Tell your parents about the NOVEL APPROACH!

Today, students had their first lesson in 'READING' We call our way of learning 'THE NOVEL APPROACH'. Our approach is based on sound educational research. The 'BIG 6' learning principles are embedded in the learning and we teach students how to use the main reading strategies that developing readers use to improve their comprehension. They explicitly learn the reading strategies and how to use them through teacher modelling, student practice, and descriptive feedback that pushes their learning forward. We can't wait to see the learning thrive this year!

IMPORTANT:

Bring 'TOONIES for TERRY' tomorrow and the rest of the week. Let's raise as much money as possible to put toward cancer research!
We will do a self/peer-assessment tomorrow for your daily PAR responses. This will be uploaded to FreshGrade for your parents to see. If you haven't completed some of them, be sure to go back top complete any PARs you have missed.

1.) MATH: Watch this video on Prime Numbers. This will prepare you for tomorrow!

2.) LA: Word Work.

3.) SCIENCE: Projects due on Friday.

4.) ART: Continue working on your collage.

Today, you learned two reading strategies:

1.) I can set a purpose to guide my reading.
2.) I can use my background knowledge (and connections) to guide my thinking and
learning.

Using both reading strategies, I want you to write a paragraph (intro, supporting sentences/body, and conclusion) on how you use these strategies when you read everything on our daily website post.
You can think of this as writing a paragraph on your visible thinking for reading our class website.
Give one student a suggestion on their paragraph writing (intro, supporting sentences/body, and conclusion.)
Feel free to give them suggestion on the givens as well (spelling, grammar, capitals, sentence structure, etc)
Edit/revise your original post based on the feedback you receive or your self assessment.

Reading strategies gives us tools to be able to understand what we are reading. The first reading strategy we learnt about today is setting a purpose to guide my reading. The purpose of reading this website and the blog posts everyday is to remind us of what our homework is as well as allow us to learn from others by reading their responses to the daily "Post a Response". The second reading strategy we learnt about today is to use background knowledge to help us understand what we are reading. If I didn't have the background knowledge about background knowledge then I wouldn't be able to make the same connections. In conclusion, applying reading strategies allows us to understand things better is our daily lives.

My purpose: To complete my homework.

Have you ever ask yourself "why am I reading this?" Well if you are I'm going to tell you how to answer that question.

Firstly you have to set a goal to complete your homework by finishing it in a timely manner. Secondly, remember reading class homework is a opportunity to learn. Lastly, finishing your homework decreases your chances of getting in trouble. I remember in grade 4 I forgot to complete my math homework so I got in trouble and got detention.

Reading can be fun even if it's part of homework.

During class we learned two new reading strategies, the first reading strategy is to set a purpose to guide my reading, what does that mean? it's basically why you read to get information or maybe you read just for fun. For example you might be reading for a project and you need some information about turtles, you can read 101 facts about turtles to get some info about them. Second strategy is using background knowledge, you usually use background knowledge when your writing paragraphs for Fresh Grade, Par or even maybe a paragraph about your childhood. It's great to have reading strategies, it helps you a lot while we read books for information or even for fun.

Have you ever not understood what your reading? Well if you read this, you will know a couple of strategies and maybe even use them in your daily reading/assignments.
Strategy #1: I can set a purpose guide my reading. That means that you can figure out why your reading it. For example; you can read because you want to, to expand your learning or to answer a question. When you find out why your reading it, it may make a tiny bit more sense, or a lot.
Strategy #2: I can use my background knowledge /connections to guide my thinking or learning. That means that you can use the stuff you already know to make connections. So if you had a book that has no words (and yes they do make those) you can use this strategy to try and figure out what it is trying to tell you. These strategies can be useful in many ways if you use them correctly. If not, then you can try some other strategy.

Here’s an example: your reading because you thought it looked interesting or your reading because you want to expand your learning. The second strategy is I can use my background knowledge and connections to guide my learning. It basically means you can use what you know to make connections. For example you see a picture maybe with a person crying and the background had a moon and took place on a field you can make tons of connections based on what you know like: My school has a big field like that one. READING, has more steps to it than you think. It’s no just about looking at the word and saying them or repeating them in your head. It’s about knowing the definition from the dictionary and the definition in that moment, what it means, how the characters feel in that split second.

