Today, you all started working on your powerful responses for your picture books. Some of you are well on your way to completing your first draft. Expect to receive feedback on your draft this evening. Your homework tonight will be to complete your first draft according to the criteria you received in class today. If you have any questions, post them here or email me directly.

CHALLENGE: I challenge everyone to complete everything listed below!

1.) MATH: No HW.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete your first draft of your powerful response for your picture book on your Google Doc. (Base this on your work you have done so far - visible thinking stickies, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions. Don't worry if your books/packages are at school. Work from your memory. You can use the materials in class tomorrow.)
Be sure to follow the criteria your received.
If you haven't already done so, share your Google Doc with me and make sure you allow me to 'edit' and 'comment'.
If you have any questions, post them here.

What do you think the message or big idea is for your picture book?
Provide 3 supporting examples from your picture book that supports your big idea. Remember, everyone will have different opinions and that is totally fine! We want to hear different perspectives from everyone! This helps us learn from one another.

@ Dotta - Don't worry. Just write what you can remember. We are only in the draft phase so you simply trying to get your thoughts down on your Google Doc. Let me know if you have any questions. You can add your powerful phrases in class tomorrow. :-)

I think the big idea is about if you out your mind to something you can reach for the stars.
I think this because Wesley made a language and also he made lots of friends and made a city kind of thing.

Avy said that his "friends" were being fake friends case they just wanted to be friends with Wesley because he was making money.

Taming said his "friends were being gold diggers because Wesley was making money off of his Westland IA.

The man with the violin
============================
The man with the violin is a very interesting book to me. I like it because the big idea is both meaningful and teaches kids to be aware of their surroundings. By teaching kids to be aware of their surroundings i don’t mean like a monster jumps a kid. Its when Dylan, the main character as well as his mum and the man with the violin. Dylan and his mom learn something. When they were going past the metro station they heard the sound of a violin. His mum didn’t care but Dylan did, he really wanted to stay and listen but his mom was like ‘Not today!’ Then they go home and listen to the radio, oh would you look at that! surprise surprise! The man with the violin was on. Dylan’s mom learned that if you stick around and pay attention to the great things around you. No harm would come.

I think the big idea of the book called "The Man with the Violin" is that you should play attention to your surroundings, and don't ignore it, but admire and enjoy it. My first example from the book that relates to the big idea is at the first page, the book said "Dylan was the one who notices things, and his mom was the one who didn't." My second example is when Dylan and his mom arrive at Metro Station. Dylan felt like the music notes were scattering everywhere, up and down, left and right. He noticed it and felt it. My third and last example was when the radio said that the man with the violin was a famous musician. His mom then knew that they should've stopped. One thing I learned from Book Club is that music and noticing things is a gift, because not everyone knows or understands music, and not everyone can notice things.

I think the big idea is to enjoy the little things around you. In the story Dylan noticed a man playing violin in the train station. Dylan’s mom didn't noticed it, because she was in a rush. I am like Dylan, because in the story he noticed a lot of things and I notice things around me as well. My mom always rush when she goes on the sky train. At the end, Dylan and his mom found out the man with the violin was a Famouse violinist. At the end of this book I found out this was a true story.

"Just a Dream"
I think the big idea for this book is that to care about the environment because at the start of the book Walter threw this rapper on the ground. Also Walter was talking to a girl named rose she was talking about this tree and Walter said I don't want a tree for my birthday. When Walter went to bed the first place he went to was a wasteland/Junkyard sorta like the movie wall-e. It reminded me of wall-e because there was junk and such all over the place and in the moi e wall-e the was garbage and stuff all over the place.

Question things
1.) I think it is to care more about the interment
2.) I think that because at the start Walter threw a rapper from a doughnut on the ground. And when he was talking to rose he said some thing like I don't want a dumb tree for my birthday. And he diden't sort the garbage.
3.) I learned that we all had the same idea

Matchbox Diary

From the book called, “Matchbox Diary”, I think the author is trying to say we should treasure our memories from the past by writing it in a diary or making your own matchbox diary. Even if it's a bad or sad memory, it will still count as one of the experiences you had in your past life. In every one of the picture book’s pages, the grandfather tells the child about each story in each matchbox. Whenever he put it in his palm, all the memories came flooding inside his head making him remember what happened that very day. (DRAFT)

Connections: (I will add it in the document soon enough...)

