WEDNESDAY: ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

Today we started the day by working on our Ancient Civilization projects. We wrote about our chosen society's environment, economy, government etc. We also had the mid-chapter quiz in math, and persuasive essay writing in the afternoon. Some of us finished out first drafts.

MATH 7: No HW.

2.) LA: Continue working on your essay and share what you have completed so far with Mr. Hong (only if you haven't already shared it with me - GOOGLE DRIVE)

TUESDAY: GROUTING COMPLETED

Today we had an art-filled day of grouting our tiles! Almost all of us finished the project by grouting, smoothing it out, wiping off excess grout, and polishing the tiles. We completed the learning intention of using tiles, a framed mirror, thinset and grout to make a creative and colourful tiled mosaic. We all had tons of fun doing this art activity. Thanks to the grade 6/7 teachers for coming up with the idea and making it happen!

MATH 7: Mid-chapter quiz tomorrow. Complete the mid-chapter review and mark it with the answers in the back of your textbook.

MONDAY: Body Paragraph Structure

Today, students reviewed body paragraph structure. Students shared good examples and ones that needed improvement. All students were able to tell the difference between a concrete detail (solid) or a wishy washy one that would not persuade anyone. The structure that was reviewed included:

a.) Topic sentences
b.) Transition words
c.) Supporting sentences (examples, quotes, statistics, research, etc) followed by 2-3 sentences - commentary)
d.) Concluding Sentences

Tomorrow, we will incorporate one more section into your body paragraphs for your persuasive essays that was not discussed today.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Complete 4.4 of your textbooks.

2.) SOCIALS:

Decide on an ancient civilization you want to research.
Keep track of any good sources you find (Google Drive - Ancient Civilization Research dil).
Use the Google Drive research toolbar to keep track of your soured.

3.) POST A RESPONSE / LA:

Make sure you have posted the following on your persuasive essay file on your Google Drives.
Most recent introductory paragraph (from website), topic sentences, 2 types of supporting sentences (not the actual sentences, just the type) and a concluding sentence.
If you have already written your supporting sentences, you are more than welcome to post that as well.
It is very important that you work on your Google Drive and then copy and paste your work here.
Comment and give some constructive feedback to at least one other student and make edits/revisions if feedback is given to you.
Feedback should only be given on topic sentences and concluding sentences only.

REFLECTING ON HIS LEARNING

BLURB TO BE UPDATED BY THE STUDENT EDITOR.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Worksheet 4.4 and Pg 165, # 1,4, 9, and 10.
Mark all questions with the answers in the back of your
textbook before Monday.

2.) ART: If you want any colour in your mosaics, bring some coloured tiles to school tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Write a concluding paragraph for your persuasive essay.
Be sure to restate your thesis statement (topic and 3 points) in a creative way.
You need a good 'CLINCHER' that leaves your audience wondering about your topic and your opinion.
Comment and ask questions about at least 1 other students concluding paragraph.

WEDNESDAY: MOSAIC MIRRORS

Starting our mosaic mirrors!

The students learned more about the importance of feedback in the learning process today. The students wrote their first drafts of their introductory paragraphs for their persuasive essays and acted on the feedback they received for their next draft(s). Many of them had 'AHA" moments when they realized they had put topic sentences in their introductory paragraphs.

The students broke their tiles and started working on their mosaic designs for their mirrors. We are all looking forward to seeing everybody's final projects within the next week.

1.) LANGUAGE ARTS:

Complete editing and revising your introductory paragraph directly on yesterday's post. Do this according to everything you learned in class today and the feedback you all received.

2.) ART: Bring your coloured tiles, hammer, an old towel, and an old shirt.

3.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: 4.3 of your textbook. Post any questions you have here.

4.) SOCIALS: Mesopotamia quiz tomorrow based on the booklet and the learning intentions.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

After completely editing and revising your introductory paragraph, have an older sibling or parent proofread it and give you some feedback. Make the necessary changes.
Then, respond to your most recent revision and explain what changed from your first draft compared to your last draft.
Be sure to explain at least 3 different things you changed to improve the flow and structure of your introductory paragraph.
Then, copy and paste your most recent draft of your introductory paragraph here. (on today's blog post)
Give feedback on the 'STRUCTURE' of at least one other person's introductory paragraph.

TUESDAY: GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS

Let's do some tiling!

Today, students worked on their persuasive essay outlines using a graphic organizer. It was amazing to see how engaged and passionate the students were in their learning.

In Physical Education, we started our Track & Field unit by working on drills that will help them with their running technique. The students understand the importance of technique and form when running. Click here to review some of the drills we covered in class today and to learn other ones you can do to improve your speed!

2.) LANGUAGE ARTS:

Graphic organizers/outlines are due tomorrow.
Specific support in the form of examples, statistics, evidence, etc must be included in the 'DETAILS' section for each reason.

3.) ART: Bring your coloured tiles, hammer, and towel/rag. We will begin tomorrow.

4.) FRENCH: Oral quiz tomorrow! Back of emotions worksheet also due tomorrow.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, most of you completed your graphic organizers for your persuasive essays.
Write your first draft of your introductory paragraph here and be sure to include

a.) An inviting lead (hook)
b.) A thesis statement introducing your topic
c.) List all three reasons in the order you will write your body paragraphs in. Remember, keep it
brief and make sure you simply introduce your topic and then follow it with the three points
separated by commas.
d.) Don't forget about the givens!

Sell this 3D Pen!

