Tuesday: School is out for Summer!!!!!!

Today was the final day of SUMMER LEARNING! The students were full of energy today and were excited to share their autobiography presentations with their classmates. We learned a lot from one another and the students sure did display how creative they could be with the different platforms they used. Students used Animoto, Google Presentation, iMovie, etc.

Monday: OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

Today, Mr. Richardson and I decided to teach the students outside! We grabbed our desks and chairs and set up our classroom on the grass! The students loved being out in the sun and they enjoyed being closer to nature and further away from the stereotypical classroom setting. They were given the choice of where they could learn and they chose the outdoors.....until the heat became too much!

2.) MATH: Complete page one of the long division worksheet. Be sure to show all your work. You may use your multiplication table

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Many of you made deep connections today when you found out that Auggie's dog passed away.
Use the motions/feelings you felt and your personal connections to this event and write a short paragraph.
Put yourself in Auggie's shoes and explain what was going on in his head during this emotional event. Use descriptive words and be sure to explain how he was feeling.

Friday: Multiplication Tables

Today, the students reinforced their multiplication abilities by working through a multiplication table and then working on some practice questions that Mr. Richardson provided. They found it quite useful to be able to see the quotients visually by lining up the numbers in each of their equations.

1.) MATH: Complete the backside of yesterday's worksheet.

2.) LANGUAGE ARTS: Complete both blue handouts (Reading Strategies/Literary Elements)

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

If you could choose any job that requires mathematical skills, which job would it be and why?
Provide examples and details to support your answer.
Read the directions carefully.

Thursday: Plots and Conflicts

Today, the students continued learning about the different elements of a story. They reviewed setting and plot. They also dove deeper and learned about the components of the plot curve and the different types of conflicts that exist in a story.

1.) MATH: Complete page 1 if you haven't already done so.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

We focused on 'CONFLICTS' today and learned about the different types (IE Person vs person, person vs self, person vs nature, and person vs society).
Choose a book that you have read and give an example of each type of conflict. If you can't think of another book you've read, feel free to base your response on the book, "WONDER."

Wednesday: Multiplication with Multiple Digits

Today, the students started practicing and reinforcing their multiplication skills. Many students worked on their basic multiplication tables and students who were more comfortable with multiplication continued working on carrying their tens over to the next column.

1.) MATH: Complete both sides of worksheet (pg 374 and 375)

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Today, we spent a great deal of time brainstorming what it means to be a good listener.
Post a response explaining why you think it is important to have good listening skills based on the ideas we brainstormed in class. Be sure to explain in detail and support your points with some examples.

Tuesday: READING POWER - INFERENCES

Always protect yourself against harmful UV rays.

Today, the students learned about the power of inferences based on facts they already know. The students were able to relate it to the predictions they did earlier last week and were able to distinguish the difference between the two.

The students are really starting to understand how to regroup/borrow when they are doing their subtraction questions. Some students continued using the manipulatives, while others chose to do everything by hand.

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

In your own words, how did the base ten blocks help you improve your addition and subtraction skills? (HINT: Think about the learning intentions - Regrouping, borrowing, etc).

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

You learned about inferences today. You learned that an inference is based on evidence/facts and reasoning.
What can you infer the weather will be like tomorrow? (HINT: Remember to provide evidence/facts as to why you made your inference. Back up your inference with some details and support!)

3.) MATH: Complete all worksheets if you haven't done so already!

Monday: Subtraction with Digital Manipulatives - REGROUPING and BORROWING

Today, the students worked with digital manipulatives to practice their subtraction skills. Using base ten blocks is a very visual way for students to not only see the different place values, but also to visualize carrying groups of tens over to the next place value. Trading up and trading down helps students grasp the regrouping concept. In addition to this, the students had a lot of fun airplaying their work and presenting their learning to the class!

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Post one powerful quote from 'WONDER" and explain why you found it to be powerful.
Post one connection you had from today's read aloud and explain in detail what the event from the book is and what event you are connecting it to. Give a good explanation!

FRIDAY: ADDITION COCKROACH!

Today, the students worked with the iPads to create their autobiographical trailers using iMovie. They learned how to use their voices and oral language skills to clearly present information about themselves.

In LA, the students also continued working on their Reading Power Reading Strategies!

In Math, the students continued working on adding with 2 and 3 digit numbers. They were engaged in a game of 'ADDITION COCKROACH' in the gymnasium with Mr. Richardson's class.

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Today, we read about how Auggie really enjoyed Halloween.
Why do you think he enjoys it the most out of any holiday or special occassion?
Comment as if you were Auggie.
Put yourself in his shoes and try to feel what he goes through on a daily basis. Explain using descriptive words.

THURSDAY: DIGITAL MANIPULATIVES

Today, the students continued learning about reading strategies and making deeper connections to the story, "WONDER."

Also, the students reinforced their addition skills by using digital base ten blocks to better visualize the addition process and carrying tens over to the next place value.

1.) MATH 7: Complete only pg 1 of the double-sided worksheet. SHOW ALL YOUR WORK! DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR! If you can, use the base-ten blocks app on your mobile device!

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about 'PRECEPTS' (rules) during the read aloud of the novel, "WONDER."
Find a quote that is a good motto or saying to live by. (RESEARCH ONLINE) Post it here and comment on some that your classmates post.
Alternatively, you can use a precept/rule that you already live by if you have one.

WEDNESDAY: READING STRATEGIES (PREDICTIONS/CONNECTIONS)

7/3/2013

Today, the students reviewed, discussed, and worked on improving their blog responses from the previous day. They checked their original responses against the criteria generated in class for additing details (IE Who, what, why, where, when, and how). In addition to LA, they worked on basic addition in Math.

1.) NAME CARDS: Complete your name cards by colouring it. These are due tomorrow.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Post your predictions for the novel, "WONDER."
Be sure to include only the information you wrote down before listening to Mr. Hong and Mr. Richardson read the story to you.
Do not add any information you learned from the read aloud. You will not get a better mark for having a prediction that is 100% correct. It is all about generating ideas from clues.

3.) IMPORTANT: Be sure to have your parents return the personal information forms tomorrow!

SUMMER SCHOOl DAY 1: READING STRATEGIES (CONNECTIONS)

Today, the students learned about making connections. More specifically, we reviewed text to text, text to self, text to world, and text to media connections. All of the students were familiar with the learning language and just needed a bit of review. In addition to this, the students worked on creating name cards with descriptive adjectives and pictures that CONNECTED their personalities, with their names.

1.) HOMEWORK: Colour your name card for tomorrow.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Choose one of the different types of connections you learned about today and give one detailed example of a book you read and an event/something that you connected to. Be sure to be as descriptive as possible and include as many details as possible.
