SOAR ASSEMBLY

Be Humble

Today, we had our first VIRTUAL SOAR ASSEMBLY. Students who have been 'SOARING' in the school have been receiving SOAR tickets. These tickets will be put towards earning a 'SOAR DAY'. Students will have some free time once it is earned to play collaborative games with their classmates. In the afternoon, students reviewed for tomorrow's evaluations. The Paragraph writing evaluation has been postponed until Monday.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH: unit test tomorrow.
2.) LA/WRITING: Paragraph writing evaluation on Monday

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) MATH: Complete all review sheets/mark/correct. Questions will be answered prior to the test.

GOAL SETTING

S.M.A.R.T. GOALS

Today, students continued working on their 'SMART' goals in preparation for next week's goal-setting conferences. We will continuing setting our goals this week to discuss with parents at the conferences. Between recess and lunch we continued reviewing for Friday's Math test. In the afternoon, we learned how to create 'COLOURFUL' sentences from simple 'BASE' sentences. We also dove into the classroom economy and started assigning jobs to students.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH: TEST ON FRIDAY
2.) PARAGRAPH WRITING: EVALUATION on Friday.
3.) CONFERENCES: Parents, don't forget to schedule a time to meet.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

Constable Ryan

Today, we were lucky to be visited by Constable Ryan of the VPD. He gave us a presentation on pedestrian safety. He taught us what to look for, how to be safe, and some things we can do to stay out of harms way. It gave our students a refresher on how to stay safe in the day of distracted driving and distracting walking. Later, we worked on paragraph writing, factor rainbows, and multiplication arrays. Students are all looking forward to the evaluations on Friday for LA/WRITING and MATH.

IMPORTANT:

INQUIRY

10/25/2021

Today, we started to learn more about the inquiry process and how that will look this year. One key learning point today was on 'QUESTIONS'. We learned there are simple questions and deep thinking questions. Students looked at example questions and then worked on coming up with some inquiry questions that they might use for their mini-inquiry assignment. Students will work on their sub-questions for homework tonight if they did not finish them in class.

IMPORTANT:

THE BIG SHAKE OUT!

Today, students continued extending their learning in writing! We learned about identifying appropriate and engaging topic sentences! We reviewed examples and types, then students completed an activity on Topic sentences. Later, we learned about who Dorothy Vaughan, show she was, and what she accomplished. Students, be sure to share what you learned with your parents this weekend! Who was she? What did she accomplish? Who was she known as? How did she pave the way for visible minorities in the field of aeronautics? At the end of the day, we had our 'BIG SHAKE OUT' drill. Students followed procedures and protocols so they are prepared in the event of an earthquake.

Autum Vibes

Today, we learned about 7 different types of engaging hooks/topic sentences. We learned about questions, descriptive words, a short story, statistics, etc. Here is the link to the different ones we learned. Later, students continued working on LCM, GCF, and prime factorization. In the afternoon, students worked on 'setting a purpose' and 'making connections' with scary Halloween sounds. Hopefully it didn't scare them too much!

Today, we started learning French. Students were introduced to some basic French greetings and played a game of 'WHO AM I', but in French of course. It was an active game that required French communication skills, French reading skills, and body movement. In addition to this, students uploaded some learning artifacts to their FreshGrade digital portfolios. We also co-created success criteria for what should be included in their learning reflections. Parents, you should be able to view their learning reflections on FreshGrade now.

IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS: Please check out your child's digital portfolio and comment on their learning reflections when you have a moment.

PLANNER:

Today, students started the day off by building on their powers of observation. More specifically, they took qualitative and quantitative observations of their ecosystems! Students observed how to use the scales and took accurate measurements using the weight system. They also used their senses to make their observations. Later, they completed their science quiz and had a lesson on prime and composite numbers. In the afternoon, they finished off the literacy component of the FSA.

IMPORTANT:
1.) HOODIES: Make sure you pay for your hoodie if you have not yet done so. This will help us avoid any delays.
2.) HOMEWORK: Those students who did not mark/correct their homework over the weekend, be sure to do this and bring it back to school tomorrow.

Learning with Ozobots!

