Today, students worked on decimal division, learned about space, moon phases, seasons, earth rotations, earth's orbit around the sun, and continued researching about a career of their choice. We are winding down term 2. Students will have their addition/subtraction/multiplication/division test on decimals on Friday.

Today, students moved on from vertical multiplication without decimals to vertical multiplication with decimals. They have learned 2 different strategies for placing decimals in their answers. They have learned how to estimate their answers and place their decimals and how to place their decimals by counting the number of decimal places in their numbers. In Science, students completed a pre-assessment with all the learning intentions from the Space unit. We then built curiosity and questions by watching a few video clips and discussing the size of space and have it just continues to expand.

IMPORTANT: Planners/Agendas will be collected on Thursday for Term 2 assessments for Career Education.

LEARNING PLANNER:

Presentations tomorrow and Friday

It was nice to see that most students completed their presentations! Students engaged in meaningful self/peer-assessments today and gave one another descriptive feedback to improve their work. They made the necessary changes/edits to their slideshows in preparation for the next few days. An example presentation was given to the students and they were told to simply focus on an engaging voice and eye contact when they present. They will be assessed/evaluated as they present.

IMPORTANT: Practice presenting you slideshow at home tonight.

THE HOME STRETCH - INQUIRY PROCESS

Today was a very productive day for the students. Many students are nearly finished their Science slideshows and many students shared out their 'Synthesis - learning statements.' It it always so great to see students learning in different ways using a systematic process. Some students who normally struggle, have been really thriving with the inquiry process. We are all looking forward to seeing the final products when the students share out their learning.

IMPORTANT: If you feel you need more time to work on your Science presentations, please work on it at home.

LEARNING PLANNER:
1.) READING: 30 minutes.

2.) MATH: No homework. We will do some math review tomorrow so you are reading to multiply with decimals. Many students seemed to struggle today with vertical multiplication. So, we must review before moving forward.
3.) SCIENCE:

Continue working on your presentations. It is looking like many students will be finished or close to finished after tomorrow's science block.
Friday, you will be able to put the final touches on your slideshows after completing a self/peer-assessment.
Due to the long weekend, it is likely that you will present either on Wed or Thursday of next week based on how much we complete by the end of the week.
Before the presentations, time will be spent watching an example of how the presentation will look and we will review the presentation criteria so expectations are clear.

4.) CAREER EDUCATION:

In preparation for the next report card, be sure you are using your planners daily. This will not only help you complete your daily work, but it will help you stay organized. Writing down exactly what is written on the board daily will help you achieve more success.

INQUIRY PROJECT EXAMPLES

Students had an opportunity to watch the opening ceremonies to the Winter Olympics that are happening in Italy today. It was a good opportunity for the students to see countries coming together peacefully to compete in sports. In Inquiry, students continued working on their inquiry projects. They are in the final phase (Phase 4: Going Public). We will hopefully finish this assignment up by the end of next week. In math, students starting learning how to subtract decimals by lining the numbers up and regrouping.

IMPORTANT: Here are some examples of what your inquiry slideshow could look like. You can model yours after these.

LEARNING PLANNER:
1.) READING: 30 minutes

2.) MATH: Complete all 4 subtraction worksheets and mark with answer keys. Show all your work. For decimal subtraction, you must show your estimate.

3.) SCIENCE: You may work on your slides for your presentations from home. You will have 2-3 more classes to work on this. Look at the examples above and the criteria sheet to guide you.

4.) CAREERS: Complete the question from your booklet with your parents.

Today, students continued working on adding decimals and using estimates to place the decimals in their answers. We will move onto subtracting decimals tomorrow. In career education, students continued diving into their exploration into career clusters.

Today, students showed they had a good understanding of comparing decimals. So, we moved onto adding decimals by lining up place values. Students learned how to make estimates by rounding up or down and then how to place decimals based on their estimates. In Career education, students continued their career survey and ranked different values according to the level of importance to each student.

IMPORTANT: Use your planner on a daily basis.

Today, students learned how to compare decimals with different decimal places. They just finished learning about standard form, word form, and expanded form. In the coming days, students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals. In Science, students learned how to organize their notes, thoughts, and information and where to record this information down. Students are just finishing up Phase 3 (Coalesce).

IMPORTANT: Keep up with Mathletics if you don't have any homework.

Students have started their decimals unit. They are currently learning about place value and how to read numbers correctly. In Science, they are moving onto the 'GOING PUBLIC' phase on Thursday and we should finish up next week sometime and then we will start our unit on Space. Tomorrow, we will be heading to Rev's Bowling alley in Burnaby. Please ensure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Bring a lunch or purchase lunch at the bowling alley. The Inquiry Process

Today, students had their final 'INVESTIGATE' phase of the inquiry process. Tomorrow, they will begin 'PHASE 3' where they will 'COALESCE' their research in preparation for 'PHASE 4 - Going public. I have been happy with everyone's progress and ability to use their skills to research their 'BIG QUESTIONS'. Keep up the good work! You have all be very motivated to learn and research because you chose your topics and questions. Keep it up! In math, we continued working on equivalent fractions and comparing using benchmarks.

Today, we did a check-in quiz on what the students have been learning about in our Fractions unit. Students showed their learning on comparing fractions and comparing fractions from least to greatest. In addition to this, they showed their ability to covert mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa. Students are quite proficient right now with the 'INVESTIGATE' phase of the inquiry process. Their typical inquiry period looks like this:

1.) Gather materials and meet with their knowledge building circles
2.) Review daily expectations
3.) Set their daily work plan
4.) Research and document findings
5.) Share learning with their knowledge building circles
6.) Self-assess daily learning
We will likely move onto the next phase of the inquiry process later next week - 'Coalesce' phase. Students will then evaluate and synthesize their research to put into a short learning presentation in the final stage of 'Going Public'.

Today, students continued to practice converting improper fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa. We also did some review for our math quiz coming up this Friday on everything covered since last week. In Science, students continue to make progress with their inquiries. IN Career education, we learned about fake news and how to tell the difference between trust worthy information and information that is not trustworthy.

Today, students learned more about improper fractions and mixed numbers. This built on their mathematical inquiry they completed in their groups on Friday where they investigated how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. In Science, students continued their research for their science inquiries. They focused on their main questions and came up with more questions and found excellent information.
