Railroad Routs

Today, we focused on math in order to prepare for the unit test on Friday. Students did some basic algebra using 3 common formulas to calculate the base, amount, or percentage depending on what numbers are given in a specific question. We will dive deeper into algebra at the end of the school year. Students also continued learning about ratios/proportions in ADST. They also learned more about the underground railroad and are working on a writing activity on it.

Pax Journey Home. Out of the countless books in the world, this story contains one of my favourite Big Ideas. Pax the fox, and Peter, a boy, share a special relationship. Both their lives are going over a rough patch in the road, and they need each other once again. I think that the Big Idea of this story is that you need support and love to live a full life. As you see Peter grow throughout the story, you see how he opens up, and is happier as he does it. After he was orphaned, he thought that living alone for the rest of his life would protect him, but Pax's pup, Sliver, finds her way in and Peter finds a companion once again. Once he does, his life brightens, and his narrative expresses the pure joy that he feels. I feel that the author wanted to send this message to the world because she felt that others needed to at least get an idea of what they wanted and needed, so she could help them if they ever needed it. I connect this Big Idea to the movie Shang-Chi, when Shang-Chi's dad becomes his father. I connect this because, in the beginning, it said that his dad had conquered cities, and overthrown empires, but he longed for more, until he found his wife, and he no longer felt the need to do such things. Ultimately, finding one's needs can help to improve the lives of others around them.

SELF ASSESSMENT: I could be more concise in my explanation so it is less like a summary.

Pax Journey Home. Out of the countless books in the world, this story contains one of my favourite Big Ideas. Peter, a tween orphan, begins to shut out the world when everyone he loves disappears. But, when both Pax, a fox, and Peter realize that they need each other once again. Finally, when Peter opens up to others, he sees how much of a difference it makes. In the end, Peter opens up to his caretaker, Vola, and claims that Pax's pup, Sliver, was just what he needed. I feel that the author wanted to send this message to the world because she felt that others needed to at least get an idea of what they wanted and needed, so she could help them if they ever needed it. I connect this Big Idea to the movie Shang-Chi, when Shang-Chi's dad becomes his father. I connect this to the Big Idea because in the beginning of the movie, it said that his dad had conquered cities, and overthrown empires, but he longed for more, until he found his wife, and he no longer felt the need to do such things. I think the big idea is when you try really hard and set your mind to something you can always achieve it. If you never try you will never know what you might accomplish.
And also there will be hard times in life but you can always do some to earn it back.
I think that is the big idea of the story.

How would you have felt if you went to a school far away from your home? A school that was designed to strip your culture and identity away so you could follow their rules.
That's what happened to 8 year old Olemaun who was eager to go to residential school, Then she got mistreated by nuns and other students. The intention of the book was to educate people about what happened in residential schools a few decades ago, A text to world connection I can make is about what happened a few months ago with the residential school situation and how they found unmarked graves in the Kamloops residential school.
However, I interpreted the big idea is that as long as you try hard and apply yourself, you can accomplish what you want to, Like Olemaun did when she learned to read English even in such a harsh and toxic environment. The text evidence of this is when Olemaun "opened the book....I looked at the words and began slowly, twisting my tongue around the consonants and forming my mouth around vowels. By the second paragraph I confidently sliced through the words without a single moment of hesitation". This shows that Olemaun persevered and had improved from knowing little English to knowing how to slowly read a book.

This book is about a boy called Percy Jackson. Percy went to different schools because each school he goes to something always goes wrong. Percy has dyslexia so he can't read words properly. What he doesn't know is that the strange things that happen, happen because of him. Percy Jackson is the son of the sea god Poseidon. Therefore, he attracts monsters to the school. He finds out his principle is a centaur and takes him to a camp called Camp
Half-blood. This camp is for people who are sons or daughters of gods. Percy makes some friends with a daughter of Athena and a Satyr. Together, they defeat a titan named Kronos and stop the world from being destroyed. That is a quick summary of Percy Jackson.

This book is called warriors into the wild, it's about a group of cat clans fighting other clans such as dog clans because I saw a cat fighting a dog on the front cover.

I think the big idea of warriors into the wild is about being part of the thunder clan as the main character wanted to become a high ranked warrior in the Thunder clan. In the passage it said that he always had a dream of becoming a high ranked warrior and it became true. I think he though it was easy to become a high ranked warrior in the Thunder clan but in reality it takes lots of training to become a high ranked warrior.

My perspective on this is that I think the Thunder clan might be the strongest because the other allied clans are also cat clans but on the map (first page) the training camp of the thunder clan was big so this was why I think he wanted to join the Thunder clan instead of the other clans.

That was a quick summary of Warriors into the wild by Erin Hunter.

