Thank you for the books!

We have spent the last 2.5-3 weeks working through our first novels, gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and powerful response writing. You engaged in meaningful conversations in class during your book clubs and were able to further deepen your thinking by learning from one another. Your work is due tomorrow. You will receive your second novel on Monday after your work is evaluated over the weekend!

Students have finished their novels! They are hard at work on their novel packages which includes their gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and their powerful responses. This is nothing new to them. They know the routine. We reviewed learning intentions and success criteria today to make sure the expectations are crystal clear. Students must submit all of their summative work on Friday to be evaluated.
IMPORTANT:
1.) DUE DATES:
- Narrative/Creative writing due on Monday
- Novel Approach due on Friday

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete pg. 92-93 in Jump Math 7.2

2.) READING: Read 30 min and log.

3.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Booklets should be finished now. Start your powerful responses.
Rubric and template for your Gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and powerful response can be accessed here.

4.) WRITING: Continue working on your stories. (Due Monday)

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you had your last book club before working on your powerful responses.
Watch this video before you do today's PAR!
Write a self-assessment in paragraph format using the following learning intentions (no criteria today).
LEARNING INTENTION:
- I can explore and express ideas, opinions, and perspectives about the big idea of the story.
- I can have a meaningful, purposeful and respectful conversation with my peers.
- I can talk and learn from other by questioning, reflecting, and building on my peers' ideas.
For each of the learning intentions above, give an example of how you met it or how you didn't meet it.
Complete a self-assessment using the givens (Spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation). (Post as a reply to you original post).
Post a revised version.

REEL 2 REAL FILM FESTIVAL

Click above to celebrate Earth Day!

Today, students learned a valuable lesson. They learned about digital citizenship and cyber bullying. They watched a documentary film put out by Telus and Carol Todd (mother of Amanda Todd), "The Dark Cloud." They learned about how the actions of people can have serious consequences. They also learned about what we can do to make sure things like this don't happen. Tomorrow, we will continue our discussion on prevention and how we should treat each other. Like Bonnie Henry says, we should "Stay calm, safe, and be kind to everyone!" Later, to celebrate Earth Day, we spent some time outside working on our film festival writing activity on 'The Dark Cloud' documentary. In the afternoon, we had a desk change, cleaned and organized, and worked on our Pencil to Pixel artwork.

Parents, if you get the chance, please watch this documentary we saw in class today and have a discussion with your child. It is an important one to have with them. Keep the dialogue going.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format
2.) Includes 2-3 supporting points, examples, evidence, etc from the film to support your big idea (use of strategies would be helpful here). Include at least one deep connection and elaborate on it and how it helped you get the big idea.

4.) Ask one student a question about one of their connections.
5.) Edit/revise as needed.

REEL 2 REEL FILM FESTIVAL

Today, we started our REEL 2 REEL film festival for kids. The short films we watched contained content relevant to you and hopefully you were able to make some deep connections about how they connect to you and the world around us. Your only assignment today is to post your big ideas for the following films. We continued working through our novel approach work and ended the day with PE outside.

LEARNING INTENTION: I can come up with the big idea by using the reading strategies.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) 3-5 sentences for each movie
2.) Provide evidence to support your big idea by using reading strategies and explain how they helped you come up with a big idea.

PENCIL TO PIXELS DAY 2

Students are amazing!

Today, we made more progress on our Pencil to Pixels art by learning how to draw a face of an individual who identifies themselves as a female. Click the new videos I posted below if you want to practice drawing eyes and hairstyles. Over the next couple weeks, your drawings will continue to improve. Once we finish our final pencil draft, we will then digitize them using the IBIS PAINTx app. I can't wait to see what you all create! Keep up the good work! Tomorrow, we will begin watching some of the films from the children's film festival. We will spend some time every day this week watching them as you try to synthesize and evaluate the films for the big idea!

IMPORTANT:

AT HOME CONFERENCES: April 19th - April 20th

Pencil to Pixels

Today, students worked on their learning portfolios in preparation for their at home conferences that will take place either today or tomorrow. Students have the choice to present their learning to their families on Monday or Tuesday. Parents, please dedicate 20-30 minutes of your time so your child can clearly present their learning to you. Please ask them questions about their learning from this past term. The students have started taking more ownership over their learning this term and understanding how the big 6 Learning Principles connects to everything we do in class.

