WEDNESDAY: GEOCACHING

Safety First!

Although the summer is fast approaching, we still have over a month to go. This means that you must continue to work hard and stay dedicated to your learning. From this point on, tallies will be handed out on a daily basis as soon as the school day begins. All students who do not complete P.A.R. activities according to what is required will be given tallies. Remember, if you have 5 or more tallies, you will be unable to participate in any year end field trips. I highly suggest some of you go back and complete any P.A.R. activities you have missed.

1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH: No HW

2.) SCIENCE:

Be prepared to create your 'GEOCACHE' with your group in class tomorrow.
If you do not have all the necessary materials, we will not do any GEOCACHING in class.

3.) MATH 6: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.
MATH 7: Complete all pages of your math booklet that was handed out today except for the coordinate grids questions.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you continued working in your picture book groups.
List two things that other people in your group mentioned that pushed your thinking. Explain.
Be sure to provide specific examples.
What did you learn about communicating within a group?
REQUIRED: Ask one student a question about their response.
REQUIRED: Respond to any comments/questions received.

The first thing that pushed my thinking was that the little sheep was luckier then the others. Then me and 2 other people in my group said he's not lucky because he has to serves him food and is looked in a jail sell. Second when Jenna said why didn't they not let him cut there wool and in my mind I thought maybe they couldn't or they'll get killed. I learned that you get more ideas working as a group.

@Goofy, what type of deep thinking did your group demonstrate and you got a few typos in your post such as, "and is looked in a jail" when it should be and is locked up in a jail and, "he's not lucky because he has to serves him food" when I think you mean he's not lucky because he has to serve him food. But good job.

Ryan pushed my thinking by saying that the book has no pros but only cons because in the future his home was a dump. Then someone said he did not care about the Earth and that he is lazy to sort the garbage. I learned that we can find the big idea faster and we can get more written down.

Ryan pushed my thinking by saying that the book has no pros but only cons because in the future his home was a dump and the medicine factories are causing pollution by making smoke. Then someone said he did not care about the Earth and that he is lazy to sort the garbage but he did not know that his home will be a dump. I learned that we can find the big idea faster and we can get more written down.

Ethan mentioned that there might be 2 houses with a twin brother. This made me have a theory that the boys twin went for a walk and the boy went to find him by calling Neville. In the end the mom went to say goodnight to the boys twin, neville. When working in groups I learned you can come up with way more ideas then you did alone and there might be things in the book you didn't notice that they showed which gave you different ideas.

When we got into our novel study groups we mainly had the same opinions but what pushed my thinking was...

1.) Mr. Hong pushed me and my groups thinking when we were telling him about the pro's and cons and how it was mainly focused on cons but then he pushed my thinking when he started saying what if we didn't care about the environment? What would happen how would their be pros?? That got me thinking and then I though well, if the environment was bad then how would we produce the technology without a good environment! I still think there would be pros though we just need to look deeper into what they are!

2.) Lance pushed my thinking when he mentioned that every time they show an image it changes the location and the TIME. That got me thinking about it and how it works. I thought when was this book meant to take place and what year was he going to as, "the future". To be more precise, maybe the book was written in the 1970's and when he travels to the so called "future" that might be 2020. It all depends on how to author tried to put it together. After out group talked about that for some time Kaitlyn noticed how the cover for the book was made in 1990. That however does not tell us when the book was made however, it gives us a clue toward when it was made. For eg. Now with this info we know for sure that Just A Dream was made before 1990 or in 1990.

For example, in one of the thinking and learning questions there was a question where mostly everyone had the same answer. Instead, Shami had his own way of thinking. How? Well, he started out saying a simple answer then he started to deepen his thinking and this is how he pushed my thinking. With this in mind he pushed my thinking we he was making some conncetions, which, I then started to think what is the most important idea in that connection, which leaded to my answer.

For example, if one of the thinking and learning questions it involved a charcter like the pig, she looked at what he was doing in some of the pictures, what was his personality in each picture, and how did this character learn. With this in mind, she pushed my thinking by thinking more about the charcetrs into thinking how I can conncet to this and have an important idea that encourages this. The things that others mentioned that pushed my thinking were:

1.) Mr Hong pushed my thinking by saying that in Tacky The Penguin that there could be different races or different cultures. I thought a lot about how that's exactly like BC. We have different cultures but we are all human just like there are different types of penguins but they are still penguins.

