Novel Approach

Students have finished their novels! They are hard at work on their novel packages which includes their gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and their powerful responses. This is nothing new to them. They know the routine. We reviewed learning intentions and success criteria today to make sure the expectations are crystal clear. Students must submit all of their summative work on Friday to be evaluated.
IMPORTANT:
1.) DUE DATES:
- Narrative/Creative writing due on Monday
- Novel Approach due on Friday

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete pg. 92-93 in Jump Math 7.2

2.) READING: Read 30 min and log.

3.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Booklets should be finished now. Start your powerful responses.
Rubric and template for your Gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and powerful response can be accessed here.

4.) WRITING: Continue working on your stories. (Due Monday)

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you had your last book club before working on your powerful responses.
Watch this video before you do today's PAR!
Write a self-assessment in paragraph format using the following learning intentions (no criteria today).
LEARNING INTENTION:
- I can explore and express ideas, opinions, and perspectives about the big idea of the story.
- I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
- I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
For each of the learning intentions above, give an example of how you met it or how you didn't meet it.
Complete a self-assessment using the givens (Spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation). (Post as a reply to you original post).
Post a revised version.

Although our book club is very productive there are things we can work on. To be honest i would rate us a developing/applying since we really cant focus when we are together. Why? Because i keep humming amongus music and we probably gossip for 90% of the time! If we can change something about our productivity i would put people who are like strangers to eachother in a group so we get more work done.

I think I was able to do this, mostly, but because I finished the everything already, I stopped doing that and worked on my other book

Sometimes when we have conversations, it doesn't meet this, but there were a couple of times when we actually did have a conversation. Many times we don't have a conversation.

3). I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
I do do the thinking and learning questions, and we do talk about it, and sometimes it does change my thinking.

I think I was able to do this, mostly, but because I finished the everything already, I stopped doing that and worked on my other book. In other words, I did meet this intention, but probably not to the ideal extent.

2). I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
Sometimes when we have conversations, it doesn't meet this, but there were a couple of times when we actually did have a conversation. Many times the conversations are off topic. Basically, I didn't meet this learning intention.

- After expressing our opinions, I learnt more about the characters and began to develop more questions as I started to see them in a new light through my peers' perspecctives.

I think I was able to do this because I mostly finished the booklet. I filled in most of the spaces, but not the What I learned from others part.

2). I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
I don't think that we met this learning intention because most of the time, we're off-topic. Also, most of the people in my group didn't do what was supposed to be done. Sometimes, we did do this, but most of the time, we didn't.

3). I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
When we did the What I learned from others, we said what we thought and sometimes, it changed what I thought.

1.) I can explore and express ideas, opinions, and perspectives about the big idea of the story.
I think I was able to complete this by including my thoughts and opinions in my big idea and expressing these in my own words. I haven’t finished my powerful response but I would say I met the learning intention by stating the big idea, providing evidence, and adding personal connections.

2.) I can have a meaningful, purposeful, and respectful conversation with my peers.
There were definitely a few things our group needed to work on, such as focussing and staying on topic so we can finish our work faster than it was supposed to take (which includes me because I wasn’t super focussed either.) However, I would say that we collaborated with each other and learned new things from everyone’s perspective and got our work done at the end of the day. So I’d say we almost met the learning intention but with a bit more help on focussing.

3.) I can talk and learn from others by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peer’s ideas.
We shared our ideas and thoughts as we went around for the thinking and learning questions and for me, I would say that I learned something new from one of my peers almost every time. Overall, I would say I met the learning intention for this section.

We shared our thoughts and opinions about the book and it's big idea. We also shared our answers for the thinking and learning questions, and we had similar answers.
- I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
Our group had some debates and listened to each others thoughts but some of our conversations were off topic.
- I can talk and learn from others by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
I learned what my peers thought and what ideas they had about the book from the what I learned from others questions. Some of us had different ideas.

I have a idea of the big idea of the story, but I haven't got the what I learned from others and I am starting the PR.
- I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
Although most of my group members do the work up to date, but some of our group members are off topic and don't do what their supposed to do. Therefore, we haven't yet finished the "what I learned from others" from the "thinking and learning questions."
- I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
We did the what I learned from others question a little bit, and learned that some of us thought the same, but some of us also had different perspectives.

1) I can explore and express ideas, opinions, and perspectives about the big idea of the story.
- I haven't finished by Powerful Response yet but I looked through my work and found lots of proof that supports my big idea. I also identified many reading strategies I used to come up with my big idea to further support my point.

2) I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
- We didn't come across any disputes / arguments and had a lot of meaningful conversations from the book itself and the package, leading us to learn a lot of unique things we wouldn't have thought of ourselves. I think that we did meet the learning intention though sometimes we were off task and talking about other things.

3) I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
- I think that we did meet the learning intention. We were able to all share what we thought for the Thinking and Learning questions. Although sometimes we had the same overall idea and perspective on a question, each person brought a special twist to it and allowed us to still learn from one another.

