Today, students started a self-regulation colouring activity and also completed a Static Electricity challenge! Tomorrow, students will write a quiz on electricity and static electricity. VIDEO LINKS: Happy Christmas - War is Over In the morning, students continued working through the writing process. Today, they learned about body paragraph structure and brainstormed ideas for their topic sentences and supporting sentences. Our class temporarily turned into a maker space today. We decided to 'DECK THE HALLS' by creating items for the holiday season. Some students planned and designed 3 D objects, some designed Xmas themed decorations, and all students incorporated a holiday custom from a different culture in their creations. We will post some pictures of their final products tomorrow. IMPORTANT: 1.) SECRET SANTA - Bring your present before Friday and place it under the tree. 2.) SUCCESS CRITERIA: 1.) Paragraph format 2.) Explain a random act of kindness you displayed today towards a friend or family member. If you have not done this today, go do it before writing. 3.) Your paragraph should clearly explain how you felt after you completed the random act of kindness, who you showed the kindness to, and what it is you did. The students have been working hard on improving their reading abilities by practicing their use of the reading strategies. We recently finished reading 'FISH IN A TREE' and the students are finishing up their self-assessments of their powerful responses based on their powerful response writing rubrics. Happiness is Helping Others The grad hoodies have arrived! If you didn't pay for yours yet, be sure to remind your parent to pay online tonight so you can receive yours tomorrow. Today was a busy day as always. We started the day off with some FreshGrade action. Students self-assessed their artwork and posted their learning reflections. Parents, please be sure to check your child's digital portfolio on a regular basis for updates on how your child is doing. Please also feel free to give them feedback or words of encouragement on their portfolios! IMPORTANT: 1.) Pay for your grad hoodies online! 2.) Pay for your Jump Math Books online. 3.) VIDEO LINKS: Fish in a Tree Today, students had a break in from reading/writing to work on some poetry. We learned about different types of poems and how to write them. After brainstorming some ideas, students had some time to write their own poems. Later, students learned about place value and also had some time to do some coding/robotics work in ADST. They ended the day with the start of their new Socials Inquiry Unit on Early Humans. IMPORTANT: 1.) We will make our wreaths on Thursday. Please bring the following if possible: - a wire hanger - Christmas decorations (ornaments, lights, tinsel, ribbons, holly, bells, etc - The dollar store has many different options to choose from. Sphero - App and Connecting Today, students engaged in the peer-assessment process and the feedback loop. They looked at the work of their peers with a critical eye by going through it carefully with the success criteria rubric. In addition to this, they started responding to the feedback they received to improve their powerful response writing for 'SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS'. Their homework tonight is to finish editing/revising their work based on the feedback they received. IMPORTANT:

Next week, we will make holiday wreaths! I will supply some materials, but have asked students to also bring decorations and some materials to work with. The dollar store has many holiday decorations that are suitable from plastic holly, bells, ribbons, etc. Please take your child to the dollar store or give them some supplies to bring to school on Monday. One essential item for this art activity includes at least one wire coat hanger, 2 if possible. IMPORTANT: 1.) Today, students learned more about electricity. They learned about atoms - electrons, protons, and neutrons. In addition to this, they learned about conductors, insulators, and static electricity. Click here to view their lesson. Later in the afternoon, students completed a self-assessment of the critical thinking core competency. VIDEO LINKS: Amazing Lightning Upward The Science of Lightning Today, students started working on their final Novel Approach assignment before moving on to picture books. Their assignment was to complete their visible thinking for 'WAR IS OVER - So This is Christmas' by John Lennon. Prior to the lesson, we got our brains warmed up and primed for the activity by looking at some powerful images taken over the last 6 months. All photos were related to the BLM movement and protests that have occurred around the world. If you have some time, please watch this episode of 'UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATIONS WITH A BLACK MAN' and have a discussion with them about it. It will only take 10 minutes out of your day.
