This is Mr. Collins creating my first post on the classroom website!
Today we had a Social Studies lesson on our worldviews, that focused on our personal beliefs, values, and experiences, and how it all contributes to the way we see the world. We continued our read aloud with The Boundless, and completed the Word Work test from last week.
Did anyone rise to Mr. Hong's challenge in PE today?

IMPORTANT: Any students who have not yet handed in their field trip forms, please do so tomorrow.

1.) SOCIAL STUDIES: Please make sure the Our Worldviews, and Ownership pages are completed from the worksheet this morning.

2.) POST A RESPONSE: In the spirit of our Student Led Conferences this week, please provide an example each of the following:

A time where you worked really hard to complete something for school that was difficult to do (PERSEVERED)
A piece of work that you are Proud of (PRIDE)
Something for school that you've improved on (IMPROVEMENT)
Something that shows your process of learning (PROCESS)
A piece of work that is one of your favourites (FAVOURITE)
Something that you have done for school that you are proud of, but isn't necessarily on paper (INVISIBLE PRIDE)

Think hard about your own response, and edit and revise for the givens (spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.)

Using Integer Chips to learn the zero principle

Today, you could hear the busy brains of our Gr. 6 and Gr. 7 students. They were buzzing as they had two major assignments to hand in today. They submitted their Novel Approach work for their first picture book. In addition to this, they submitted their poetry work. Both assignments will be assessed and feedback will be given in order to prepare for the next stage of their learning. Students will review descriptive feedback from their teachers in order to produce even higher quality work next week. They will receive an evaluation on the work that follows the assignments that were submitted today.

IMPORTANT: Log into to your FRESHGRADE and respond to any comments. Many of you have not yet uploaded links for your POETRY and POWERFUL RESPONSES.

1.) WORDWORK TEST ON MONDAY:

Quiz on Monday (spelling and definitions)
gorge, churn, jounce, precipice, dignitaries, taper, tether, contour, indignant, pantaloons, aspirations, urchin,
satirical, surveyor, crag, spindly.

2.) MATH:

Complete any unfinished work. Assignment sheets will be posted this evening.
Must be marked and corrected at home. Any misunderstandings will be addressed at the beginning of class on Monday.
Reviewing 'ADDING INTEGERS USING THE ZERO PRINCIPLE'
Mr. Collins will check your homework on Monday and it will be posted to FreshGrade.

3.) LA: (PAST DUE)

A few students must complete their work by Monday or you will receive an INCOMPLETE.
Novel Approach work (Picture book, stickies, booklets, and powerful response.
Poetry (10 poems and 2 tables completed on criteria sheet)

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Practice using the wordwork words in sentences here.
Get creative and write a story or simply write out 16 different sentences using the words.

Today was another productive day of learning at Laurier. We made progress on our powerful response writes and our poetry projects. Both of which are due tomorrow to receive feedback. Over the weekend, you will receive feedback from both of us. You will use this feedback to improve your work on your second picture book that you will start next week and to choose your 3 top poems for next week. You have a PAR holiday today! Work on your assignments!

Powerful Response Writing

Today was a wonderful day of learning. Students took ownership of their learning throughout their day. They focused on learning intentions, followed criteria for their work, and were receptive to feedback to push their learning forward. Mr. Collins and I were happy to see that they are using what they have learned in term 1 and 2 to push their learning forward in the final term.

IMPORTANT: Please pay your $8 through the school website for next Friday's field trip. Also, please return the signed form tomorrow.

Go to Division 1's website (CLICK) and write a response to one or more of their PARS. Wait for them to complete their responses today before posting.
Agree or disagree with their ideas, add to their thinking, ask some question to help them improve their PAR. Be respectful and supportive always.
Post who you responded to in Division in 1 here when you are finished you PAR. Let's respond to everyone from Mr. Fisher's class!

Belief Systems

Today, you participated in one of your final book club discussions for your first picture book. We reviewed learning intentions for the gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and the powerful responses that you will be writing. You will be given some examples of these responses in class tomorrow to guide your writing.

1.) POETRY: Due on Friday.

Based on Mr. Collins and Mrs. Chohan's Social Studies lesson today, write a paragraph on the following questions:

What are beliefs? How do they influence us?

In paragraph form (intro, body, and conclusion), respond to the 2 questions above.
Ask one student a questions about their paragraph(s).
Edit/revise based on a self-assessment of the above and the givens (spelling, grammar, capitals, punctuation, sentence structure, etc).

Spring has Sprung!

Today, Mr. Collins started his long practicum. he will be gradually increasing the number of hours he will be teaching over the next 10 weeks. He is an integral part of your learning and you are lucky to have him as one of your teachers. Get ready for some amazing learning experiences! Mr. Collins is full of energy and exciting ideas!

IMPORTANT: Parents and Students, please sign up for a 30 minute time slot on April 10th or 11th. Student led conferences will be held next week. If you are unable to make it, please let me know

1.) POETRY: Continue working on your poetry. We are aiming to complete your first drafts by Friday at the latest. Tables must also be completed.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this video of 'HARRY POTTER" rapping the lyrics of Alphabet Aerobics.
Based on what you saw and heard, what are two poetic devices he used in the song? Click here to see the typed out lyrics.
Use two poetic devices and create a rap song based on the letters of your name. For example, if your name is SAM, you will have 3 lines of poetry/rap. The majority of the words on each line should start with the letter of your name. LINE 1 - S LINE 2 - A LINE 3 - M. Model it after the alphabet aerobics.
If you are feeling incredibly adventurous, create new lyrics for the Alphabet Aerobics. Do you think you can do this? (OPTIONAL)