IMPORTANT:
1.) AT HOME CONFERENCES: Parents, students may present to you on Monday or Tuesday. Whichever day works best for your schedules. Click here for the parent handout.

LEARNING:
1.) Present your learning portfolio to your parents if you are ready to do so. Otherwise, complete what you need to do and present tomorrow.

Students are making progress on their creative/narrative writing assignments. They are embedding the literary elements they have learned about and are using the 6 write trait to create quality writing. We continue to learn more about substitution in algebraic formulas and we are busy preparing for our at home student-parent conferences. After your child shows you how they are owning their learning, you will have the option to have a conference with Mr. Hong. Your child will give you a display of their learning on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Any necessary virtual conferences with mr. Hong will occur next Wednesday.

IMPORTANT: Your child will review their learning with you on Monday or Tuesday.

LEARNING:
1.) LA/READING/NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete your work that your group agreed to complete for tomorrow.

2.) MATH:

Today, students received their first novel and packages for the final stage of the Novel Approach. The excitement was in the air and a lot of student have been eagerly awaiting their new novels. Students will read up to 5 novels by the end of the school year while practicing their use of the reading strategies they have learned since September. In math, we continued learning about linear graphs and algebra. We spent time outside playing tennis and using our outdoor classroom. In writing, we learned about irony.
IMPORTANT:

Today, we finally received a break from the rain and the weather was just amazing! The forecast is calling for sun all week! We will do our best to do as much of our learning outdoors! Today, we learned about allusions. Students then had time to practice identifying and creating their own allusions of students in the class. Later, we continued learning about patterns and algebraic formulas/expressions. We ended the day with a chemistry vocabulary word sort and an introduction to our upcoming French cooking show assignment.
IMPORTANT:
1.) STUDENTS/PARENTS: Please go online and pay any unpaid fees for the last film festival. $4 is due for the upcoming Reel 2 Reel Film Festival.

LEARNING:

Today, students learned more about different elements of a story. These elements will help the students write their narrative writes. Students have been super excited about their creative writing assignments. We have been learning about different elements on a daily basis, have had practice identifying each of the elements, and have been incorporating them into their stories. Their stories are shaping up to be excellent ones! We are planning on putting all the stories together into a published book that the students can purchase as part of their Gr. 7 memories at the end of the school year.

NARRATIVE WRITING

Creative Writing

Students started working on their creative writing assignments. We have spent the last week learning about narrative writing and literary elements/elements of a story they will incorporate into their stories. Some of the elements they will include are setting, characterization, theme, plot, conflict, etc. Students have become accustomed the writing process. They finished their brainstorming prior to starting their stories.

IMPORANT:

Parents, student conferences are coming up. It will be optional. We will be using a different format this year. Your child will be creating a presentation they will show you later this month. This will be a display of their learning over the last few months. Should you have any questions after your child shares their learning with you, you have the option of having an online conference. It will not be mandatory. I will send out more information later this week.

LEARNING:
1.) LA/READING:

Reading logs are due anytime this week for the past month.
Read for 30 minutes daily and log the strategies you use.

2.) MATH:

Complete first handout (2 pages - front/back). We will mark it in class tomorrow.

3.) LA/WRITING:

Continue working on your narrative writing assignments (creative writing).
Make sure your setting (time/place) is clear and you introduce the main characters in your introduction.
Try to incorporate 'FLASHBACKS' into your writing.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about 'FLASHBACKS' and how to use them within your stories.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a paragraph that shows my understanding of how to use 'FLASHBACKS'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format
2.) Givens/Conventions are paid attention to
3.) Includes a transition word that indicates it is a 'FLASHBACK'. If you are unsure about this, refer to the video posted below.
4.) Your paragraph must clearly show your writing transition from present to past(flashback).
5.) Give one student a suggestion for improvement and edit/revise your own paragraph based on peer feedback or a self-assessment.
