Thursday: Sports, Ratios, Percentages, and Statistics!

This morning, students eagerly jumped (figuratively and literally) into the gymnastic activities.

After recess, students continued their percentage calculations using sports statistics; they were quite engaged in seeing the practical application of percentages!

1.) MATH 6: Based on your research, calculate the percentage of wins, losses, and overtime games for 3 NEW teams. You must clearly show your information in a well organized table such as this one Ms. Fei created. You can use this as a model for your table or you can draw your own on paper. Watch this video. There WILL be a quiz on MONDAY based on the video!

Challenge: Place all your data and calculations on a neatly organized spreadsheet. HINT - Formatting the cells will allow you to automatically calculate percentages!

MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) LA:

Open your Google Document with your New Years' Resolution Essay and title it "Draft 1- New Years' Resolution Essay"
Copy and paste your New Years' Resolution Essay into a new Google Document, and title the new document "Draft 2- New Years' Resolution Essay".
Based on your self-assessment, make revisions in "Draft 2- New Years' Resolution Essay" to improve your essay.
(In case you are wondering, we want you to make revisions on a different document, so that later on, we can look back and see all the improvements you made!)

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit Bobby Orr's Learning Journey and read/browse through it.
Leave at least 3 comments for him!

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Post 2 specific strengths of your writing and 2 specific ways you can improve your writing.

Wednesday: Clinchers

Today, students learned that an ending rounds out writing, ties up details, and leaves the reader with a feeling of satisfaction and resolution. They learned about a few different techniques which included the following:

a laugh
a challenge to take action
a literary device, such as a metaphor
a surprise
a quote or profound thought

1.) MATH 6:

Use your research skills and FInd the statistics for 3 professional sports teams. You can choose any sport you like. Find the total number of games played, the number of games won, and the number of games lost.
Write down the part to whole ratios for a.) number of games won to total games and b.) the number of games lost to total games. Clearly indicate which ratio is which.
Calculate the percentages and show exactly how you calculated them. You should have 2 percentages for each team.

MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit Sponge Bob's Learning Journey and read/browse through it.
Leave some questions/comments/feedback on at least 5 different pages. No need to leave comments on any of his Gr. 6 portfolio items.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Based on what you learned in class today, Post your 'CLINCHER' for your concluding paragraph here. You must also include your restatement from yesterday.
Create a new document and organize your writing into 5 paragraphs
Copy and paste your name, essay title, and complete essay (5 paragraphs) to this file on Google Drive.

Tuesday: Concluding Paragraphs

Today, the students learned how to restate their thesis statements in their concluding paragraphs. They learned that the basic way to do this is to review the content of their topic and main points but making sure that it is not redundant. Tomorrow, they will complete self and peer assessments using criteria sheets so they can see what they can do to improve their writing. They love receiving feedback!

1.) MATH 6: Complete the Mid-Chapter review (text) and mark it at home. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Today, you learned that Apple is being proactive and doing their best to improve the work conditions at the companies that supply them with parts for their products. Your task today is to research a company of your choice and post 2 reliable links (news and video) that show the poor conditions that exist.
Be sure to post a brief summary explaining what the articles/videos are about.

Friday: Child Labour

Over the last few days, the students reinforced their open-ended and close-ended questioning skills on the topic of 'CHILD LABOUR'. They created several 'WONDER WALLS' on Today's Meet using picture sets on this topic. The students were able to create a central location where they were able to see a constant stream of questions/comments that they created so they would be able to learn from their peers. You can see what they did here:

1.) MATH 6: Use your research skills and see if you can calculate this question. What is the formula for calculating percent? For example, If you scored 30 out of 50 on a test, what percent does that equate to? See if you can draw a picture that represents the percent. You must hand-in your home work on Monday.

2.) LA: Complete writing body paragraph 2 and 3. You will complete your assessment/feedback forms on Monday morning. It is very important you have body paragraph 1, 2, and 3 ready to go on Monday.

What did you learn from watching the two YouTube clips on 'CHILD LABOUR' today?
How did it make you feel?
Will you think twice about buying certain products made by companies that support child labour? If so, why? If not, why not?
Find another video on YouTube and post it as a new Blog Post on YOUR E-Folio / Learning Journey. Your post should include reasons why you chose this video and what people can learn from it.

Thursday: Child Labour Through Images

Seeing a candid photo of their own "morning faces" gave students a good laugh; however, it also brought to their attention how revisiting and reflecting on a situation may give them surprising information that they had not noticed before. With this segue, students began to think about revisiting their writing, noticing areas that need improvement, and revising their body paragraphs based on criteria. Students completed self- and peer-assessments to facilitate the revision process.

In social studies, photos were also used for learning purposes. Students viewed several photos related to child labour, and brainstormed questions via TodaysMeet. This will lead nicely into the social studies unit about global child labor issues.

