Adaptations Song

Today, the students continued working on their posters for their adaptations project. It is their final display of learning. They have worked for a few weeks on learning research skills and being able to find reliable information according to a reliability test. Some students are creating posters as discussed in class and some students have chosen to go the digital route. However you display your learning is up to you.

1.) MATH: No HW.

2.) LA: No HW

3.) SCIENCE/SOCIALS: Feel free to work on your adaptations project by drawing your three pictures or by creating labels for your poster. You can simply cut them out, border them, and glue them to your poster in school tomorrow.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

What is your definition of what an adaptation is?
What are the learning intentions of this adaptations project?
What things must you include on your project (presentation of learning/research)?
How do you know you must include these things?
How does a criteria sheet help you learn and do well?
Give one student some feedback about their response.
Edit/revise your post based on the feedback you receive or based on your own self-assesment.

Halloween Door Decorating Contest

Today, we started the day off by continuing our lesson from yesterday on careers. The students blogged about their future jobs on yesterday's post. Today, the students did a little goal setting and listed 2 short term goals and 1 long term goal. They explained the what, when, the how, and the why! In order to achieve their goals, they need to work hard to achieve them through the steps they outlined.

1.) MATH: Complete any unfinished work in your ratio booklet.

2.) SCIENCE/SOCIALS: If you haven't shared it with me on Google Docs, you must do so right away. Please do not share it with me twice.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

The lyrics to 'I KNOW I CAN' are very powerful. What do they mean to you? Explain in paragraph form.

Give another student some feedback.

Today, we learned about different careers that are out there. We had a long discussion about working hard to reach your goals. Nothing in life is easy. One of your goals could be to do well in school. To do this, you need to keep up with your schoolwork and work hard to do well. Whatever your goal is, you need to work hard to achieve it. I was pleased to see you all understand the importance of working hard to achieve your goals!

2.) SCIENCE/SOCIALS: Continue working on research based on your criteria sheet.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Based on our lesson on careers today, what do you want to be when you grow up?

List at least one reason about how you could help other people with this career.
Give some feedback to another student.
Edit/revise your post based on the feedback you receive or on your own self-assessment.

Criteria Sheet and Peer assessment

Today, our 'PASSION PROJECT FILM FESTIVAL' started! We had an opportunity to watch a few finished projects by some of our students. We were blown away by the amount of time, effort, and work that the students have all put into these assignments. I can't wait to see the rest of them over the next few days.

1.) MATH: no hw

2.) Socials/Science: Continue your adaptations research. All of your CRAAP details should be finished for tomorrow. Refer to yesterday's post for details.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today's post a response assignment is being assessed. If you do not complete it, you will not receive an assessment on FreshGrade.
Listen to this YouTube link without watching the actual video. (VERY IMPORTANT - Do not watch the video as this is a visualization activity)
List five things you heard and 5 things you visualized when you heard the sounds. Use your background knowledge to make some connections!
Comment on two other responses and give them some feedback on what they can do to improve their writing (capitals, spelling, sentence structure, grammar, etc)
Edit/revise your original post based on the feedback you received or your self-assessment.
Reread today's post a response assignment.

Ali learned how to visualize to deepen his understanding in class today! ;-)

Today, the students continued learning how to deepen their understanding through visualizations. They listened to an audio recording of scary Halloween sounds. Some students were very frightened from the visualizations they made after hearing the scary recording. Some students even jumped out of their seats at certain points during the lesson. I'm sure some students will never forget today's lesson! ;-)

1.) Socials/Science Research:

Continue working on your research. You must have the following completed for tomorrow:
All of your research you've been working on up to this point. You should all have at least

     3 different adaptations for your organism.
   - Complete the C.R.A.A.P. test for 3 different sources you used. Remember, you only have to
     answer one question from each of the parts of the C.R.A.A.P. test.
   - If you have any questions, please post them here.

2.) PASSION PROJECTS:

Click here to hand in your Passion Project. Put your first name only on any slide and also paste the address (shared link) to your Animoto on this Google Slideshow link.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

In paragraph format, answer the following questions:
What was the learning intention?

What did you see?
What were 2 connections you had to the audio recording?
What frightened you?

Passion Projects are Due Tomorrow

The class had another opportunity to watch some of the passion projects their classmates created. They took from it some amazing ideas of how to be more creative with their projects. The students who showed their trailers received feedback from the class so they had some things they could improve based upon the success criteria. We are all looking forward to everyone's final projects which they will hand in tomorrow. For those of you creating paper portfolios for your passion project, please do your best to hand it tomorrow.

Learning How to Improve

The students completed their self-assessments today for their onomatopoeia art assignment. The students understand the importance and power of learning intentions and success criteria. From their work, they could easily see how feedback helped improve their work. I'm proud to be your teacher everyone! Keep up the wonderful work!

BE A GOOD CITIZEN

IMPORTANT: READ AND COMPLETE EVERYTHING ON TODAY'S POST

Today, we revisited the class rules and did a lot of work on respecting one another. We discussed examples of what it looks like to be a good citizen and brainstormed ideas of how we can be better citizens of K.B. Woodward and the community. The students had a lot to say and were able to draw on their personal experiences during the writing activity. We are looking forward to seeing some good citizenship throughout the school year.

1.) MATH: No homework. Feel free to work on the fraction sheets if you like.

