ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Today was a powerful and emotional day. Students watched several videos produced by CBC about reconciliation. Yesterday, students completed a post a response that clearly showed their understanding of reconciliation. In addition to this, we read a picture book in class about how Orange Shirt Day came to be. Students completed a 'visible thinking' activity during this time to share their thoughts and connections. We learned a lot about the truth and what steps we can do to honour those who didn't survive the residential schools and how we can help with reconciliation.
IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS: Ask your child about what they learned this week about reconciliation.

PLANNER:
1.) MATH: Pg. 6 Questions #1-11 MARK WITH THE ANSWER KEY AT THE BACK OF THE TEXTBOOK (from home).

2.) LA/READING: Read for 30 minutes and log on your 'READ TO SELF' logs. Completed sheets will earn 'HONG' bucks next week.

3.) LA/WRITING: If you didn't finish your letter to Mr. Hong on Wednesday, finish it for tomorrow!

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today is Orange Shirt Day. It is a day that the government now calls National Truth and Reconciliation Day.
Review some of the videos posted below to refresh your memory.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can share my understanding about 'Orange Shirt Day'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro/body/conclusion)
2.) In your paragraph, include at least 3 things you learned yesterday about:
a.) How Orange Shirt Day came to be
b.) What the girl experienced
c.) And how as Canadians, we can do better for future generations
3.) Conventions/Givens: Check your paragraph for spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence
structure, and punctuation.
4.) Self-assessment: After your paragraph, post a sentence stating if you have met the
above criteria. If you haven't, state what you need to change.
5.) Peer-assessment: Give one other student who hasn't received feedback yet, 2 things to
improve on their paragraph. BE SPECIFIC.
6.) REVISED VERSION: After your self/peer assessment, post a 'REVISED' version as a
reply to your original paragraph. Don't forget to write (REVISED) at beginning to indicate it
is your revised version.

NATIONAL TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION DAY

Tomorrow is National Truth and Reconciliation Day. It is the first time in Canada's history that this will be a national holiday to remember and respect things that have happened in Canada's past. We are not proud of some of the horrible things that our government did in the past, but this is something that will help many First Nations' families start to heal. To honour the children who died at the residential schools, please do your part and wear an orange shirt tomorrow! Don't forget to watch this video for an explanation of what reconciliation is.

IMPORTANT:
1.) ORANGE SHIRT DAY: Please wear an orange shirt tomorrow.
2.) FORMS: Return any forms you have not yet submitted.
3.) HOODIES: If you have not confirmed your hoodie information, tomorrow is the last day. Also, please click here to pay for your hoodie.

PLANNER:
1.) LA/READING: Read for 30 minutes and log in your 'READ TO SELF' log.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Tomorrow is a day to remember the children who lost their lives at the residential schools. This is the first step in acknowledging, remember, and respecting those families that were effected.
REQUIRED: Watch this video on 'What is Reconciliation?'

LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a paragraph (intro/body/conclusion) on what reconciliation is.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro/body/conclusion)
2.) Explain what 'reconciliation is' based on your background knowledge and the posted
video.
3.) In your body, explain at least 2-3 points that help explain what reconciliation is. Include
examples from the video.
4.) Check for the givens (spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure)
5.) Self-assessment - After you write your paragraph, check your work with the criteria
above and write one single sentence indicating if you met or didn't meet the criteria. If
you didn't, state what you forgot to do.
6.) Peer-assessments will be done in class tomorrow.

Today was full of excitement from the sound of the morning bell! Students entered the classroom anticipating Ronnie Baker's virtual visit! We reviewed the behavioural expectations for guest visitors and the criteria was clear. Students were extremely excited, however, they were very self-regulated during the entire presentation. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us and we will never forget the wise words he shared with us about his journey to the olympics. He shared how he set his goals and worked hard to achieve them! Tomorrow, we will be setting our learning goals for the school year!

IMPORTANT:
1.) HOODIES: Go to Friday's website post and have your parents figure out what size hoodie you need. Tomorrow is the deadline.

2.) FORMS: Return all personal information forms, handouts, and immunizations forms signed by your parents.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

  sentences/details.

We are all looking forward to our virtual visit from RONNIE BAKER on Monday. He will tell you about his journey to the Olympics and a little bit about himself. Today, we learned much about him in class. Be sure to watch more of his races over the weekend and have some questions ready for him! We will be limited in how many questions we will be able to ask, but some of you will have an opportunity to ask him about his journey as a professional track and field athlete! Make sure you are ready to listen and learn about his journey to the olympics!

Today, students continued learning about digital citizenship. We reviewed the meaning of 'digital dossier/digital footprint' and how we must always be aware of our privacy and safety online. Later, we continued setting our classroom expectations by co-creating 'C-CHARTS' together for self-regulation. We had a 4 question quiz to check for understanding of basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). In the afternoon, we had PE and also had a pre-assessment on reading strategies. Students were introduced to the 'NOVEL APPROACH' which is how they will learn how to read this year. SELF-ASSESSMENT

Today, students reviewed the federal election results and learned about digital citizenship in the morning. After recess, students continued working through their review 'MATH FACTS' booklets. After lunch, they learned more about the BIG 6 learning principles and completed their first assessment using their recent 'ART - NAME CARD' assignments. Students identified 2 areas where they improved their work and also assessed their work using the co-created success criteria. They will upload this to FreshGrade this week, Parents, you will receive a 'FRESHGRADE - DIGITAL PORTFOLIO' form tomorrow. Please sign it and return it to school on Thursday.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Read everything below and follow the instructions carefully.
2.) Do not post anything on the class website. You should be ready by the end of the week once we have learned more about digital citizenship.

Today, you brainstormed the key ideas that were part of most of the political party platforms during Elections 2021. You also watched this 'REVIEW VIDEO' in class that sparked a class discussion.

ELECTIONS CANADA

9/16/2021

Today, students started the day with a paragraph writing assessment. Later, students continued learning about politics, government, and the voting process. Students learned about the importance of various parties being represented in the government so all citizens are represented. We also had a chance to watch the highlights of the political debate that occurred this past week. On Monday, students will visit our polling station that we set up and will vote for the party the most support based on what they learn at school. It will be interesting to see how their vote aligns with the actual vote.

STUDENT VOTE 2021

Today, students had a busy day of learning. Not only did they get to learn about healthy eating and living with 'Earth Bites', but students also participated in the Young Actor's Workshop in the afternoon. Students stepped out of the comfort zones to learn about acting. At the end of the day, students used what they learned over the past week to make an informed decision for our mock vote! It will be interesting to see how their votes align with the actual election!
IMPORTANT:
1.) Read the welcome back letter with your parents if you didn't get a chance to do this last week.
2.) Talk about who you voted for with your parents tonight and tell them why you voted for the specific party you chose.
3.) Tell your parents about what you did with 'Earthbites' and the 'Young Actor's' workshop.
