Today, students completed an integral step in the learning and writing process. They started self-assessing their digital draft of their essay. For some, this is their point form outline. They are looking at criteria and finding ways to improve on their writing. I am excited to see the improvements in their writing over the next week or so after they complete the self/peer/teacher assessment and feedback process. They made more progress on their pop art today and completed another lesson in electricity.

IMPORTANT:
1.) REPORT CARD ENVELOPES: Please return them signed by your parents.
2.) CHURCHILL APPLICATIONS: These will be submitted directly to the high school tomorrow.

PLANNER/LEARNING:

What does it mean to be kind? To me, part of it means to not make fun of people when they do something embarrassing. For example, in the video it says, “everyone laughed, and I almost did to, but my mom told me to try to be kind, so I did.” This is a great example of trying to be kind. In other situations, being kind can mean taking care of your family or cleaning up after your pet or sibling. Whenever a new kid comes into the class, I try to be kind and welcome them in. It’s hard going into a class where you know no one and try to make friends from the beginning. What does it mean to be kind to you?

A great virtue to have in this world is kindness. Doesn’t it make you feel better after you’ve had a bad day, or you got hurt, to know that someone cares? That they want to help? I feel that what the author is trying to tell us is that kindness is expressed in different ways from different people, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t trying. There isn’t only one way to show kindness, and how you show it isn’t all that matters. For example, when the main character asks, “What does it mean to be kind anyways?” it shows that she doesn’t quite understand that there is more than one way to be kind. Later on, she lists all the things that she thinks could be what it means to be kind, and it shows just how many ways there are to express kindness. In the story, it also shows some pictures of people doing simple, kind actions, that probably helped some people a lot. The smiles of happiness on their faces proved that point. Even though some of them may be simple, two-second actions, it might have meant a lot to the person receiving them because it was nice to know that someone cared, and went through the effort. A personal experience that I connect to this story is whenever I get upset, I hate it when others ask if I’m okay after the fact. But, when something does happen, my brother doesn’t mention it, and treats me as he would normally. I consider this as a kind action because it shows that he cares. But, kindness can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. What do you think?

"Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person's life." In Be Kind, I think the Big Idea of this book is that everybody should be kind whenever they see a chance, no matter how small, big, cliché, or unique it may be. With so much kindness and empathy, everyone can live a happier life. I drew this Big Idea from text evidence and a connection that I made. Firstly, when the book stated the several ways of kindness, such as "Maybe it's giving" and "Maybe it's helping", almost every picture showed a person smiling. This told me how much kindness can mean to a person, and that a small thing can make someone's day better. In addition, towards the end of the book, Be Kind emphasized how many small acts of kindness can lead to a big one. Specifically, the book stated, "So big that our kindnesses spill out of school and go all the way across the world." This was a very important part of the book because it shows that spending just a bit of effort to be kind can affect so many people because kindness is so contagious; when one person receives a caring act, they will be compelled to give one to another person too. This will lead to a more positive and happy society. Finally, I connected Be Kind to the workshop I am currently attending - Engineering and Humanities. In this workshop, we learned about the relationship between empathy, kindness, and engineering. From that, I learned that all our buildings were built because of kindness; the purpose of architects constructing such structures were because they felt the need to help the world around them. Because of kindness and empathy, all these buildings are standing today. From this, I understood how important and significant kindness is in our world. What acts of kindness do you think you can give?

Additionally, try to show kindness whenever possible in a way that is helpful by understanding how somebody else thinks. In the text, the girl said to Tanisha "Purple is my favourite colour" as an attempt to cheer her up, but her thoughtfulness was interpreted negatively. This demonstrates how she wanted to be kind to others, but wasn't successful in doing so. Furthermore, another example from the book was the quote "What does it mean to be kind anyway?". She didn't know what being kind is about and how to even accomplish it. Therefore, I think educating people about ways to be kind and caring is important because it would be a shame if everyone has kindness in them, but couldn't even express it to others. Lastly, the girl came up with actions she could carry out later in the story, whether it be helping and giving to others, paying attention, or all of the above. She is trying to think of all the ways she could be kind to others in her community that would bring joy. While listening to the read aloud, I made a connection to something my mother tells me "It's the thought that counts". This means that someone's intention to be kind is the most important thing. In the book "In Be Kind" I think the big idea is that if you show kindness to someone, that person will spread kindness to other people it's like a disease but of kindness. A personal experience that I connect is when me and my mom went to the mall and we saw a car crash outside the mall and there was a baby inside so then me and my mom asked the mother if they were okay and then we helped the mom calm down because she was weeping so then we took here to shelter and called her family and that is what I connect too. I understand that A act of kindness can make someone's day and we all should show kindness when needed.

