Monday: Global Read Aloud - "I am the one and only Ivan!"

Today, all 12 classes gathered in the gym to prepare our video presentation for the Global Read Aloud (The One and Only Ivan). We are all working hard to put together a video for our school so that Katherine Applegate will choose our school to Skype with. We are building on the 4 C's of 21st Century Learning: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity/Innovation, and Critical thinking skills!

1.) MATH 6 - Any assigned work and watch the Equivalent Fractions video.
MATH 7 - Watch this video clip on Equivalent Fractions

2.) LA - Post your responses only after you have revised your work according to the feedback you received from your peers. Refer to your Language Arts notebooks. Also, save a copy of your response to your Google Drive folder and title it 'GRA - Responses # 9 - Your name'.

A.) Why does Ivan promise Stella that he will take care of Ruby when he knows how hard it will be to keep that promise?
B.) How does Ivan know that Stella is gone before anyone else does?

Firstly, I think that Ivan had promised Stella to take good care of Ruby even though it's going to be tough because he wants Stella to feel good and make Stella think that Ivan is a good and trustworthy guy. He also wants Stella to feel happy before her death. No one wants to pass away with a broken heart. Secondly, the next day Ivan is the first one to notice that Stella is gone. Why is that ? It can be? Maybe because Stella asked Ivan to take care of Ruby, if she we're still going to live she wouldn't ask for that. Or maybe Ivan and Stella have such a strong friendship that Ivan can sense her death coming near. Finally, Ivan is heartbroken and says, "Right now I would give all the raisins in all the world for a heart made of ice." It means he wants a true Silverback's heart, one that doesn't care about anything, just protecting.

@ Lio - You gave some very good supporting details in your responses. See if you can use different types of transition words next time just to mix it up a little bit. For example, 'In addition to....' or 'Not only did he....'

Ivan knows that Stella is going to pass away because Stella told him to keep a promise so I think that he knows that Stella will pass away even tho he cannot behind metal bars. He will still try his best to take care of Ruby tho.

B)
Ivan knew that Stella was going to pass away before everyone because Stella told him to take care of Ruby. So that kind of tells him that she will pass away soon.

1.)Ivan promises Stella that because Ivan knowshis duty as a sliverback is to protect and he would think that "It would be easier to stop eating, to stop breathing, to stop being a gorilla' I think Ivan has said that because Ruby is in a different domain.

2.)I thinkIvan knows Stellas going to pass away before anyone else because Ivan and Stella have been friends for along time so Ivan knows when its her last words. Also, it kind of gives it away because she told Ivan that promis.

I think that Ivan promised Stella to protect Ruby because he wanted give Stella peace as she is going, and also he wanted to feel and act like a silverback. The reason I came up with this reason was because the last thing he said to Stella was. "I promise it on my word as a silverback."

I think Ivan knew Stella was going because of the infected leg, the promise to protect Ruby, and the in dull voice.

A) He promised that he would because he wanted Stella to feel good and to have a good thought when she died.Ivan knows that it will be tough and hard but he will do it because he promised Stella that he would.

B) He knows that Stella is gone because she asked if he would take care of Ruddy. He is going to try to protect her from the humans and aspeshaly make.

In my opinion, I think that Ivan promised Stella that he will take care of Ruby even though he know it will be hard is because he can finally become a silverback. Ivan has never really protected anybody as a silverback, and that is their job, so Ruby pretty much is a test. Also, another reason is because he knew, he knew that Stella is getting weak and will pass away soon. Stella made a joke once saying " gorilla's hearts are made of ice. " Meaning, he has no emotions, like a rock. And he said " Right now, I would give all the yogurt raisins ( which he really likes ) in the world for a heart of ice. " Which is saying, he wishes he was emotionless.

I think Ivan knew Stella was gone before everybody is because he probably knew that she was weak and isn't getting any better. After the many years they have been beside each other I'm sure he could tell sadly, she was going to pass.

The promise Ivan made was almost impossible but Ivan doesn't care because protecting Ruby was Stella's last will which determines Ivan to protect Ruby. I really think Ivan was determined because Ivan thought to himself "Right now I would give all the yogurt covered raisins in the world for a heart made of ice." which shows that Ivan cares. When Stella died, he knew first, I think that he knew because Stella asked Ivan to protect Ruby, no one would tell Ivan that unless something will happen. In all thought, Ivan was almost human in emotion, that shows that Ivan can be hurt.

I think that Ivan promised Stella that he will take care of Ruby, for two reasons. Firstly, I think Ivan only promised Stella that so she would die happy. He was her best friend and vice versa. They had been through so much, and if he cannot keep one promise, I don’t think he would feel very worthy to be Stellas best friend. It may have just been one promise, but it was a little more than that. It was also a test to their friendship. Secondly, I noticed that Ivan said, “I promise.” “I promise it on my word as a Silverback.” the day before Stella had passed. Not only do I think Ivan said that so Stella would believe it, but so he can believe it as well.