Wednesday: Body Paragraphs

The students have been working on their 'YEAR OF THE SNAKE PROJECTS' in preparation for Chinese New Year and to learn a little bit about Chinese culture. They were all given the choice of how to create their snake and how to represent the different characteristics that it represents based on the zodiac calendar.

1.) MATH 6: Complete Chapter 6 Lesson 2 (Workbook). Complete Pg 184-185 Qu #1, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Return your Math test signed by your parents. Corrections must be completed if you want to write the retest on Friday.

MATH 7: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit the Hannah's E-folio and browse her entire site.
Leave at least 6 comments/feedback/questions for her on all of her 'Passion' Blogs

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Complete body paragraph #1 for your essay on your Google Document.
Be sure to insert the appropriate transition words for each of your supporting points (Examples, statistics, and quotes).
Don't forget to insert a concluding sentence that connects body paragraph #1 to body paragraph #2.
After completing this on your document, post it on this Google Document.

Tuesday: Topic Sentences

The students are learning about the standard 5 paragraph essay and are writing about their goals for the new year. They have learned about catchy introductions (hooks), the standard structure, plans and outlines, thesis statements, plans, and topic sentences. We will be learning more about body paragraphs tomorrow and the students will continue working on their supporting details. I'm looking forward to seeing what types of examples, statistics, and quotes the students find in their research.

1.) MATH 6: Complete workbook questions Chapter 6 Lesson #1 and Pg 180-181 Qu.# 6, 8, 10, and #14. Mark your textbook questions using the answers in the back of your textbook. Watch this video to prepare for tomorrow's class. It is about 14 minutes. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit the Overseeker's e-folio and check out his entire site.
Leave at least 3 comments/feedback/questions for him on his 'BLOG' sections

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Post your 3 topic sentence for your first, second, and third body paragraphs (ESSAY). Remember to keep it simple, include a transition word, and do not provide any of the details that will go into your supporting sentences.

Monday: Graphic Organizers (POPPLET.COM)

Today, students continued working on their essay writing. To facilitate the planning process, they created graphic organizers to visually see how the structure of their body paragraphs will unfold. It is now clear to the students what their topics and supporting points are. The students created their concept maps using the mobile Popplet app on the iPads. They are also able to create them via their website at www.popplet.com. When they begin writing their body paragraphs tomorrow, they will easily be able to expand on their plans.

Friday: Give Students Choice in how they Learn

Sunrise in Cloverdale

Happy learners are motivated learners. As a teacher, giving students more choice in how they learn and how they articulate their learning is very important. I have seen students become more inspired to learn because they were given 'CHOICE'. This week, the students were given the choice to create a representation of the 'YEAR OF THE SNAKE' using any medium. Some students are in the process of creating their projects out of clay, play-dough, digital videos, drawings, Animoto, stop-motion animation, digital art, pencil drawings, painting, music, iMovie, GarageBand, etc. It is amazing to see how personalized their learning has become.

1.) LA: Follow the instructions on the shared document (GOOGLE DRIVE). Check your e-mail or click here. If the document was not shared with you, YOU MUST POST A MESSAGE HERE so someone can share it with you.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit 3 student websites/e-folios that you have not yet commented on. Click here to see the list.
Read over each website in detail and comment/Ask Questions/Give feedback on all of their blogs/reflections.
You MUST post the code names of the 3 students who you left comments for here so I can see that you have completed your work.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Post 2 new blog posts over the weekend on your sites.
Each post should consist of approximately 1 paragraph (5-7 sentences).
In addition to this, be creative and you post a picture/video that you have taken. Do not post any images from the internet.

Thursday: Learning from Feedback

Today, students began their day with basketball dribbling drills along with a game of 'FISH TANK - Sharks vs. Guppies'! In addition to this, they continued to work on their introduction paragraphs for their New Year's resolution essays, and they received feedback from Mr. Hong and Ms. Fei on how to make their thesis statements and plans (3 points) clearer. Students also completed a math test, and continued to work on their year of the snake art. It was a busy day of learning at Hillcrest Elementary school!

1.) MATH 6 / 7 - No homework.

2.) LA - All 7 different types of introductory paragraphs must be completed by tomorrow morning. Refer to your handout/booklet.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1: Visit Sandy's photography blog on her E-Folio and give her some comments/feedback on her photography! Students from last year, be sure to comment on the composition of her photos!

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2: Watch this video and post one open-ended and one close-ended question related to what you see. Do your best to post questions that haven't been posted yet. GET CREATIVE! Remember, a close-ended question can be answered with one word, and an open-ended question needs an explanation for an answer.

Wednesday: Google Drive

Google Drive has been an unbelievable tool for our class. The students use it as their portfolios to store their work as well as artifacts of learning. From using it, the students have learned a lot of different organizational skills. In addition to this, it is the perfect platform for 21st Century learning. It fosters the growth of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. In addition to this, one student mentioned that we are caring for the environment by using less paper in class. It is amazing to see the students at work. They have their work with them 24/7 and can access their 'DRIVES' from any mobile device whenever they need.

