The One and Only Ivan

Browse through the photos of my recent visit to the Calgary Zoo. You have learned a lot about certain global issues as you learned more about the different reading strategies. Question 1: Ivan lived in a shopping mall for about twenty-seven years. He was eventually moved to a zoo. Do you believe zoos are good places for animals? Explain your reasoning. Be sure to reply directly to any responses by other students to keep it in the same conversation stream.

I think certain zoos are good because some help the animals but I heard marine land and some places like that harm the animals so they do the tricks so I think certain zoos are good and some are bad

@ Avinash - What if an animal were to stay at a zoo for a prolonged period and was unable to naturally hunt for food. I wonder if it would still be able to survive in the wild?

I think some zoos actually train the animals they make a little sort of obstacle for them so if they are sent back to the wild they will be ready. That what heard at least.

I think zoos are not the right places for animals they belong to the wild and not in a cage. They should be in the out and open not in a confined space. I think that if I was the manager I would make it so they can wonder a bit and not be stuck in one spot. 2 reading strategies I learned is predictions and inferences.

@Princessa Actually in my opinion, most zoos are actually decently big for the animals depending on the number of them but I don't think that there are many zoos with out much area to roam in.

I think animal zoos are cruel places for most animals because if there Is a how at the zoo, they are going to need to make the animal you are trying to train do what you want it to do. There will need to be some sort of consequence if the animal doesn't do what you want it to do. Once the animal realize it gets hurt, it will know that they should listen to the trainer.

In my opinion, I think some zoos are bad, but some are good. Although, this is just my opinion. No one can really know for sure until you investigate. Some zoos may look very caring, but really behind the scenes they could be abusing them by not having enough care for them. Firstly, this zoo, doesn't look very caring in my eyes. It had said the elephant was Asian or African. Isn't it hot there? I saw snow on the ground. Also, the habitat for the elephants and gorillas looked very unnatural. - to be continued!

I couldn't imagine being in their position. Lastly, It looked like they were bored and there wasn't much to their lives. Having millions of photo shoots everyday. So, in the end, I guess every zoo is bad in some way.

T-S- I have been to a zoo before. Although, at the time, I never thought of how the animals feel. After reading the "One and Only Ivan", I have gotten a really good and deep understanding towards this topic.

Question- Was the “One and Only Ivan”, based on a true story? Was it really Ivan the gorilla’s life? If so, it must have been so sad for him to die experiencing all those things that happened.

Great point, Sandy...I, too, was wondering about the elephants living in a domain that is so cold. Hmmm...I wonder what temperatures are okay/optimal for elephants?

I think zoo's are not good places for animals because they should let the animals be free. People should not capture animals just to let visitors come and see them. The people that work at the zoo have to maybe put things that hurt the animals to get the animals to do what thier told.

That is true, we take care of animals when they are sick but the real question is that what caused them to get sick? I really think that we caused it because it is plain logic, we deprive animals form their natural habitat.

Simran thats a good point, but since they're wild animals and were created to hunt and live in the wild, they should? A dog or a cat are house animals so they need someone to care for them, but elephants and gorillas need their freedom as they were built for this.

And also Marianne, you mention that zoos are good because of the space to roam around...look at the size of the gorilla domain again...do you really think it is spacious?

The connection was that since "elephants are people too" i took that in a general form as all animals should also have the right to chose if they want to live in their natural havitat and they should be able to live freely since they are wild animals and desere to roam
around and be the wild animals they are.

I personally think zoos are terrible places for animals to be. If an elephant is from Africa it's used to the hot sun, but when it moved to Calgary where it snows, it gets harder for the elephant to survive. Another reason of why I think zoos are horrible is also because if you think of having tons of space to run around but you're locked in a small cage with up to five gorillas.

@ SpongeBob and Indy - I agree with Spongebob. As an analogy, I am native to the lower mainland and would not be interested in living in Toronto because of how cold it gets there and all the snow they receive in the winter.

