Parents, students have been learning the value of self-assessments in their learning. Please watch this 6 minute video to give yourself a better idea of why we promote this in the learning that takes place in Gr. 7. Allowing students to look at co-created criteria for assignments makes the learning more meaningful. If you have some extra time, please also watch this video.

We have been learning about self-assessments in class. These are an extremely important part of your learning.
Watch this video - Empowering Students to Own the Assessment Process, and use your comprehension strategies to write a paragraph on 'SELF-ASSESSMENTS'.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain the importance of self-assessments in my learning.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:

1.) Paragraph format
- engaging hook
- Supporting sentences, examples, quotes, statistics, etc (body of paragraph)
- concluding sentence

2.) Explain why self-assessments, or assessing your own learning is an important part of your learning.

3.) Include at least 2 points from the video and provide details of those points/examples. Do not simply state something from the video. Do your best to add some details about why these examples are important to your learning.

4.) Give one person a suggestion for improvement (descriptive feedback) on their paragraph based on the above success criteria.

5.) REQUIRED: Edit/revise your original paragraph by replying to it. You must either make improvements based on peer-feedback you received, or based on a self-assessment you completed with the above success criteria.

6.) Ask questions if you are unsure of what to do. QUESTIONS, as you know are also an important part of your learning.

I think self-assessment is very important. Because the self-assessment can let us know our mistakes and we can improve. Just like playing basketball, those basketball stars are definitely not playing very well like now. They must have doing so many self-assessments. To understanding where they are not doing well, and then correcting them, will they have their brilliant like now. The teacher in the video said “It is only if student are open to continues learning that they will have the curiosity in learning.” I think she said is right. Because if the teacher let students lose interest in learning. Students' achievement will get worse and worse. That is the two point I find in the video. What about yours? QAQ

What helps us when we have no peers? What pushes us to improve and become a better person? Self-assessment is you looking at your own work and improving your own work and we all need it, it doesn’t matter if you’re a scientist, artist or just a student. Self-assessment is important since when you're in school and work, people are not going to be follow you around to tell you that this could be improved during the mid-course. In addition, you know your limit and you know what type of work you’re capable of. For example, self-assessing yourself using a rubric would allow you to see what you are doing while being able to see where the destination should be. You yourself needs to be honest to itself to slowly improve. Like once someone said, “The first step to personal growth, is the ability to make an honest assessment of where you currently are.” If we can self-assess on our work, I think we would slowly progress to our goal. Of course, it’s going to take a while but... I believe that I have enough time and patience for it.

To be successful in a specific area, to show, own and be proud of your work. To do this, it requires work and a willful spirit, it requires knowledge and understanding. And when you believe you have a finished product, take one step back, and self-assess yourself or even have a peer to assess your work. It is vital to assess because to have a finished product in which you could show your hard work and development, you need a strong structure that you yourself can confirm that it is one without mistakes, one that you could be proud of and one that people can look up to. Even if it were to mean your finished product is your organization on a simple sheet of paper in which you keep your notes, if something was unorganized or in a place which you wouldn't remember, it could cause you trouble which would then reflect on your time-management and it would slow you down. Assessing your work is a solution to that problem, it could manage your goal-setting, your plan approach, it could monitor your progress (Monitor Comprehension), self-reflections, reflect on your learning process, show your strength and weaknesses, etc. With self and peer-assessments, it could improve your work and tell you what you can do, what you could do and what to do, it is a very useful process and something everyone should do, it is not only contributed in work, but also in everyday life.

Self-evaluation is a great engaging way for students to see where they are on a scale from beginning to extending. There are many ways to do your self-assessments you can create a checklist, or look where you are on the column. By doing this, you can reflect on your learning, own up to your mistakes, and improve what required improvement. This process will set you up for success. Self-assessment is a crucial part of our learning, and by improving our skills to assess, we are improving our ability to learn.

