Monday: STATES OF MATTER

2/18/2013

Today, students completed their Spring Reflections using sandpaper and crayons. The students were surprised at how they were able to create such unique images by ironing the backsides of the sandpaper onto cardboard paper. The students noticed that they were able to get a good speckled pattern if they ironed the sandpaper for a shorter amount of time. They also learned that if you hold the iron on the sandpaper longer, the image looks like it was painted onto the paper.

1.) MATH 6: Ch. 6 Unit Test tomorrow. Complete the 5 review questions.
MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) SCIENCE: Quiz tomorrow on the Particle Model of Matter (4 Key Points) and the different states of matter. It will be based on your group's collaborative-research notes on Google Drive. Pay attention to all the terms and processes. You will have to describe matter in terms of their volume, mass, shape, and particles.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

How have you become a better learner this year?
What skills have you learned this year that you think will help you in the future?
How do you feel about learning intentions, self/peer assessment and feedback, asking good quality questions, and reflections? How do all of these things help you learn?

I think I have become a better learner this year. Some skills that I think will help me in the future is all the different types of technology skills. For example, we learned how to use weebly, Prezi, and more! We also learned how to use different devices like iPads. I think research skills will help me in the future as well. The reason why is that I think anytime we need to write an assignment for something, or we want to learn more about a topic we can research it. Although, with research skills comes reliability so we know we won't be fed incorrect information. I really like learning intentions because it acts as a goal as to what I should learn by the end of the unit. Additionally, having those learning intentions is like a guideline. By the end of the unit, I would check if I knew all the learning intentions. Feedback, peer/self assessment, and asking good quality questions helps me learn by many different ways. To begin with, feedback helps me reflect on my learning and see the areas I had errors on that I can improve. Peer/self assessment helps me give my opinion on areas I should work harder on. Also, they help me improve my learning because I try harder the next time. Finally, asking good quality questions helps me illustrate my understanding better if for example I am engaged in my learning. Asking different deep thinking questions helps me think harder to figure out the answer would be. It also helps me learn by requiring me to research more about my learning, so it would deepen my understanding more.

@ Li0 - How has giving quality feedback to your peers and receiving the same feedback helped you learn? Can you give some examples from your learning? Did you learn how to find reliable sources? Did you improve your critical thinking skills this year?

To start off, I learned a lot of things this year. One thing I learned to do that was fun was doing the stocks for math. The stocks were hard to keep up with, but fun to do. We also learned a lot about Google Spreadsheets and some formulas. Like =sum(J8*I7) is a formula. This will help me in the future if I decide to be an accountant or a money counter guy. Or if I need an organized chart. The second thing I liked learning was the digital art with Pixlr. I liked doing the anime portrait thing and putting it into Pixlr. It was pretty hard at first, but now I get it. This could help me in the future if I am a computer artist or just an artist. Thirdly, I learned how to give good, quality - full feedback to my piers. I learned that asking deep questions while doing this is good. To give a quality response, make sure that you do not have more than enough doggy biscuits. What I mean by that is, telling them like "I love where you said blah, your paragraph was perfect, the capitals are very good too." You are not helping them learn, but just making them think that their work is perfect and does not need any more edits. Fourthly, I learned how to find reliable sources. We used this in making our science projects. This will help me when I am grown up because it will help me what sites to trust and not to. Fifthly, I learned how to think more critically and more creatively, what I mean by that is asking more deep questions, thinking of weird answers do a question, or looking at a math problem differently than other classmates. I learned a lot in the first half of the year, but I hope I learn more in the next half of the year~!

