FINAL STRETCH

Tomorrow is our last day of learning before the two week break. Let's finish off strong by completing all assignments that are due or incomplete. Check your FreshGrade to ensure all learning artifacts, assignments, tests, projects, etc have been uploaded and learning reflections have been posted. You will receive the items to upload to FreshGrade in class tomorrow so you can upload them. Let's finish this term strong everyone!

IMPORTANT: You must have your picture books, completed picture book packages, and maps of Beijing at school tomorrow. You must have all materials updated on FreshGrade by the end of the day tomorrow or you will need to stay after school.

Mrs. Altman's Powerful Women Project

Today, students reviewed basketball rules and skills during PE. Later, students drew inspiration for their poetry projects by watching Shane Koyczan's 'To This Day Project'. They listened to his slam poetry and learned how emotional poetry can be when you draw on personal experiences and background knowledge. It was clear by the temperature of the class that everyone was making deep connections to what Shane said in his poetry.

Today, students were given an extension until Friday to complete their scale/ratio/proportion mapping activity. They have all been working incredibly hard and diligently on their mapping assignments. It is always great when we can combine different subject areas in one assignment. This one covers learning intentions from language arts, math, social studies, and ADST. In the teaching world, we call this a cross-curricular assignment. Although you were given an extension, don't use this as an excuse to put off completing it.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

For those students who did not complete their GIFT OF WORDS and THINKING AND LEARNING questions, Mr. Fisher and I will check your work tomorrow morning. If it is not complete, we will be contacting your parents. You must support your group and complete what is expected of you. This work was due yesterday.
Book Clubs will continue tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

This Friday, Mr. Fisher and I will present certificates to the students of Div 1 and 2.
Watch this 1 minute video.
In paragraph form, nominate one student from your class for a valid reason. Take this seriously. Silly nominations will not be accepted.
In your paragraph, you must provide evidence and support for why you are nominating this person. Give an example of why this person deserves a certificate.
Some certificates we will be giving out include awards of excellence for: homework, PAR, SOARing behaviour, kindness, respectful, etc.
If you support someone's nomination, feel free to also reply to a nomination with further support/evidence.

POETRY

Students have been working hard on their poetry projects. We reviewed the learning intentions again this morning in addition to the criteria. Students were introduced to a different way to self and peer assess. They will complete this learning process once everyone has completed their poems and are ready for feedback. We have a busy week. We will complete our China maps, Novel Approach picture books, and the read aloud of Fish in a Tree. #TheLearningNeverEverStops

Chapter 34 illustrates how Keisha, Albert, and Ally support each other through their problems.
How does their reaction to Ally’s secret help her?
In chapter 35, how could the substitute teacher have done a better job with Ally’s assignment?
Do you think Mr. Daniels really betrayed her? Why or why not?
Ally says she trusts Mr. Daniels at the end of chapter 37. What do you think her trust means to him? What did he do earlier in the chapter to show he cares about her and her trust?
REQUIRED: Ask one student a questions about their response. Respond to any questions you receive.

CAMPING FORMS

Today, students continued working on their maps and on their Novel Approach picture book packages. Between recess and lunch, students participated in their respective science challenges. Grade 6's completed the coin tower challenge and Grade 7's tried to prove that electricity and magnetism were related. Later in the afternoon, students were lucky to watch an interactive and engaging performance by 'West My Friend'. Click here to watch one of their recent movie videos. We are going full speed until next Friday and have much learning to get through. Stay focused and be diligent with your work.

IMPORTANT: Bring your camp forms and pay your money online.

1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Picture Book packages must be completed (This includes the gift of words/powerful phrases, and thinking and learning questions).
The 'WHO PUSHED MY THINKING' sections will be completed in class on Monday. The graphic organizer at the back of the packages will also be completed in class on Monday/Tuesday.
Book clubs will be modelled and practiced on Monday.

Today, students started the day off with an ADST class with Mr. Collins. Students learned how to collaborate with their peers to reduce the amount of code they were using to perform certain tasks. Later, students engaged in Science Inquiry. The Grade 7 students learned about electricity and how it is related to magnetism and the Grade 6 students learned more about Newton's laws. The Grade 6 students completed the coin tower challenge and related it to Newton's laws. All Gr. 6 students were determined to complete the bonus challenge, although, they will need more time to inquire tomorrow.

Continue working on your map if you took it home. We are aiming for it to be due this coming Wednesday.

In paragraph form, answer the following questions:

Why are functions useful for simplifying your code?
How do they relate to expressing and explaining yourself or giving instructions/directions to people?

Vaping and Addictions

Today, students continued reading through their picture books in preparation for their book club discussions. Tomorrow, they will receive their picture book packages and will complete them over the next few days. On Monday, they will engage in book club discussions with their group members in order to deepen their understanding of their books. They will use their visible thinking, thinking and learning questions, gift of words, blogging, and book club discussions to help them find the big idea of their stories. They will use this to write a powerful response.

2.) SOCIALS/MAPPING: Continue working on your map if you took it home today. We are aiming to finish this by Friday.

Today, students started the day off with a very informative presentation by our guest presenters. Two nursing students from BCIT volunteered their time to share their knowledge about the negative effects of vaping on the human body. It was a great presentation and we all learned a lot. Later, students were given their first picture books for a Novel Approach. They started writing down their 'VISIBLE THINKING' on stickies in their books. Tomorrow, they will start on the picture book packages.

In Chapters 20 - 23, Ally explains the difference between being alone and lonely.
Write a paragraph explaining what your interpretation of what she said was.
Also, in your supporting sentences/example, describe a time that you felt each of these feelings.
Self-assess your paragraph for the following: hook, supporting sentences/evidence/examples, conclusion, and that you have answered the above questions.
Edit/revise based on your self-assessment.

c.) Give an example of part of a poem that you really like and a reason why you like it.
d.) Type out a maximum of 4 lines from the poem you chose to support your example.
e.) Conclusion
REQUIRED:

Do a self-assessment to see if you completed the criteria above. Write a short reflection after your paragraph indicating if there was anything you missed or anything that can be improved upon in your paragraph.

This week was a busy week. Students learn a great deal in math on how to calculate percentages in preparation for their decimals/percent unit test this coming Monday. Don't forget to do the review work, mark, and correct it at home so you are ready for your test. In addition to this, students worked hard on their scale/ratio/proportion mapping assignment and self-assessments. They identified areas of strengths and stretches in order to find ways to improve for the final map of Beijing. Have a wonderful weekend!
