Mr. Redican't last day is next Friday!

Today, was another exciting day at K.B. Woodward. Division 2 got another new student! That means that in the last three weeks two new students have joined division 2 - Khushi, and Selena :-). The students had a math assessment at the beginning of the day and most students finished early, meaning they knew the answer to most of the questions. Hip-hip hooray for this! The students were extremely well behaved today and because of this got to go outside 10 minutes early to play basketball, soccer, or manhunt.

Research Skills

Today, students started learning about the 3 phases of sprinting. They collaborated with partners to figure out what those three phases were. They presented their learning with short demonstrations of the 3 phases and brief explanations of the sprinting technique. With track & field season ahead of us, it is important we work on our running form and structure in order to do the best that we can to improve. Click here to read a little bit more about the 3 phases.

Answer these questions in addition to posting your own opinion about it.

   2.) Is the message biased at all? How do you know?
   3.) Are there any positive things that will come about the Trans Mountain Expansion Project?
4.) What do you know or think Kinder Morgan does that is negative and wasn't discussed in the
     video?
   5.) Who will benefit from this project? How do you think they will benefit? Explain using at least 3
supporting details from the video.

A Novel Approach - Visible Thinking

Today, Mr. Hong was extremely excited to get started on the picture books with you for stage 2 of the Novel Approach. We reviewed expectations, the learning process, learning intentions, the structure of the book clubs, and then you started reading your books while working on your visible thinking (sticky notes). I look forward to seeing you use everything you have learned this year to create your powerful response at the end of your book club!

Today, we reviewed your reading strategies to remind you of what you needed to do for your visible thinking (sticky notes) in your picture books.
Which reading strategies do you regularly use when trying to find the big ideas? You have learned 7 in total (purpose, monitor comprehension, determine what's important, inferences, synthesizing and evaulating to get the big idea)
Do we use all of these strategies all the time? Explain in one or two sentences.
List all the strategies you use regularly.
How do you use them? Give some examples.
Comment on at least one other student's post. Give them some feedback on the givens: spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure.

Today, the class started to do self evaluations on their writing workshop pieces of writing. Every student in the class will be contributing a piece of their writing to a class book that will be distributed to every class member. The students writing has grown immensely over the last few months and their ability to create powerful pieces of writing has become very impressive. The students are using good leads, interesting hooks, powerful verbs and nouns, and are using strong focus in their writing.

1) MATH

Write your L.R. on FreshGrade.
The questions you have to answer are:
- 1) What did you learn about triangles and quadrilaterals?
- 2) Did you meet the learning intentions?
- 3) Did you learn anything else other than the intended learning intention?

Finish the first page of your "Kinder Morgan Pipeline Project."

Today in class we continued to discuss the Kinder Morgan Pipeline.
One of the cons about the pipeline that the students brought up was about the potential for an oil spill.
Watch the video about Exxon Valdez and answer the following questions:
- 1) What is the video about?
- 2) Who do you think paid to clean up the oil spill?
- 3) How would you decide what the cost of the clean up is?
- 4)Can you make any connections between this video and the Kinder Morgan Pipeline?

THE DEBATE CONTINUES - THE PROS AND CONS OF THE KINDER MORGAN PIPELINE.

The sound of children laughing filled the halls of K.B. Woodward again today, as spring break was over. The students dove back into their work in math, writing and social studies. In social studies the students started to narrow down their inquiry questions to ONE really good inquiry question. The students really enjoyed working in groups and came up with many very insightful observations about the Kinder Morgan Pipeline. Over the coming days the students will be investigating their inquiry question and producing a piece of work that shows their findings.