#1: I think zoos are a decent place for animals, definently better than the circus but not as good as the wild. A zoo is good because the animals get fed everyday and the cage they are in is really big. It is a good place for humans to make amenze and a fun place for kids to go see animals and watch them play. But a zoo can be bad because the animals are still in a cage and they did have to be captured for them to be there. Plus if some animals don't like bieng around other gorillas have to be because they are in a cage. They also put on shows like in the circus and if they don't like the circus why would they want to put on shows? So really I think zoos are more bad then good but are not horrible.

Zoos help us do research on animals but they should also be able to live freely. Overall we agree with both.

Q: Are zoos good places for animals?

A: It depends, if the animals have been locked away in small cages or are with disrespectful owners, then no, but if the zoo has large open areas with proper healthcare and loving zoo keepers, then yes, as long as the animals are being taken care of then I'm completely fine with it, but for me it all depends on the type of zoo their at.

Q: I have a question, once again it all depends on the place their at, so I'm wondering if all the animals in the pictures are taken care of, or if there are some things the zoo could improve on.

C: My connection is with the elephants in these photos, because it reminds me of how Stella was once in a circus, and all the elephants walking around make me think of how elephants at the circus walk in those big circles.

I think you have a good point, but living in a zoo would probably be very boring. I think that it would be better living in the wild. You wouldnt just see the same things every day. Each day would be something new.

I don't like zoo's because animals belong in wild. The only animals that should be in houses or zoo's is the ones that have been domesticated for years. Zoo's keep animals from places like Africa were it's hot and put them in B.C.were it's cold. All those animals get put in a small place when they should be out in the wild with lots of room to explore. Some animals atack in the zoo because they get annoyed with all the screaming and shouting nd bieing crowded and they just want to be free.

Some zoos are nice to the animals but other zoos just abuse them. At the calgary zoo I saw snow on the ground, I dont think thats good for them because they should really be in the sun or inside.

Why it is bad is because they could be taken care of, wrong or they could of been captured and taken away from their families and home.Also in Ivan's place and time it was a good thing he went to the zoo. And the good thing is that if the animal was in need for help such as it was hurt or something then it would be good if they went to the zoo.
2) a: In the picture of the gorilla on his back he looked very uncomfortable as it looked like he was trying to scratch his back and/or he was trying to get comfortable on the ground.

I think zoo's are better than living in a mall but there still small. The wild goes on for thousands of miles and most zoo domains only go on for about 100-200 feet.The animals if they get to only get a year or two in the wild. Some are born in the zoo and never get to see the wild. Although their better than living in a mall your whole life, it's still not the wild and animals are just like people and deserve to live where they are meant to be and not in some little tiny cage.
Connection 1: I connect to going to the woodland park zoo. The domains were very big. Some were the size of a small park. And sometimes they had a bunch of animals in the same domain. They had little villages that looked like places in Africa and other places. And in one of the villages there's a school house. And in the school house their is a window. Out the window is a giant park with giraffes and zebras and hippos. The domain looks huge and you can barely see the end. This zoo is a good zoo and there is barely any small domains.
Question: Do you think the gorillas and elephants are happy in the domain they live in at the Calgary zoo?

1. Yes because , the zoo would have been a good choice because he was treated more like a animal . He had a better domain it was nice and clean . in the zoo ivan had more animals to communicate with .

2. i think that the gorillas are having fun in their domain like rolling around , roaming around ,jumping around and many more but the pictures close to the end don't look that fun beacuse the gorillas are outside in the cold and there is snow all around the gorillas domain .

1) Do I think that zoos are good places for animals? Yes and no. Yes, because you can see the animals in end place, and if there wasn't zoos, animals would be roaming around the whole world, humans would get hurt and even killed by some dangerous animals. You get to ride and pet them.
And no, because when they first open up a zoo, all the animals have to be tamed first. People whip them with ropes, stab them with sticks, and other horrible stuff. If you've never thought about it carefully, you wouldn't think zoos are good places for animals. I would would go to a zoo, but never support it or be a sponsor. And also, they should be free and they should do anything they want.

