Today, students started a self-regulation colouring activity and also completed a Static Electricity challenge! Tomorrow, students will write a quiz on electricity and static electricity. It will be based on the notes provided in class and the experiments we conducted at school.

DECK THE HALLS

'DECK THE HALLS!'

In the morning, students continued working through the writing process. Today, they learned about body paragraph structure and brainstormed ideas for their topic sentences and supporting sentences. Our class temporarily turned into a maker space today. We decided to 'DECK THE HALLS' by creating items for the holiday season. Some students planned and designed 3 D objects, some designed Xmas themed decorations, and all students incorporated a holiday custom from a different culture in their creations. We will post some pictures of their final products tomorrow.

IMPORTANT:
1.) SECRET SANTA - Bring your present before Friday and place it under the tree.
2.) CATCH-UP - Some students have not been completing their PARS regularly. Santa is watching. He knows.......He knows......He also knows its report card time.

LEARNING:
1.) LA/WRITING: Complete brainstorming handout for body paragraphs (due tomorrow).

LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a descriptive paragraph about a random act of kindness.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format
2.) Explain a random act of kindness you displayed today towards a friend or family member. If you
have not done this today, go do it before writing.
3.) Your paragraph should clearly explain how you felt after you completed the random act of
kindness, who you showed the kindness to, and what it is you did. (REMEMBER: State your point
and then back it up with an example.)
4.) Self-assess your work based on the criteria above. Post a comment with your self-assessment.
5.) Edit/revise your work to improve it based on your self-assessment.

POWERFUL RESPONSE WRITING

We are in our last week before the holidays and the students are in full swing! The students have been working hard on improving their reading abilities by practicing their use of the reading strategies. We recently finished reading 'FISH IN A TREE' and the students are finishing up their self-assessments of their powerful responses based on their powerful response writing rubrics. They posted their work here. Parents, please take a moment to read your child's response to see how their writing is progressing. Their work will be evaluated on FreshGrade.

IMPORTANT:

2.) SECRET SANTA: Bring your Secret Santa presents and put them under our Christmas tree before Friday.

LEARNING:
1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and write down related information in your reading log. (DUE FRIDAY)

2.) LA: Reading/Writing:

Items that need to be completed for tomorrow:
1.) First draft posted on yesterday's PAR.
2.) Post a reply to your first draft with your 'SELF-ASSESSMENT' comment indicating at least 2-3 thing you need to improve on based on the POWERFUL RESPONSE RUBRIC.
3.) Reply to your self-assessment with and edited/revised version (improved version) of your draft.
4.) This will be evaluated based on the rubric and posted to FreshGrade this week.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

This time of year is a time for giving and helping others.
You are all quite fortunate to have food, clothes, and a roof over your heads. We must think about those who don't have what we have. Watch this video to provide you with some background knowledge about helping others.
Today, I want you to write a paragraph using the following criteria:
LEARNING INTENTIONS: I can write a paragraph outlining 2-3 ideas how I can help people in need.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (engaging intro, body - including at least 2-3 supporting points and examples, and conclusion)
2.) Supporting points also provide specific examples of how you could help people in need.
3.) Givens have been paid attention to (spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitals, and sentence structure)

The grad hoodies have arrived! If you didn't pay for yours yet, be sure to remind your parent to pay online tonight so you can receive yours tomorrow. Today was a busy day as always. We started the day off with some FreshGrade action. Students self-assessed their artwork and posted their learning reflections. Parents, please be sure to check your child's digital portfolio on a regular basis for updates on how your child is doing. Please also feel free to give them feedback or words of encouragement on their portfolios!

IMPORTANT:
1.) Pay for your grad hoodies online!
2.) Pay for your Jump Math Books online.
3.) ROY - I have a larger hoodie for you. Do not wear yours and bring it back tomorrow.

LEARNING:

Today, students had a break in from reading/writing to work on some poetry. We learned about different types of poems and how to write them. After brainstorming some ideas, students had some time to write their own poems. Later, students learned about place value and also had some time to do some coding/robotics work in ADST. They ended the day with the start of their new Socials Inquiry Unit on Early Humans.

