THURSDAY: Criteria and Peer-Assessments

Peer assessments!

Today, the students worked hard in their studies. We spent a great deal of time on the peer-assessment process. The students checked their work against criteria in L.A. (essays) and in Science (Adaptations research). In addition to this, they gave each other feedback and streamlined it with their Google documents and the mark-up process. They were able to check the feedback they were given, see what they had to do to improve their work, make the edits/revisions, and actually physically click on the 'RESOLVED' button only after they had made the improvements to their work. The students have been working on giving good, specific feedback comments since the beginning of the year. Others have been working on it since they were in Gr. 6.
1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: 2 Worksheets - double sided handed on adding fractions with grids and worksheet 2.5

2.) SCIENCE:

Projects are due tomorrow. Be sure follow the criteria sheet carefully and closely in order to do well on this project.
Make sure you have made the necessary edits to your 5 paragraphs.
You will only have time to print your materials off tomorrow. Print them at home if possible.
You will have time only to glue your posters together tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

In Science, you have been actively researching and learning about different types of adaptations that have contributed to the survival and success of different animal species.
Today, you have a research assignment. You must answering the following questions in a clear and organized manner:

1.) Research and identify 2 different birds with different types of beaks. Briefly explain how the different beaks help the different birds.
2.) Provide your reliable source(s).
3.) Research and identify 2 animals that have a symbiotic relationship. Briefly explain the type of
symbiotic relationship. (mutualism, parasitism, or commensalism)
4.) Provide your reliable source(s).
5.) Research and identify 2 animals that have different types of feet/hands. Briefly explain how
this helps each animal.
6.) Provide your reliable sources(s)

A parrot has a hooking beak which helps it get food easily. The second bird is a woodpecker and they have a sharp beak to peck the wood on trees for food or to make a home.

Parasitism: A flea and a dog. The flea gets a nice cozy home and some food while the dog gets itchy and hurt. Only one benefits. (not the host)

A duck has webbed feet and it lets the duck paddle through the water easier. A Kangaroo has very strong legs and that is why they can jump very high.

The second animal with different hands and or feet is the monkey. like humans the monkey apart from most animals have opposable thumbs and fingers that help the monkey traverse in trees and swing on vines because of the body weight and hand figures that help them escape from predators.

1. Thin, slender, pointed beaks are found mainly in insect eaters. They are used to pick insects off leaves, twigs, and bark. This warbler is a good example.
Woodpeckers have strong beaks which taper to the tip, forming a chisel for pecking holes in trees for food or nests. Most feed on insects which live under the bark.

2. The relationship between cattle egrets and cattle.

3. A duck has webbed feet where a gorilla has more human feet almost. This helps ducks because it gives their feet some stickiness so they don't sloop near water, while gorillas big strong feet so they can climb around.

Bird 1. The Woodpecker uses its beak to rapidly beat on a hollow tree, metal roofs, and even satellite antennas to make mating calls so the other gender can hear it from 3 km away. This is heard in every season but spring.

Bird 2. The hummingbird has a long needle-like that they use to probe in the flowers. They extract the nectar out of the flower like how a paper towel would pick up water from wiping it.

An example of a Mutualism relationship would be between the plover bird and the crocodile. This is common in Africa. This is a win win situation for them since the plover bird cleans the crocodiles teeth by eating what is left and this benefits the crocodile because it gets a clean mouth so it can hunt and survive.

Marmosets use their hands to hang on to trees branches by pressing on it with their palms using bent fingers together in a arc shape called the power grip. This allows their hands to be more useful for using small objects.

Birds:
1.) Humming bird: The humming bird uses it's sharp and long beaks to get to its nectar from the flowers. http://projectbeak.org/adaptations/beaks_sipping.htm

2.) Eagles: Eagles have a very strong head and beak making it easy for them to get the flesh and meat off their predators bones. They will eat this flesh and meat or most of the time just give it to their hatchlings. http://a-z-animals.com/animals/eagle/

Diferant fish and bugs that live in the sea will feast off the whales mouth and flesh's bacteria making the whale more healthy, and these bugs and fish live off this bacteria along it the perfect snack for fish and bugs to survive to. The source is me because I learned this multiple times in grade 3 and 4.

Snow leopards have very heavy bony parts such as feet and tail that make it easier to get around and climb the rocks and mountains in. The source is me because I researched this while studying my science project. I will try to post the link I found this info from.

The long and wide beaks American White Pelicans have can hold up to 3 gallons of water in its mouth! Hummingbirds have long beaks so they can reach nectar and long tubular flowers.

The spider crab and algae is an example of a mutualistic relationship. Spider crabs live at the bottom of the ocean and brownish-green algae lives on top of the spider crabs making them unseen by their predators.

Kangaroo's feet can help them jump up to six feet in the air. Unlike the rest of the penguin's body, their feet are bare without and blubber or waterproof plumage. This helps them from freezing or overheating.

Mergansers, specialized for eating fish, have sharp tooth on the edge of the bill to hold fish tightly.

duck bills are for plucking plants and a robins beak is for grabbing worms from the ground. Audubon society is a good source for bird info.

the rhino the oxpecker bird have a symbiotic relation ship by eating ticks and other external parasites. my source is pawnation.

moose have wide hooves to help them move in swampy water. bears have padded paws to run fast and climb trees.

1.) The woodpecker has a sharp beak to drill wholes in tree because that is were it finds food. Another, bird that has a special beak is the pelican. The pelican has an elastic pouch in it beck which it uses to catch fish.

2.) A symbiotic relationship is the oxpecker the zebra. The oxpeckers eat any bugs of the zebras skin for food and the zebra gives the oxpecker a safe home. The oxpecker also, flies up when danger is around and screams to tell the zebra. This symbiotic relationship is mutualism which means the zebra and the oxpecker both get something good out of it.

3.) A snow leopard has wide and furry feet to make a snow shoe so the leopard does not sink in deep snow. Also the racoons hands look like human hands and help them catch fish out of streams, there hands also help them groom themselves.