I think that Ivan knew Stella was gone first out of everyone, from their previous day’s chat. There were many promises being made, and a ton of emotions being felt. Also, I think they have created such a strong bond that they can basically sense each other. And they may have been in different domains, but they were always like two peas in a pod.

firstly i think ivan was the first one to know stella was gone because i think ivan was watching stella until she did and secondly the reason why ivan promesed stella that he would take care of ruby was because then she wouldent be so worried about her passing even though ivan thought it would be almost im possible since they are in opposite cages (or domains like they like to call it.)

I think that Ivan said yes to keeping Ruby safe to make Stella happy. I think Ivan knew that Stella was gone first because she told Ivan to protect ruby. In the story Ivan has changed a bit ...

In my opinion Ivan promised Stella that he will protect/take care of Ruby because Ivan got all of the hints that Stella was going to pass away and so Ivan wanted Stella to pass away knowing Ruby is in good hands. but when Ivan knew Stella was going to pass away Ivan didn't want to feel the pain of having to lose someone so close so Ivan said "I would give all the yogurt raisins in all the world for a heart made of ice".

Firstly, I think that Ivan told Stella that he could take care of Ruby because he wanted Stella to die happy and for Ruby to not go through what Stella went through. Example say my granadma or grandpa were dieing and they asked me to take care of something I would say yes because then there not worried, even though I know that I couldn't take care of it. Because Ivan and Stella were best friends and if they are bestfriends then Ivan has to keep Stellas promise they have been through so much together. Also Ivan said this ''I promise in my word as a Silverback".

I think that Ivan knew that Stella was passing away before anyone else because I think Ivan could sense the fear from Stella becuase animals can sense some fear so maybe Stella was afraid of passing away and never seeing Ivan or Ruby again.

Ivan wanted to protect someone so, I guess he had no choice but to protect Ruby. But Ivan knew it was going to be hard to protect Stella because he said " it would be easier to stop eating, stop breathing, to stop being a gorilla." Ivan had to promise Stella because Stella told him that she wanted Ruby to have a better life then hers.

First of all Ivan knows that Stella is gone before anyone else because, Stella told Ivan those words and he knew she would be gone soon... Secondly, he knew she was old and had an ankle that was swelling up. I think Ivan could kind of tell when Stella died because they were so connected and close as friends, he could just sense it.

I know that Ivan promised these things (above) because he said "I promise Stella, I promise on my word as a silver back."

a) I think Ivan promised to Stella that he would protect Ruby even though he was thinking it would be next to impossible if not impossible because he wanted Stella to die happy and not sad. He even said " it would be easier to stop eating. To stop breathing. To stop being a gorilla."
b) I think Ivan knows Stella is gone before anyone else because they were talking the night before and Stella said she had never asked a promise before and I think she asked Ivan to promise to protect Ruby because she knew she was dying and Ivan was able to sense she was going to die very soon. So thats how I think he knew she had passed away.

I think that since Ivan can sense how people are feeling he probably knows when someone is dieing or is healthier than ever.

2) Ivan knew that Stella was passing away because of how Stella told him to take care of ruby for him.

In my opinion, I think Ivan promises Stella that he will take care of Ruby, because it seems like he had no other choice. Ivan was kind of put on the spot. Also because Stella has always been there for Ivan like a mother, so I think Ivan said yes to that promise as a thank you. There are so many reasons why Ivan said yes to that promise, another reason might be, because Ivan was taken away from his own family and for all those years he couldn't protect anyone. So now that Ivan can see Stella has come of old age and can't take care of Ruby anymore, it's he's chance to have that opportunity.

Firstly, the reason why Ivan already knew that Stella was gone before anyone else was because, Ivan had that connection with Stella. Stella was literally like a mother to Ivan. So Ivan can tell everything that is going on with Stella because they are best friends. Lastly, I think when Stella called Ivan randomly just to ask if he can take care of Ruby, Ivan probably got to know that Stella knows she is going to die, and so do I now.

ivan promised Stella that he would take care of ruby when Stella passes away because ivan and Stella have been friends for 27 years. ivan probably wanted to make Stella happy and take on the responsibility of taking care of ruby and being a true silverback gorilla.

1.) Ivan promised her because it was her dying wish, and the fact that she was in so much pain that she could barley speak made him feel something, so thats why he agreed to make Ruby a better life

2.) Because of the strong connection they formed over the years, and the fact that the day she died, the sky went foggy so you could't see the moon.
