'ALL ABOUT ME' COLLAGE IS DUE TOMORROW

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Today was S.O.A.R. day. Students enjoyed some floor hockey in PE and had some time to work on the personal collages. The collage is due tomorrow. Students will work on the writing components over the holidays. In the afternoon, the students earned some free time and we watched a movie and some students completed unfinished work, and others played some games.

IMPORTANT:
1.) SECRET SANTA: Presents must be at school tomorrow!
2.) COLLAGE: Due tomorrow (not the writing component)

HOLIDAY WREATHS

HOLIDAY WREATHS!

Thank you to all parents/students who donated items for our holiday wreath activity today. We appreciate your kindness. Students worked hard all day to complete their wreaths. A few students will finish their wreaths off tomorrow. Tomorrow is also SOAR day. Students can wear their pjs, comfortable clothes, bring stuffies, etc. We will have a Novel Approach lesson and finish our poetry lesson off from the other day. We will also have some time to enjoy our S.O.A.R. day! We may also watch a holiday movie in the afternoon.

IMPORTANT:
1.) SECRET SANTA: Please make sure your items are here by tomorrow at the latest.

2.) SOAR DAY: Plan accordingly! You are not permitted to play video games in class. :)

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) READING/LA: Read for 30 minutes and log.

2.) ART: We will try to finish our collages in class tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPOSE:

LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a learning reflection for my holiday wreath.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format: intro/body/conclusion
2.) BODY: Provide specific examples and support of what you did well (strengths), what you could have done better (areas for improvement), and what you found challenging.
3.) GIVENS: Spelling, capitals, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.
4.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Check and state if you followed the above criteria. If not, include what you forgot to include.
5.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give on student a very specific feedback item they can easily fix on their post.
6.) REVISION: Post your revised version based on your self/peer feedback.

HOLIDAY WREATHS

Today, we started the day off by synthesizing/evaluating/analyzing a poem. Students are quickly improving their comprehension of text and are using the reading strategies that they feel help them most. Many students shared their 'visible thinking' today on the poem titled, "A Night in a World." Students pushed my thinking during the modelling of the assignment and you could see how every time a student shared their thoughts, it pushed the thinking of the rest of the class! Keep up the good work everyone! Tomorrow, students will create their own poems using the structure of the one we went over today!

IMPORTANT:

2.) WREATH MATERIALS: Bring all materials to school tomorrow
3.) SECRET SANTA: Bring gifts to put under our tree!

December is typically a month of cultural celebrations from various cultures. Share with your class what you do in December to celebrate?
LEARNING INTENTION: I can share something I do in December to celebrate my culture/background/heritage.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format: intro/body/conclusion
2.) BODY: Include at least 2-3 examples and support for things you do during this celebration.
3.) GIVENS/CONVENTIONS: Spelling/capitals/punctuation/grammar, and sentence structure.
4.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Write a sentence after your paragraph to indicate you have copelted a self-assessment of the above criteria.
5.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give 1-2 people feedback based whether or not they have given 2-3 examples and have provided some support for those examples.
6.) REVISION: Post your revised version based on your self-assessment and/or your peer-feedback you received.

We have just one more week before the holidays! I hope you are all looking forward to some time off! I promise I won't post PARs for you on a daily basis! :) This week was busy. Students participated in wrestling, a presentation on Zero to Heroes, and a presentation by some high school students on sustainability. This upcoming week will be busy! We have SOAR day on Wednesday, we will be working on essay writing, and we will be making holiday wreaths for everyone to enjoy!
IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH FRACTIONS UNIT TEST IS ON MONDAY!

LEARNING/PLANNER:

Review the example questions before each of the lessons we covered in Chapter 2.
These sections will be tested on the Unit test

Wrestling in Action

Today, students started the day off with Music with Ms. Chung. Afterwards, some students went to writing group with Ms. Lum and others worked on their collages. After recess, students watched the Dreamriders Virtual Presentation. - Zero Heroes. In the afternoon, they had their final wrestling workshop, did a little math review, and ended the day with Social Studies/inquiry. Students are just coming up with their inquiry questions for Ancient Civilizations.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH: The unit test has been postponed until Monday so we have enough time to review.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) LA/READING: Read for 30 minutes and log your reading reflection.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

WRESTLING!

