"We will miss Hillcrest dearly!"

Today was the Grade 7 graduation assembly and all the students dressed up to celebrate this momentous occasion! They also enjoyed a dinner dance earlier tonight. The grade 6 students were happy to have graduated to the benches and will be sitting on them going forward! :-) The grade 7 students were a great bunch and they will be dearly missed! Best of luck to all of you and please keep in touch when you go to high school and even when you go on to post secondary education. I am always curious where my students learning journeys take them!

1.) BRING BACK ANY NOVELS, TEXTBOOKS, MATERIALS THAT BELONG TO THE SCHOOL. Your parents will be charged full price if you do not return them.

TUESDAY: ALMOST SUMMER!

First Nations Artwork

Today, the students worked hard to varnish the First Nations Artwork all the Grade 6/7 Students worked on. We will do our best to paint another coat onto them on Thursday morning. Then, we will zap strap them to the wire fence to create a creative wavelike design! We are all looking forward to seeing the artwork take shape!

1.) HW: Bring back any novels, textbooks, materials that belong to the school. Report cards will not be given out if you haven't returned your school books.

2.) Grade 7 Assembly: The doors will open at 8:45 am. Tell your parents to arrive before that if they want a good seat.

Grade 7 Field Trip to PlayLand

Today, the grade 7 students celebrated the year end by participating on a field trip to Playland/PNE. They enjoyed the beautiful weather, cotton candy, and scary rides with their close friends. Some students will be going to different high schools next year and so this was a great opportunity for the students to have some fun with each other. There are only a few days left of school, and all the students are looking forward to a break from school!

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:
- Grade 7 pancake breakfast tomorrow
- Grade 6 and 7 students: Do not bring lunch to school tomorrow. I will provide Chinese Food from Ming and Sing for you tomorrow. There will be food for vegetarians as well.

#TellThemNow - Happy Father's Day

Today, we started the day off by brainstorming ideas of things to say in our #TellThemNow father's day video that was created by a Vancouver based advertising company. The students watched the #TellThemNow video and an international father's day commercial. The students came up with awesome ideas, special moments that they have shared with their fathers, and reasons why they love them so much. Happy Father's Day!

1.) LA: Read for the pure joy of reading.

2.) FIELD TRIP: Grade 7 students will be going to Playland on Monday. Be sure to bring your hats, sunscreen, lunch, etc on Monday.

THURSDAY: FUN NIGHT

Tonight, the P.A.C. will be putting on 'FUN NIGHT!" The Hillcrest P.A.C. is absolutely amazing and they have worked endless hours to provide you with resources and funds for your education. Tonight is a fundraising event that all students of Hillcrest will benefit from through the silent auction. We are all looking forward to going to FUN NIGHT and enjoying the final few days of school with our friends, classmates, parents, and teachers.

LETTER TO GRADE 7 PARENTS/STUDENTS

1.) GRADE 7 STUDENTS: Bring a fedora or special hat to school tomorrow for your grad photos. You are not permitted to wear baseball caps.

Japanese Taiko Drum

Today, the students had an opportunity to watch the younger students at Hillcrest perform a Japanese story and also perform on the taiko drums. Click here to see an example of a famous taiko drumming group from Japan. It takes a great deal of strength and athletic ability to perform on a taiko drum. Much practice and training goes into learning how to do taiko drumming.

1.) LA / NOVEL APPROACH:

You have your novels, stickies, and booklets. Your job is to use everything you have written down within your powerful response.

Your powerful response is due on Thursday. Be sure to incorporate one or two of your thinking and learning questions and responses into your essay. I will be looking for this when I read through your responses.
Be sure to follow the criteria for your gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and your powerful response criteria template on Google Drive.
Ask any questions here.

2.) FIELD TRIP:

We will depart Hillcrest before recess at 10:15am.
NO WATER GUNS.
Bring any sports equipment you would like to play with at the park (tennis rackets, footballs, frisbees, etc.)
Do not bring lunch tomorrow as hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be provided.
Bring sunscreen and a water bottle.

Today, students enjoyed a day of fun! Today was sports day and the students participated in a variety of games and activities. It was a great opportunity for all of them to show sportsmanship and how to have fun together! The day ended with a tug-of-war match between all the different Grade 6/7 colour teams! Way to go everyone!

Tomorrow is sports day. Be sure to dress in your team colours tomorrow! Also, memorize your team cheers! If you have any questions about sports day, feel free to post your questions here.

You will complete your powerful responses in class likely on Monday.

2.) SOCIALS/SCIENCE:

Your Geocache must be submitted before Saturday. If it is not, your mark will be affected. You must discuss this and get organized with your group.

WEDNESDAY: Report Cards - Communicating Student Learning

Talent Show - Pitch Perfect

Today, students worked on their student responses for what they will write on their report cards to communicate their learning to their parents. Students wrote a variety of comments that referred to learning intentions, criteria, feedback, and learning reflections. The students have all become excellent learners and it is clearly evident form the comments and reflections they started writing today. These files must be saved to the flash drive tomorrow morning. Be sure to put some thought into what else you will write in your comments section.

