Co-Creating Criteria for Behaviour

Today, you co-created criteria for behaviour 'during a lesson' and 'during independent work time'. The groundwork is now set for our Novel Approach lessons and you will complete your first 'VISIBLE THINKING' student activity in class tomorrow on a poem I have selected from 'WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS'.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to bring your snacks/food/drinks tomorrow. Click here to write down what you will be bringing. We have lots of snacks. Please sign up to bring a food of some sort.

1.) HALLOWEEN:

Masks will only be permitted in class tomorrow, not outside during recess and lunch.
There will be a prize for the best costume!
Keep it appropriate.
Bring your food / snacks for our class celebration.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

In the spirit of Halloween and comprehension strategies, I would like you to watch this video with your eyes closed. Remember, "We don't use our eyes when we visualize!"
I want you write down your 'VISIBLE THINKING' as your post a response. This can be in point form or in paragraph form. I leave it up to you how you want to write out your thoughts.
Be sure to include a PURPOSE, at least 2 connections using your background knowledge, and 2 visualizations. Please keep your responses appropriate and don't write anything that might be considered offensive.
For your visualizations, ask yourself, "What do I see when I hear a specific noise or sound?
Ask one student a question about their response and give them one thing to work on.
Edit/revise your post.

LIVE LINK: A Slug Lays Eggs

A slug laying eggs.

It was an exciting day of ecosystems observations. One group observed one of their slugs laying eggs as they were making their observations. They took qualitative and quantitative observations. They noted where the eggs were coming from and how many eggs were laid. We also learned how to create organized tables of data in order to graph our quantitative observations for our lab write-ups.

1.) SCIENCE:

Type/write/print out your lab write-up with headings only and leave space for you to fill out in class next week. Be sure to have this ready next week. Print it out leaving ample space for everything you need to include.

2.) HALLOWEEN:

Get your costumes ready for Tuesday! There will be a prize for the best costume!

We should have plenty of food, so you likely won't have to bring lunch that day.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

After seeing the video below of the slug laying eggs and giving birth, list 5 questions you had before, during or after watching it.
Do some research and answer your five questions.
Provide the links to the sites you used.
Answer at least one question one of your classmates had.

ERIC WALTERS AUTHOR VISIT

Today, we were lucky to be able to have Eric Walters visit our school to give his book talks to us in the library. He was interesting, entertaining, and made everyone laugh many times. For more information on Eric Walters and his books, click here. Also, ifyou get the chance, watch his TEDTALK.

1.) LANGUAGE ARTS:

Complete your weekly word work and prepare for the quiz tomorrow.
This includes your word analysis, definitions in your own words, and sentences.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Using at least 10 words from your weekly words and write a short story in paragraph form. Each sentence should have some connection to your story. The sentences should be related.
Give one student your opinion about their story and offer a suggestion.
Take the feedback you receive and edit/revise your original response.

Picasso self-portraits

Today, the students completed the online components of the FSA and also the short writing section of the test. This is an exam that the government requires teachers to administer to grade 4 and grade 7 students. It is a test that assesses literacy and numeracy. We all have our own opinions about this test. Some parents excluded their children from writing the test.

1.) GREAT CANADIAN MAIL RACE

Label your envelope with the address of the school you would like to send it to.
Bring the envelope back to school tomorrow so you can send your letter off to the school yo have chosen.

2.) ANIMOTO EDUCATIONAL CODE:

Set up your animoto account using this educational code. You can input this into the account settings.

Play around with it and see if you can figure out how to use it for your ecosystems photo essay.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this song.
In your own words, what is the scientific method and what should you include in your lab write-up that you will be working on?
Be sure to include some general information based on your ecosystems project.
Self-assess your post for the givens - spelling, sentence structure, grammar, and capitals.
Give one student feedback on how they can improve their post.
Edit/revise your original post.

LOG INTO FRESHGRADE FROM HOME

Today, you continued working on your passing/bumping and serving in PE for volleyball. To review, click on this link and watch the video to see the proper technique used by many.

Also, if you haven't already done so, please be sure to download the app and log into FreshGrade using your passwords. Be sure to login with your parents under their accounts as well. Help them download the app to their mobile devices so they can stay in the loop with your learning and education. Special announcements and your assessments will all be posted here on a regular basis. Your first one will be uploaded on Wednesday in class.

IMPORTANT: FIELD TRIP TOMORROW! Dress appropriately, bring your lunch, bus fare or compass card, a jacket, something to take pictures with, a backpack, etc. If you have any questions, post them here.

