Happy Halloween from 'THE INCREDIBLES'

Today, we were lucky to have a visit from 'THE INCREDIBLES' and a random unicorn. Students enjoyed the costume parade in the morning, scary stories after recess, and a Autumn Halloween celebration after lunch. Thank you to all students who were able to contribute to our potluck. You have a PAR HOLIDAY today, however, I want all of you to make sure you have a safe Halloween today. Don't forget about staying safe and the message the Vancouver Police Department gave you.

Halloween STEM challenge!

Today, you participated in a STEM Challenge with our Division 9 buddies! Your challenge was to create a structure out of Halloween candies and toothpicks. Many of you learned the base of your structure needed to be the most solid part of your creations. You used science, technology, engineering, and math to design your structures! You also helped your little buddies document the learning on FreshGrade.

IMPORTANT:

MONITORING COMPREHENSION

Monitoring Comprehension

Today, the students learned a new reading strategy. They learned how to 'MONITOR COMPREHENSION'. Click here for a list of the reading strategies the students will be learning this year. They learned they can stop & think, reread, slow down, read ahead, read out loud, look at text features, identify sources of confusion, get more background knowledge, ask questions, or talk to a friend/parent/sibling/or teacher. All of which can help them understand something they are unsure of. Students will build on each of these strategies to become proficient 'READERS'.

Be Where Your Feet are

Today, the students were privileged to have an opportunity to learn about African culture from Jacky Essombe. She shared part of her culture from the country of Cameroon. Students learned a song and several different dance moves. They were able to keep with the rhythm to create a very rhythmical song and dance. Here is a link to Shakira's version of this song that was made to celebrate World Cup Soccer. Click here to see what the students did on Friday!

Two days ago, we read 'BE WHERE YOUR FEET ARE'.
Using your 'VOICE', tell your parents what you think the 'BIG IDEA' or message of both the video and book are.
This book had a message that is similar to the message from today's posted video.
Write a standard paragraph or mini-essay on what 'Mindfulness' or 'Being Present' means to you.
Include an intro, body/supporting sentences and examples, and a conclusion.

Today, we received our first post card from a student in Pennsylvania. Through social media, we have had many opportunities to connect with students from across the globe. So far, we have connected with students from several areas of the U.S.A. and from Sweden. Click here to read the responses from some of these students. Div 1 and 2 students, feel free to add to this Padlet if another student has asked a question. The Global Read Aloud has helped us learn from others.

Complete your Word Work assignment for tomorrow. BE SURE TO HIGHLIGHT or CHANGE THE COLOUR OF THE WORDS from the list in your story.
Follow instructions on this Google Slideshow and add to your slide.
Quiz tomorrow on spelling, definitions, and word usage.

Post descriptive feedback for them on today's PAR.

Tell Your Parents About the Book!

Yesterday, we finished our personal mini-inquiries. Today, we dove right into the 'IMMERSE' phase of our new Social Studies Inquiries. Students built their background knowledge by learning about human rights (Gr. 6) and early humans (Gr. 7). Then they 'IMMERSED' themselves by taking notes, brainstorming ideas, and writing down question that they may be interested in researching. (BLURB TO BE UPDATED)

MYSTERY GOOGLE HANGOUT

Mystery Google Hangout

Today, we did a lot of learning! So much that Mr. Fisher and I were still very excited at the end of the day because it was so amazing! We had a unique opportunity to connect with a class from the U.S.A (Frankfort, Illinois) by having a Mystery Google Hangout with them! It was amazing to see how powerful technology can me in our learning. We learned questioning, geography, communication, and collaboration skills. Learning together is extremely powerful. it is important to learn and hear different perspectives to have a better understanding of a topic. Later in the day, we wrapped up our mini-inquiry unit and ended it with an amazing cheer! "When we inquire, we're on fire! The Learning Never Stops!"

Amal Unbound Sociogram

Today, the students were engaged deep in their learning during Physical and Health Education during our Gymnastics class. They engaged in self/peer assessment of their abilities and skills. Later, the Gr. 7 students completed 2 sections of the FSA's. They will be writing more of the FSA later this week. During the global read aloud, we discussed many different topics and themes that have come up. We have posted a Padlet board here for the students to respond to questions.

Complete pg. 84, 85, 80, and 75-76 if you did not complete this in class.

2.) FRENCH:

Colour your french t-shirts for tomorrow. Feel free to cut it out as well.

VOTING

I voted in the civic elections!

Most students don't know this, but teachers actually go to school on professional development days to learn. Like you, we are lifelong learners. We enjoy learning and being curious. We use what we learn on pro-d days to improve the learning in our classes. This past Friday, Mr. Fisher and I gave a workshop to other teachers about how you all learn in your classes. We not only shared our learning with them, but we learned from the other teachers as well. #TheLearningNeverStops

1.) MATH: Any unfinished work.

