RECONCILIATION

OUR COMMON FUTURE

Today, students learned about reconciliation and about what happened in Kamloops at the residential school. It was heartbreaking to learn about what was discovered there. We read a news article, watched a news broadcast, and read a spirited reflection by Albert Dumont on Sir John A. MacDonald. It is a part of Canada's history that we are not proud of. So, it is important that we remember, acknowledge, learn, and never forget what happened to those innocent children not so long ago. Please take this opportunity to talk about this at home with your parents.

IMPORTANT:

Parents, please talk to your child about reconciliation and residential schools. Extend the conversation/discussion from school.

Medicine Wheel

Today, we continued our discussion on belief systems and spirituality. We learned about the first people's medicine wheel and how story telling was and is a large component of how indigenous people pass their learning down from generation to generation. Your assignment today is to read 3 different creation stories from different cultures and to answer the 3 questions on pg. 113. Students had a productive book club today. They are making good progress on their novel approach work.

IMPORTANT:

LEARNING:

Today, we started the day off by learning about belief systems. Students started exploring how belief systems have changed over time. Our class discussion revolved around belief systems, values, religion, philosophy, etc. The discussion was rich and thought provoking. We all learned something new today and it really got all of us thinking. Our discussion also revolved around how our beliefs, values, and identity is often influenced by our environment and upbringing. In the afternoon, students learned about pH with acids and bases. We will start our pH indicator lab tomorrow!

IMPORTANT:
LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Workbook questions due by the end of the day tomorrow.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH: Book club session tomorrow.

3.) SOCIAL STUDIES: Read and complete #1-3 on pg. 109 in Socials textbook.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we started learning about belief systems. Discussions are a great way to learn and research shows it is one of the best. It gets students thinking about the topics of discussion. The questions you come up with provoke thought and curiosity as was shown in class today. And remember, questions are one of the BIG 6 learning principles.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can ask 3 questions about what was discussed in class today or from today's readings.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body, and conclusion)
2.) Intro must be engaging based on what was learned in class today.
3.) In your questions/supporting sentences, you must include at least 3 of the terms you
learned about in Social Studies class today. Refer to pg. 104-109 of your Social Studies
textbook.
4.) Do your best to make your questions thought provoking.
5.) Respond to at least one question from one of your classmates. You can respond with
questions or a thoughtful response.

INTERVAL TRANINING

We were lucky to have Mr. Sun visit us today. The forecast was calling for rain, so this was a pleasant surprise. Lucky for the students, we had an opportunity to go outside for PE at the end of the day for some interval training. Student have been indicating their endurance/stamina has been lacking. Well, I know just the fix! Interval training makes your heart stronger and more efficient!

IMPORTANT:
1.) PHOTO RETAKES ARE TOMORROW! Dress appropriately if you are taking retakes!

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: No HW.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH: Complete what you decided with your group to complete (readings, NA booklet, Gift of Words, thinking and learning questions, etc)

POST A RESPONSE:
LEARNING INTENTIONS: I can collaborate with my peers to complete today's PAR in order to be given
a PAR pass for 2 weeks!
SUCCESS CRITERIA: 1.) Paragraph format (intro/body/conclusion)
2.) Write a standard paragraph explaining how you were able to motivate and
communicate with your peers to complete this task!
3.) In your supporting sentences, you should include at least 2 forms of
  communication you used to accomplish this goal!

MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM

Mental Health Symposium

Today, students started on their second novels for the final phase of the Novel Approach. We reviewed learning intentions, success criteria, and all expectations of students during each book club session. After recess, they completed a 'SHOW ME WHAT YOU KNOW' worksheet on Circles (area and circumference) to check for understanding and to make sure students have been completing their daily math work by completing it, marking it, and correcting it. In the afternoon, students participated in a mental health symposium.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Sports Day: Tomorrow (FRIDAY) is sports day. Dress appropriately for the weather. We will be outside for much of the day and it will be a warm day.

ITEMS TO BRING:
- Snacks, water, sunscreen, water balloons, outdoor sports equipment to play with at Oak Park, other fun toys to use in the afternoon.
2.) LONG WEEKEND: This coming weekend is a long weekend. The school is closed on Monday.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Make sure you have completed, marked, and corrected all math from this week (circumference and area of circles pages) from Math Focus.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Each group has set the expectations on what needs to be completed for Tuesday. Each student has written what needs to be completed in their planners.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

We participated in a mental health symposium with 68 different Gr. 7 classes from across the district today. We learned a lot about what it is.

EARTH BITES

Today, students completed their Pencil to Pixels assignment. Look out for the video that will be published to show their learning. They all reached the learning intentions! They learned how to use digital tools, layers, and how to digitize a hand drawn image. Later, students reviewed area of a circle for math, engaged in our EARTHBITES program, and learned more about high jump in PE.

Today, students were busy bees! They have a deadline to meet and they are on track to finish tomorrow! The goal is to upload their collages and videos of their progress by the end of the day tomorrow. Everyone has been creating amazing pieces of artwork! Well done everyone! In the afternoon, we continued learning about area of a circle. Ms. Altman continued with the inquiry presentations on early humans.

