Monday: Child Labour Practices

2/25/2013

Today, the students researched the labour practices of different products and companies . They found reliable information about different companies around the world that have children working in their factories under substandard conditions. Other students have already started doing more research on this topic and have taken it upon themselves to do their best not to purchase any products that have been made without taking human rights into consideration. I applaud the students who have taken this stance!

Adults get exposed to salt extraction in Niger, making their skin cracked and dry and exposing them to dust inhalation. children working on salt mines normally work eight hours a day and get no pay.

When the dust is going in to the skin thier vision can also be damage badly.Children and adults working in salt mines work for 8 hours a day for no pay. Some children work somewhere else to get money but not all cant because thier being forced to work no matter what. Most kids have to drop out of school to do this.

I am doing my child slavery on Combodia and my product is on rubber.
First of all many army go into villages to get people to work for there rubber companies. The big thing that the slaves do is tapping trees for rubber to get the rubber you want from trees you have to do first scrap off all the bark on the tree but make sure you do not cut to deep. Then stuff called latex comes out of the tree and usally the people put it in to a cup then they collected the latex and go back to the factory and do all the other stuff to actully make rubber. Some slaves in Cambodia are held to be working for however long in what ever condition eg. bad,ok,horrible,good condistion. Cambodia uses force labour also child labour for the making of rubber.

Problem- Child Labour
Country- Cambodia
Product- Rubber
Summary- Cambodia is a horrible pace for child labour so many kids have to work in horrible shape at such a young age just to get 40cents each day that is horrible. Now I will talk about rubber, they make kids work for rubber companies and the main thing they do all day is tap trees for latex (latex is a liquid that can be made into rubber). First they have a carving knive and they take layers off the tree until they hit a point of where latex comes out so they get all the latex in a bowl and then take it back to there factories to do the rest and actully make it in to rubber. The way that these companies get the people to do this is by sending a army unit into the village or villages and grab people to do this who might not want to do it and they do it for low pay each day they work in about any condition.

Most rugg producing countries including Iran, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Egypt and others have outlawed in child labor. Child Labor is even rare in Afghanistan. But sadly also in Pakistan and India still allow Child labor and even worse child slavery. They illegally do child labour because they are just too plain lazy to do it themselves... So your carpet is probably an iteam made by a bleeding child being whipped to do work for there rulers, yup. If you had a choice to stop child labour would you? Because I would. I think its horrible.

I am doing Niger and the product is Gold
About 70 percent of the children working in gold mines are under the age of 15. Also did you know that Sixty seven people died in November 2001, including at around six kids in Columbia, one of there gold mine. Soldiers, mostly older boys, who were forced into gold mining by militias continue to mine to earn money. Because they had no education and are left behind from family leaving them.

48% of the jobs in Paraguay are from agriculture, such as cotton. So the big companies make kids, mainly boys, to go and work for them. In 2005, 110,966 kids are in child labour. The minimum age to work is 12 in Paraguay, even though there are children as young as 10 or maybe even younger that work. I think, that they do not know about their Human Rights. Because if they knew about them, then they wouldn’t allow other people to “ control “ them.

Cotton working is very harsh, especially for kids. In Argentina, a 13 year old boy named Juan had trained his little sister how to get cotton. They had to get 100 kilograms of cotton, and they only get paid 10 pesos! Also, the cotton could be bad for your health. You can get cuts, get allergic, get asthma, and possibly skin cancer. 48% of the jobs in Paraguay are from agriculture, such as cotton. In Senegal every person has the same job working in the gold mines. They start at the age of 7
and work from then on. They work so they have enough money to eat. If they don’t work they get threatened with physical punishment.

Point 1: Christmas Decorations
Some chinese factories that make christmas decorations have been found to demand employees to work for 24 hours solid. Others pay only 44 cents which is less than half of the legal limit.

Point 2: Overtime begins in September for chinese factories producing christmas lights for sale in the U.S. Overtime is at least 3 extra hours, plus Saturday and Sunday, bringing the average overtime to 100-140 per month. The legal limit is 36 hours.

Point 1: A raid on an Indian sweatshop freed 14 children -- some as young as 8 years old -- who had been kept in slave-like conditions making Christmas decorations allegedly bound for the West, Yahoo! reports.
The children were kept in tiny rooms, working 19 hours a day to create the festive trinkets, according to the outlet.
Last week's raid was led by human rights group Global March for Children, which according to its website is a long-time partner of the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), as well as UNICEF.
Global March received support from former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who now serves as the United Nations' special envoy for global education. Brown released a video of the conditions in the sweatshop, which he hopes will put pressure on India and the international community to put a stop to child labor, Yahoo! notes.
In a column written for the Huffington Post, Gordon went into further detail about the raid. He wrote:
The suffering of these young children, cruelly trafficked into slave labour, is the real Christmas story of 2012. Their plight must become a wake-up call for all concerned about the treatment of vulnerable children around the world. It demands we move immediately to ban all child labor.
"There is no parent in the world who would ever want their child to be subjected to conditions that you see in these films of children in dingy basements," Gordon said, according to Yahoo!, "without air, without food, without proper care, being forced into child labor for all these hours of the day. I think every parent who sees these films will want this practice brought to an end as quickly as possible."
The United Nations estimated that 55 million children aged 5 to 14 were currently employed in India, the Telegraph reported in 2007. That number has gone down, according to the Washington Post, which reported that a 2009 survey by the Statistics Ministry put the number at about 5 million. However, the newspaper also notes that UNICEF puts the number at about 28 million children.
This December, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and Global March Against Child Labour (GMACL) organized a month-long campaign against child labor and trafficking in Assam, a northeastern state of India, The Sentinel reports. The campaign will kick off with a "March against Child Labour and Trafficking." Starting on Saturday, the marchers will walk 300 kilometers (nearly 190 miles), ending up three days later in Dhubri.
Several child labor activists and organizations, including GMACL and Gordon Brown, are pushing the Indian Parliament to vote for an amendment to existing laws that would abolish all forms of child labor for those up to 14 years of age, according to GMACL
Until now, the country had stopped short of banning all child labor, due to a worry that it would hurt poor families that depend on their children's wages to make ends meet, according to the Post.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Indian government is also under pressure to meet the 2016 International Labour Organization’s deadline for the abolition of the worst forms of child labor.