To understand how the characters feel, you have to find some sort of connection that you share. Not just connection to a character but also connection to the events, feelings etc. Connecting is a strategy. Something to help you truly understand the story, event or characters. For example if I were reading a book about slavery I would not be able to understand it unless I at least knew what slavery was. Now that’s what we call background knowledge, it’s can be an real life experience you’ve had or something that you have read about, heard about, researched on etc. Without background knowledge or connection, you can never truly “read” a book

Setting a purpose. Tell me are most of you familiar with this phrase? Up until a while back I didn’t really think about how setting a purpose during studying or reading something can make a huge difference.start by setting 2-4 purposes, my first few are usually.
Roughly read
Ask questions
Make connections and use background knowledge
Synthesis and evaluate the big idea
setting purposes are supposed to help you come to the main idea and help you determine what information you need and don’t need.

In concluding reading strategies are game changers on how we read. They are a great way to help us understand deeper meaning of information and text.

Today we learned two reading strategies, the first one is setting a purpose. It means why are you reading? Is it for fun, homework or someone made you. Ask yourself this question if you are reading this exact paragraph right now. It kinda pushes your learning as you go deeper to understand what the book or picture is telling you. NOW, the second strategy is background knowledge and making connections. It means you are using what you know to make connections. I use the first strategy for reading other students PAR and reading other things. For the second strategy I use it in my PAR and sometimes when I am reading. Reading strategies are a great way to understand what you are reading.

Today we learned about reading strategies that we can use when we read and I will be talking about how we use them to read the instructions on the website. First one is to set a purpose that will guide my learning and reading. Here is an example: you saw a book that looks interesting so you pick the book out and read it. The way you can use this on the website is if you saw something new you can watch it or read it and it may be really important. This is how you can use reading strategies on this website.

Today in class we learned about reading strategy’s.

1.the first strategy we learned was setting a purpose which means you find out why your reading it it could be out of interest or mandatory/homework to do you know what your reading and not read something your not interested in

2.The second strategy is using your background knowledge which means you can use what you already know to make connections you can use this to relate to the novel and make clear points that you’ll remember

Today my class learned about the first two learning strategies, they are setting a purpose(s) and making connections, this is often used on Mr.Hon's website. As you can see, in order to give someone feedback(which is necessary) you need to read there par, and to read the par you need to understand, and just reading it will not help you understand, so you need to set purposes and make connections for better understanding.

Today we learned about reading strategies and I'll be telling you today. The first strategy is to set a purpose for when your reading. If your asking yourself why am I reading this you probably aren't doing anything productive. Some examples to setting a purpose are homework, entertainment, facts, etc. The other strategy we learned is that I can use background knowledge to guid my thinking. Like this if you don't understand a page and there's a picture you could use that picture to help understand the page better. So those were the strategies I learned today.

When you read books do you think to your self thisk makes no sense!

Well if you have the reading strategies will help you with that. This strategies are setting a pourpose of your reading like why your reading this because... and there are other strategies like making connections like oh they have a brother and i have a brother.
In conclution you can use reading strategies to improve your reading and to help you understand your reading.

Today we learned about two "new" strategies to improve comprehension of reading. The first strategy is to set a purpose for reading this piece of writing. I generally do this on my own (though its mostly because my mom makes me). The second strategy was to use background knowledge to understand text, I also do this a lot, when I'm reading I tend to talk to myself (in my head) and discuss what just happened with myself, sometimes when I don't understand a piece of writing i generally re-read or just think about it with myself

These "new" strategies are the building blocks to better comprehension and should be worked on everyday with READING.

There are many strategies when it comes to reading. Today during Novel Approach, we learned about 2 helpful reading strategies.
The first reading strategy is to set a purpose. When you set a purpose, you ask yourself, why are you reading this? Is it for entertainment, information, etc.? When you set a purpose, you automatically look for the information you need, which will help you achieve what you needed/wanted to know.
Another reading strategy was to use background knowledge to help make connections and understand the story. By using background information, you understand the concept more and can relate to it more.
In conclusion, reading strategies are very important to help you understand the story more. :)

If you think about it, we've never really learned how to read. By grade one we probably all knew how to read text, but did we really understand it? We really haven't been taught how to understand text. This year, we will be learning about reading strategies. Reading strategies consist of 6 different components, monitoring comprehension, using bk to make connections, synthesizing and evaluating, determining what's important, and setting a purpose. Today, we mainly focused on setting a purpose and using bk to make connections.
What is setting a purpose and using bk to make connections?

Setting a purpose: A point or something you want to focus on and achieve.

Using bk to make connections: Basically using what you know and applying it to the text to make meaningful connections.