In your own words, describe the difference between mixed numbers and improper fractions using something from your life. For example, a pizza (s). I ate an entire pizza plus an additional half. This equals 1 1/2 pizzas. Each of the pizzas had 8 slices. I ate a total of 12/8 slices.

Today, you continued working on your 'Great Canadian Mail Race' letters.
Do some research online and post the name and full address of the school you wish to send your letter to. This school cannot be a one that is located in British Columbia.
Explain why you chose this location and school.
Givens: spelling, capitals, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Give one person some feedback and Edit/revise you original posts for the givens mentioned above.

Today, we learned about 'FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT' and the learning process. This learning process can be applied in all areas of life where we are learning new things. You learned about the importance of learning intentions, success criteria, questions, self-peer assessments, descriptive feedback, and taking ownership of your learning. When you are able to understand where you are in your learning and what steps you need to take to improve, you are taking more ownership of your learning.

READING SURVEY

Today, we continued making qualitative and quantitative observations for our ecosystems projects. We discussed the importance of having enough quantitative observations in order to be able to graph the data in our lab write ups. We will have some time tomorrow for some more observations in the afternoon. In addition to this, we learned about abiotic and biotic interactions in an ecosystem and how introducing or removing something from an ecosystem can cause a chain reaction. Watch the video again with your parents and explain to them the different types of interactions you see.

Today, you watched 'How Wolves Change Rivers' in class and we had a discussion about how adding or removing things from an ecosystem can have a chain reaction that changes an entire ecosystem.
Watch the video again and describe at least 4 different interactions. 2 interactions should describe a biotic-biotic interaction and 2 of your descriptions should be abiotic-biotic interactions
Be sure to pay attention to the givens (Spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation).
Give one student suggestions/feedback on the givens listed above.
Edit/revise your original post.

MATH ASSESSMENT TOMORROW

Snail Eggs

Today, we reviewed for the math assessment tomorrow. You wrote down everything that you need to know for tomorrow and you wrote down examples. I have posted the 4 math videos from Friday here. Please review them at your leisure. Complete your review questions on the handouts and mark them at home with the answer key. If you forgot to pick up the answer key for the review questions, scroll down to the math section and you can download the answer keys and the questions.

Ecosystems observations

This week was a great week with division 2. They created their own rules and expectations for our class and took them home to read over with their parents. Both parents and students signed these contracts to acknowledge they understand what is expected of them when they are in class. So far, every single student has been following everything on this list. I am happy to see a group of very self-regulated students. I am looking forward to helping you learn this year. One area we will be working on is your social emotional learning. We have already discussed the zones of regulation and will be doing an art project with these in the coming weeks.
1.) FORMS:

2.) MATH:

Complete any unfinished work. Complete the worksheet you received on Friday.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Create a paragraph using at least 5 of your words from your word list.
You must have a minimum of 7 sentences.
Your paragraph should include an introduction, supporting sentences, and a conclusion.
Give one student a suggestion/feedback on their paragraph. Let them know if they didn't include an introduction, supporting sentences, or a conclusion.
Edit/revise your original post by replying to your original post and responding to feedback or your own self-assessment.

Today, you all took home two handouts to explain to your parents how our new reporting system will look like this year. Please read it with them and explain it to them. If you have misplaced yours, you can download and print a copy here. If your parents have any questions, please have them email me directly. Please return all forms tomorrow. It is very important that your parents provide their email addresses to me on this form.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I am happy to be teaching Division 2 this year at Laurier Elementary! The students gave me a warm welcome and have all been very kind. I am looking forward to helping you learn this year and I hope you feel the same way too! Here is our first post of the year. Please be sure to show your parents how our website works and how to contact me via my email address you wrote down in your planners. Parents, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

1.) MATH: Complete 3 pages (2 worksheets). Most of you have completed most of this and you only have to complete what you didn't get done in class today.

Tell me what your 'passion' is and why.
Include at least 3 reasons why and provide 3 examples to support your reasons.
Remember, only include your first name and response. Do not include your email address, last name, or website address.

Surrey to Vancouver

I am sad to announce my last day teaching at K.B. Woodward will be on Friday, October 6th. I will miss all the students and staff at K.B. dearly. I have accepted a position with the Vancouver School Board and my decision to change schools was a difficult one. I assure you the new teacher who replaces me next week will be more than qualified to teach you all. If you have any questions, please feel free to email, call, or drop by the class for a chat.
