WEDNESDAY: Jon Aldag's (Liberals) Presentation

Today, the Grade 6/7 students had an opportunity to listen to Jon Aldag, the Liberal candidate from the Cloverdale/Langley riding, talk about politics. He gave an informative non-partisan presentation on how the government works, the election process, and what the government does for people like you and me. Mr. Aldag also held a Q&A period where the students were free to ask questions based on what they had learned about in class. It was great for the students to be able to make real connections to what they have been learning about in Social Studies.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

If you were running to be the leader of a political party in Division 4, what would your platform be? By platform, I am referring to what points you would want to support?
List 4 points that you feel are important to you as a student and as a political leader of division 4.
Explain why you feel your 4 points are important and how you hope to achieve your goals if you are elected as the leader of your political party or as prime minister of Division 4.
For example: One item that I would support if I were running to be the Prime Minister of Division 4 would be to make sure all students completed their daily work in a timely manner. I would make sure all students would complete their work by talking to their parents and making them come in early the next day if they were unable to complete their work.
Give at least one positive comment and one suggestion to at least one other student.
Edit/revise your post.
Let other students know if you would support their platforms or if you disagree with their platforms. Please be polite with one another in your responses.

TUESDAY: TERRY FOX RUN TOMORROW

Terry Fox Video

Come to school in your PE gear so you are ready to participate in the Terry Fox run tomorrow. We will warm up with the entire school before heading out into the neighbourhood. We will be running for about 30 minutes. We will be running in support of Terry Fox and cancer research. If you have your pledge forms ready, please be sure to bring them to school. Terry fox is a Canadian hero and has raised millions and millions of dollars for cancer research.

Today, we continued reading from Counting by 7's. We have learned a lot about Willow Chance and her character.
Write a paragraph about Willow Chance and what you think she is like from what we have read so far.
Include an introductory sentence, a few character traits (include examples of each trait), and a concluding sentence.
Give one student a positive comment and some suggestions on how the student could improve their work.
Edit/Revise your original post based on the suggestions or on your own self-assessment if you did not receive any feedback.

Since you have all been excellent students over the last few weeks, you can take Monday off. Don't come to school on Monday. Use this time to read, spend time with your family, practice fun math questions, or whatever else you want to do. :-) It is indeed a professional development day for teachers so we will spend the day learning about fun and exciting ways to improve our teaching abilities to help you learn better.

1.) MATH 6: Complete all unfinished worksheets. Quiz on factors and multiples on Tuesday.
MATH 7: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Talk to your parents about each of the parties running in the election and see if you can explain what each party wants to do.
You will have a quiz on Tuesday based on your class notes.
You must be able to explain at least 2 things each party wants to do for Canadians. Your notes were based on the article below. Remember, we wrote everything in kid friendly language. NATIONAL LINK (ARTICLE) --> Economies, taxes, and pocketbook issues.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

If your class number is an even number, skim through the Cloverdale Liberal party website and the New Democrat Party websites.
If your class number is an odd number, skim through the Cloverdale Conservative Party and Green Party websites.
In your response, write a short structured paragraph (intro, supporting details/sentences, and concluding sentence). Your paragraph must include the following points from your two assigned website.
Your response should be in kid friendly language as if you are talking to another grade 6/7 student.
Your response should include at least 2 interesting facts that each of the candidates from Cloverdale are in support of.
Give at least one student a positive comment and at least one suggestion for improvement.
Edit/revise your original post.

THURSDAY: Counting by 7's Read Aloud

Counting by 7's

Today, we started reading Counting by 7's in class today. We read chapter 1 and were introduced to Willow Chance and Dell Duke. The introductory paragraph was a powerful one and at the end of the chapter, we learned that something happened to Willow's parents. This novel has something for everyone! Every single student will make some deep connections with the content of the book. It is about friendship, fitting in, oddballs, hobbies, laughing, crying, miracles, and family.

Quiz on Tuesday: Factors, Multiples, Greatest Common Factors, Least Common Multiples.
Watch this video to review and prepare for the quiz.
Complete all unfinished worksheets from this past week for homework.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Based on what we read in class today (Counting by 7's), write about something you connected with, felt emotional about, or found interesting.
Write your response using the paragraph structure you have already learned about. Include an interesting hook, at least 1 supporting details (not just 1 supporting sentences - Remember to describe and explain using examples), and a concluding sentence that talks about what you're looking forward to about the novel.
Here is an example of a response: Willow Chance seems to be an intelligent and strong character. I was able to connect with the end of the chapter. Near the end of the chapter, Willow learned that her parents had been in an accident. When I was in grade school, a friend of mine had parents who had been in a horrible car accident which left his father in a wheel chair and his mother did not recover from her injuries. I can't imagine what it was like for him to go through that experience. I am looking forward to learning more about Willow Chance and everything she experiences.
Give one student a positive comment and at least one suggestion for improvement.
Edit/revise your original post.