2.) Evolution/Adaptation research project:

Continue researching your organism. Click here in case you forgot your criteria sheet at school.
Remember, you must include at least 4 separate adaptations your organism has made. I changed it from 5 because I thought that might be a little too much.
Don't forget to keep track of your sources of information according to the criteria sheet.

3.) Personal Information forms are overdue.

4.) Passion Trailer Projects:

It is due on Monday. This will be your last feedback session and then you will hand in your final copy after you make your final edits, on Tuesday.
I will not accept any excuses if you do not have it at school on Monday.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Post 2 different sources of information for your research.
This can include a website, a YouTube video, a book, an online newspaper article, etc.
After posting each source, YOU MUST explain the different 'ADAPTATIONS' your animal has made over time. For example, Jagger told the class about what he learned about whales and how he read they had legs many years ago. Explain why your animal was different and why it has changed up until present day.
YOU MUST GIVE FEEDBACK TO AT LEAST ONE OTHER STUDENT! Give at least one student something they could improve on. This can include more detailed information, specific spelling mistakes, etc. This is being assessed for your interim report card.
YOU MUST ALSO EDIT/REVISE your original post (reply to it) by responding to the feedback or by self-assessing your own work and adding to your original post or improving it some way.

Practicing Research Skills

Research Skills

Today, students were able to see an example of how to research any topic they are interested in. They learned a little about primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. They also learned an effecient way to keep track of all their sources by using the Google Research Toolbar which they have recently changed to the Google Drive Explore Tool. They will have an opportunity to use their new research skills they learned in class to research the evolution of any species they choose.

1.) MATH: No HW.

2.) Passion Trailer: Be sure to preview, save and finalize your videos from home tonight so you can access it from the class computer tomorrow.

3.) WRITING: Complete editing and revising your hook directly on your Google Doc.

4.) Personal information forms are due!

While creating your passion trailer, list two family members you spoke to about things you included in your family/culture section.
What did they teach you about your family and your culture?
Comment on at least one other person's post. Give them feedback on their spelling, capitals, vocabulary, etc.
Respond to any feedback you received and edit/revise your original post.

Today, we revisited the R.O.L.E.S. and also discussed what it would actually look like within our classroom. Students shared their examples and we took time out of our day to discuss this at length. The students recognize that to be able to move their desks into a more collaborative arrangement, they must first show they can work independently without any distractions. Until this happens, students will sit in rows.

1.) MATH: Quiz tomorrow on fractions, percents, and decimals.

2.) GRAD HOODIES: Tomorrow is the last day to bring your money to school.

3.) PERSONAL INFORMATION FORMS: Bring the completed forms to school tomorrow.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Post an example of how not to behave in class and why you should never behave this way. Also, be sure to include how you should behave in class.
Reply to at least one other student's post a response comment by providing another reason that supports their thinking.
Show your parents your comments that you posted tonight.

Desk Name Cards

Making new friends does not come easy for everyone. Next week, try talking and collaborating with someone different in our class to learn something new about them. I am sure you will all learn a lot about your classmates next week once you start giving each other feedback on your passion projects. Click here to see what the Kid President has to say about making new friends.

1.) MATH: Complete booklets on fractions/decimals/percents. Quiz on Wednesday.

2.) LA/ART: Most students have finished their colouring of their onomatopoeia art. If you have yet to do this, make sure you have completed this for Tuesday.

3.) Grade 7 Hoodies: Bring your forms and your money by Tuesday.

4.) PASSION TRAILER/ME PROJECT:

Have all your images uploaded by Tuesday. You will complete your peer-assessments in class on Tuesday.
Post your questions here if you have any.
Your first draft that will receive feedback is due on Tuesday.

Being aware of what you are learning

Today, students learned how to assess their own work. They compared their first draft of their Roy Lichtenstein pop art with the criteria for the assignment. They not only checked to see they had completed everything that was required, they also wrote down some notes on what they will have to do to improve their work on their final draft. They will be working on their final drafts while referring back to their self assessment sheets to ensure they are creating a quality piece of work.

1.) MATH: No homework.

2.) LA/ART:

Continue working on your Roy Lichtenstein inspired pop art.
Be sure to compare your final draft with your first draft and to make sure you are following the criteria and your self-assessment sheet.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Based on your self-assessment of your pop art project today, write a paragraph on how you plan on improving your original draft when completing your final draft.
Be sure to refer back to the learning intentions and explain if you have met them.
Be sure to write about everything you will do to improve your work.
Give another student one suggestion on how to improve their post.
Respond to any feedback given to you and edit/revise your post.

Learning how to use Google Drive!

Today, we had a class discussion about behaviour outside of lesson and work time. Many students seem to think that transition periods between lessons is a time to socialize with their peers in a manner that disrupts the learning in the class. Because of this, we have assigned different students in all corners of the classroom to be the leaders. They will make sure the students are all being mindful at all times.

1.) MATH:

Complete the fractions to decimals questions on both sides of your worksheet. YOU MUST SHOW ALL YOUR WORK.
You have a short quiz on this topic tomorrow. All work must be shown.Click here to see a video of how to do this in case you forgot.

2.) L.A./ART: Rough draft of your onomatopoeia artwork MUST be completed tomorrow so you can get feedback on it.