Share your Google doc with Mr. Redican and/or Mr.Hong.
You're Google doc should include the following:
- a minimum of 30 questions
- 5 good inquiry questions (that fall in the green zone of the Q-chart)

SPRING BREAK

#MysterySkype with Mr. Redican

Today was another fun day at K.B. Woodward! The students took part in a "Mystery Skype' with another class from Surrey. The excitement in the room was great and the students were very engaged. The students lots of really good general questions and they slowly managed to narrow down the location of the other class. All the practice paid off and they will be well prepared for asking and receiving questions during their future careers.

Have a great spring break!

1.) MATH:

Finish your "Finding the Area of Irregular Shapes" worksheet.
Don't forget to show all your work.
You have two weeks to complete this.
All of your math assessments are loaded onto Fresh Grade.
Go to Fresh Grade and answer the following questions for your learning reflection:

   2.) Did you meet the learning intentions?
   3.) Did you learn anything else other than the intended learning intention?
   4.) What did you enjoy?

The Mystery Skype was a success!
All of the students acted in a respectful and considerate manner.

A good inquiry question is one that cannot be Googled. A question with a yes/no response is not considered an inquiry question.

DREAM BIG AT SCIENCE WORLD

IMAX - Dream Big

Today the class went on a field tip to Science World! The students enjoyed the trip immensely and were very well behaved. During the trip the students worked together to invent "air machines." The instructor at Science World said she had never see a more creative group of students and that is partially due to the students practice "sciencing" this year. The students also had free time to explore Science World and watched a very interesting movie named "Dream Big."

Tomorrow is the last day before Spring Break! Lets have a party! Can every student please bring some food to share with the class? Mr. Hong and Mr. Redican are bringing some delicious food :).

Remember the formula for finding the area of a triangle is Area = (Base x Height) / 2.
In your Math Focus textbook (page 204) complete questions 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,13.
This is due on Friday.

You will have more time to work on this tomorrow.

Science World was a great reminder about how much fun science should be.
We had lots of free time to run around and check out all the different stations at Science World.

SCIENCE WORLD FIELD TRIP TOMORROW - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Today in class the students saw a video about the Kinder Morgan Pipeline. As a class we discussed the pros and cons about this project. The students made many observations about the project and as groups they started to come up with "good inquiry questions." The students were shown the Q-chart and learned that "good inquiry questions" start with the word: why would..., why might..., why will..., how would..., how might..., or how will...For example; why would people protests a pipeline that will make Canada money?

WE NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Please email Mr. Hong directly at [email protected] or at [email protected] to let me know if your parents can come along tomorrow. If we don't get enough volunteers, we may have to cancel the trip. BE IN CLASS BY 8:20am tomorrow morning. We will leave the school for Science World at 8:30am!

Today we continued our talk on the difference between gender, sex, and sexuality.
The students showed that they are able to think critically by presenting many different opinions and views.

Remember questions have to be ON TOPIC.

We watched two videos today about the Kinder Morgan Pipeline. Many people are for this project and many people are against it. One of the arguments against this project is that in contributes to global climate change.
What do you think about Climate Change?

CANADA'S MOST OUTSTANDING PRINCIPAL

Canada's Outstanding Principal #Morelli

A hush fell over the crowd. All the students at K.B. Woodward were perfectly silent. Suddenly, Mr. Morelli swung open the door and to his surprise the entire school started clapping their hands and yelling his name. "YEAH!!!!" The students screamed. Mr. Morelli was genuinely thankful for the surprise assembly and his delight was there for everyone to see. The students of division two were very well behaved during the assembly and this showed great maturity and leadership from all of the students. Over the course of the year the students of division two have shown great improvement in their ability to act respectfully during assemblies.

Today the class talked about the difference between gender, sex, and sexuallity.
For the most part students acted maturely and asked very good questions.
The students also watched a video about a world where being straight (heterosexual) was not the norm.
This video dealt with themes of stereotyping, bullying, and sexual identity.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Mr. Morelli was genuinely surprised today. The staff and students did an amazing job of keeping this secret from him. Everyone in the school contributed something to this event: blowing up balloons, video recording, helping to clean up, etc.
Think of a time you've been a part of a team working towards a goal and describe it (Maybe it's making dinner with your family).
What was the event?
How did you contribute?
How did it feel to be a part of a team?
Answer in full and complete sentences and in paragraph form.