My great step grandmother has a LOT of antique stuff. She keeps them. Especially jewelries and silver coins from the olden days. "Old things that people had saved for years, filled with stories. Other people's diaries." Just like what the grandfather said, it's like her golden treasures.

The whole criteria/idea of *Clever Jack* is to be thankful/grateful for what you have! Everytime he looses something he is still happy/THANKFUL for whatever he has left! THIS TEACHES US THE SAME TO BE THANKFUL/GRATEFUL/HAPPY FOR WHAT YOU HAVE 😊

"Just a dream" A book I believe The big idea is that to not harm the environment like using gas powered vehicles and littering or we will destroy our planet. If we destroy our planet where would we go to live? The adventure of this book takes this boy name Walter who doesn't understand the meaning of keeping our enviroment safe so he gets taken into the future. It. Is not what he expected and is a wasteland of junk and poor resources. I also believe Walter adventure shows a lot of things that could connect the big idea of the book. I will explain the big idea.

The first world he goes to is a huge world made of junk and he finds out it is his old home. I believe the big idea for this area is not to litter or the earth will become a giant wasteland of garbage. I have a story about littering, one time I was 7 I was littering in bear creek park but my dad told me to not litter or the world would become a area of garbage. This is only the first of many areas he goes to in the book.

Secondly he goes into a world and spawns in a tree. He sees to people and they cut down trees to make toothpicks. I believe the big idea for this area is to try to grow trees so we don't run out of them because we cut them down a lot to make simple items like toothpicks and homes. I also believe that we should try to cut less trees or we will have none left like in the movie the lorax. In the lorax a guy cuts down all the trees so everyone breaths artificial air which cost a lot of money and they're is no more trees.

Thirdly he goes to a factory which is producing a ton of smoke which makes him kinda sick. He sees a worker and the worker tells him that they make medicine for the same reason that the smoke is. I Know that the big idea is to try not to use coal and fosse,cruel powered things because it pollutes the air and will let us not breath.

Forthly I believe the next world he goes to is Mount Everest. People are travelling to a hotel and I believe that the waters have risen so high that people want to go up just to be safe from rising sea levels.

I could do all of them but I will sum up a few of the boring worlds and easy ones to find out.

The water worlds big idea I think is that do not fish a lot or we will have no fish because in this world they're are fisherman and they only catch 2 fish a week.
He goes to a world of cars and I believe it the same reason as the factory one so we should not use fossil fuels.
The next world is. Little tricky but he goes to the Grand Canyon son believe all the dust we created got into the Grand Canyon so we can no longer see it because yellow smog blocks it.

The final world he goes to is a world in this sky which i don't know the big idea because it is so mysterious.

He returns home and realizes if he doesn't change his way the world will be destroyed. It's kinda like the plot with the mean guy and the 3 spirits before Christmas because they both start off mean but after seeing the future they realize they must change they're way. After that he changes his way and at night he goes to the future again. This time it is a nice future with trees and no problems. He realized if he keeps doing nice things like not littering and switching to non fossil fuels he can change the earth.

BIG IDEA:
CLEVER JACK TAKES THE CAKE:

I think the big idea is about a smart and clever boy who was invited to a royal party for the princess. He bakes a cake and delivers it to a princess, but along the way came many obstacles that take the cake piece by piece. Finally until he arrives with nothing left, but a story.

The royal, the cordially invites the children of realm

1.) He knew how to be resourceful

2.)He is dedicated to bring that cake to the princess.

3.)He doesn't care about small things.

I learned from David R is that he doesn't worry about small things as well. He is very desperate.

I think the big idea is about a great grandfather telling his memories of when he was a child to his grand daughter. Through out the story you can really tell the ups and downs him and his family went through just to get to America were his father is that he never actually got to see the only thing that he remembers of him is his mustache. What I mean by ups and downs was that they even had to leave there grandma back in italy when they were leaving to go on the boat she said " you'll eat the food there and forget your home" personally I think what she meant by that was when you leave a certain place that you grew up in for your whole life and you go to another you will obviously have to know there customs and there language.When I tell my mother I was hungry she'd give me an olive pit to suck on it helped" to me I think what that sentence was saying how hard it was to make money for your family back in the past. That sentence was sad because he was hungry but the only thing that his mother could give him was an olive pit if that's the only thing she could give him what is his mother and sisters gonna eat. Sorry I couldn't write anything else about the story but hopefully you guys understand the big idea:/.

