MONDAY: Introductory Paragraphs

1/14/2013

The students dove into their writing today and learned how to identify introductory remarks, thesis statements, and plans. Afterwards, they dove a little deeper into their writing and learned about 7 different types of introductory remarks. (See Handout). Afterwards, the students worked on their introductory paragraphs using several different styles/types. Students will continue working on their essays over the next few weeks, will self and will continue to receive feedback and act on the feedback they receive to further improve their writing.

1.) MATH 6

Division handout and Pg. 307-308 Questions #1, 2, 5, and 6. (Mark answers with back of text)
Complete estimates/calculations on paper.
QUESTION: If your parents were to give you $500, estimate about how many shares of Microsoft you would be able to buy. Post your explanation in words and numbers.

MATH 7 - Any assigned work. Check your math teacher's website.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit Judy Moody's Photo Blog
Comment on at least 1 of her images and give her some feedback. Gr. 7 students, feel free to give her some suggestions on what she can do to improve on her composition based on what you learned about photography last year.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Post one of your introductory paragraphs for your New Year's Resolution essay here. Be sure to indicate the type of intro you used for your post.
Remember to use one of the different types of introductory paragraphs that you learned about (refer to your booklet/handout)

New Year’s Resolution No. 1

Intro- [You may think that a new year’s resolution is not very important but in some cases it is. For example losing weight, getting fit and any one to do with losing weight or getting healthy is a really common goal but around 90% of people do not complete their goals that they set on new year’s day.]( New year’s resolutions are hard to do especially if they are hard to complete.) <The first thing that will help you complete it is think about your goal when you are not really doing anything, try really hard to keep it in your mind and lastly, do the resolution asap.>

Homework is a time waster, and it will never help you in life. Just Kidding! Homework isn't a time waster, you just need to know how to control your time productively and will help you in life, as long as you know how to use it. Even though many people may think homework is a waste of time, it’s actually not! I like doing my homework, but lately I have not been to productive with my time. What I will this year to be a goal setter, and achieve my new years resolution is to be more productive with my time, post on the class website whenever I am actually able to, and to finish most of my homework at school.

As the clock struck twelve we all ran outside and said’ Happ- Trip ‘’face plant’’ For my New Years resolution I would like to learn to draw a lot better than I do now. I would like to be able to draw a animal. For example, cat dog fish mouse, etc. because if I actually try to draw any animal at all it will look horrible. And I would like to draw on my spare time, I would not read a book on spare time because that is just plain boring.

-I think you should add in the different brackets to show your understanding of the structure in an intro paragraph.

As of right now, 1 MSFT share is 26.89 and I had 5000.

5000÷26.89 I round 26.89 to 25 first then I do 5000÷25 which equals 500, so I could buy 500 shares with $5000

[ Did you know about 45% of people on earth make new years resolutions but only about 12% of those people stick with it. Thats not many people. I am going to be one of those people who completes it]. (My resolution is to complete all of my homework the day it is assigned so that I don’t have to worry about it the next morning). <To complete this goal I will need to much be more organized, Check my backpack everyday so I can make sure I have everything I need and thirdly to complete as as I can in school so I have less at home.>

Math is boring math is hard math is not fun. Well without math we wouldn’t be so smart. Its a good thing that math is a subject because later on in life we will need to know what are times table are. Without math then we wouldn’t know how to mentally calculate. To be good at math, you will need to study hard and practice lots!. If you practice lots then you will be better at math. To complete my resolution I will study hard in math and practice lots also, be more active in the class.

Your intro paragraph looks pretty good, but there are a couple suggestions I have for you. Firstly, you don't have a thesis statement or a plan in you intro. If your not that sure what that is or your a little confused about it I suggest you re-read the booklet we got yesterday to get a better understanding. Secondly, if you re-read your paragraph you will notice that you say New Years resolution a lot. I suggest that you use more transition words to make it "flow" better. I also noticed there were a few grammar and punctuation errors. Lastly, I highly suggest you to add more detail, because there really isn't that much detail, but remember it doesn't have to be really long just an average size. [For my New Years resolution I would like to learn to draw a lot better than I do now. I would like to be able to draw a animal]. (For example, cat dog fish mouse, etc. because if I actually try to draw any animal at all it will look horrible). <And I would like to draw on my spare time, I would not read a book on spare time because that is just plain boring. >

What would you chose to do on your spare? Would you, Draw? Or would you read a Book?

For my New Years resolution I plan on learning to draw better, and improve on how well I can draw at the moment. I would like to be able to draw a variety of animals in the future, without copying it from a drawing book, because if I try now to draw any animal without a reference, it would look absolutely horrid. I would also like to be able to draw in my free time, and not have to read a novel, because I find that less entertaining.

That New Year's, as children gathered to watch the events, a pair of fireworks rose into the sky and said. "YOU WANT TO GO INTO SPACE? YEAAAAAAAAA!" and then exploded, or, that's what a procrastinating child was thinking while trying to do her schoolwork, that child was me, and my New Year's Resolution is to stop procrastinating all of the time, well, how should a girl who is imagining talking fireworks get to stop her frivolous procrastinating and do more important things? Well, that was going to be changed through her Resolution. Fact is, in our time procrastinating is popular throughout most of the people my age, and since we have so many things to do other than work, it's easy not to do it, and I don't want to be stuck like that, so these are my plans for success, quickly, TO SPACE, okay not really but you catch my drift, to stop this rut we need to go through one steps like learning ways to steer away from distractions, how to keep on track and how to train your brain to stay on task.

Or maybe on Monday you told yourself that you would finish your school project, and now today it’s Thursday you haven’t even started and the project is due tomorrow. Everyday people all over the world procrastinate, most people don’t even know that they are. Sadly, I am one of those people. So because of this my New Years resolutution is to be more productive with my time and not procrastinate. I noticed that you there wasn't any thing missing except the brackets from the first draft. I could easily find the intro remark, thesis statement and the plan. I put some commas in places because it would look nicer, other than that, you did a great job.

Now the moment you have all being wating for 3,2,1 the drop of the ball it's New Years. So now I am going to talk about my New Years resolution my my goal this year is to finish all my homework on time or earlier. The way I am going to do that is by not wating until the last day to finish I will do it the second I have time and doing this will really help me with my grades because that is my second resolution it's to improve on my grades at school so I will practice and study to do that.

Have you ever picked a fight with your brothers? Have you every made a New Years resolution like that. Well sense we are the topic my resolution is to stop havering fights with my brothers. So no more fighting, picking on each other, and no more complaining to them when they are baby sitting. The three thing I am going to do are being nicer, stop making trouble, and walk a way when they annoy me.

Well I have in fact I do want to get better grades and better at getting my home work done. I will set up an alarm and get parents to remind me right in my planner,not let my mind get distracted by my own mind and if I have a question at home or school i will ask the question

The closing price of MSFT is 27,21. I round that to 25. then I divide it by 5000. The quotion of that is 500. so I can buy AROUND 500 shares of MSFT with $5000.

New Years resolutions are made by people that feel guilty about things they did wrong during the last year. A new years resolution can be made any time; the reason people like to do this at New Years is the fact that after the holidays of eating too much and doing nothing when they get back into the year of work and school set up a resolution on improving.