When I read the website every day, I usually subconsciously set some purposes. Usually to get a feel, to understand the daily par, and to check the daily blurb for any important information. Sometimes, when reading the daily blurb, I make connections to what we did at school.

In conclusion, I'm really excited about novel approach this year!

Today in class, we learned to major and important reading strategies = those include setting a purpose and using background knowledge to make connections.

The first reading strategy is setting a purpose, setting a purpose is basically having a reason to do something rather than blindly do it, when you set a purpose you know what you’re reading for, and often times people don’t realize they’re sitting a purpose in daily activities such as reading and writing.

The second reading strategy is using my background knowledge to make connections to help guide my learning. When I use my background knowledge and make a connection I understand what that part meant and when I understand I can pretty much directly relate to what’s happening in the story for example, in the book his sister goes out and buys lemonade for him after a long run. When I was a kid I was playing soccer and I injured my leg when the medics came and helped me my mom went and got me lemonade and a hotdog, and that was a long time ago. And when I relate I feel as if I was aw and when I relate I feel as if I was going back a few years into my background knowledge.

In conclusion, both of these reading strategies are crucial to the success of all students of all ages no matter what grade this is some must know information, if you do not know how to connect with your background knowledge or set a purpose for what you read or do. I think these two reading strategies are like gold because without them we would have no purpose .

We learned about two reading strategies today and these two strategies will help you understand better and learn things quicker. We always start with setting a purpose and that’s because you want to know why you’re reading this. For me the purpose of reading the class website is to get information, to do my daily P.A.R., and to get information about our homework. Second we have our background knowledge and making connections, which means that you use what you already know then make a connection to what your reading. I use this when I’m doing my P.A.R. These two reading strategies will really help you in understanding anything better and now you gained more knowledge. So from on try these two reading strategies to see if they help you comprehend better.

Today in class we learned about two different reading strategies; setting a purpose and using our background knowledge to connect to the text we are reading.

SETTING A PURPOSE - Setting a purpose is writing a reason for you to do something or to achieve a goal. This allows you to focus on something and increases the chances of you achieving that goal. For example, if you're reading a newspaper article, you may set a purpose for yourself just to get a feel of what it's about. After doing that, you'd read the article for the first time just to get a feel of what it's about. Maybe for your next purpose you would set a purpose to find answers to questions you had along the way when you first read the article.

MAKING CONNECTIONS - Making connections is something people do without realising, which is just going through your background knowledge to find anything to connect to the piece of text your reading. Say, if you were reading a book and on one page it describes a child who had a dog, you could relate to that if you once had a dog. Obviously, that was just a very simple connection, but your just basically reading the text, and then relating or connecting to it by accessing your background knowledge.

Reading strategies will help you understand what your reading, and can definitely improve your reading, therefor improving your learning altogether!

Today we learned how to set a purpose and make connections using background knowledge. After learning this you might realize that they're in everyday things like the PAR. When you read the blurb at the top your first purpose will probably be to get a feel. To figure out what it's talking about. Then you might scroll through the rest of the PAR to see what's for homework. When you get around to actually completing the PAR you will probably re-read the criteria to make sure you are meeting the criteria. BAM two strategies in one sentence! You monitor your comprehension by re-reading and you set a purpose by making sure that you meet the criteria. Then when you wrap up your PAR you re-read your work to catch all those silly mistakes. After doing that I usually check the criteria to make sure I got everything then done! In conclusion there are many times where you set purposes and make connections while living through your everyday life. Can you notice when you make them?

Today in class (among other things) we learned 2 basic reading strategies. Those being setting a purpose and making a connection. Let me go over those two. The idea of setting a purpose before reading is so that you have a idea of what to think about or focus on while reading. For example if i needed to read a paragraph about the production of canned bean soup then i would base my reading on canned bean soup and not bike tires. Having a idea of what your reading this for helps you to focus on the main topic and also motivates you to a certain degree. The second strategy is making connections. This is as making connections can help you relate to the material that you are currently reading which should either increase your intrest or help you understand it better as you have background knowledge on that topic or something similar. For example if say i was reading about bean soup then i could make a connection to the wikipedia article on bean soup i read in 2016 for fun in an airport. These reading strategies should help to improve ones understanding of the subject that is being read.

Yesterday we learned two different reading strategies, the first one was setting a purpose and the second one was using our back round knowledge. To set a purpose means what you want to think about and to know what to focus on.

The second one, which is using our back round knowledge (connection) means to use what we already know because it helps you a lot. We use our back round knowledge everyday and you probably don't know that you do. In conclusion these to reading strategies help you lots when you read.
