Remember, you must always support your opinions/statements with supporting evidence/examples.

In a brief paragraph, explain if this is a chemical or a physical change.

Today, you learned about physical and chemical changes. You saw a demonstration outside of a chemical change. Mr. Fisher combined several different chemicals and a new substance was formed. What did you notice before, during, and after the chemical reaction was complete? These are all questions that can be answered using the background knowledge you gained during the lesson today!

After explaining what each is, give at least one example of both types of changes with supporting details.

Throwback to yesterday's massive dodgeball game!

Today, the students had a 'HOOT' using Kahoot to complete their quiz on the Particle Theory of Matter. Many students were quite engaged in the quiz as it was more like a fun game. Each question had a time limit and you could also see how many students had answered each question in real time. Needless to say, it became a little competitive for the students.

1.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Continue working on your edits/revisions.
Final draft is due on Friday.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Here is your Belief Systems Assignment Handout and Rubric in case you forgot it at school.
Digital resource - Worldbook Online: WorldBook. Feel free to use this to research the different belief systems.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Using Kahoot created a great deal of competition and stress among the students.
In paragraph form, write about if you enjoyed this or not and include three things you feel contributed to this.
Back up your opinions with supporting examples.

CHEMISTRY

Today, we started learning about Chemistry with division 1. You learned about elements, compounds, and the different states of matter. We also learned that different states of matter have different amounts of space between the particles. Today's PAR will require you to complete a couple virtual activities online. I have provided the links below. Remember, an important thing to remember is that you must read the instructions in order to be able to complete the tutorials. If you don't read the instructions, it likely won't make any sense to you. They require 'FLASH' so it won't work on an iPad/iPod/iphone. Use a computer or other tablet.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete your second draft of your powerful response. Most of you completed this for today. You have one more day to improve it until we work on our final edits to be handed in on Friday.

3.) POST A RESPONSE FOR DIVISION 1 AND 2:

Watch this video on the states of matter. You have a quiz tomorrow on the characteristics of the three states of matter listed in this video. This will be posted on FreshGrade.

POWERFUL RESPONSE

Friday was a fun filled day of learning. The students participated in their final day of the Mousetrap Car challenge and had an opportunity to display their creations and their learning. Throughout the process, they were creative, thought critically, communicated, and collaborated with their peers. In addition to this, they repeatedly revised their designs based on self-assessments and feedback from others. The learning process was alive and well in Division 1 and 2! NOTE - The website is currently not working properly. Messages cannot be posted.

1.) BABY PHOTOS:

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Your second draft of your powerful response, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions is due on Monday.
As discussed on Friday, you must completely edit/revise your powerful response based on the peer feedback you received last week.
Half of your received teacher feedback and the other half will receive feedback this week.

Arts Umbrella - Outside In

Today, we took the skytrain and walked along the seawall on our way to Granville Island. We enjoyed a mindful walk and enjoyed the performance at the Arts Umbrella theatre. Outside In was a performance that many students could relate to. It touched on some themes that many students are familiar with. Today's post a response asks that you reflect on the performance. Here is a link to ARTS UMBRELLA and the programs they offer.

This means, you must make all your edits/revisions/changes based on the peer feedback. Use the descriptive feedback on your Google Documents and rubrics to improve your work.

It was an exciting day today! The students started testing out their mousetrap cars in the gym. A few of them made it the entire length of the gym. Some students learned a few new things about their designs and decided to make the necessary adjustments. We will have our final competition on Friday.

FIELD TRIP TOMORROW: Be sure to bring your bus fare / compass card and your lunch or money for lunch tomorrow. We will be heading to Granville island after the bell rings. DON'T BE LATE!

How far will yours go?

Today, students had their final class to work on their mousetrap cars. I overheard one student say, "I didn't redo mine once!" Then, the student also said, "I redid mine five times!" This student understood the importance of self-assessment and feedback. This student and his partner went back to the drawing board to improve on their designs through ongoing self, peer, and teacher feedback. They are good models of the learning process! BRAVO! BRAVO!

1.) MATH: Complete worksheet 7.5 on Congruence and Similarity.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Make sure your first draft of your powerful response is ready for tomorrow. You will be switching with a neighbour and giving one another peer feedback using the rubric.
Specific feedback will be given directly on your Google Docs.
Rubrics will be highlighted.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

How many times have you re-assessed your mousetrap car and changed your design plans?
Why did you change your design plans?
What are three things you did to your design to make it better? Explain.

PAR FEEDBACK POLICE: Eknoor, Stephanie, Miles, and Sofia. The students listed will give specific feedback to all students who post based on the givens (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc). If one student receives feedback from one of the 4 students, you do not have to give this student more feedback. So each student above should give feedback to about 7 students each.

ABC COLLAGE

Tomorrow is sports day! Don't forget to wear your team colours, paint your faces, colour your hair, or anything else you think would help your team stay energized tomorrow! If the weather holds, don't forget to bring plenty of fluids, appropriate clothing, hats, and sunscreen. It is easy to become dehydrated in this weather and also to get sun/heat stroke.

POWERFUL RESPONSE WRITING

A creative display of learning!

Today, we reviewed the learning intentions and success criteria for the powerful responses. We also looked at a quality example written by one of your classmates. Afterwards, we discussed the major areas where most students struggled with their previous powerful response. One important trait of good writing is 'FLUENCY'. Your powerful response should be easy to read, have different sentence beginnings, include both long and short sentences, and include transitions that makes the writing flow smoothly. I look forward to seeing more improvements on your next one!

The Raven and the First men

Story telling is an important part of all cultures.Today, many of you shared stories from your upbringings. It was interesting to learn that all cultures have similar stories with similar messages. We learned that the stories that are passed down from generation to generation all have a 'BIG IDEA'. You learned about Indigenous stories from Canada (The Raven and the First Men), the indigenous story from Australia (Rainbow Serpent), the Christian story, and the Islamic Creation story. Today's post a response will be related to what you learned in class today.

Happy Mother's Day!

You all worked really hard this week on many different things. You pushed your learning in:
- Novel Approach Book Club conversations
- You learned how to enhance your perspective photos and your pencil to pixel assignments by using digital tools
- You created 3D perspective Mother's Day Cards
- You used science, technology, engineering, and math (S.T.E.M.) to build your mousetrap cars.
- You started planning your sport's day cheers!
- You were deeply involved in our discussions about belief systems and spirituality!
WOW! That sure was a lot of learning that happened this week! I'm tired just typing it! ;-)

The majority of you have uploaded your Pencil to Pixel collages to the Google Drive folder. If you haven't, you must do this over the weekend.
Also, upload your pencil image, fine-lined image, and any collage drafts to your FreshGrade.
Please also update your ABC PHOTO COLLAGE on FreshGrade or you will receive an incomplete.

PENCIL TO PIXELS

Today, students started the day by working on their pencil to pixel projects. They have been working hard on creating their Andy Warhol inspired collages. Each collage should display their hand drawn self-portrait, a digitally fine-lined version, and multiple versions using the pop culture Warhol style. If you haven't uploaded your final collage yet, it must be completed tonight. Click here to upload your final collage. Feel free to upload multiple versions if you like.

Churchill Drama Presentation

Pencil to Pixel - By Hana

Today, we visited Churchill for a 'Shakespeare Shakedown' presentation by the drama students. It was a modern take on Shakespeare's classic plays. The high school students did a great job acting and presenting their understanding of Shakespeare. Afterwards, they continued working on their Sport's Day cheers with their teams. It looks like their plans are taking shape and Sport's day is looking to be a fun one