The Hobbit. Of the many books I have read this school year, The Hobbit is one of the most engaging books of them all. This classic fantasy centers on a hobbit named Bilbo, who one day finds himself going on a perilous journey to reclaim the treasure up in the Mountains that was once stolen by the menacing dragon, Smaug. I think the big idea of this book is taking risks and bravery. At the beginning of the story, Bilbo was a normal, mellow hobbit who had never journeyed out of Bag End, where he lived. However, after taking the risk of getting killed by Smaug and other hindrances (such as the goblins) in return for a chance to earn what was once his companions’, Bilbo found himself learning many new things about nature and ending up rich of treasure. If Bilbo had not found the bravery within him, the mission would have never succeeded, and all thirteen of his crew would have been dead. One connection I made to this was to another book called Divergent. In this book, a girl called Tris started out to be a normal girl joining Dauntless, one of the four groups one had to join when they turn sixteen. There, she faced harsh training and constant punishment. However, over time, Tris learned to stand up for herself and change what she thought needed to be changed. From this bravery, she contributed to her society as a whole and changed it into a better place. I connected to this because both books show the benefits of bravery and how it can change one’s whole life. What books have you recently read that have a meaningful big idea?

Frindle. This book is about a boy who created another name for pen, frindle. I think the big idea of the book is use your determination to get what you want. In the story, his English teacher brought a dictionary into a class and told the students 'ain't' isn't a word. When Nick was punish to write 'pen' 100 times, he wrote 80 times frindle instead of pen. It reminded me of Olemaun, how she fought against the nuns. This is the big idea I thought of.

There’s this book I have read about called Keeper of the Lost Cities. I think the big idea of this book is about how Sophie Foster saved everyone from great danger with her friends. Sophie Foster is half human and half elf. She has human parents and elves parents who adopted her. She figured out that she was created by the Black Swan. She has 5 special abilities to help her. They are telepath, enhancing, teleporting, inflicting, and polyglot. Not a lot of elves have that many abilities. She first thought that Black Swan was the bad guys. Then when the Black Swan and Sophie met, the Black Swan saved her from the human abilities. The second time they met, the Black Swan healed her abilities, and Ophir figured they are no the bad guys. Afterwards, they met the Neverseen. They have leaders, and one of them is Gisela, Keefe Scencen’s mum. Keefe is Gisela’s son and Keefe’s dad was as bad, too. Keefe had a sad life, but he was still one of Sophie’s closest friends even though he betrayed her two times by going to the Neverseen. The Neverseen created lots of trouble in both the human cities and in the lost cities. Sophie saved a lot of people who was going to get hurt by the Neverseen with her friend. This is why I think that the big idea is about Sophie Foster saved everyone from great danger with her friends.

The novel Four: A Divergent Collection is part of the Divergent series. For those haven't read this collection before, here's a quick summary. Essentially, the characters in this book live in a city that's divided into five factions: Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Dauntless, and Candor. Within the Abnegation community (the selfless), a boy named Tobias "Four" Eaton has parent phobia (a fear of his father). His constant fear stems from his experiences of his father threatened and harnessing him throughout his lifetime. When he turned thirteen, Tobias was finally able to escape from his hypocritical father by transferring to the Dauntless faction (the brave). Once there, he was able to make his own decisions and chose his own paths in life ,which later included saving the city. I think the Big Idea of Four is that everyone shouldn't be influenced and "put down" by others in their lives. To illustrate, Tobias transferred to another fraction during the Closing Ceremony despite his father's demands, demonstrating his bravery and ability to make his own decisions. Besides his dad, members of Dauntless also continued to doubt and tease "Four", specifically another transfer named Eric. Once again, he showed that he wasn't influenced by this and ended up becoming on of the bravest Dauntless in history. Although I read this novel before our class started book club discussions, I made a connection to When I Was Eight while I was writing this PAR. To illustarte, Tobias didn't have the same motives as many of the Abnegations. Similarly, Olemaun also didn't fit in with others at the school, but still showed courage like Tobias. Some think books are just created for entertainment, but they're also ways for authors to express messages to the world. That's what makes books so important.

Racism. This may trigger the thoughts of many people. In the story Blended, Isabella and her friends are treated unfairly just because they are black. In this book, it talks about racism, personal empowerment, police brutality, and activism. In addition, this novel focuses on a girl's struggle to find her identity amid her parents' divorce and personal problems. As an 11 year old girl, Isabella has to divide her life between her white mother and black father. I think the big idea of this book is that your appearance and the colour of your skin does not define you in any kind of way. In the story, Isabella faces racism in many different ways, and feels like she doesn't fit in. In addition, I also think the big idea is on identity development. In the beginning of the story, Isabella doesn't know where she stands in her community, whether she's considered white, or black. Through her parents' divorce, Isabella considers the question, "Who am I?". As she continues to live her complicated life, she comes to realize who she really is and begins to have to her own thoughts and feelings. In the end, she finally identifies her true self through her blended family. A connection I made to this story was another story called Front Desk. This novel talked about racism, family issues, and social justice as well. In this book, Mia faces discrimination because of the colour of her skin and her race. Mia and her family were considered the ousiders of America, as they only just immigrated there. I connected Isabella with Mia since they had similar experiences such as racism, bullying, and difficult family situations. Firstly I think the big idea of the story is to show what the indigenous people had to go through in this time and what they would do to you in these schools. secondly I think the author is trying to show us that no one deserves to be treated like this and we should think on that because it doesn’t seem as bad as it is, all we see are the people going to these schools getting discriminated against but it is so much more then that indigenous people would have to do chores all day and if they didn’t they would be beat severely punished for no reason. Now you know the big idea of this story .

