Thursday: Child Labour Through Images

Seeing a candid photo of their own "morning faces" gave students a good laugh; however, it also brought to their attention how revisiting and reflecting on a situation may give them surprising information that they had not noticed before. With this segue, students began to think about revisiting their writing, noticing areas that need improvement, and revising their body paragraphs based on criteria. Students completed self- and peer-assessments to facilitate the revision process.

In social studies, photos were also used for learning purposes. Students viewed several photos related to child labour, and brainstormed questions via TodaysMeet. This will lead nicely into the social studies unit about global child labor issues.

1.) MATH 6: The retest is tomorrow. Watch this video on percents.

MATH 7: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) Le français: Finis "mon extraterrestre" (le dessin et les 5 phrases)

3.) LA: Revise your 1st body paragraph (from today's class) and work on writing your 2nd body paragraph.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit the Learning Journey of Ghost and browse his entire site.
Leave at least 2 comments on his passion blog or on another area of his website!

5.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Based on the picture above, post 2 deep, thoughtful, open-ended questions.
Try not to post the a question someone else has already posted.

question 1: why are those children carrying blocks could they be doing work or are they being enslaved?

The pictures were taken by an organization called "CIDA". Try researching about CIDA (what does it stand for? what does the organization do?) and you will find out more about why they have photos like the one posted today.

1.) I think maybe they did have to bring all those bricks because they look placed in a wall shaped stature.

2.) I really think the reason behind the white dust is because they're carrying bricks over their heads.

Suggestion: Maybe you could do some questions that don't seem to simple because I think my answers we're pretty similar to other peoples opinions about this picture.

They might have had to carry all those bricks. I think their face is covered in dust because they are carrying bricks that were in the sand, so the bricks are probably dusty.

I think there is child labor because people are lazy, cold-hearted, cruel, and just plain brutal. One other reason isn't because they're mean but because they need to work.

I think there are no caucasion people there because they are in a third world countrie, and in Canada you are not allowed to work until you are 15 or 16. I don't know if they have a big family or not, but I think they are trying to support theur family.

- In my opinion, I think people would take a picture of this to show other people around the world how third world countries survive. I personally think those children were forced to work like that.

I wonder. I think that maybe the photographer took this picture to raise awareness for child labour. Maybe it's to show us what is happening in the world, but we don't always see it. The photograph opens our eyes, seeing situations around the world that we can stop, but we don't stop.
I think they may be building a house.

1.) Because they hold them with the backs of their necks, making it slightly easier, but also because they have been doing it for so long that it doesn't hurt.

2.) Because their parents would make them stop carrying the bricks, and the person who is making them do it wouldn't like that.
