TUESDAY: Reading Strategies and Making Predictions

3/5/2013

Reading is not simply about being able to sound out letters to make words. Reading is also about fluency and understanding. The students have learned the importance of different strategies that help them understand what they are reading at a deeper level. To do this, they work on predictions, visualizations, connections, images, language, questions, etc. Today, they brainstormed and made predictions about 'Iqbal'. This will be a great novel to read and make connections to because it touches on worldly issues the students are learning about in Social Studies (IE Human rights, child labour, etc).

1.) MATH 6: Any work assigned by Ms. Bohnert.
MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Post your 'Iqbal' predictions here in paragraph form.
Do your best to include most of your ideas from your brainstorming session today.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Watch this video and list 3 things you will remember to do on Thursday.
Also, list 3 reasons why you will remember these points.

3.) FIELD TRIP:

We need one more driver for snowshoeing on Thursday. Please ask your parents if they can volunteer on Thursday and email me as soon as possible.

I think that this book is about a very sad boy who's parents have died and has to work very early at morning and late at night at a carpet making company in Africa who soon gets saved by some good people like the United Nations. I think that this book will be very adventurous and sad at the same time.

I think that this book is about a very sad boy named Iqbal. It feels like his parents have died. In the picture it looks like that he has to work very early at morning and late at night at a carpet company in Africa who soon gets saved by some good people like the United Nations. I think that this book will be very adventurous and sad at the same time, I think this because on the cover of the book, his emotions look very downsided.

I will remember to have a hot beverage so I do not freeze to death.
I will also remember to bring extra gloves incase my gloves rip or something.
I will also remember to bring a drink like water so I do not get de - hydrated.

1.) bring proper clothing because I don't want to be soaking wet after the "adventure/experience".
2.) I also will bring the stuff that the you tube guy was talking about.

A)Bring extra layers in case I fall and get soaked. I will remember this because If I get wet it will make me uncomfortable.
B)I will remember the stuff about the poles and keeping puting your foot hard on the ground.

My prediction of IQBAL is he is a slave looks around 11-13 and it seems like he makes clothing/rugs. It seems like he has no parents and he is in labor so a company lets him work there.

Also, I will remember to
1.) Stay with everyone and not do anything someone says not to
2.) Use my experiences from past snowshoeing event I have had.
3.) Try to bring everything that would be useful in the video on todays post.

1.) I will remember because anything can happen and I would not want that to happen to me so I would stay focused.
2.) I will most likely have the past time I went snowshoeing stuck in my head.
3.) I will remember this because I wil probably watch the video before we go to school and check if I have the things we would need.

@ Gamer - Sure you can! Do you know anything about Iqbal? Google the cover of the novel and see what you can predict simply from the picture. Here's a hint, it has to do with human rights/child labour. Your prediction can't be wrong! After all, it is a prediction! Use what you know about child labour and the clues on the cover to write your prediction.

I think that the boy lives in india or africa and has to go to work every day for a bad price and a bad to work. His parents made him because, like every child who has to work for child labour, they were very poor.

I will bring:
1. A warm coat (who wouldn't?) because it will get very cold up on Grouse.
2. My skates because I want to skate when i'm there with my best friend ThunderClaw. (from Ms. Wilson's class)
3. A water bottle because I might get thirsty.

My prediction is that the story will be about how Iqbal was taken into and escaped the carpet factory he worked in. I think it will talk about what life was like in the factory and why he was killed.
I will remember to:
1) Pack safety gear just in case.
2) Make sure my feet are spread wide enough apart
3) I am going to remember to use the poles to help me maintain balance.
Reasons why:
1) For #1 I will take safety gear because if something happens and we end up there overnight than I will be prepared.
2) For #2 I will keep my feet spread apart so that I do not fall.
3)For #3 I will use the poles to help me stay balanced because if I do not I could fall and hurt myself

I think the sequel will include a different person but works in the same shop as Iqbal. He will have the same problems that Iqbal was having but different because he might be in a different situation that Iqbal was in instead he has to work there to pay for his family to stay alive.
1.) I will bring a warm winter jacket.
2.) I will a granola bar or something to snack on.
3.) I will bring plenty of water to drink.

