Clean Up!

5/31/2019

Today, the students kicked off the day by completing a survey, reflecting on their time and learning throughout the year. They continued to work on their powerful responses until recess, after which they started on the final steps towards wrapping up the French unit by planning a Pizza Recipe Video! After lunch, most of the grade 7s visited Churchill to better understand the school, while everybody else stayed behind and continued working on their Photography before doing a general clean of the classroom.

1.) Math:

Complete the questions on page 3 and 4 of this first worksheet.
Graph the lines on this second worksheet, and check and correct your answers (answers attached)
Use any of the methods that we discussed in class to find these lines. If you prefer finding the line using a table, absolutely use it. Whichever method works for you.
If you prefer the physical copy, both of these worksheets were handed out in class.

2.) French:

Complete your pizza recipes, ready to use for Monday!
If you need to start from scratch:
- Take a look at these ingredients, and try to build a pizza recipe that includes your favourites.
- Your recipe should look like these ones from last day, use similar language (in french), and be organised the same way (ingredients, directions).

3.) Socials:

Socials Inquiries will be due on Tuesday.
Be sure to complete your role in the assignment.
Check all yours and your partners' work against the criteria to make sure that your work is extending!

4.) Book Club:

Powerful responses are due on Monday!
Be sure to respond to the feedback you received today, continue to provide feedback to your peers, and compare your work to the criteria!

5.) Photography:

Continue to look for the letters of your name in other places!
Take pictures with whichever device you have available (yes, even Huawei, Daniel) and upload them to your 'Name' document.
Write a brief (3-5 sentences) note to describe the reasons you chose the pictures you chose, the photography skills you used to take it, and what the picture makes you think of.
Refer to the criteria to make sure you aren't missing anything.

6.) Science 6:

Your Glogs will be due this Tuesday!

7.) Post a Response:

Post a thoughtful comment on why you are so glad that there is a PAR Holiday this weekend.
Be sure to give your peers feedback on the givens, and update your post to make improvements.

YEAR-END LEARNING SURVEY

Today, the class started their day with a Photography class, going outside with the iPads taking pictures of everyday items that they feel represent them. We spent a little bit of time on Book Clubs before recess, and then spent the hour from 11 - 12 on a Digital Citizenship workshop learning about how to protect ourselves from different forms of harassment online. After lunch, we continued with graphing lines, and our Social Studies inquiries into religion.

CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES!

Crystalline structures

Today, the students started with a lesson on highjump in PE. We launched a photography project, where students will use the composition strategies that they have been learning in the unit to try to create a collage that spells their name. Everyone got a chance to practice their Cartesian coordinates and ordered pairs through some drawing games (connecting dots) and strategy games (Battleship). At the end of the day, the grade 7s unlocked some secrets to their Crystaline structures, while the 6s presented and provided feedback on the star stories that they have been studying for the past couple weeks. These presentations went great! At the end of the day, the social studies groups got together to focus on and plan their religion projects.

Continue working on your religion inquiry assignments. The due date is coming up early next week, so make sure to have your end-goal in mind!

3.) SCIENCE 6:

Continue to work on your Glogster final projects.
Find as much fair use, creative commons, and public domain media as you can that helps you make your point to have visitors come to your extreme environment in space.

Complete and upload all handouts for experiment #2 (day 1 observations, day 2 observations, hypothesis statements, conclusions, and images of crystal structure.

Remember, we will be using these recipes to make our own pizzas, but we only have a limited selection of toppings. Be mindful of what kind of pizza you want to make.

PARTICLE THEORY OF MATTER AND CRYSTALS

Particle Theory of Matter

Today, half of the class was at the district track and field meet at Churchill. The rest of the class worked on Book Club until recess, starting to focus in on their Powerful Responses. After recess, the class started on their recipes for Pizzas in French! The students will later use these to make their own pizzas next week. Next came math, where the students started on the Cartesian Plane, and how to plot points. After lunch, the grade 7 students engaged in a science experiment to help them understand the particle theory of matter in terms of saturated/supersaturated solutions and crystallisation, while the grade 6 students continued their research and presentation of Extreme Environments in Space. At the end of the day, the students worked on their Social Studies inquiries to wrap things up. From the sounds of it, we had some winners in our class and at our school! Go Laurier! Well, done track team!

BC Place!

5/27/2019

Today, Divisions 1 & 2 went to BC Place with Mr. Collins and Ms. Chohan to compete in a soccer tournament for the whole day! Students played soccer against other schools, for several hours; took part in fun activities; and ate Subway, all provided for the event. In the end, our class even got a trophy! Make sure you all continue to drink plenty of water. We had a long walk there in the sun, and a long walk back.

IMPORTANT:

All students competing in track tomorrow should be in the gym, in gear, ready to begin no later than 8:45. Good luck track!
There will be no Ultimate practice tomorrow.
We still need baby pictures for the Grade 7 graduation slide show from the following people: Adrian, Anita, Ben, Harmon, Kevin, Olivia, Victoria, and Wendy

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

The wonderful Mr. Collins!

Today, Mr. Collins took the Grade 6 students to the Planetarium and Mr. Hong stayed with the Grade 7 students. The Grade 7s started the day off with our S.O.A.R. assembly and Fitness Friday! We are so lucky to have Ms. Capit at our school. She is a professional hip hop dancer and we have learned so much from her. After recess, we engaged in our book clubs and worked on our Social Studies Inquiry Projects. In the afternoon, we had a lesson on composition, reviewed some criteria for well composed photos and continued our lesson on rule of 1/3's and perspective/leading lines. Students uploaded their practice images to a Google Slideshow for more ongoing feedback and to document their work.