I have definitely become a better learner this year. I thought this last year too, but this year has been such a big improvement. I have become a better learner by, taking ownership to ask my classmates about something on the class website. Also, I could email a friend on Gmail. Another way, is my collaborating with other peers to see their opinion about a topic. For example, if we had to research about something new. We could create a Google Document and share all of our ideas. I think that the biggest skill that I have learned this year is, technology skills. This will be helpful in the future by so many ways. For example, many adults that I have met, don't a great knowledge with technology, and I bet it's not the easiest thing to learn about after. So this could help with a job I may do in the future, if I have to work with technology. Also, when I go to high school or university. You have to do many presentations, so there are many tools that I have learned in class this year and last year, (I was in Mr.Hong's class both years) that I could use. For example, Prezi, Powerpoint, Google Presentation, Animoto, and many more. Another skill that I learned this year is research skills and finding reliable sources. We learned how to use the C.R.A.A.P test. This has really helped me in my learning. From past years, when I do research on a topic, I would never know if the information is true or not. Now that I have a better understanding I can tell right a way what websites are reliable, whether it is looking at the information, the URL, or doing the C.R.A.A.P test. Over the past two years, I have also learned about digital citizenship, and how to use technology the appropriate way and safely. There are so many other skills that I have learned but to rap up this response, I have also learned a lot about questioning with Ms.Fei. About open ended and close ended questions. This skill will help me in life if I am in a situation where I am debating or persuading. Learning Intentions has helped me learn because, I know what I am learning about so that way I can have a better understanding. Peer assessments help me learn, by seeing another persons perspective of something so you could improve on whatever your doing. Learning is so fun!

I think that I have become a better learner this year. I think that these skills will help me in the future like technology skills, Animoto, weebly and many other technology things. We already have some great devices that we can use like a iPad, and a iPod I think that these devices help are learning because we have easy access to them and no madder were you are then you can do your homework. I think that feedback is great because when you give yourself feedback you think that theres nothing to improve on but when you give it to somebody else like your friend, then they can give you great feedback and you can see what you did wrong. I think that self/peer assessment is also, a great thing because then you can give your self some feedback and a partner can also, because when you give yourself your own assesment and you check with your pencil all the yeses then its hard to look over your work but when you do it with a partner they can say no and yes and all that and you can ask them why they put that and improve in your work. These help me learn by seeing on how I can improve in my work. :)

I have definitely become a better learner this year. We have learned so many different things like the five kingdoms, digital art, percentages, fractions, ratios, pop art, how to research with reliable resources, volleyball, basketball, soon inline skating, lots of phrase de la semaines, child labor, all about chinese new year (year of the snake projects), acting in the play, working in partners, the C.R.A.A.P. test, how to walk up a bunch of steps repeatedly (grouse grind), how to skate, how to make a video using animoto, all about the three states of matter and many more things. While learning all about these things it not only makes me learn everything that Mr. Hong's teaching me, it also teaches me how to learn, which makes me a better learner.

Feedback is an amazing thing. Sometimes you think that your work is perfect, but there might be a more experienced person who has feedback for you to make your work that much better. Some people think that feedback is a way people can boss them around, but you shouldn't think that way. Feedback is only a way to give CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, so that your work can be better.

Learning how to get reliable resources is an important thing to learn about. In almost every job you'll need to search something up, and you'll need to know if your information is reliable. Websites like wiki answers and answers.com are up to you to believe. Different people give different information, so you don't know which one is right. So it's important to know which websites are reliable.

1 I became a better learner this year because I can write paragraphs as introduction or body of the story or conclusions. I understand different writing techniques like transitory verbs.
2 I have learned how to judge good or poor websites. I think that learning in and outside school hours work well, especially the homework on the website.
3 When I know the learning intention, it feels like there is a goal to reach for. I really like getting feedback from peers because it is better than just a number. I like giving feedback, because other people's thoughts give me new ideas in return. Good quality questions help me expand my understanding. I always try my best to also ask good quality questions.

I think I have become a better learner because I can learn off the Internet with our mobile devices and the iPads and the computers. The skills that I have learned is that to research really good, to find reliable websites for a project perhaps. The peer assessments and the learning intentions and reflections help me learn more because your getting more information that you may not know from your peers and feedback.