most soccer balls sold at walmart and other (american) stores are made by young children. So now many stores put signs that say they don't use child labor but in reality children as young as six years old actually sewed those signs on.

About 15% of the world's diamonds are blood diamonds. They are called blood diamonds because they used children to mine them and they do this in Congo. But there wages are really bad they get less than a dollar a day. They also, have no clean water to drink and no food to eat. Lastly, they are children they are not suppose to work they are suppose to play and have fun. Besides being grossly underpaid, many diamond miners work in extremely dangerous conditions. Like they do not have the proper tools to mine and they do not have any safety gear like hard hats and shoes. They can also get killed on land slides and cave-ins or tool malfunctions.

Some of the chocolate that's is sold around the world is made of child labour. They also use about 4000 kids are for spraying pesticides on the cocoa trees which is a hazardous job that poor kids who are under so young are forced to do. Children are usually trafficked, sold, and sometimes kidnapped to go and work at cocoa fields. Some of the kids who work in these cocoa fields are not free to leave and they have high risk of getting exploited. Some of the kids who work in these areas have to carry large and heavy sacs to their villages. Most of the kids doing this are not given the proper tools for working and sometimes they are given harmful stuff like machetes.

Since Easter is approaching the sales for chocolate ins increasing and most of the time when you buy it them you don't realize the secret ingredient which is child labour, so before you buy the chocolate think of the kids who are giving up their child hood to make us feel good. Most of the kids doing this are not given the proper tools for working and sometimes they are given harmful stuff like machetes. The major companies should use their power to reduce or end child labour in the cocoa industry.

Lots of accidents happen due to mining. In February 2007, Freddy Alexander Chaparro Molina died when he was 13 because of a mining accident in Colombia. In Pakistan, boys start working in the mines when they’re 13, and they have to stop working until they’re 30 because of ill health, and their lungs become worn out by coal dust. In Boyaca state alone in 2003, there were 520 children working in coal mines. Also, in China, coal is one product that is mined using forced labour in labour camps and prisons. Finally, over 20% of miners in the artisanal coal mines in Nalaikh District of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia are children.

The story to that was the belgium came to that country because there where no mines but when they got there there was kids asking for money they said the could work in the mines so they did. They got little pay and so they would work even longer and eventualy leading to go to work at five in the morning and leaving at like eleven.

Did you know that thousands of children in west Africa are forced to labour in the product of cocoa. These children that are working for cocoa are working hard punshing hours, using dangerous tools and facing exposure in crueling heat. The children who work for cocoa do not have the right to education and freedom, children are sometimes kidnapped and sold from there relatives to work in these cruel horrible places.

Young children often work in the mines and hide diamonds in there mouths to make a little bit of money. The Kimberley Process of Diamond Certification is more concerned about their diamonds and less concerned about the children that are working for them. Also Diamond miners in Sierra a lot of the time are working under a sponsor system, there sponsor will give them financial support.

The dust that comes from the coal is hazardous to anyone, when presented to a child, terrible outcomes may occur. Coal mining is pure cruelty and the children are paid very poorly. The children mining have been kept slaves and don't have a great education or maybe not even have an education.

This is very bad because this job has a lot of risks, because approximately 70 percent of children are under age of 15, work in the danger mines! Also children are at higher risks because of unclean water, and diseases. Worst of all nearly sixty seven children died during november 2001 due to the cave walls collapsing and drowning the people inside of deep piles of mud and rocks, and some still work in the, what I call “death mines”.

There are about 100,000 child workers in Lebanon. (Some are as young as 8 years old) According to this website, 1 quarter of child workers in Lebanon are in the tobacco industry. The result of working at such a young age can leave a negative impact on the child since many children still have to focus on their school work. The head of each industry pays each child worker less than required, and they most likely don’t care about each child. They say in Lebanon there is no forced labour, but it is not 100% true because you can’t see everything that is happening.However, since they say it is not forced labour, the child only does it for a specific reason like helping their family. According to BBC news.com, most of the child laborers in Lebanon work without supervision. They do not even have proper clothing to protect them from the dangers of different tools.

It is said that there are nearly 100,000 workers in Lebanon that are children, and some are as little as 8 years old. There are many jobs for the children like begging for money to bring for their parents or selling items at the little market. However, those are just little jobs for the children. One quarter of these children work in the tobacco industry. The legal limit for these children to be working is 14. However children that are 14-18 are not allowed to work for more than 6 hours a day.

I am doing Ecuador. More than 455,000 children under the age of 15 are working in brick factory's. They work for about 15 hours a day with no breaks.

Children as young as 8 years old are sold by their families to work at garment shops and the children that get sold to go there don’t even get paid. Also some children are forced to work from midnight to dawn in sweat shops. Some children have their passports and identities are taken away.The children have to work for at least 72 hours and if the children fall asleep they are beaten.