2.) I will put food in my back pack so I do not forget it.

1) An extra jacket just in case yours gets wet and you need a fresh one.
2) And one more you could bring is another pair of gloves if yours get wet from the snow or if they get dirty. :)

My perdiction is, that in this book there is a child named iqbal and in the storyline I think that he was going to get some money to keep his family alive and that he was going to have to work in a factory like a carpet factory like everyone is thinking and I think that as well and what I think is going to happen is science he was being used in a carpet factory that had bad working conditions and that he would try and find a factory or somewhere that iqbal might be able to get better pay and working conditions to save his family.

On Thursday when we are snowshoeing I will remember to step hard when I am walking up or downhill so that I can get traction ad so that I don't fall and hurt myself or anyone else near me. I will remember to stay on the trail and to follow the instructions of the guide because they work there and they have more experience so they know what they are talking about. I will also remember to stay with the group to avoid getting lost.

For the field trip on Thursday, I will remember to:
- Bring beverages such as regular water, and maybe hot chocolate to stay warm. I think I will remember this because I will need to stay hydrated in some way.
- Wear warm proper clothing. Like a warm winter coat, snow pants, snow boots, etc. I will remeber this because I will dress for the weather. I want to stay warm in the cold and I want to have a good eperience snowshoeing,
- I will remember how to walk uphill downhill and how to correctly put on my snow shoes. I will remember by watching the video a few more times. Also, I want to know the proper way to walk and where to so I stay safe.

(I already read the novel and I know the story.)
I think the sequal of the novel will be about another child like Iqbal and their story. Additionally, I think the ending could be a twist and show their human rights. The child may escape and live a happier life, and the child starts a program for child slavery. (To free children)

- What I will bring for the field tip on Thursday-

- To stay warm I will bring a set of clothes for my hands
- I will also, bring a small backpack that has all my snacks and water bottles in not a heavy back but a light.
- I will bring a water bottle and maybe some hot chocolate in a mug for my hands incase they get really cold.
- I will wear boots, gloves, winter jacket, etc. So that I dress properly and be prepared for the cold and exciting field trip!

I predict the book will be about a boy, at the age of 12 named Iqbal. I think it takes place in Africa. Iqbal has been forced to be a slave at a carpet/ rug factory. He might try to say " this is not right " , and he says that he doesn't want to work, but the boss is mean. I think that he will try to escape and while he is trying to escape he will get shot by the boss.
1.) I will remember too dress appropriately. I will do this because if you go snowshoeing with shorts and a T - shirt you will get frost bite and get sick.

I think you should make your sentences about snowshoeing, into paragraph form. You should write how you will remember to do the stuff on your list.

Snow shoeing you always want to keep your feet sort of wide apart so the snow shoes do not make contack with eachother. You always want to lead with your poles first. snow shoes are great for the tracktion you need on snow to stay walking and to not slip.

Eat a good breakfast so I have energy and get nutrition. pack hot chocolate so I will stay warm and my thirst will be qwenched. Ware a lot of socks so I stay warm and my toes don't freeze off. And be early so I can go on the trip.

I think that the book will be that Iqbal is in child labour and he is dying inside and he will die in the end of the book. I have another prediction. I think that Iqbal is in slavery and is being treated poorly and he cannot try and not work there anymore.

I think that Iqbal2 will get sick and his parents will abandon him because of his sickness. Iqbal2 will be forced to get a job in Iran to make carpets.

I think this will be about a young kid who is from the age of 10 - 15. And he looks like he has a family that has showed no care for him so they possibly sold him to a company and he is probably held for child labour. I think he tries to stand for his rights to go against child labour.

Iqbal will be the story of a little boy who worked in a carpet factory, and he has to do whatever his ]stupid bosses ask of him if he doesn't want to get thrown out or killed, done, I'm not writing anymore.
