Camp Latona

Tomorrow, we will be having a meeting during the school day with all division 1 and 2 students to discuss the camping trip. We will be leaving early on Wednesday morning to head to Camp Latona. If you or your parents have any questions about the trip, please have them post here. We will give you each paper copies at the meeting tomorrow.

IMPORTANT: Zarif and Nick be sure to return your camp forms tomorrow.

1.) ART:

Pencil sketch image, digitally fine-lined image, and collage are all due tomorrow.
They must all be airdropped to Mr. Hong.
They must all be uploaded to FreshGrade.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Novels must be returned tomorrow.
Powerful responses must be submitted on FreshGrade by tomorrow.
Be sure to share your link on FreshGrade and make it accessible for me to evaluate.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Post any questions you have about the camping trip here.
Keep in mind, the cabin groups area what they are. Use your social skills and treat each other with respect. Don't throw 'SHADE' on anyone. ;-)

CAMP LATONA CABIN SURVEY

Today, we started the day by learning from our special guest from @KidsCoding. Sam taught you about coding and how to use the micro-bits to program a computer. Later, you continued working on your pencil to pixels project and Novel Approach. Victoria kindly shared her expertise with the class by showing you how to use the digital tools in the IBIS PAINT app.

1.) ART:

First digital draft due tomorrow.
Final draft due on Tuesday.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Read for at least an hour.
Powerful responses due on Tuesday.
4 Examples of how you used at least 4 different reading strategies. This must be included inside your powerful response. You must state where you used it and how it helped you learn.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

HOLIDAY - WORK ON YOUR ASSIGNMENTS!
Work on your pencil to pixel art.
Finish reading your novels as soon as possible!

PENCIL TO PIXELS

Pencil to Pixels

Today, students made progress on their pencil to pixel project and their Novel Approach work. Although the school year is winding down to a close, the learning is not. The students also finished off their learning summary conferences. Students will have a few more opportunities to improve on their learning activities. The learning never stops at Laurier, not even after the last day of school. Every day is a learning experience for all of us. Keep learning and working hard! S.O.A.R. like an eagle who is flapping his or her wings high in the sky!

1.) ART:

If you have a mobile device (android or ioS), download the ibis Paint X app.
Play around with this app by taking a picture of your drawing and inserting it into the app.
Try out some of the tools/functions.
See if you can figure out how to fine-line your pencil drawing within the app using a fine-lining tool.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Read for 45 - 60 minutes.
Continue making note of all strategies you have used and how it helped you with your understanding of the story.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this song and listen to the lyrics.
Use your 'NOVEL APPROACH' reading/strategies to help you understand the meaning of this song.
Write a 'POWERFUL RESPONSE' on the big idea of this song in paragraph form.
What is the message?
Don't forget to back it up with specific examples from the lyrics/song.
Ask one or two students a question about their powerful response.
Edit/Revise your work.

DEVELOPING SUCCESS

DO THE DAB WHEN YOU SHOTPUT!

Yesterday, we co-created criteria for our pencil to pixel project. We later put it into a rubric so students could make sure they included all the required components. They spent some time today hand drawing their self-portraits and tomorrow, they will start digitizing their images into 'PIXELS'. They worked alongside their criteria sheet to ensure they completed everything properly. They are all aiming for the 'EXTENDING' column on their rubrics. We also completed

1.) MATH: No HW

2.) LA:

Read your novel for 30-45 minutes.
Complete visible thinking for all reading strategies as you read your novel.
Click here for a list of all strategies. Keep in mind, when you submit your powerful response, you must also submit how each strategy helped you understand what you were reading.
Novels must be finished by Monday. Powerful Responses and Strategies due on Tuesday.

3.) ART:

Complete your self-portrait. DUE TOMORROW (in pencil).

HOLIDAY!
Read as much of your novel as possible and do your Novel Approach work.

Shot Put

Today, we started the day off by learning 3 different shot putting techniques. Students learned the importance of their stance, the push off, and the moment they release the shot put. Combining all three things proved to be challenging. However, with some descriptive feedback, students were able to improve their shot putting form/technique. Later, students reviewed the past year of learning on FreshGrade and completed a self-assessment of their abilities. We will meet later this week to have 1-on-1 conferences for the end of the year.

IMPORTANT: Many of you have note yet paid for your Granville island field trip. Have your parents go online to update your fees. Thanks in advance!

Today, you learned more about digital citizenship. We watched a few videos and had a class discussion and Q & A period to answer your questions.

REFLECTIONS

Today was a busy day of finishing up your projects and assignments for Mr. Collins. They must all be submitted today in order to be evaluated. It is possible you will receive an incomplete if you do not submit your work to Mr. Collins. In addition to this, you also worked on your deep learning reflections for your recent learning activities. Reflecting on where you started and where you ended up after your lessons is a key component of your learning.

IMPORTANT: Bring some snacks/drinks to share in the afternoon to say farewell to Mr. Collins. If you have any kind words and 'SOMETHING ELSE' to give him tomorrow, please do so! ;-) PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION TO HIM TOMORROW! (HINT HINT, WINK WINK, NUDGE NUDGE!)

Tomorrow will be Mr. Collins last day teaching you this year.
Write a paragraph on today's PAR, thanking him for teaching you.
Include at least one memorable example of something he taught you that you are thankful for.
Make it meaningful so Mr. Collins knows how much you appreciate how he's helped you learn this year!
You will share what you wrote with him in class tomorrow.

Earthbites Celebration

Today, the students worked on their French/ADST videos, by sorting through their footage and creating and informative video on how to make pizza using only French phrases. Later in the afternoon, students wrapped up their EarthBites experience with an Earthbites Celebration and a presentation on inclusivity. Students increased their background knowledge and it will definitely help them navigate the real world with a more inclusive nature!

IMPORTANT: â€‹1.) Mr. Collins will be with us until Friday! 2.) This is the last chance for the following students to send in their 3 photos (baby, child, now) for the grad slideshow: Adrian, Anita, Benedict, Kevin, Olivia, Victoria, Wendy. Send these to [email protected] as soon as possible, or we will be sending in our own photos of you.

â€‹1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Physically return all novels to Mr. Hong/Mr. Collins. Make sure we mark it on FreshGrade.
If you haven't handed in your NA booklets, be sure to do that ASAP. They are now overdue.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Social Studies projects are now overdue!
If any part of your project is in digital form (final project or Inquiry booklets) post a link to FreshGrade so Mr. Collins can view it.
Please complete this form as a self-reflection on your project

3.) SCIENCE 6: Glogster projects are due today. Post a shared link to your project on

Today was a fun-filled day of learning. Students started the day off with French/ADST. They used practical French phrases and vocabulary to create pizzas from scratch. Mr. Collins taught the students how to use these phrases to make recipes and instructions on how to make them. The students then used iMovie to create learning videos. Later in the afternoon, students continued learning with food with EearthBites! They learned how to make 'WOW BUTTER' from scratch.