Yes. Our group has been able to express their opinions through the thinking and learning questions. I would say it was very important to learn new perspectives, not only for the work but to be more openminded to others ideas.

I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.

We weren't able to have many deep conversations because we mainly focused on getting things done. I think next time we should do this as well so we can deepen our comprehension and be even more prepared for the powerful response. However, when we did talk about the book we were able to self regulate and if we ever got off topic we went back to working quickly.

I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.

My group asked questions about the book, which lead us to talk about what we each thought and sometimes our thinking changed from each others thoughts.

1) I don't think I met this learning intention yet since I don't have the big idea to Refugee yet, but I will definitely come up with an idea of it soon.
2) I think I met that learning intention. Although I may get off topic at times, mostly the group talks to each other in a good flow of information.
3) I think I met this learning intention. The GOW created an opportunity to talk about other's ideas of what they mean, and the T and L questions also created some creativity in the group.

And? That does not mean you don't do par. You can still do it without being at bookclubs today. Since this was our last day for these book bookclubs, there will be no further bookclub sessions for these books. So what I would reccomend is that you complete this for tommorow, not trying to be a male karen. I am just trying to help you out. Remember that this is the last term, completing par is very important. :)

Yes, I can share my opinions and feelings and ideas about the big idea to my peers.

Roy was trying to think of a big idea, so was our entire group. So, I took this chance and shared 3 different big ideas to different people to get an idea of a big idea for them to use. It was to help them deepen their understanding.

Most of the time, we had a meaningful and respective conversations where we let each of use to talk about the book without distractions any distractions. Sometimes we would slack off a little bit, but we were on track most of the time.

We mostly had one person to remind us to focus on our conversation, because all the time, we make connections to connections to connections, to the point where we talk about things that are not related to the book . . . at all. Though it was good to have someone remind us to stay on track. It would not just be one person; it is whoever wants to stand up and say it. It is always a different person every time it happens.

This question is a bit related to just overall doing the learning questions with your group, and yes, we did talk, learn, and reflect through each other's thoughts.

Whenever someone shares there thinking questions, someone always goes “oh yeah, I didn’t think of that,” They reflect on what they wrote and self-assess themselves.

Yes, our group can express our opinions and perspectives, we all learned a lot by sharing our perspectives, opinions and ideas.

I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.

Our group hasn’t done a lot of meaningful conversations but when we did we talked about our thinking and learning questions and our perspective of the story, it helped all of us learn more about the book.

I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.

Our group asked a lot of questions about the book and we learned more about the characters because of that.

After reading the book, I am able to write my Big Idea of this book with my own opinions and perspectives.

I think I met this pretty well - my PR meets all the points of the success criteria, and our group has had some pretty good discussions.

- I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
Most of the members of out group met this, however some people were not finished the (totally unreasonable) assignments when the rest of us were talking about the stuff we had read, so we half met this LI.

- I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
Again, most of out group met this LI, but we were the ones who had nothing else to do and just read the whole book in a day - other people were sometimes doing their unfinished work while we were talking.

I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers: I've talked with my peers about any parts I am curious about, we also have debated about other things in the book.

I can talk and learn from others by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas: While we looked at each others work to write down, I've come across some pieces of work that I believe are very true and very good. These pieces I remember and I will be thinking about it while I do my work.

I think I do really well sharing and expressing my opinions and ideas because a lot of the times during our book clubs we often talk about one topic and share our ideas about it.

I think this is something I can work better on. When we talk about a topic, if everyone has different thoughts about it, we would talk over and over again which sometimes might lead into a small argument.
- I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
When we all share our ideas, if the conversation goes smoothly I can learn many things from my peers. If I share one opinion and someone disagrees and gives their point, I might like their opinions and learn from them.

I think that when we discussed in our groups, we did talk about what we thought of certain parts of the book. The other day, we were talking about the Big Idea of the story. We all had a different Big Idea, and we all explained why we thought what we thought.

When we talked, it wasn't super meaningful. Or completely respectful. When we talked about the book, it was mostly just agreeing with what others said. We mostly said the same things but in different words. Most of the time, it was Tyson sharing, we told him he had used too many words. Then someone else would share, and we would have said the same thing in different words.

We did not do this at all. Well we did once. When Roy noticed that Spoon Guy behaved similarly to a p... never mind. It's not really appropriate so I won't say it. Annika, Jacqueline and I were discussing his... perception of Spoon Guy. We asked each other about certain parts of that chapter, and we found ways that made Roy's perception make sense.

I was able to read through the book and find useful information that I used in my T&L questions and gift of words, I also was able to express my opinions, ideas, and perspectives with some trouble but overall I did manage to do it.

2. - I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
I was able to have a good conversation, we all shared what we had to share with each other and sometimes had weird answers.

3. - I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peer's ideas.
we did agree with each others ideas and opinions that were relevant to some of the characters actions (like the spoon guy and shiny head person).

I was behind with my N.A. work to be honest but I could clearly tell that my group was not collaborating

That again is something that ME and my group did not do much of. All of us are at flout for not collaborating...

Again my group didn't collaborate at all, we were spread apart...