What is being kind? If you want to know what being kind is, do you have any special moments that happened to you before or if you have a bad day, but someone helps you? I know what the author is trying to tell us about kindness in multiple ways for any type of person, but that does not mean that they are not helping it’s just because there is more than 1 way to show kindness to different people. A sample of showing kindness is when any type of character in the real/fictional world says that “What does it mean to be kind anyway”? He/she didn’t even know what being kind is like and how to even achieve it. As in my opinion I think that making your opinion the same as the person having a bad feeling would be good because people can become friends if they have same interest (if sad) or if you try cheering hurt people up (injured people). I have made a connection to the real world that I cheer Owen from soccer after being hit by Benny and I said, “are you ok”. In conclusion I think being kind is important because it mostly states stuff related to the big idea and if you have any connections of being kind please share them to me.

Kindness is something that is not easy anybody it takes practice to be kind but that's alright because that's what makes it special. kindness is a decision it doesn't really come to anybody naturally it is taught over the years of your life. there are many things that can teach you kindness for example either you friends, family, even books but there is this one book called be kind. In this book it shows the importance of kindness in many different forms but i think that that the author is trying to say that kindness comes in many different sizes and it doesn't matter what size it is it can make a huge difference. now you know the importance of kindness.

What does it mean to be kind.
I think it means to soar to everyone and be respectful. An example might be if someone gets hurt and they fall you can help them up and bring them to the office or do what they want. Another example would be if someone is sitting alone and they look sad, you can invite them to play with you. You can also be kind by helping your parents and do your laundry so they have less laundry or wash the dishes sometime. Connection = I connected to the story when the girl tried to do something nice to Tanisha but it didn’t work and make her upset. I connected to that when someone got embarrassed and I tried to help them out but they didn’t listen and got them even more mad.
That is what I think being kind means.

"What is kindness anyway?" This is a quote from the book "Be Kind." I think the big idea of "Be Kind" is that you should be kind, no matter how small or big your actions are, and that even the small things make a big impact. For example, in the book she says "Maybe I can only do small things. But my small things might join small things other people do." This is saying that even if she does something small, it can be combined with other small things and eventually make something big. Another example is "So big that our kindnesses spill out of our school, spread throughout town...travel across the country...and go all the way...around the world." What she's saying is that it all started from a small act of kindness which combined with other small acts grew into something bigger, and those acts of kindness spread across the world, to make everybody kind. This shows that even if you put in a small amount of effort to be kind, your actions make an impact. Across the world. A small act of kindness can lead others to be kind, and eventually makes a chain, starting from just a small gesture. My personal connection to this is from a time I was selling Girl Guide cookies. I was selling cookies with my friends, when a lady came and bought a box. She left us with an extra $5, telling us to pay it forward to the next person. We did pay it forward to the next person, but then he payed it forward. It kept going on in a chain, each person paying it forward. From a small deed of just an extra $5 to pay it forward, others started being kind and paying it forward as well. In conclusion, you should always be kind to others, and make an effort to be nice to someone, even if it's something small, because it makes an impact, and eventually grows into something much bigger.

You can also show an act of kindness by doing chores for your family. As it mentioned in the story, a small favour could make a big change to the world. Furthermore, you could even donate to your nearest food bank or donate to people that actually needed the money. In conclusion, I think being kind could be many things and we should also treat people with respect and kindness.

Amelia Earhart once said, "A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees." What she is saying is that every kind action made can make other people do kind things as well. I think the big idea of the book 'Be Kind' is to be kind to everyone, no matter who they are, because after all, a single kind word or action, small or big, said or done to someone can really make their day. For example, in the book, it said, "Maybe I can't solve Tanisha's grape juice problem. Maybe all I can do is sit by her in art class." As you can see, what she did wasn't anything big, but by doing small things like these, you could really impact someone's day. Sitting by someone to make them feel better is a great way to be kind, and if someone is having a bad day, it could be very appreciated. In addition, the book also said, "Maybe I can only do small things. But my small things might join small things other people do. And together, they could grow into something big." This means that every kind action is valued, and can lead to very big and effective things. Around the world, kindness is seen everywhere, but there are also lots of mean, rude, and unkind things spread. That is why we need kindness to cover up all those hurtful words and actions, as no one wants to be treated that way. Kindness can increase someone's self-esteem and improve their mood. Being kind can lead to more positive emotions, rather than negative ones. A personal connection I had to this story is that once, my friend hosted a fundraiser for her friend who had cancer, and many people contributed, including my family, and in the end, they were able to receive enough money to pay for her medical situations. This really shows that even a small action or contribution to something can really make a big difference. In conclusion, the big idea of this story is to be kind, no matter what the situation is, because your positive actions and words can affect other's emotions too. In the end, being kind is much easier than being mean, and being kind is way better. Remember, kindness is contagious.