IMPORTANT:

FIELD TRIP ON MONDAY:
- All students should be at the school, ready by 8:00am
- Lunch will be provided by subway and compass cards will be provided for bus fare.
- Dress in athletic wear as we will be playing soccer against many other elementary schools at B.C. Place for the entire day. Division 1 and 2 will split up into 7 or 8 teams.
- If you haven't brought in your forms, you will not be able to participate if you don't return it on Monday morning. (Dennis, Logan, Kevin, and Daniel)

Make changes to your post based on the feedback that your peers give you.

ANIMAL FARM

Today, the class took a trip to Granville Island to watch Animal Farm being performed at the Waterfront Theatre! After this, we went to the market, had some snacks, had some fun at a water park, and then took a long walk along the seawall on our way back. It was a great day, filled with sun, stories, and adventure!

All students should be up to date with their group schedule, and be ready to start writing their powerful responses next week!

Continue to work on your inquiries, and think about how you can start shaping your projects around your questions.

Today we had a wonderful day in the sun, and a great showing of Animal Farm:

- There are many lessons that we can learn from this play, what is one lesson that stuck with you after seeing it?

EARTH BITES

5/22/2019

Today, Ms. Buss did a great job teaching you in Mr. Collins' absence. The teacher candidates were all sent to different schools today to participate in a 'TOC DAY'. Mr. Collins will be back tomorrow to accompany us on the field trip to Granville island. In the morning, students harvested some crops from the garden with EarthBites. Later, they continued learning about space, chemistry, and inquiring into the origins of belief systems. We are looking forward to seeing what the students produce in about 2 weeks time.

IMPORTANT:

It was nice to hear about your long weekends. Many of you were able to get out with your families to enjoy the beautiful weather. Today the students kicked off the day with a Social Studies Inquiry, learning more and sharing about their religions-of-study! We put together a pizza using our instructing language in French, and started to learn more about 'balancing' equations in Algebra. In the Afternoon, the students worked and shared in their book clubs groups, and continued their work in science.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

Today, we had sports day! The students spent the whole day active, going through activities, running relays, and competing in their teams! After lunch, the students showed off their school and team spirits, by competing with their well-prepared cheers, and a Tug-of-War with the other classes. The teachers and grade 9's of Churchill even joined in to compete! Today was a great day outside, with plenty of activity and team spirit!

IMPORTANT: We have two field trips (3 for the grade 6s) in the next two weeks, and we must have the field trip forms in by Tuesday at the latest for students to attend.

Today, the students jumped further into photography and learned about "filling the frame" and the "Rule of Thirds," taking some beautiful photos in the process. The students finished up their work in teams building their Cheers with Mr. Fisher's class, just in time for Sports day tomorrow! Before lunch, we learnt more about linear relations, and how to write algebraic expressions based on some word problems, and in the afternoon, the students continued their work on Spheros to make some simple games.

IMPORTANT:
- Gr. 6 students return Planetarium forms
- All students return camping forms and pay online

1.) ART:

Each student should add at least 2 examples of "The Rule of Thirds" on their shared photography document.
These can be pictures that you find online, but at least one must be taken, yourself.

Be prepared to discuss your books, any Gift of Words, and any Thinking and Learning questions by the time you check in with your group on Tuesday.

The "Rule of Thirds" in photography isn't a law, its a strong suggestion, because artists have found that people really like pictures that follow this rule.

Learning about the Muslim faith w/ Mrs. Jivraj

Today, students had their first 'NOVEL APPROACH' book club (Novel 1). They engaged in rich conversations with Mr. Collins and Mrs. Chohan. Later, they worked on their sports day cheers and learned more about patterns in algebra. They were lucky to have another guest speaker, Mrs. Jivraj, speak to them about Islam. She shared her knowledge and her presentation was followed by a Q & A session. Asking good thinking questions is a key component of the learning process.

IMPORTANT:

- You must include an engaging hook and conclusion.
- Check to make sure you have included everything listed above.

Today, the class started the day with a game of Everybody-is-it-tag, and then moved on to sprinting techniques in Gym Class. The class practiced their skills at French by interpreting a French Menu (price and all) and practiced asking and responding to questions about the menu. Mr. Collins taught the students algebra in the afternoon. He started by teaching them some basic math terms and then moved onto patterns. Boy what a day!

Last week we had a Pastor come in to speak to our classes about the experience of being Christian, and what it means to be Christian. This week (tomorrow) we will have our very own Ms. Jivraj come in to discuss her experience as a Muslim, and what it means to be Muslim.

Happy Mother's Day!

Today, the students finished their work on their (spoilers) Mother's Day gifts! They spent the morning writing and gluing to make their gifts perfect! We hope you enjoy them, Moms! After lunch, we had a guest speaker in to talk to the class about Christianity, and what it is like to be a Christian. This is the first in a series of speakers for different religions to help the students with their inquiry projects.

IMPORTANT: For all grade 6s wishing to go on the upcoming Planetarium Field Trip, please make sure that you have turned in the field trip form ASAP. We still need a number of Parent-volunteer drivers (for both classes), or else we may not be able to go!

1.) MATH:

Get started on the What do you think questions on pg 375, we will discuss these next class!

2.) CHEER:

Continue to think about and work on your cheers, and see if you can add anything to what your group already has!

3.) FRENCH:

Be sure that your French Order Forms (the grid from last class) is complete, as they will be collected at the beginning of next class.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today we had a visitor in our class to talk about Christianity and what it is like to be a Christian. You had the opportunity to ask questions to help guide your learning through your inquiries, and filled out exit slips to confirm a few things they learnt.
What did you learn from our speaker?
How will you use this for your inquiries (regardless of which religion you are studying)?
If you are learning about a different religion, what did you learn about Christianity that you might want to compare to Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, or Islam?
Provide feedback to your peers, and let them know if they gave you an idea for your inquiry.