WEDNESDAY: Elections 2015

Today, the students dove deeper into learning about the hot topics surrounding the 2015 elections. They learned about the pros and cons to some topics from vaccinations to government surveillance and also about privacy and freedom. Next week, a candidate from the Liberal party of the Cloverdale riding will be coming to talk to the students about his platform. We are hoping to have the other candidates come to Hillcrest to talk about what they hope to do if they are elected.

1.) MATH 6:

Watch this video for extra review.
Complete Chapter 3 Lesson 2 Questions #1 a-f
Complete String art and follow the instructions carefully on pg 77 of your textbook. Don't forget to answer all 4 questions on pg 77.
Use different colours and continue connecting the lines with multiples of 6,7,8, etc.

Watch this video on divisibility with your parents. It will help you understand your divisibility rules.

2.) Social Studies:

Show your parents one of the issues from the canada.isidewith.com website that you haven't read about on your own yet and try to explain what the statistics (pie graph) means and what some of the pros and cons may be.
Ask them if they can think of any pros and cons.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Many of you have expressed an interest in the fine arts (painting, drawing, drama, digital art, photography, dance, etc).
Post a short paragraph about any fine arts topic that you are interesting in learning about this year.
In your paragraph, be sure to use the structure you learned about in class: a.) a topic sentence b.) supporting sentences / details c.) concluding sentence
Provide at least 2-3 reason why you want to learn about a given topic and be sure to include examples for each reason.
Post a positive and encouraging comment for one other student and give the same person at least 2 suggestions for improving their paragraph.

Today, the Grade 6 students learned the definition of a factor and how to find factors of any number using three different methods. They learned how to factor numbers, use factor rainbows, and factor arrays. They worked on three different sheets in class and will complete them for homework if they didn't complete them in class today.

MONDAY: 2015 Elections

Today, students learned about the different issues that are being discussed in this year's elections. Students brainstormed a list of ideas that were important to them as Canadians which helped them with their activity today. Click here to see what the students came up with. It was great to see what the students viewed as being important to them. Afterwards, they looked a little deeper into the different political issues at hand on the canada.isidewith.com website. In addition to this, they completed a political view quiz. During the quiz, they asked excellent questions to monitor their comprehension of the questions. Parents, if you haven't had a chance to do so, please visit the website above and discuss the issues with your children.

FRIDAY: HILLCREST CONQUERS THE GROUSE GRIND!

Although today was a rainy day, spirits were high when we left the school for Grouse Mountain. It was a delight to see every single grade 6 and 7 student challenge themselves physically and mentally! They had set their own personal goals of what they wanted to accomplish today and they all achieved their goals! All of the teachers are proud of every single one of our students and couldn't be happier to see the proud smiles on your faces when you finished the Grouse Grind! All of you should be proud of yourselves for what you accomplished today!

#TBT Throwback Thursday to last year's Grind!

The grade 6/7 students will be ascending Grouse Mountain tomorrow. The students were all discussing their goals in class today. They ranged from beating their times from last year to simply having fun with their friends. The main purpose of this field trip is to work towards your goals in addition to the physical challenge. My goal tomorrow is to complete the Grouse Grind with a smile on my face! Remember, it doesn't matter how long it takes you to get up the mountain, the main goal for all of us is to simply complete the hike! Don't forget to pack your lunch, a light rain coat, proper runners, and some snacks. Click here in the morning to see if the Grouse Grind is open or not. I will put a new post up in the morning only if it is cancelled.

Hillcrest Elementary will be having parent teacher interviews tomorrow evening. It will give the teachers an opportunity to meet your parents and to answer any questions they may have about the class and your learning. Mr. Hong will be available from 6:00 - 6:30pm. Good work today on your think-pair-share activities! You were all able to brainstorm awesome ideas, have meaningful discussions with your group members, and you also shared your great ideas with the class. The checklist you generated for your classroom jobs was excellent!

I'm looking forward to helping all of you learn this year. I hope you are all excited to be a part of division 4! Let's get the year started off on the right foot! Let's all be wonderful Hillcrest students!

California Kickball

Today, students learned about digital citizenship, math, grammar, and fine arts. They spent each block with a different teacher and ended the day with a choice of different sports to play outside. The students are rotating from teacher to teacher and will have their home room teacher's decided by Monday of next week. We are all looking forward to an awesome year of learning together!