In my opinion I don't like zoos because animals aren't aloud to be free in the wild. People are really greedy all they want is people for there shows and money for them. It's cool to see the animals that we don't see every day but you should put yourself in there shoes and see how you feel.

I think that zoos are good places for animals. Firstly, a good zoo has lots of food and things that are normally in that animals environment. Secondly, most zoos are making their animal domains big so the animals don't feel trapped like Ivan did at the mall. Lastly, at zoos they make sure that the animals get treated right and they don't get abused.

I have a connection to the pictures. When it showed the picture of the elephant statue and the statue's leg was plastic instead of metal, it reminded me of how Stella's leg in "The One and Only Ivan" was hurt.

I have a question to the elephants in the zoo. How can Asian elephants live in such a cold and snowy climate? Like, they're called ASIAN elephants, so they should live in Asia.

I believe that zoos are good places for animals to live in because in a zoo animals get three meals as day, are safe and have other animals of their species with them. Also in the wild they have a better chance of dying because there is no safety of the walls or humans at the zoos. Living in the wild would give the animals the life they were meant to live but in a zoo they can live a similar life style with out the risk of dying. The only way to die would be old age. This is why I think zoos are good.

I thought you had a great response and a strong opinion, although I sort of agree and disagree with it at the same time. Yes, zoos help animals live longer because they are more safe but think about the animals for a second. They have so many pictures taken day after day, who knows what they do to animals to make them do tricks, and they only give animals a certain amount of land that they can walk in. I mean, I think any animal would choose risking their lives in the wild, then to be caged in a prison like area. Especially, because many animals get taken away from their families. I don't think any animal should experience that.

Question 1: I'm not so sure that a zoo is a good place for animals but it is definitely better than being stuck in a cage at a mall, a mall isn't a place for animals because they would get abused or mistreated, a zoo on the other hand is better but isn't perfect. Zoos don't abuse animals, they take care of them but still are being used to be seen by people.

Question 2: 2 types of reading strategies I learned are to use T-W and T-M, using these strategies is very different from using T-S because T-S is a self experience, relating things from a book to the real world is very difficult but makes good connections.

I think that it is not good to keep them there because the trainers need to hit the animals if they do anything wrong, and then they need to be in a cage with people staring at them, as we'll as them needing to be nice to other humans.

Question 1- I think that a zoo is not a good place for animals because I think animals should be in the wild were they can go pretty much anywhere but in the zoo animals can only be in that certain area. Also I think animals might like to get there own food like catch there own food and I don't think zoo let them do that.

Q#1 I think the zoo is a horrible place for animals because if you think of it it is like us living in our class for the rest of are life and never leaving I don't think anyone would want to live there. And the animals have to be outside if it is cold snowing raining or freezing.

Also I would probably go nuts in one of those cages in a zoo anseen in the pictures all they have for claiming is these rope things hanging form the roof and they have like no walking space below the straps.

I made a connection to the Calgary zoo because my mom used to live just outside of Calgary. My mom used to go to zoos when she was younger. I don't know if she went to that specific zoo but still. I infer or at least hope that in the future they make zoos bigger and do not force the animals to do shows. I also have a question does anybody know when the Calgary zoo was built?

In my opinion, I think that the zoo is a good and bad place for animals to live in. The zoo is a good place for animals to live in because the animals have a safe shelter to live in but if they were in the wild they could get killed. The zoo is also bad because some of the zoo's might not be treating the animals nicely. The Calgary zoo's habitat for the gorillas looks very unnatural. I think that ceratain zoos are good and some are bad.

A connection that I have is that the elephants look happy and at the end of The One And Only Ivan, Ruby seemed happy at the zoo and so did the other elephant at the Calgary Zoo.