2.) The other person who pushed my thinking was Brooke. She pushed my thinking by saying Tacky did do everything the other penguins did but he put his own spin/twist on it. For example the penguins did graceful dives while Tacky did cannon balls

What I learned about communicating within a group is that it is very challenging because everyone wants to share their ideas at the same time.

One of the people that pushed my thinking was Julio. He said that maybe the kid had a horse named Neville and that the kid had to move and the horse couldn't come. Later the kid started yelling the horses name because he missed it. Then at night time the mom said good night Neville to make the kid feel better about the horse. Another person that pushed my thinking was jessica, she said almost the same thing but instead it was te dad that didn't come because maybe the parents split up.

I learned that everyone sees thing differently and that if you collaborate you can be smarter and make/have better ideas and desicions.

My fellow Every Kindness readers pushed my thinking by talking about family members that died. This conversation got started by Hailey saying that maybe Maya's older sister died. Than me and Connor had connections.

I can't think of a second one because my book is at school and I can't remember. I will do it tomorrow morning.

When we were discussing the book, Connor, Hailey and I had some connections. It started with Hailey saying that maybe Maya's (The main character) big sister died. Than I made a connection by saying that my step cousin (baby) died. This lead on to someone else in the group saying that they have experienced a miscarraige before.

The group also pushed my thinking by thinking of different ways the book had ended. For example, maybe she commited suiside, maybe the family lost money or maybe the author wanted the reader to think of their own ending.

I am unsure who said it but someone said king pig was being a bully. When I think of bullies I think of, when people are being bullied they should stand up for themselves. Which brings me back to when Jenna pushed my thinking, when you don't stand up for yourself, you are not respecting yourself. So, since the sheep didn't stand up for themselves, king pig had to learn the hard way how to get people to like him.

I am unsure who said it but someone said King Pig was being a bully. When I hear the word bully I think of ,when people don't stand up for themselves. What I learned when communicating with others is that, when sharing your thinking with others make you think of something else. Even if it's the same thinking as yours but in diffrent words it could make you think of something else that could push your thinking.

I think that working together was fun because more ideas were formed and pushed your thinking.

Some people had said, " What if Maya's clothes were her former sisters?" Or, " Why is that doll so creepy?" which lead to talking about babies and how they are sometimes killed in a mothers stomach? But ya that's what happened.

My thinking was pushed on the point that the diffrent types of penguins are races and each race has a diffrent point of veiw and a certian point of veiw could help a lot. And Also my thinking was pushed by that being diffrent can be rewarding in the future.

I was not in a group but in the tipping point the things that pushed my thinking was: mavens businessmen and connectors, the law of the few, the stickiness factor and the power of context. I found it amazing that connectors can personally remember hundreds of people and send them all birthday cards Christmas cards or both.

I have not learned much from working in groups recently because I am doing personal assignments so sorry.

Ryan pushed my thinking when he said that are only talks about the cons and not the pros. For example, in his dream it just showed a smoke factory, and his home that was just a dump. Also for question number 6 someone pushed my thinking when they said images can be used as foreshadowing.

My group was reading Neville and we thought of a bunch of theories for the story with clues from the story. Like for example, Julio said that the main character could be from the country side and moved back to the city side and that his horse was named Neville and the boy got sad so he started to call his horse because he missed him. His mom missed Neville too so that's why she said goodnight to Neville at the end.

Another theory is that the boy might have had a twin brother and he started to call out "Neville," which is his brother's name then at the end his mother could have said goodnight to his twin brother since he was sick all day. I think Mr. Potato came up with that.

I learned that other's have different opinions and perspectives of the story that could change or push your thinking into something deeper.