IMPORTANT:

6 MORE WEEKS!

We have 6 more weeks of school left. Which means we have 6 solid weeks of learning left! The learning never stops and it doesn't slow down! Be sure to keep working hard so you can end the school year off on a strong note. I want all of you to be prepared for Gr. 8! Today, students learned about the area of circles and had a literary elements quiz. Later, they learned more about physical and chemical changes and observed a demo outside. In the afternoon, students learned how to long jump in PE.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: No HW

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

With the end of the school year approaching, I can sense many of you are ready for high school. However, we can't forget about everything you have learned this year in regards to your self-regulation. By this point in the year, you should be about to self-regulate using your self-regulation strategies. For example, referring to your C-Charts.
Today, I want you to write a detailed paragraph. This will be a reflective self-assessment.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can identify areas where I can improve in my self-regulation and how to improve in these areas.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body w/ 2-3 supporting details/examples, conclusion)
2.) Must include 2 areas for improvement and provide specific examples.
3.) Must include 2 strategies to use to improve in the areas for improvement. Provide specific examples.

SUNNY WEEKEND!

Students, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the weather with your family in the outdoors this weekend! I apologize for the late post. I have been doing a lot of gardening. Friday was full of progress. Students reviewed the literary elements and elements of a story in preparation for their quiz on Monday. In addition to this, much progress was made on their pencil to pixels assignments. I can't wait to see their finished products this week!

Amazing what students can produce!

Today, students dove into track and field with the energy of lions! Students have been improving every day on the ABC's of running and their sprinting techniques. Today, they worked on their sprinting over 100m and 200m. They learned how to control their energy in order to run the entire distance. Students had a great workout today and we will have a better one on Friday!

IMPORTANT:

It is important to keep up with your schoolwork and to stay motivated even though the school year is ending in about 6 weeks. Stay energized and complete your daily work!

LEARNING:
1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes an log

2.) FRESHGRADE:

Have a parent comment on your algebra math test to show they have been informe of your results.
Students who are redoing the test will do so tomorrow.

FRENCH PRESENTATIONS

We only have a few more French presentations to go. We will finish the remainder off tomorrow. It has been amazing to see the work the students have produced! Well done to you all! In writing, we learned more about inferencing and how to make inferences when we read. In the afternoon, student ended the day by presenting their inquiry projects on Early Humans.

IMPORTANT:

Some students have not submitted their reading logs. If you do not do this by Friday, you will receive an incomplete.

LEARNING:
1.) LA/READING: Reading logs were due on Monday. They are overdue. If you don't hand anything in, it will ultimately effect your overall evaluation for LA on your final report.

2.) LA/WRITING: Complete the inferencing questions (3) on your handout from today.

FRENCH COOKING SHOWS

Today, we started the day off with our Algebra unit test. Students started presenting their 'FRENCH COOKING SHOWS' on the big screen. Students worked hard to learn the phrases taught in class and also new ones they researched. It was wonderful to hear students using the practical phrases they learned. It was very clear how much effort they put into their projects. Well done! We will see the remaining presentations tomorrow morning.

IMPORTANT:

LEARNING:

We continue to learn about the particle theory of matter.
In your own words, write a paragraph about what happens in the two scenarios.
1.) Mixing salt with 500 mL of water.
2.) Mixing salt with 200 mL of water.
LEARNING INTENTIONS: I can explain how salt dissolves in different amounts of water based on my knowledge of the particle theory of matter.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format.
2.) Include what you know about the particle theory of matter when you explain how much salt is dissolved in each scenario listed above. Make sure you mention the space in liquids and solids and the particles in each.

Today, we started the day off by learning about the particle theory of matter. Students learned about the differences between the 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, and gases). Students learned about spacing between particles in each state and the speed in which they move. In math, they continued to review algebra and they had one last class today to work on their creative writing assignments. They are due tomorrow morning.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Writing assignments are due tomorrow.
2.) Math test on algebra is on Monday.
3.) French cooking show assignment is due on Monday.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Pg. 424 of math Focus - mark and correct at home if you didn't finish this in class.

2.) WRITING:

GENERAL FEEDBACK FOR EVERYONE:
1.) Don't make it as long as humanly possible. You should not be adding much more to your stories! It is not about the length. It is not a contest. This is a short story assignment.
2.) Punctuation - Don't forget you need to capitalize the first letter inside of your quotation marks and there should be punctuation before your closing quotations.
3.) Plot curve - Make sure your intro, rising action, climax, declining action, and resolution is clear.

Today, students continued putting the final touches on their narrative writing assignments. They will have one last day to improve them based on teacher and peer feedback. They are due on Friday. In the afternoon, they learned about matter. They learned about solids, liquids, and gases. In addition to this they learned about chemical and physical properties and changes. In PE, they learned how to warm up properly and to complete proper Track and Field drills using the proper technique.