I have become a better learner this year by taking ownership of my learning and being a better learner. I think the skills that will help me is weekly because I then can make a website for my job/career then I can also use animoto to make video's like we did making a passion's video I can do that. And one more thing that can help me is the blogging B.R.G.R.R.R by looking back at my work editing and revising then for others giving feedback. They help me learn by seeing what my opinion is and other people's opinion is on my and there work also giving feedback is one thing I like because you can tell someone that they need to fix something then they can just rewrite what your feedback was to up on there learning, quality questions help by getting someone to really think and also to really go deep into what the question is just like a saying a question like "how do you make candy?" that is a good deep thinking question to ask someone and have them wonder how to make candy. My reflections help me by telling other people what you think you did good on and what you need to improve on also it will tell you what you liked about it and what was your favorite and not favorite thing about what ever you did.

I think that I have been a better this year. I learned plenty of new things. Also I have learned more. For example, Animoto, open ended/close ended questions, 2013 snake, the 5 kingdoms, and more! The skills that I learned this year will help me plenty in the future. For example, with digital skills, I can be an architect, artist, a carpenter, website creator, photographer, and plenty of different jobs! The reason is because I know how to edit, and make things off of the computer. The learning intentions help me a lot because it teaches me how to follow instructions. Self and peer assessments help plenty too because you get two times the feedback. Reflections help because you get to think back on what you learned, what you did like, and what you didn't like.

I have learned a lot so far because I have increased my technology level and I have learned a lot about the Chinese lunar calendar! I have learned how to use a blog and also how to make borax crystals. Some skills that will help are a graphical designing and learning how to use a lot of things. They can help you learn because you can see what you can fix and you can do a self-assessment then a peer-assessment and compare them.

Firstly, I think I have become a better learner by setting my new year's resolution goal and my new year's resolution goal is to try to get strait A's and for me getting strait A's is pretty hard. On my first report card or progress report I got 3 A's and the rest B's. Also, I have been more engaged by listening better, trying harder and always checking my work over twice and I think all the motivation came from my new year's resolution. Another big part of it is the peer feedback. Feedback is very important because it helps you improve your work because if you look at your own work you might think "It sucks" or "It rocks!" then you get someone else to look at it and then you have a lot of good suggestions to improve your writing of what ever you are working on. Lastly, the blogging B.R.G.R.R.R. is the same as feedback but you do it in a blog and it has the step clearly shown. Secondly, I think that every skill that I have learned will help me in the future like: research skills, Google drive, power point, presentation and the C.R.A.A.P. test will help me if I need to get information from the internet. You can not just pick any old link in Google the website needs to go through the C.R.A.A.P. test to make sure the information is right and not wrong. How i think i have improved. Well firstly, i think i have become a better learner by being able to use technology more before i did use a lot of it but now i use it a ton before i did not use or know what Google drive was. I have improved on that bye being able to take notes easier then i would on paper and it makes writing a lot more fun! it is actually helping me bye staying organized and personally i rather type it then write it on paper. Also, getting feedback i think feedback helps me to know what i need to improve on for example in my new years essay i had grammar, spelling and a lot more mistakes that i would have not noticed myself. I think receiving and giving feedback has affected my grade in a good way because it help me improve on my work. And when it comes to me doing project i think i have also improved on that because at the beginning of the year i did not know how to tell is a website was reliable or not or what is good or not needed information, but know i do. This is some of the things that i think i have improved on over this year. :)

This year I think I have become a way better learner for many reasons. But mostly because of the electronics I really like using the electronics you can get you work done faster and search up stuff to help you with homework or what ever you need help with. Skills that I have learned this year that can help me later on in life. One of the things would be to calculate scores into a percentage. Another thing would be human rights I did not clearly know what human rights were but now I clearly understand them. Well self and peer and asking questions have helped me a lot because in this class if I ask a question I will get a awenser or we will research it and find the awenser so I can improve what ever I need to improve.