Tacky the Penguin

One thing that was mentioned was something from Mr. Hong. He said to look and it from different cultures. I forget the proper names but it was individual and then a group. After he told us this it pushed my thinking and I started talking about racism which is something I know well because I am doing my speech on it. Then Sean was saying how the hunters that came for the proper penguins were like terrorists and the the penguins were Canadian. He went on about how the Canadians stood their ground and claimed their territory. it is hard to put in words on the website of what he said because it was just so fantastic. By saying this Sean pushed my thinking very far and I have a new look at the book Tacky the Penguin. When communicating with my group I learned that you have to be respectful of other peoples ideas even if you don't agree with them. However, in my group Caleb said something that he thought and everyone disagreed with him and started saying he was stupid for saying that which was not a good thing to do. We are trying to push peoples thinking and let them push ours but instead we pushed his idea away. Another thing was, even if you all have the same ideas still share your ideas and try to dig deeper. This is who pushed my thinking and what I learned about communicating. Who pushed your thinking? What did you learn about communicating?

1.) Firstly, I learned that some people in my group thought the book was about you not getting second chances.
2.) This isn't really an idea but we always were asking each other questions and I think that help the most because it makes you think why? I think think why is one of the best things you can do.

While we were doing our group work I thought the only two people that pushed my thinking just slightly further was Azbo and Tweety Bird. They mentioned how we should keep our earth clean or planet but demonstrated it in a way we would never have thought of it as and Azbo mentioned about the Pros & Cons that it only mentions mostly cons and I think only one or two pros. Like how Tweety Bird said our world should last longer and shouldn't be all full of trash and junk but in a very deep thinking way that could barely be explained and Azbo mentioned the pros and cons when this story should mention more about the pros more than cons and why this kid doesn't respect his future and his environment. He also explained it in a way that was kind of hard to explain. What I learned through talking with my group members was that we should mainly stay on topic and less going off topic, to collaborate and demonstrate more deep thinking and connections and to keep track of where the group is because some of my group members were just socializing and keeping the whole topic off topic and just didn't show any deep thinking. But from the deep thinking it was hard to infer deep ideas that come from the text features and pictures.

The second thing that pushed my thinking was the penguin's are bullies because the penguins are ignoring tacky and just not letting him being him self.

The first person who pushed my thinking was Meagan. She pushed my thinking to make me think that Chloe also changed her thinking when Maya moved away because she realized that you don't always get second chances. The second person to push my thinking was Scott. He made me realize that Maya was persistent because she kept trying to play with Chloe and her friends even though the answer was always no.

1) One person in my group I forget who mentioned that the pig is really mean and rude and that made start t look at it from the pigs perspective. Maybe the pig isnt trying to be mean and is just clueless.

2) Another person in my group mentioned something about how the pig took all of the sheeps wool and left them with nothing and that m,ade me thinnk "Why dont the sheep just say no?"

Hailey pushed my thinking by saying that Maya committed suicide. In the book it said her family moved not Maya.Then Meagan said that her cousin had a younger sister or brother who was dead before they were born. It reminded of my mom because she told me that she had a baby when I wasn't born, and baby died inside of her stomach. I learned that everyone has different perspective. Also each of us can push others thinking and learn from what other say.

Brooke pushed my thinking by saying that the other penguins would run away and do there own thing when tacky would come and I never noticed that until Brooke said that. Sean also pushed my my thinking by saying don't judge others unless you get to know them better or at all. I thought that was a very good point.

Tacky the penguin.

Brooke pushed my thinking by saying that tacky's companions might have been his brothers and sisters or family so i thought that he might have been really sad inside but was too afraid to show and tell his feelings to the others because he thought they would just keep ignoring him and give him dirty looks or something even longer.

mr hong said that their are 2 types of cultures of the world, individuality and collectively (I think)
that kind of relates to the story.

I'm reading Just A Dream and someone who pushed my thinking was Ryan because he said the book showed mostly cons than pros of what could happen if we didn't take care of the planet but it could of showed all the technology that would exist in the future. Another person who pushed my thinking was Lance when he said that you could kind of infer what time each place Walter was going to next by the 2 page pictures. And I learned that when you are communicating in a group it helps a lot because you can get new ideas, opinions, perspectives on the book and when you communicate in a group you are learning a lot more because all of your groups brains combined is smarter than just one.