IMPORTANT:
1.) We will make our wreaths on Thursday. Please bring the following if possible:
- a wire hanger
- Christmas decorations (ornaments, lights, tinsel, ribbons, holly, bells, etc
- The dollar store has many different options to choose from. I will do my best to provide as much as possible but we will definitely need extra.

2.) Go to our school website and pay $35 for your Grad hoodies!

Today, we read some poems by Shel Silverstein in class and learned about different types of poems, their patterns, and what they look like.
Your PAR today is to simply write and post a poem that you are proud of. This can be one of your poems from today.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can post a poem that has meaning (big idea) to me.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Post any one of your poems that you wrote today. If you forgot your poems at school, you must write a new one.
2.) Read the poems that your classmates post.
3.) Post the big idea for 2 of the poems you read.
4.) Respond to any comments/questions you receive.

Electrical Safety from Home

Today, students engaged in the peer-assessment process and the feedback loop. They looked at the work of their peers with a critical eye by going through it carefully with the success criteria rubric. In addition to this, they started responding to the feedback they received to improve their powerful response writing for 'SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS'. Their homework tonight is to finish editing/revising their work based on the feedback they received.
IMPORTANT:

Bring your Holiday Wreath decorations from the dollar store or from your home! Ask your parents to take you to the dollar store.

LEARNING:
1.) LA: Complete your revised version of your powerful response based on the peer feedback you received in class today.

2.) ART: Bring your supplies. (decorations, ornaments, string lights, ribbons, etc)

3.) PAR: Holiday

HOLIDAY WREATHS NEXT WEEK

With the holiday season upon us, we are engaging in holiday art! Next week, we will make holiday wreaths! I will supply some materials, but have asked students to also bring decorations and some materials to work with. The dollar store has many holiday decorations that are suitable from plastic holly, bells, ribbons, etc. Please take your child to the dollar store or give them some supplies to bring to school on Monday. One essential item for this art activity includes at least one wire coat hanger, 2 if possible.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Bring 2 wire coat hangers and some decorations to school for our art activity that we will begin on Monday.

LEARNING:
1.) LA:

On your district OneNote/OneDrive/Teams account, finish your first draft of your 'POWERFUL RESPONSE' (Big idea) for 'WAR IS OVER'.
Respond to any feedback you have been given
Use the rubric/success criteria.

Students will be creating individual plans for their personal hygiene in the coming week so they have something to work on at home. Hygiene is important for our health. Later, we reviewed for the math test tomorrow. We took notes that outlined exactly which topics will be covered. Today, students learned more about electricity. They learned about atoms - electrons, protons, and neutrons. In addition to this, they learned about conductors, insulators, and static electricity. Click here to view their lesson. Later in the afternoon, students completed a self-assessment of the critical thinking core competency. Our school goal is on critical thinking and we have been working on this every year for the past 3 years.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH UNIT TEST ON FRACTIONS THIS FRIDAY!

Today, students started working on their final Novel Approach assignment before moving on to picture books. Their assignment was to complete their visible thinking for 'WAR IS OVER - So This is Christmas' by John Lennon. Prior to the lesson, we got our brains warmed up and primed for the activity by looking at some powerful images taken over the last 6 months. All photos were related to the BLM movement and protests that have occurred around the world. If you have some time, please watch this episode of 'UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATIONS WITH A BLACK MAN' and have a discussion with them about it. It will only take 10 minutes out of your day.

IMPORTANT:

Today, we talked about the Black Lives Matters (BLM) movement and brainstormed a list of ideas of what the images we looked at represented.
We have been learning about the power of words in class. Use 'POWERFUL WORDS' to write a paragraph on your opinion and feelings on the photos you saw in class today. Alternatively, you can watch the video posted below and write a paragraph on your thoughts about it.
LEARNING INTENTION:
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body, and conclusion)
2.) Supporting examples for each of your supporting points. Explain a point and then provide an example to back up your point.