2.) FRESHGRADE:

Log into your FreshGrade and make any updates as necessary. (Reflections, responding to comments, uploading work, etc).
Of course your learning reflection criteria should be based on the criteria you created in class. Click here to review the post about learning reflections.

Watch this video. We will do an activity with this tomorrow morning.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Yesterday, I voted in the Vancouver city civic elections. I voted for who I believe will do a good job running our city, parks, and schools.
Click on this link and read through some of the common issues that come up during election time. This will give you some background knowledge and information that will be useful for your paragraph.
Talk to your parents and ask them why they think it is important to vote.
In paragraph form (intro/topic sentence, body/supporting sentences and examples, conclusion), explain why you believe citizens should vote in all elections?
Include at least 2 examples in the body of your paragraph explaining why voting is important.
Give one student a suggestion for improvement.

MATHEMATICAL CAKES

Today, students were excited to learn the 'CAKE' method. Not only did they have 'GOOD TIME WITH PRIMES', but they enjoyed learning about the different ingredients that go into making a multi-layer GCF/LCM cake! We enjoyed the delicious numbers that came out of this recipe! In the afternoon, students presented their inquiries in different classrooms. This step was the 'GO PUBLIC' phase and the teachers were all extremely pleased with the learning that was presented!

JACKSON POLLOCK AND ZONES OF REGULATION

Today, the students used the Zones of Regulation to articulate their social-emotional states through Jackson Pollock inspired artwork. The students of division 1 and 2 collaborated to create a large 'ART BY NUMBER' piece that fits together like a puzzle. Click on the image to the left to see how it all took place. Learning how to recognize and express how you are feeling and learning strategies to deal with your emotions is incredibly important and helps with self-regulation. The students will continue building on their social-emotional learning throughout the school year. #TheLearningNeverStops

WE HAD A KAHOOT!

In the morning, we had more Passion Project presentations. This was followed by gymnastics for PE. It is really amazing to watch how all of you have improved your flexibility, balance, and acrobatic abilities. We had a big 'KA-HOOT' after recess! We started the read aloud with a fun activity that helped the students think and review the different characters from Amal Unbound! It was interesting to see how energetic everyone was while they were thinking about their responses. Learning is always fun and #TheLearningNeverStops!

IMPORTANT: Wear clothing/shoes you don't mind getting paint on tomorrow. We will be doing our Jackson Pollock Action Splatter Painting in the morning.

THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS

Today, the students were deeply engaged in their learning. They had time to update their digital portfolios on FreshGrade by uploading their learning artifacts for their passion projects. Throughout this project, students followed learning intentions and success criteria. They asked themselves deep questions to find their passions. In addition to this, they engaged deeply in the self and peer assessment process to improve their creations. This step took the greatest amount of time because they gave and responded to descriptive feedback according to student created criteria. This is how the students will learn this year. Parents, please help facilitate this process at home as well. Students will complete their learning reflections in class on Monday.

1.) MATH: Here is the secret birthday cake method we discussed in class (GCF)

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES: You should work on making sure your inquiry notebooks and handouts are up to date. You will be 'GOING PUBLIC' next week!

3.) SCIENCE: Assuming everyone has uploaded all the required documents, your Science evaluations will be finalized by Monday morning. You will complete your learning reflections in class on Monday.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Read this learning reflection closely. It meets the criteria for a quality learning reflection. One of your classmates wrote this on FreshGrade (slightly revised):
'On my pretest, I got 4/16 because the words were all new to me. I knew that I needed to improve because most of the words were new to me. So, I decided to practice and review the words each day. As a result, I got 16/16 on my final test, which is great! That means that I learned a lot over the week. I can clearly see that practice and hard work helped me improve! I met the learning intention by following the success criteria because I reached the learning intention. I can spell the words, understand the definitions, and I also know how to use them in “juicy” sentences. I improved by reading the words and copying them a few times. I also memorized the definitions (even when we didn’t have it on the test). This allowed me to fully understand the words and how to use them. I can improve next time by writing more sentences to deepen my understanding further. Learning these words are helping me understand what Amal Unbound is all about. That’s how important and effective practice word work is!
List 3-5 criteria points you think should be required on all learning reflections based on what you read above.
Explain why you chose these points.
We will edit/revise what you came up with in class based on this weekend's PAR.

THE NOVEL APPROACH - VISIBLE THINKING ACTIVITIES

The Novel Approach - Visible Thinking

This morning, the students had their second Novel Approach lesson on 'Using background knowledge to make connections'. We modelled the visible thinking activity to the students using Green Day song lyrics. The students then completed their visible thinking activity using 'Remember Me' from the movie CoCo.

Later, the students in division 1 and 2 engaged in more self-assessment activities. All students reflected on learning intentions and success criteria to self-assess their Plant I.D. Projects. Click here for the handout. It was a busy day of 'LEARNING' on your path to ownership.