Connection: A text to self connection I had with Ivan was the way Ivan was determined to protect Ruby and to get her out if the circus. My connection was there was a time where I was determined to eve money for a anew bike and I worked hard and I bought it.

A question I had was why did Mack keep Ivan at the zoo when Ivan caused him to pay more money.

I think most zoos just want the money. Every one wants money, they probably don't care about the animals and just want the money. Money drives people to betray there people and every one they love.

Good points, but do you think they would feed the animals 3 times a day or maybe just one. Food costs money too so..... Yes money is important but if all they cared about is money they probably would get a more payed job ( retailer, police officer etc.).

I belive that Zoos are kind of like a Jail cell for animals(some of them)Its much better that what Ivan had to deal with for 27 years.Its super sad he died about 1-2 months ago :(

I think that animals such as Ivan are safer in the zoo though I also think that animals should be in the wild where they belong because if someone takes away your home you wouldnt be happy so thats how Ivans feeling in the book.

Response #1 - In my opinion, I think that zoos are good and bad places for animals. If they just took the animal and put it into a zoo, that to me animal cruelty. Because imagine, you were just sleeping at home and then next thing you know you wake up to see a whole bunch of people watching you that you have never seen before! Not knowing you will probably spend the rest of your life in a cage. Animals belong in the wild. Live free and peacefully. However, if you are in a cage where an animal is trapped at a circus or a mall, some zoos maybe life savers in some cases. For example, some elephant is incredibly in pain. At a zoo there would be veterinarian to help the elephant. Then after, they should release the elephant and put them into the wild.

Response #2 - Some strategies that are good to use while reading are, making connections, and visualizing. If you make connections you will understand the book better and connect with it. When you visualize the book. You can sort of make it like a movie or a T.V. show while you are reading.

Zoo's are not good places for animals, because animals are made to live in the out doors and free. Animals need to learn how to hunt for their own food be with their family. They shouldn't be trapped in a small cage. It's just not fair to them because, for all these years they have to be alone and with nothing to do. :( I connect to the angry gorilla on the bill board because, in "The one and only Ivan" Mack and George put up the bill board that had Ivan with a very angry face. My second connection is that it looks like the zoo keepers don't really care about the animals, since elephants are supposed to be in a warm climate but at the Calgary zoo the elephants were walking around on SNOW!!!!!!!

I think a zoos good and bad because in captivity the animals hove a longer life span because of the less chance of dying it also bad because some animals belong in the wild and some zoos train them to do tricks like when you teach a dog some thing and they do it right you give them a treat or toy but some people like in the one and only Ivan when they teach Ruby to do a trick and when she didn't do it they brought out the claw stick most zoos don't do that. But in overall zoos are good AND bad

I do not agree with zoo's wild animals should be in the wild.The only Zoo's I agree with are the ones that take a badly hurt animal and treat it then once it gets better they set it free into the wild.

Picture the story.picture Ruby and Ivan and Bob.look in your mind to see what Ivan's cage looked and or looks like. Ask questions like were did Ivan live when he was mud?,why did Ivan call his cage a domain for 27 years?

I think that a zoo is better than the mall because a zoo trees and feed there animals properly. Unlike malls that stick there animals in tiny glass cages then people walk pass the cage acting very inappropriately.
I had a connection to the picture of the elephant statue that had a tear on the side of its leg it reminded me of stella.
when i saw the picture of the gorilla lying down it reminded me of when ivan said gorillas are calm animals not vicious.

Q1. I think that zoos aren't a good place for animals because it's really a prison for them because most animals don't have a family in the zoos and it isn't their natural habitat. Like Ivan he didn't really get to explore more in the wild he just had the same life in the zoo day in and day out so if I was Ivan I will feel bored.

@Harveer well in my opinion, there are some zoos that they have a bit of open space to explore and freedom. BUT they may or may not have others in their domain so they may like you said feel bored but they may live a life like they would in the wild.