What is a mission we all wish to accomplish? Restoring faith in humanity. Being kind can make a huge impact on the community, world, and everyone around you. Not everyone knows how to express the kindness they have but maybe they show it in a different way. In the story, the girl said to Tanisha "Purple is my favourite colour" but Tanisha just ran off. The girl was trying to express her kindness to Tanisha with a comment but Tanisha did not take it seriously. I think the way the girl came up and said that wasn't really a neat approach. The girl could have came up with a greeting like "Hi, my name is Mais, what's yours?". In the book, it says "asking a new girl to be my partner" and that reminds me of my first day at Laurier Elementary when I was there on my first day of school. I sat at a table with a few very nice girls and them being nice to me was an amazing act of kindness since I was very nervous and shy. Kindness is in everyone and we all have different ways of expressing it.

I think this means that even if you only do small acts of kindness, it could lead up into something more, like the person you were kind to being kind to another person, and so on and so forth. As told by the religious leader himself, Gautama Buddha, "kindness should become the natural way of life, not the exception." Yes, he is entirely correct, and I think kindness should also be done naturally. From the book, it asks a question, "what does it mean to be kind?" There are many ways kindness can be shown, whether it's something small, or something so massive it could possibly spread throughout the world. Some examples include helping someone out when they seem down, or just giving someone a small compliment, which leads to my purpose. Be nice in general, because by doing so, you could earn the respect back when you're the one feeling down. But other than that, by being kind, you would've made the world better within those few seconds you were nice. If not, then a little more, because maybe that person you cheered up could've passed their positivity to another person. Personally, I sometimes tease certain friends, though that's because I'm familiar with them, and that I know their boundaries. Unless you know them so well that you know they're okay with it, avoid doing things like that as much as possible, because negativity isn't as good as positivity. For instance, the story showed a girl named Tanisha who had spilled grape juice all over herself. It didn't exactly end well for her, especially because the other kids laughed at the incident. It's worse to be laughed at than to be given something, like at the end of the story. Now for a personal connection of mine, once when my dad and I were at a restaurant, a guy was staring at me specifically, so I told my dad. He knew I wouldn't like it if he went up to him and talked to him, so we just left. It may not be that big of a deal, though I was glad he didn't do a huge confrontation in public. If it's something specifically done, or something small that doesn't seem like much, that's okay, as long as you buy someone a smile!

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” This is a quote that Princess Diana had once used. Being kind is kind of like a reward and kindness can always come back at you. If something bad happens to someone do not laugh, help them. Helping somebody when they need it can make you and the other person feel happy on the outside. This is not the only type of kind thing you can do, there are so many other ways to show kindness to others around you. For example, sticking up for somebody who is getting bullied. Most people just watch the person getting bullied and laughing but if you want to show an act of kindness you could stick up for them. Maybe you could even try and tell the person bullying that there are ways to fix the type of behaviour they are using. You can be kind by helping other people, or people you may not even know. An example I would use is that a few years ago when I was younger, I used to have super long hair but then I cut it and donated it to kids with cancer or other illnesses so they could make wigs out my hair. Kindnesss can be shown in multiple ways other than just helping somebody from being bullied. Another example could be staying behind to listen to somebody's problems. If somebody tells you something they may not find easy to share with others, they trust you so therefore you should listen and care about what they’re saying. Another way to show an act of kindness is by greeting somebody. Even if you don’t know the person, they could be going through a rough day so if you greeted them by saying hello and smiling at them it might just make their day. To sum it up, showing kindness can make you feel good inside and might just come back to you.

Honestly, after talking a little bit about kindness I think that the big idea is that showing kindness to somebody who may be going through a rough time can really make them happy. Later in the day the boy painted a picture for Tanisha since they both loved purple then Tanisha hung it up in her room. So, I think part of the big idea is showing that no matter how sad somebody could be you can give them a picture, drawing, a gift, or maybe even flowers and it might just cheer them up because you know that kindness can always come back to you. Something else I would like to add to the big idea is that I think that the big idea in this book is that showing kindness can always make another person's life or day brighter and happier. So, to sum it up, showing kindness can make you feel good inside and might just come back to you.

What does it mean to be kind? The book offered many examples of what being kind to others means, and the big idea is pretty obvious. The big idea the author is trying to tell us is that being kind is an essential skill to have, but it's not an easy thing to do. At the beginning of the story, the girl in the story attempted to be kind but was unsuccessful. The girl also asked " what does it mean to be kind anyways", she doesn't know how to be kind. Everyone should learn how to be kind to each other. The book stated many ways to be kind, such as helping each other, listening to the person speaking and using people's names. This told me that kindness can mean a lot to a person, it can make their day better. The part that stands out to me is when the book wrote, "So big that our kindnesses spill out of school and go all the way across the world." This part of the book shows how a little action can affect a lot of people. If a person receives a kind act, that person will learn how to be kind to others and spread. This will lead to the people around you being happier and having a positive effect. To summarize, showing kindness can spread and can affect people around you.

Kindness. Surely, you know what that is! Do you find yourself to be a kind person? Or are you full of yourself. Kindness can be shown just by complimenting someone, or giving them a nice gift! Kindness is an important thing to show, when you envy someone and show the opposite of kindness, expect that you’ll get the same treatment back, which I’m sure you wanted to be treated with kindness as well! And that, that’s what kindness is.
