focus on the melody and forget about my surroundings.

Other times, I get mad over very little things, such as my parents won't let me buy something; then I am in the yellow zone. It helps me by talking with parents and letting them explain why I cannot buy what I wanted. Talking about it helps greatly since it allows me to reflect on what I did wrong and learn from my mistakes.

I have learned a lot about self regulation at school this month, and I have realized that self regulation is very important. I can be very regulated at school, but I have to regulate myself at home too, so I use these strategies and techniques to keep myself regulated and in the green zone.

The Terry Fox run was very interesting, but if we have to do something like Terry, we should give money and to people with cancer and homeless people, who are less fortunate than us. During the run I said "Maybe I can "walk" it off."

If you could do anything to make the world a better place, and why? Every time I going shopping with my mum, I asked if we can give homeless people some food. One thing you should never do is tease and brag about how much you have, and do it in front of the homeless people.

Do you find it hard to self-regulate in class, well you’re in luck because i am going to tell you 4 methods to calm down in class and be focused?

The first method is one that everyone should know, to not sit beside someone you know you will be distracted with, it would help you by listening to the teacher so that you know what to do and do not need the teacher to repeat it. The second trick is to not do anything that would distract yourself or your peers beside you, like clicking your pen or pencil, playing on your phone texting people and passing notes. The third one is a really simple one, you must listen to your teacher, it’s that easy! It’s like ordering something online, instead of clicking a button you would flick a switch in your brain to do so! The last but not lease is to make sure to have fun learning it, when you are noting having fun your brain would drift away from what you are suppose to do to be thinking about games and other stuff that would not let you listen.

When my sliblings are yelling or screaming at each other, I get mad and I cannot do my homework.
These are some ways I self-regulate:
The first thing I do is move somewhere else so my slibling don’t disturb me
The second thing I do is reading or colouring because when I am stressed out, reading or colouring calm me down.
The third thing I do is listen to music so I don’t listen to my slibling’s arguments.
The fourth thing I do is stretch. Stretching helps me stay calm because when my sliblings see me stretch, they know that is the last phase before I yell at them.
The last thing I do is tell my parents to deal with them.

My sister stuffed kale in my mouth because she knows I hate it. (she does that stuff all the time) I got really mad and in the red zone (like always) but since it happened so many times already I learned how to self-regulate. First I tell somebody(in this case my mom) about it, telling somebody about it makes me feel much better for some reason. (I think most people are like that) Then I take deep breaths. Last I go and sit by myself for a while and that gets me mostly in the green zone again!

There are many times when both of my brothers annoy me and make me sad and mad. So here are a few strategies that help me to self regulate so I don't accidentally hurt someone or get hurt.

1.I read a book: Reading books always helps me self regulate. It makes me calm and makes me forget about the bad things thats happening, and I become more focused on the book instead.

2.I think happy thoughts: If my little brother annoys me (which he does like 1000 times a day) I think of happy thoughts like a dolphin happily munching on a donut or me flying through the air with a dog at my side.

3.Ignoring them: The easiest way is to just ignore my brother when he taunts me, and as time passes, my annoyance fades away into the background like it was never there...like that dolphin munching on the donut while flying with a dog at it's side.

Hey! But I do have some strategies to help me clam myself down. Usually when I got mad, my minds couldn’t think properly. I admit! It’s really possible to speak out of control, such as saying something that wasn’t very nice. So at a moment like this, my experience tells me to stay quiet, or just keep my mouth shut. This time, I’ll go back to my room, either starting listen to music, or doing something that keeps me away from the stress. These are the most useful ways I used to clam me down. What I found interesting about this. It’s that every time after I finally clam myself down. I realize that how stupid am I to easily get mad at someone or something. I usually take it really really easy! Not kidding, I can forgot it like......? A few minutes later. Same as refreshing my minds? So, I think I got more and more thoughtful each every day, knowing what should I do when I got in some kinds of situation. Having the ability to control myself!

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.... a tiny little rocket blasts of into the starry night. I always close my eyes and picture this rocket blasting off whenever I go into the red zone.

You can always just walk away and have some alone time to just sit there and think, maybe you could even have a little cry. Some people just find that a good little cry. There’s actual scientific research from the Indiana University that stated that sportsmen who let themselves cry after losing a match perform better in the long term. Just take a deep breath and relax. Remember, you can’t prevent your emotions but you can always do SOMETHING that can help regulate them.

Great job Emily. I just tried the rocket one and it's pretty cool! Where'd you hear a method like that from anyways? I would love to know haha. Okay, anyways, just wanted to say that I liked your methods. Deep breathes don't really help me that much because they make me even more nervous and frustrated, personally but it could definitely help a lot of others.

@ Emily - Great post. I agree, a good cry sometimes makes everyone feel better. Some people keep things in until they feel like exploding, which isn't a good thing. I think crying helps the balloon deflate without exploding. Part of the Zones of Regulation includes recognizing when you are about to go into the red zone and doing something to help yourself out of it. :-)

Self regulating is hard when you don't have good strategies.

My first strategy is to just take some deep breaths. They actually calm you a lot if you make your mind blank at the same time. Although if you're really going to lose it, this won't help that much. My second strategy is just to think positive, like "At least she didn't tell me that I have to wake up early EVERY day" or something like that. My third strategy is to just go into another room and think things in my mind instead of just losing my mind and going crazy.

This is basically what I do to self-regulate at home (with my annoying sister).

Take a piece of paper and scribble on it until all your anger is gone.

So for me, this method works a lot. Usually when I'm in a bad mood in class, what I would do is scribble or doodle on paper. It's why I always carry a notebook on me and it really helps. Another method would be stress balls or something you could play with when your stressed out that won't distract others. I remember that last year, I had this small fluffy bunny that I would squeeze and play with when I feel stressed out in class. Personally, I have really bad anxiety issues and it would happen a lot before school. I would get really nervous to go to school for some reason. I also get morning anxiety a lot and what happens is that you'd wake up in the morning and you kind of just have a panic attack for no reason. I would get it during class too sometimes and these methods just really help. I don't think I have a disorder with anxiety. I've never been diagnosed. I just know that I have bad anxiety issues.

So, these are the methods that I use and I hope other people could possibly find good use with them too if they don't have one yet.

REGULATING
One really BIG thing about regulating is u having to control your self and not acting out of the ordinary or going crazy just move away from that person or thing that is making your do things u wouldn’t do, and if it a toy then just put on the other side of the table and just selfregulate yourself and become the real u and stay that way and help others, if your distracting someone and u know your not suppose to, then just do for your friend and move away!

Self regulate? Self regulate? Let me think what can I do to self regulate myself? Maybe sometime shows leave go away from the guy that you get mad or go to a room and just watch YouTube that’s what I do and it works pretty well yeah I don’t really get mad easily so I don’t lose control at all that’s why I don’t have so many self regulation strategies.