I think I have become a better learner this year because of all the technology we get to use, and what we learn for example, google drive, Animoto, or even stocks. Google drive really helps me because you can work off of it anywhere and anytime. For example if i'm in the car, I can use my mom's iphone to do homework. Google drive is also very organized. So, instead of using a USB cord you can just use google drive and it stores everything. I think stocks were really help full because now I know how to organize things on a spreadsheet and I know the formula's(=sum(K13*E4). I think giving/getting feedback is very important because we can find out what we need to improve on and make it better. Feedback is help full because you and you peer can help each other learn. I think Google drive will be help full in the future because if I wanted to work with business, then I would be able to organize things in google drive and spreadsheets.

This year I could improve my learning by tryig to pay more attention. Sometimes I can get distracted and talk to my friends when i'm not supposed to be. So to improve my learning I could make sure I pay more attention. One thing i've learned this year that will help me is learning about the stalk market. This will help me because when i'm older and want to make more money I will know how to buy shares of stocks and if I pick the right companies I could make a lot of money. I like peer feedback because the person giving you the feedback can tell you exactly what to change so it helps beause it le's you know what you could improve on or what you need to fix.

I have become a better learner by using my phone to complete homework from anywhere.
The skills that I have learned is how to create a essay which will help me in high school and when I am an adult with a job. Also one more thing that will help me is learning how to use technology to better my understanding of certain things such as looking for universities getting info on the job I would like to do and tutorials for hair, cooking and designing.
I feel that asking questions getting/making feedback can better my learning. I think this because if I have my teacher proof read my work that is one person but if I ask my class mates to give me feedback that would be about 27 unique suggestions.
All of these things help me learn by showing me new ways to represent my work.

This year I have definitely improved my learning because goal setting with our new years resolutions and also because of technology that has been involved in my learning from prezi to google drive. This year I have also improved because all the work we have a class website and the work that we are supposed to do and it is open to me were ever and when ever. I have also improved because most of the work we do is on google drive and if it,s a research project we can just search up the topic on the internet.

I have learned creativity skills. I think more outside the box in how I ask questions because of the lesson we got on open ended and closed ended questions by Ms Fei our student teacher. I have also improved my organization skills because of how we have to organize the info that we gather by doing research on certain topics and also because of the prezi I did on the five kingdoms. My research skills have also improved because from doing the C.R.A.A.P test in grade 6 I clearly get it and I can tel which website is reliable.

I personally find learning intentions to be very helpful in learning because it gives you the required work needed to pass certain units in any subject. Feedback is also good because usually if you read over your own work you think it's flawless but if someone else reads it and gives you feedback you see the errors and you fix them. Asking questions helps you understand more of what you are doing and it shows enthusiasm.

This year I have become a better learner because I tried new ways for me to learn, though they seem simple they are quite helpful. I have improved on learning so much more then I would have, this year had the most learning in my opinion. There are still things I could improve on but trying harder wouldn't hurt. I will try to study more often because studying helps keep flow and motivation when learning because you might just freeze because of boredom by being lazy and not doing anything. In my mind, I have loved the past months on using these techniques but I think we could pull off something bigger like us watching an election and ask everyone a detail about it.

This year i have become a better learner because I was taught how to make art with all sorts of different materials. Also I have been taught how to create my very own website (which could help me a lot through the next years), have learned how to colaborate with others. I think asking questions could help me learn in the future because it is good to get more people's opinions on your work.

Anouther is google drive, I had no idea it existed untill we started using it, it could help in the future if I become a banke person because it would help keep the banke numbers in order. I think I have become a better learner just overall, sure I'm not great with getting things on time but that doesn't really matter to me, as long as I'm learning I don't think little numbers and letters define how well I can learn. I think drawing will really help me, before I was really uncomfortable using a computer to draw, but now I have my own tablet and use it mostly everyday. I'm sorry but really I could care less about learning intentions and peer assessments, they don't really do anything for me but I do them only because we have to, I enjoy doing things alone and not with the help of other people, as for the other things I say the same.