I think the big idea is everyone makes a difference.

When Walter saw the future he noticed it looked way different than he thought. When he saw his street covered with garbage. He was thinking was this because of me? This made me think of why was Walter even littering before I thought he would learn about it in school.

Big Idea.

I think the big idea is to learn what would happen if you didn’t care for the environment or if you cared for the environment. In the story Walter goes through different dreams that means different things. In the beginning his garbage on the ground.
But then..
he woke up to his street filled with mountains of garbage , that happened because people littered all the time. And when he woke up in snow at Mount Everest , maybe that happened because of climate change and global warming. Maybe it had something to do with the Kinder Morgan Pipeline? It all ends with humans doing something to the environment .

Now I think he cares for the environment because he knows what the future might look like because he is proud of what the future of the tree will be like . That is what inspired him to be more motivated.
I learned to except what you have and to care for the environment more . At the end he knows that his tree will grow.

I think the big idea is to be patience and never rush because there is always time for little things while doing bigger things because in the story the kid would stay for a bit and wait, but the mom wouldn’t wait because she is always rushing around to do things quickly and also doesn’t notice things very well. So I think that you should take your time and notice your surroundings.

Evidence
Firstly in the story the mom is always rushed about something and never pays any attention to the things around her.
Secondly is when dylan heard the music he wanted to listen, but the mom said no because she is careless about her surrounding.
Lastly in the start of the story it said that Dylan’s mom wasn’t a person that notices her surrounding.

I learned that Dylan’s mom sounding like someone that is oblivious.

2) When Jacks mom declared that thye had nothing to give to the princess Jack decided to make a cake, when Jack lost all of his cake except for his succulent srawberry he kept on going to the princesses because he was precistant in giving her a gift, when the knight ate the strawberry Jack srill wemt to tge princess to tell her what happened.
3) I learned that if you make connections with other people you get a better expirence with your work.

Jack decided to make a cake, he would sell what he had left for ingredients mad barraged bashing mashing and making the beautiful cake. Out off all the odds Jadk came through with it and that's incredible

If I was the king I would've been so pleased at Jack because he faced all the odds and still got me a present, I would've been really happy because a poor kid did everything he could just to give me something on my birthday. I would've gave all the money he needed to feed his mom and himself, I sometimes wish I had a brother like that.

That I thought about the matchbox.
The story was really good and interesting I like how the grandfather kept items from his pass and each item has a different story.
He didn't know how to write so he kept the items in matchboxes I think that is a unique way to keep his memories.
He shares his memories with his granddaughter and told her the story that he has been in.

Just a dream

Just a dream is a book, the story written, and the pictures made by Chris Van Allsburg. What I think the "Big idea" of this book is that There's a guy named Walter, and he doesn't really care about the environment. He litters, he doesn't sort out his garbage, and he is into the future. One night, he went to bed, wanting to see what it's like in the future, and he had a dream about it. In his dream, he's in the future. But it isn't what he thought it would be. There isn't any flying cars, no robots, no tiny airplanes, nothing like that. There was junk, all garbage everywhere, he goes to different places. He sees these things that aren't what he was expecting, he realizes that what he is doing affects the future. After what all those things happened in his dream, he wakes up, then something changed about him. He cares about the environment, he realized if he helps take care of the environment, the future wouldn’t turn out what his dream said it would be. It would inspire other people to not litter, and to take care of the environment. This is what i think the big idea of Just a dream is.

Today I learned if you put your mind to something you could reach it! I learned this from Logan. Tamim told me a good big idea of his, he said "if you have a goal that you really want to reach you have to try hard just like how Wesley did in this book.

Mr.hong you were talking about how people could get depressed when you're getting bullied. I have this friend that gets bullied because he's fat and hairy. I have it's disrespectful because he is a human too

When Logan said "if you put your mind to something you could reach it!" that makes me think about myself because i try really hard to reach my goal of being a soccer player and i try really hard to get this special girl.