This week was a busy week. In addition to completing part of the FSAs, we also finished up our Plant I.D. projects and starting moving on our ecosystems scientific inquiry! We learned how to make detailed observations and how to track them in order to synthesize and evaluate the data when it comes time to do so. We also dove deep into paragraph writing. We will be focusing on paragraph writing for the next few weeks as we have done since September.

SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATIONS

Today, the majority of students had their vaccinations updated. Some students will update them at their family doctor's office. We know, according to science, that vaccinations can prevent viruses. Later, we brainstormed words and phrases we could use to thank healthcare workers that work in the oncology department at a local hospital. We also came up with simple criteria for these thank you cards as a class. In the afternoon, students were energized with enthusiasm when they were given an opportunity to make their qualitative and quantitative observations of their ecosystems.

Today, students completed the online math and literacy components of the FSA. They were asked to do their best to self-regulate today as I was attending a workshop. I am looking forward to hearing how you all did today in my absence! The true test of self-regulation in our class is if you can do it when I am not there. I believe in all of you and know you did a great job! I can't wait to read the note from the teacher! You all make me proud to be your teacher on a daily basis! Keep up the wonderful work!

For example - I made a connection to the book I'm reading because it reminded me of this holiday I went on in Hawaii. The beaches described in the novel really allowed me to visualize the beaches I visited when I was in Maui a few years ago. I felt like I was there again!

Today, we started the day off by reviewing the PAR from the weekend. We also read a few responses and gave two students some descriptive feedback on how they could improve their paragraphs. Assessing work using success criteria always helps students see what they can improve on. Later in the morning, students started the FSA. They completed the first section of the written math component. Tomorrow, they will do the online math component. In Science, students learned about qualitative and quantitative observations. Students also learned what observations they will be taking of their ecosystems projects.

IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS - FSA's will be administered over the next week or so.
2.) CARIBOU MATH CONTEST - Those participating will meet in the library at 8:00am tomorrow.

ECOSYSTEMS PROJECT

Friday was a full day of learning! The school year started about a month ago. Expectations and routines were created and set. Students understand what is expected of them and their learning. The Big 6 Learning Principles is alive and well in division 1! It is shaping up to be an excellent school year! This morning we started the day with our individual class photos and then put the final touches on our plant I.D. projects. In the afternoon, we collected organisms for our ecosystems project by finding specimens from the schoolyard!

IMPORTANT:
1.) FSA - We will be starting our FSA standardized testing this coming week.

2.) BODY SCIENCE - Parents please ask your child about what they learned. Use the workshop as a way to open up the conversation with your child.

Draft 1: 100 Hong Bucks

Today, we learned about financial literacy and how our classroom economy is going to work. We brainstormed what comes to mind when we think of the economy and we reviewed some possible jobs that students could take on within our classroom. Over the next week, students will apply for jobs and create rules and processes for how our classroom economy will work. Students were excited to receive their first $100 Hong Bucks today. DON'T FORGET TOMORROW IS INDIVIDUAL PHOTO DAY! DRESS APPROPRIATELY!

IMPORTANT:
1.) SCIENCE: Plant I.D. projects are due tomorrow.
2.) FORMS: FreshGrade forms should be returned by tomorrow.

Today, students participated in the Saleema Noon Body Science Workshop. Some topics that were discussed included: the human body, laws of consent, what the research tells us, gender, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. Please be sure to ask your child about what was discussed and use it as a learning opportunity for your child.

Today I want you to think about a time you learned about something or how to so something, and then explain the process of learning it. Then write a BIG question with sub-questions for the little inquiry (Just like we did in the library)

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

EXAMPLE: Something I learned is how to juggle. I had always wanted to juggle ever since I was in elementary school when my mother gave me a set of juggling balls. I never did learn as a kid. I started by looking at a juggling book that came with the set I bought. Then started watching juggling tutorial videos on You tube. After this, I practiced everyday for 15 minutes. Eventually I could juggle. After awhile I bought a nice set of juggling balls.

BIG QUESTION: How can I lean to juggle?
SUB-QUESTIONS:
- What do I need to juggle?
- How long will it take to learn?
- Which videos are best to watch?
- Do better juggling balls make juggling easier?
- What position do you hold your arms?