MEATLOAF - CREATING INQUIRY QUESTIONS

Where does meatloaf come from? Who made the first meatloaf? Is meatloaf made with bread? These are three examples of the approximately 35 questions that the students came up with about meatloaf. This exercise was designed to get the students ready for their case study project. Good case study projects only work with good inquiry questions and the students excelled at at coming up with many types of questions. With more practice, they will be creating amazing inquiry questions in no time!
IMPORTANT:

If you have a 3 zone bus pass, you only need to bring $18 with your permission slip .
PERMISSION FORMS ARE DUE!

Finish your worksheet on finding the area of parallelograms.

Today in socials we talked about creating good inquiry questions.
Go through your group document and do the following:
1) Questions that can be answered with a yes or no (e.g. is meatloaf good?). – highlight these questions in red.
2) Questions that can be answered in less than 10 words – highlight these answers in yellow.
3) Questions that would take many words to write – highlight these in green
The green questions are the ones that make good Inquiry questions!

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

We didn't get a chance to do "community building" today in class, so our PAR be our community building for the day.
The question is: "what is the best piece of advice you've ever received?" "Why?"
Answer in complete sentences.

EGG DROP CHALLENGE 2017

Mr. Redican taught you all how to apply what you learned in Science to design and create a contraption that would help your egg survive a 20-25 ft drop. Click here to see a video of one lucky egg who will Iive to see another day......until someone cooks it for breakfast. You all learned through trial and error through the design process to see what worked and what didn't work. The self/peer/teacher assessment and feedback process helped you improve on your designs. Hopefully, all of your eggs survived the 'EGG DROP CHALLENGE'.

IMPORTANT:

If you have a 3 zone bus pass, you only need to bring $18 with your permission slip on Monday.
Return all forms/money by Monday please.

YOU MUST BRING YOUR SELF-ASSESSMENT RUBRIC TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY. YOU WILL COMPLETE YOUR FINAL SELF-ASSESSMENT IN CLASS AND THEN WE WILL UPLOAD THEM TO FRESHGRADE.

Today the class worked on finding the area of irregular shapes. As a class we used our problem solving abilities to figure out how to dissect shapes into squares and rectangles and then find the total area of these shapes. In groups, the students started creating their own shapes on the floor by using masking tape, rulers, and protractors. Tomorrow groups will starting find the area of other groups shapes and see if they can get the correct answers.

Play the math games that were posted yesterday.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Continue working on improving your powerful response based on the criteria/rubric.
Look for more feedback this evening. Tomorrow will be your final opportunity to improve your powerful response.
If you can figure it out, please log into FreshGrade and link up your Powerful Response document to the 'READING/WRITING' assessment on FreshGrade. Do this as a link so only people with the link can see it. You can simply copy and paste the web address of your powerful response to FreshGrade.
This will allow your parents to see it. Make sure it is on 'COMMENT ONLY' only and not 'VIEW ONLY'.
Ask questions here if anything is unclear.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Remember the formulas for finding the area of squares and rectangles.
Area of a rectangle = L x W
Area of a square = S x S
Now find the area of your bedroom or another room in your house.
You don't have to use a ruler - you can use your feet or hands, or body, or anything else.
Remember that answers are always in squared units (for example: 26 hands squared.)
Share your answer and in three sentences explain your process for finding your answer.
Spelling an grammar always matter.

Can you find Ali????

The world is a big place, and during our career lesson today students were picking countries to research. They were finding out all sorts of interesting information. Did you know Japan's national food isn't Sushi!? Do you know what it is? Continue researching your country and don't forget to keep your country a SECRET! You're other classmates will be guessing what your country is tomorrow.