Orphan Island. A wondrous book, wise and wild and deeply true. I think the big idea of this book is to remind us that we have a responsibility in this world and where every we are, we should care for others and yourself. This book is about a girl called Jinny taking care of her orphan friends. Every while, a new orphan arrives and the eldest leaves. Jinny was the Eldest and the newest orphan had just arrived which means she had a big responsibility of taking care of her. Next time, Jinny doesn't wanna leave and there is a myth where if the next eldest doesn't leave, the world would flip upside down. In the end, Jinny decides to leave and takes responsibility of what she had done and the rules she had broken. This connects to one of the big 6 learning principals where you take ownership. Responsibility of your actions.

"a good girl's guide to murder" (the title is purposely not capitalized) is one of my favourite books that I've read this year. Not only is the writing fantastic, but I think that it has a good big idea. I think that the big idea of a good girl's guide to murder is that without clear evidence, we should never strongly judge and assume things. The main plot of the story is that Pip (the main character) investigates a murder of someone in her neighbourhood. While everyone is 100% sure the victim's boyfriend killed her and then took his life out of guilt, she isn't sure. The main reason she goes into this investigation is because there was no proof or evidence that Sal (the boyfriend) killed Andie (victim), which relates to my big idea. In the end and throughout the book, she uncovers that it wasn't actually Sal, and so this goes to show that you shouldn't judge and assume things without any proof. I connected this to the Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito case. In this case, Gabby was missing, and her remains were found. Everyone assumed that it was Brian, Gabby's boyfriend, but to this day, there is still no proof that it was Brian. Unfortunately, Brian's remains were found after a long search. Everyone assumed that he took his life, but there is no evidence. Not only does this case connect a lot to the storyline, but it shows that many people assume things, even when there is no evidence or proof. In conclusion, it's important that we don't assumed and judge things without evidence, because sometimes it ends with a bad outcome.

A novel I read recently was called Restart. This book mainly talks about a kid name chase fell of a roof and had to stay in a coma for weeks, when he woke up, he had amnesia. After he start to go back to school, he realizes kids at school were afraid of him, and people in town gives him dirty looks, soon later, he realizes he himself, was a bully and owns the worst reputation in town. He has a chance to change himself to be a good perdon or is he going to become what he used to be. I think that the big idea of this novel is trying to tell us that everyone has a chance to change yourself, no matter who you are. In conclusion, this book is a book that I really enjoyed, I also like the message that this book is giving us.

A book I have read pretty recently was the third book of the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series (The Ship of the Dead). To summarize the main plot of the book, Magnus and his friends have to stop Loki's ship, Naglfar, from leaving the docks located between Niflheim and Jotunheim to delay Ragnarok as long as possible. If the ship leaves, they will start Ragnarok which is basically the end of the world with a war that the gods are destined to lose. Magnus learns that the only way to delay this is by beating Loki at a flyting. A flyting is when two people come up with clever insults to say at each other, similar to a rap battle. The loser should be hurt so badly that they feel like they are nothing and worthless. Magnus drinks a swig of Kvasir's Mead (which they stole), to help him become more poetic with his words. When he has the flyting with Loki, it seems he is losing, but then points out the good in all of his friends which makes Loki shrink until he is an inch tall. They capture him and take him to Odin where they find what to do with him. I think the Big Idea in the story is that you can combat negativity with positivity, and it will always win in the end. Evidence from the book is that in the flyting between Magnus and Loki, they are expected to both insult each other, but Magnus decides to bring people up rather than bring people down which somehow makes Loki shrink. This just proves that you cannot fight fire with fire. I can connect my Big Idea to the Bible where (I think) the main point of it is that positivity and love will always win. There are probably a bunch of other Big Ideas for this book, but I think the one I chose is one of the main ones.

A book that I have read in the past year is called The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. The main character of the book, Junior has a great personal ambition, he wants to become a cartoonist and earn money. He reasons that it's a way to help him escape the hopelessness of the Spokane Indian reservation. He decides to attend a high school that's off the reservation at Reardan. To the eyes of his community, it looks more like abandonment and betrayal. After he attended high school, he find himself struggling both to discover his identity and to relate back to the Spokane community. At Reardan, Junior gains a fresh perspective on the things that are bad about life on the reservation, hopelessness, and a lack of tolerance. But, with the help of friends and family, Junior is also able to relate his ambitions to his Indian heritage. As time goes on, Junior finds more things that he belongs to, like the Reardan basketball team. One of the main differences between the people at Reardan and the people on the reservation is that most of the families on the reservation at poor, including Junior's family. I think the big idea that the author is trying to tell us is that, the main thing that makes poverty different is that it prohibits people from trying to reach goals and pursuing hope and opportunity. You see, poor people don't really even have an opportunity to get rich, in our community, you can but in other cases chances are, you can't. for example, if you are born in a poor country where poverty is a thing, you don't have any way to get rich. I think that's the big idea that the author is trying to send to us.