Today, students participated in their second wrestling class. They continued learning about safety, wrestling warm-up drills, and wrestling skills and techniques. Later, students participated i a 'FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS' art activity. I modelled and gave clear instructions. Students were to follow the instructions and create 3D snowflakes. Later, students took some time to work on their 'ALL ABOUT ME' collages and then ended the day with a math lesson on adding/subtracting fractions with number lines.

IMPORTANT:
1.) ART: Bring holiday decorations for our art activity coming up (Holiday Wreaths)
2.) ART: Bring collage items (photos of family, you, friends, etc)

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) LA/READING: Read for 30 minutes and complete your reading reflection (log)

2.) MATH:

Watch this video.
Pg. 72-73 Complete Questions #1-4.
Refer to the 2 examples on pg. 71 and 72 for an example of how to add and subtract.
You must draw number lines for questions #1 a, b, and #3 a, b, and c. As a challenge, you can try to use number lines for #2 and #3D.

Today, you were introduced to the 5 paragraph essay. You watched a video and too notes on what will be involved. After, you reviewed some essay topics that may interest you. However, we are hoping that you choose a topic that you have background knowledge in so you have much to write about. Such topics you may be interested in may include Black Lives Matters, Orange Shirt Day, Indigenous rights, or anything else you want to write about. We want to stay away from simply topics like, "What I did on the weekend" or "My favourite video game".
IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH TEST: Fractions unit test on Friday
2.) ART: Students/Parents, please bring holiday decorations if you have any to spare. We will need them to decorate our holiday wreaths that we will be making. Also, if you have any metal hangers, please send them to school for us to use.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) LA/READING:

Read for 30 minutes and write your reading reflection on your log sheet.
If you need another one, there are copies in class or you can print it out at home. Feel free to type it out if you like. I find some students are able to get more ideas down when they type.

2.) MATH:

1.) STRUCTURE: Paragraph structure (intro/body/conclusion)
2.) BODY: Include all components outlined in the posted video. Provide support in the form of examples. Remember, state information then back it up with an example of what you are talking about.
3.) GIVENS/CONVENTIONS: Pay attention to spelling, capitals, sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar.
4.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Check the video to make sure you have included everything.
5.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give one student feedback on what they could improve on based on the above criteria.
6.) REVISION: Post your revised version after you have improved it.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

Today, students started the day off with music with Ms. Chung. After, students started making progress on collecting items for their 'ALL ABOUT ME' collages. During math, we reviewed adding with fraction strips and learned how to subtract with fraction strips. In the afternoon, we started our new inquiry unit in Social Studies by building our background knowledge about ancient civilizations. Students watched a series of video clips that served as 'teasers' on various civilizations. Students made some notes and jotted down questions if they saw something that they might want to do their next inquiry project on.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH TEST: Planning to have the Fractions test next Wednesday.
2.) SCIENCE: Lab write-up due tomorrow.

PLANNER/LEARNING:
1.) LA/READING: Read for 30 minutes and log your reflection.

2.) MATH: Pg. 58-59 #5-6. Draw fraction strips and model your solutions.  Click here for the answer key.

3.) ART: Bring photos, materials, etc for your 'ALL ABOUT ME' collage.

4.) SCIENCE: Lab write up is due tomorrow. You will have a block of time to also put the final touches on your work tomorrow.

It is still one of the world's mysteries of how they were able to build them without the technology we have today.
4.) CONCLUSION: For your conclusion, end it with one question you are wondering about this ancient civilization that you are wondering.
5.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Check your work using the criteria above. Post a single sentence stating what you did not include. Add this in your revised version.
6.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give one student feedback using the criteria above. (descriptive feedback)
7.) REVISION: post your revised version based on your self-assessment and peer feedback.