GRADE 7 STUDENTS: Bring your PLAYLAND forms/money back ASAP.

1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

If you have completed your novels, you should be working on your novel booklets and you will begin your powerful responses tomorrow.
If you haven't finished your novels, you must complete reading until the end of chapter 18 by tomorrow. Be sure to keep track of your powerful words, connections, and thinking and learning questions with our stickies.

2.) SOCIALS:

Geocache - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SUBMITTED AND RECEIVED A REPLY FROM Geocache.com (ONE PERSON IN YOUR GROUP SHOULD HAVE ALREADY DONE THIS)
This is very important!!!!!!! Your final grade will depend on this. Ethan's group has received approval from geocache.com already.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

What is your definition of a powerful word/phrase? (don't forget about the context in which the word is used)
Explain what types of things you would include in your powerful words/phrases.
What is your definition of a thinking and learning question?

TUESDAY: Deep Sea Explorer Investor Pitch

Is this your Lululemon hoodie?

Today, students started pitching their 'DEEP SEA EXPLORER' ideas to the class with their PREZI presentations. The students focused their presentations on the learning intentions and the criteria of what a good presentation looked like. We were all impressed with the quality of the work that was displayed in class today. We are hoping to complete the remainder of the presentations tomorrow. Also, don't forget your PE strip. We will be going outside for PE class tomorrow. Yes.......I said PE.

1.) LA / NOVEL APPROACH:

Read up to the end of chapter 14. You will have a Book Club discussion in class tomorrow.
If you aren't caught up, be sure to get caught up! Use your stickies!

2.) SCIENCE:

If you haven't handed in your prototype report, tomorrow is your final chance. Please note, it is already late.

3.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.

MONDAY: BOOK CLUB DISCUSSIONS

Today was a very hot day. It reminded us how important it is to wear sunscreen every day and to drink enough water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated. With the summer in full force, all students should continue to bring a refillable water bottle. (TO BE UPDATED)

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: You will complete the rest of your test tomorrow.

2.) SCIENCE:

Prototype Airplane reports must be handed in as you walk into class tomorrow morning.
Deep Sea Explorer Prezi presentations will be tomorrow. Be sure to talk to your partner about how you are going to present.

3.) LA / NOVELS:

Complete reading up the end of Chapter 12. DON'T FALL BEHIND!
If you have already completed your novels, feel free to read a second novel from the selected novels.
Keep track of your powerful words/phrases, connections, and thinking and learning questions with your stickies! Do this as you read or it will be too much work for you later on.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Learning how to use reading strategies!

Boys and girls, if your Animoto account has expired, simply enter the new student code under the 'ACCOUNT' section of your profile in Animoto. NEW STUDENT CODE: a4ehongae79fd

Your Science photo journal from the Aquarium field trip is due on Tuesday. Please contact your partner(s) and make sure you create a quick Animoto that is completed according to the criteria outlined on your handout from the other day. You will have time on Monday to work on this.

If you have time, watch this video on deep sea creatures!

1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Read up the the end of chapter 10.
Be prepared for your group discussion on Monday.
Keep track of your powerful words/phrases, deep connections, and thinking and learning questions with stickies. If you don't have stickies, simply write them on a piece of paper in an organized manner for each chapter you read.
YOU MUST BRING YOUR NOVEL BACK TO SCHOOL.

2.) MATH 6: Complete any assigned work. All of you have a mean, median, and mode test coming up. Some classes have it on Monday and some have it on Tuesday. Check your teacher's website for further details.
MATH 7: Complete any assigned textbook questions and the 6.5 worksheet on the back of your quiz. Start the chapter self test at the end of chapter 6. Your unit test will be on Tuesday.

3.) SCIENCE:

Self assess your Prezi (deep sea explorer) with your partner and improve on your projects. This includes the descriptions of how each component helps explore the deep sea! Your projects are due on Monday. No more time will be given in class. Be sure to have you spreadsheet completed as well. Post any questions you have here or email me directly.
Complete your Prototype Airplane Report. This must be handed in when you walk in the door on Monday. No extra time will be given in class. Follow the criteria outlined in your blue booklet and be sure to write or type up your report. You must attach the table. Your table includes all your observations.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

What are all the limitations to deep sea exploration that you learned about? Explain each.
Also, explain a SPECIFIC type of technology that would help overcome EACH of these limitations.
Do some research and find one thing that has been invented by a Canadian that helps explore any extreme environment. Do your best not to mention ones that other students have already mentioned. I do understand there will be some overlap.
Ask two students questions about their response.
Respond to any questions you receive.
Edit/revise.
On the very last line of your PAR, type the name of your Division. I want to see if all of you actually read through today's entire post. :-)