Have you always been scared what you are going to get on your test? Well if you just follow one easy task, which is self assessment, you wont need to worrier about your score. So, self assessment allows you to look back into your work and check for your mistakes! During your self assessment, you can look at your criteria sheet and find the criteria to get extending! I think self assessment is really helpful when you are doing anything. For example, if you are playing soccer and you always keep kicking the ball to the right, you can self asses what you need to work on. So, if we have any work we need to do in class, we can all try self assessing our own work after when we are done the assignment!

Do you give yourself an overmark or an undermark when you self-assess your self? I think I do it just right. Self assessment is a powerful tool to use not only with jobs, but also in the classroom. When you finish something, it's easy to find mistakes and correct them. You can also do peer assessment to further improve your project. Sometimes, you can be harsh on yourself and give a bad mark which I don't believe is correct. Even if it's bad, at least you tried and put effort in it. Another thing about self assessment is that it can help teachers know how hard the students worked on a project if the teacher doesn't realize. It can be crucial to a person's mark and might even change your grade. What will you assess yourself?

Assessments for the future! Assessments are really important and useful to guide you to your final product at its best. As said in the video you can't always self asses, some times its important to have someone else to look at it with a fresh mind and let them asses for you, also called peer-assessment. Having someone tell you what they want. For self-assessments, they would be useful to catch flaws in your product, or to set your products uses.

Your beginning sentence wasn't much of a hook. You should fix that, and your concluding sentence should be something that ends off what your hook was. Besides that, your paragraph was nice! :)

The self-assessment is a really useful thing that you would need if you have no peers to assess your work, it can help you so that you get better marks for your project or work, it can help you in many different ways such as: fix mistakes you may have done and if you need to submit it. It can help you to follow the criteria so you get extending for your project or whatever that you need to do.

Do you know why self assessments are important? In my opinion, they are extremely important when you make a mistake. By self assessing yourself, you can make corrections in your work and it can remind you of the success criteria to get the extending column of it. Also from the video I have watched today, it tells me that everything we do in our life is a constant assessment which helps us to improve and without it, we will almost learn nothing from anything. After I watched the video, I thought that a life without self/peer assessments would be not fun anymore. What is your opinion about self assessments?

Seth - when giving feedback, try to be more descriptive (like in The Big 6). For example, next time you could say, "Try adding a more engaging hook to your paragraph", as opposed to "Pls redo your paragraph and follow the criteria".

Self-assessment is an important skill to learn because after you finish school, there is no teacher to assess you. You either have to assess yourself, or you could ask a friend or family member to assess it . Self- assessment helps you learn independently. This means you can do many more things. So if you haven't done a self-assessment before, learn how or you'll be far behind your friends in learning.

How would your work turn out if you didn't check it? Would you get an extending? Self assessment is an important tool I believe everyone should learn. It can push people's thinking and correct their work to do better. Something else part of learning is, continuous learning. Continuous learning is about being able to keep going and to learn. If people are stuck on a question and if they gave up, that's not continuous learning. If you're stuck on a question but you didn't give up and eventually learned about it, then that's continuous learning. I think continuous learning affects self assessment because self assessment is about trying your best and seeing how you can improve. If you gave up, that's not improving. If you want to improve your learning even more, you can rate your confidence of how you did. This reflects on both continuous learning and self assessment. If you gave up, your confidence level wouldn't be so high would it. If you didn't give up, you would eventually learn about and that means your were strong and confident to keep going! In conclusion, your work would be much better if you self assessed and it would boost up your learning and make your learning fun!

The big six learning principles are different things to do to help you improve anything. One of the six learning principles is self assessment. Self assessment will help you correct everything wrong so you can succeed in whatever you are doing. For self assessment you can use metacognition. Metacognition means to have awareness and understanding. It means you can find ways to improve. In the video it says it means to evaluate our own thinking skills and strategies. You shouldn't feel embarrassed for what you assess yourself with, just be honest. As long as by the end you show improvement. Another point they made in the video was persistence. Persistence helps students discover problems and think of new strategies to solve the problem. I think persistence means to keep going and keep trying even if it is hard to do what you are trying to do. By doing self assessment you will probably gain more confidence in yourself and if you aren't doing so well then it can help you realize what you need to work on.