1.) MATH 6 - TEST ON DECIMALS (Calculating/Estimating).
MATH 7 - Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) GUEST BLOG: Visit NooNoo's Webpage and write at least 2-3 comments in sections of her website that do not have comments. Don't forget to check out her reflection pages as well. If everyone does this, there will be a surprise for the entire class! Remember, feedback and good questions are always great!

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Given what you have learned about introductory paragraphs, post the following on any topic (You may not post on New Year's Resolutions):

Create a clear 'THESIS STATEMENT' and
Create a clear 'PLAN' (3 points)

Tuesday: 'PSST!' Your School! Your Culture! Your Safety!

The Gr. 6/7 students were lucky to see the 'PSST' presentation today. They are an organization that promotes safety among Surrey youth. They work exclusively with the Surrey School District and their motto on the banner of their web page is. "Your School. Your Culture. Keep it Safe!" Their presentation taught students about the different outlets and resources available to them for getting help if their safety is ever a concern. They do a lot of work with bullying issues. 1.) MATH 6 - Complete the Chapter 9 Worksheet #5 (Show all your work.

QUESTION: If you were given a gift from your parents in the amount of $96.21 and you wanted to invest in the 'YADAYADA' company, ABOUT how many shares would you be able to purchase? Assume that the 'YADAYADA' company is currently trading at $10. Explain your thought process in words and complete the question. (Hint: Use the round up and round down method to give the range)

MATH 7 - Any assigned work. Visit your math teacher's webpage.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1: Visit Rainbow Dash's website and write some comments on the artwork you see on her page. She would love it if you left her comments on at least 3 of her images. After learning about digital art in class, she asked her parents for a Bamboo Drawing tablet for her birthday so she could further develop her digital art skills!

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2: Post your second introductory paragraph only after reviewing the structure with your handout and proofreading it on your own. Remember, everyone should have different types of intro paragraphs saved to their Google Document. You will be working with these tomorrow.

4.) PE - Today we worked on dribbling drills. Watch this video to see what Jeremy Lin does to improve his dribbling abilities.

MONDAY: Introductory Paragraphs

The students dove into their writing today and learned how to identify introductory remarks, thesis statements, and plans. Afterwards, they dove a little deeper into their writing and learned about 7 different types of introductory remarks. (See Handout). Afterwards, the students worked on their introductory paragraphs using several different styles/types. Students will continue working on their essays over the next few weeks, will self and will continue to receive feedback and act on the feedback they receive to further improve their writing.

1.) MATH 6

Division handout and Pg. 307-308 Questions #1, 2, 5, and 6. (Mark answers with back of text)
Complete estimates/calculations on paper.
QUESTION: If your parents were to give you $500, estimate about how many shares of Microsoft you would be able to buy. Post your explanation in words and numbers.

MATH 7 - Any assigned work. Check your math teacher's website.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit Judy Moody's Photo Blog
Comment on at least 1 of her images and give her some feedback. Gr. 7 students, feel free to give her some suggestions on what she can do to improve on her composition based on what you learned about photography last year.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

Post one of your introductory paragraphs for your New Year's Resolution essay here. Be sure to indicate the type of intro you used for your post.
Remember to use one of the different types of introductory paragraphs that you learned about (refer to your booklet/handout)

Friday: HCP Career Cluster Collaboration

It was nice to see the division 4 students back into the swing of things after the winter holidays. The students learned a lot this week. They learned how to ask good inquiry questions in Science and also learned about how their school subjects are connected to different careers and occupations. In addition to this, the students learned about the structure of a standard 5 paragraph essay. The students have started on their introductory paragraphs and will continue working on developing their ideas over the next few weeks..

1.) MATH 6 - Update your stock portfolios.

Estimates and Calculations must be completed on paper for Friday's closing prices.
Update your Total Values on your spreadsheets.
Post your day 1 prices, total value of your stocks on Friday, and how much you profit you have made or how much money you have lost.

MATH 7 - Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) SOCIALS/ART - Be sure to bring any materials/supplies for your 'YEAR OF THE SNAKE' artwork! The dollar store has a ton of great supplies! Also, search out some apps that may be useful to you and your classmates. Post any useful ones you find here.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1: Return to yesterday's post here. Complete the following:

Read yesterday's blog assignment carefully and respond to any questions given to you.
Read the entire conversation stream and post any questions you have to your classmates.
Make sure you have completed all parts of the post in your response.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2: Post at 2-3 different posts on your websites. Be sure to include different forms of media as well. Instead of simply searching out an image from online sources, go out and take your own photos and videos about whatever it is you are writing about! Once you have posted a few different posts on your website, post the direct link here. If every student in class completes this task, there will be a prize for everyone on Monday!