Today, the students collaborated in groups of five to come up with an advertisement that included reasons why their classmates should buy a 3D pen. They know that the most convincing argument is when a reason is supported by details. These details can be facts, examples, statistics, research, quotes from authority figures, etc. They understand that nobody will buy this product simply because one person says that they should buy it. They know they must present a convincing argument to persuade

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7:

Complete worksheet 4.2 and show all your work.
You are NOT ALLOWED to simply write down your answer. You must write down the question you came up with to find your answer.

Bring a nutritional fact sheet tomorrow from a product.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you and your marketing/advertising team met and brainstormed ideas on how you could sell the 3D pen. Click here to see the video again.
Your marketing plan had to include a clever and creative presentation of:

1.) What you are selling.
2.) Reasons why people should buy your product.
3.) Details to support your reasons. (facts, research, quotes from authority figures, examples, etc.)

You are a sales representative and you are presenting this pen to people who could potentially buy the product.
In 100 words or less, sell your product (in words) to your audience (your classmates).

TUESDAY: Hammurabi Code

Genius Hour Presentation

Today, the students learned more about Mesopotamia and about the laws that existed. They learned that the Hammurabi code was very interesting and the consequences for certain actions were much more severe compared to what the consequences are like today. They were quick to note that we have become much more civilized. The students felt that the laws have changed to reflect how we have evolved into a much more developed, civilized, and peaceful people.

MATH 7:

Pg. 156 - 157 Questions #1-10, 13 and 15.
Watch this video to review what you learned today.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

This will be your second diary/journal entry as a native Mesopotamian who has actually gone forward in time.
You are in an imaginary time machine that takes you forward in time. You will start in Mesopotamia and make your way to today. Explain what you notice about the people and what the laws are like as you move forward in time to present day. Be sure to list a minimum of 3 stops along your journey through time.
For example, you will start with what the people and laws are like in Mesoptamia. You may then move onto an Ancient civilization of your choice. Then you may move to the 1800's and then to present day. It is your choice what year/era you choose. Some of you may choose ancient China, Japan, Greece, Egypt, etc. Everyone's time machine will take them on a unique journey to get a glimpse of how people have evolved over time.
Be sure to provide links to your sources.
Don't forget to provide good SUPPORT for all your ideas/points/opinions. BACK IT UP!!!

Jump Rope for Heart

Today, the students explored and learned about different topics they might want to use to write their persuasive essays.

In addition to this, they learned the importance of not simply stating their point/opinion, but also supporting it with solid evidence. The evidence can take the form of an example, research, statistics, quotes, etc. A good supporting sentence can help persuade someone to support your point.

2.) MATH 6:
MATH 7: Create your own designs with colour (4 different grids)!
a.) List 3 different ratios (1 part to part ratio and 2 part to whole ratios)
b.) List two fractions (part to whole only)
c.) List two decimals (part to whole only)
d.) List 1 percentages (part to whole only)

3.) GENIUS HOUR:

Some of you have volunteered to present tomorrow! If you are one of these lucky students, be sure to have all the materials you need to present.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Choose one of the examples below and provide a short paragraph that refutes or supports it. You can agree or disagree as long as you can provide good support for your point.
Also, provide at least one solid supporting sentence that proves your point. (research is required)
Don't forget to use transition words. You are basically providing a topic sentence and support for your point. If you have any questions, please post them here.
Example: Golf is a sport.

Today, the students had a quiet day of learning. Many students were 'FITKID' volunteers and were leading school fitness exercises with the entire school. The students know that staying fit is one of the components to living a healthy lifestyle.

The final comments, suggestions, and feedback have been given to you directly on your response drafts (Google Drive). You must make your edits/revisions tonight so we can assess them tomorrow. Be sure to follow the criteria carefully. If you do this, there is no reason why you won't do well.

1.) LA / NOVEL APPROACH:

Make your final edits on your document. Be sure to take the feedback given to you by myself, Mrs. Jensen, and Mr. Lewis. Use it to improve on your work.
Be sure to use your checklist to ensure you have included everything.

2.) GENIUS HOUR:

Bring everything you need to work on your projects. Tomorrow will be your last class and then you will present next Friday!

WEDNESDAY: Physical Education

Physical Education

Today, we were lucky to have nice weather! This allowed us to get more exercise outside. We had a surprise PE class and played some games on the baseball diamond on the big field. The students learned about working as a team to reach a common goal. I was really impressed how all the students were fair with one another and respected the rules of the game.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Review and study for your Ch.3 unit test. Chapter 3
Unit test tomorrow!

2.) LA /Novel Approach:

Response Draft #1 must be finished by tomorrow morning.
Make sure you have specific examples to support your points.
Go through your checklist to ensure you have included everything that should be included.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose a topic that was discussed during the read aloud today and write your thoughts in 100 words or less.
Ask at least one student a questions about their response.
Answer any questions you receive.

Today, students learned what must be included when writing a quality response for their 'Novel Approach' responses. The students realized they must follow criteria carefully in order to create a quality piece of work. They also understand that learning takes time and it is never about the first one to reach the finish line. Remember, use the feedback you receive from your teachers to improve your writing. If you have any questions, post them here.

MATH 7: Complete Pg. 135-137 #1-10, #12, #13, and #15 (if you didn't complete these in class .) WATCH VIDEOS!

Written responses should be completed for tomorrow according to the criteria. Make sure you refer back to the learning intentions!
You must bring your 'NOVEL APPROACH' booklets, handouts, and response checklist back to school tomorrow. Remember, you should not fill in the checklist. Simply use it as a checklist to ensure you are including everything you need to include.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Pretend you are a citizen of Mesopotamia and you are the inventor of something you have learned about this term.
Write a diary entry from the perspective of this Mesopotamian citizen.
Explain why you came up with this idea and how it will help.
Respond to at least one other person's diary entry and ask them some questions about their entry.
Reply to any questions you receive.