Self assessment! Have you ever heard of it? If you haven’t, I’m here to let you know exactly what it means and how important it truly is. Finishing your work is one thing, but checking over your mistakes and correcting the incorrect is something you must do to fully complete the work. By assessing your work, you can also see what level you are on! You will notice your strengths and your weaknesses, what you need to improve on and what you need to know. Self assessments also get rid of bad learning habits. For example, maybe I’ve been doing a step of long multiplication wrong and I don’t even realize it! With the help of self assessment, I can immediately correct that mistake and carry on in the right direction. If you still don’t know where you might be, assessments from other people can help you too! They can give you descriptive feedback and you can build off of the feedback into your own self assessment. I hope this paragraph has helped you further understand why self assessment is so important for your work and I hope you will use this information for your next assignment! Overall, self assessment is a big step to fully finishing your work and making sure it is done properly with quality care!

"Learners need endless feedback more than they need endless learning." I think that Self-Assessment is a great way to improve your learning because, if you self assess you will know what mistakes you made instead of the teacher checking for you and you just shoving that paper in your desk or in your bag without reviewing it. Two points that I thought were really helpful when doing work are being open to continuous learning and thinking about our thinking. I want to add on to being open to continuous learning. It doesn't just mean pay attention in class, it means to be open minded to new subjects you learn everyday. Like today we learned about climate change that was something new we did in class and I enjoyed reading everyones KWL. It was something fun and we got to learn lots about our earth and what's happening. Adding on to the other point that was in the video, Thinking about our thinking. I think that means to understand what we are saying and keep thinking about what we write and review it in our heads. Therefore by self assessing you can be more confident in yourself and have more power to speak in front of more people. Always believe in yourself and review your work over and over and before you know it you will already have perfect grades.

How does self assessments help your learning? In this paragraph, I am going to tell you why self assessments are important for your learning. First, using a Self-Assessment Rubric helps you to get instructions that are clear and useful. It is a guide how to get extending too. It is also used when you finished your work. You can see if you followed the Self Assessment Rubric to see if you need to edit/revise your work. Secondly, you can also use a checklist see if you completed the criteria like the Self Assessment Rubric. I think the checklist is better than the Self Assessment Rubric because you can see what things you did and you did not clearly. In conclusion, you should always do these things when you're doing work, projects, and when you're making something.

When you hand in your test and you are terrified on what you are going to get cant sleep but next morning you get your test back and they sis not mark it. What do you do? Well that is when you give your self a self-assessmant. What is a self-assessment you ask well a self asseasmant is when you either check your work your self or when you have a criteria sheet and you check what you have and what you dont have like they said in the video. Next is when we need to have contiues (i dont know if that is the correct spelling or not so srry) learning its like when you play a sport you need to have a strategy but than if that one dosent work than you have a plan b to beat the other team. But lastly it all comes down to how you think you are doing than you assess your self on how you think you did.

I believe that being able to self asses yourself and understand what you know and don’t know is a great thing. Because, that feed back helps the teacher to set a criteria for success for you. It also gives you an idea of where you are in your learning. I also think that being able to, as they put it in the video, use a thumbs up and down or in our case today, in P.E, red, orange, yellow, and green lights to show where you think you are in the work are great strategies.

Do self assessments help you learn? Yes! Self assessments help you improve your work. You can do this by using the 6 big learning principles. It’s important to assess your work so you can see what you need to fix! If you write something that is worth 30% of your grade, you would want to check it for any mistakes so you could get a higher grade, and it’s not just abour writing, it can be anything! Like with math you should double check the questions, and with art you should check if you followed the success criteria. Self assessments are very important!

Self assessment can help you gain more confidence. Self assessing is important for many reasons. It can help students gain confidence about their own skills and self assessing can show students their true potential in learning. Another very important part of this skill is giving yourself a criteria which can higher your standards for work. Self assessment is when one evaluates themselves or checks their work for mistakes using one's own knowledge. Even if you're wrong you can always learn, you can ask others or research for yourself. Others may say whatever you're working on isn't "good" but you should probably take your opinion over others. In conclusion self assessment is a big part in learning and if you use it, you will probably be more confident.
