MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Chanukah, Happy Winter Solstice, and Happy holidays to everyone else! I want to thank all of the division 2 students and their families for a great start to the new school year! Students and parents have been very active in the learning this year! Also, I want to thank all students and families for their generosity this Christmas! You did not have to give me anything, but your kindness is appreciated! I'm looking forward to the new year where the learning will continue to thrive with all of our division 2 students!

IMPORTANT:

Seymour Ski School will be happening! We received approval from the district!
We will be doing some fundraising from now until the end of the school year to help reduce the cost of skiing and camping. Although we may not do much fundraising before we start skiing, you will see a reduction in our camping fees based on how much we are able to raise!

Today, we were lucky to have Ms. Gill and Ms. Rai join our class to continue our talking circle from about a week ago. It was a good opportunity for us to continue learning about inclusivity. We continued our talking circle after they left and students watched two short, but important and valuable videos. They watched 'TO THIS DAY' and 'TROLL' by Shane Koyczan. These are two poems with relevant messages for students today. Parents, please watch it with your child and discuss the content.

FUN DAY

12/18/2019

Thanks to my old students for the wonderful Xmas sweater!

Today, students enjoyed some free time in the afternoon to have fun! It was 'FUN DAY' because students earned over 1000 SOAR tickets! They were supportive, outstanding, awesome, and respectful so often this term! All teachers planned out exciting learning activities in their classrooms. These activities ranged from robotics to coding and from board games to fun art activities. Students indeed enjoyed taking a break from their classroom learning today!

Today, students continued presenting their inquiry projects on Early Humans. It was wonderful to see how far the students had come this term! They fully immersed themselves in the inquiry process from their quick mini-inquiry to their deeper inquiry projects on early humans. Students focused on developing their inquiry questions and sub questions, researching and putting together reliable information, and analyzing and synthesizing their information, and going public with a presentation of their learning. This definitely gives them a solid foundation for the rest of the school year.

3D SNOWFLAKES

3D SNOWFLAKES

Today, students enjoyed their final ice skating field trip at Sunset Community centre. Many students became much more confident in their skating skills and abilities. After recess, students learned how to make 3D snowflakes. The learning intention was 'I can follow step-by-step directions to create a 3D snowflake.' Typically, many students make some mistakes because they don't always follow the instructions. However, because the learning intentions were clear and the process was modelled to the student, fewer students made errors in their folding/cutting. I was very impressed with how the learning process helped everyone achieve success.

1.) Find a YouTube video that shows you how to make a different paper snowflake.
2.) Follow the directions and make the snowflake. YOU MUST BRING THIS TO SCHOOL
TOMORROW AS EVIDENCE YOU COMPLETED THIS TASK. Alternatively, you can upload
an image to FreshGrade under the activity 'SNOWFLAKE PAR'.
3.) Write a standard paragraph outlining the steps in how to make this snowflake. Don't forget to
use transitions for each of your steps.
4.) Read your paragraph after you post it check to see if it flows smoothly.
5.) Check for the givens/conventions (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, etc)
6.) Edit/revise your original post.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAELYN!

The students performed at our 2019 Christmas concert! It was clear you worked hard with Ms. Chung to learn how to play the ukulele! Shout outs to all of you! Well done! Don't forget, you must be ready to present your inquiry on Monday. We will present Monday - Wednesday. In addition to this, your intro paragraph and 3 body paragraphs are due on Monday. Be sure to follow the criteria.

Complete your intro and 3 body paragraphs (drafts). You worked on them all last week.
Respond to all feedback received on your essay files.
You will have a 1 on 1 conference with Mr. Hong this week to help you with your writing if you haven't already.

3.) SOCIALS/INQUIRY:

Presentations of your inquiries starts on Monday!

4.) FRESHGRADE:

Make any necessary updates. Share with your parents.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

We have been learning about multiplying decimals in class.
Based on this video, what is something new you learned about multiplying numbers like 9 X 0.6?
This will be posted to FreshGrade next week for completion.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) You clearly EXPLAIN a strategy discussed in the video on how to multiply decimals.
2.) You create YOUR OWN multiplication question and EXPLAIN STEP BY STEP how to solve it
using this strategy.
3.) You double check the answer of one of your peers and either confirm their answer is correct, or
give them feedback on what they need to fix.

Hungry, hungry, hippo!

Today, we started the day off with a quick assessment in PHE. Students were prepped for it before we went down to the gym with clear learning intentions and success criteria. I did not say a word during the warm up and stretch and was very impressed with the self-regulation. The learning intention was 'I can self-regulate during the class warm-up and group stretch.' It was apparent that the clear expectations resulted in most students achieving success with their self-regulation! Make the destination clear for students and they will have a better chance of reaching success!

1.) SOCIALS/INQUIRY:

Complete your inquiry presentations by tomorrow so you can improve it over the weekend.
Follow the Going Public Criteria handout closely.

2.) LA/WRITING:

Continue working on your body paragraphs and your intro paragraph.
Be sure to follow your criteria sheet.

3.) SCIENCE: Watch this video to prepare for tomorrow.

4.) PAR:

After you have completed the work above, post a message here stating what you got done.

Getting ready to 'GO PUBLIC!'

Today, students were busy working hard on their synthesis, analysis, and going public presentations. Students have chosen the method they want to present with. They are busy collaborating and putting their learning together in a thoughtful presentation. We are looking forward to seeing how the students have improved in the inquiry process compared to their mini-inquiry they completed last month.

IMPORTANT: Watch this video on 'THE IMPORTANCE OF EMPATHY' with a parent. Have a discussion about it. We will do an activity in class on empathy tomorrow.

1.) MATH: HW Check tomorrow. We didn't do have math class today.

2.) LA/WRITING:

Use your criteria sheet and write your intro paragraphs and body paragraphs on your Google Docs.
Respond to any teacher or peer feedback.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Show your parents how you did on your Math test (Fractions) on FreshGrade.
Ask them to log into their account and review it.
Ask them to post a comment on the math activity and any other activities they have not yet seen. They are free to comment in their preferred language.

Talking Circles with Ms. Gill

Today, we were lucky to have the inclusivity teacher from the district present to our class today. She taught students about the purpose about talking circles and she ran one with the class. This indigenous practice of problem solving helps people solve problems. Talking about problems, feelings, and solutions often helps everyone feel better about what is going on.

1.) MATH: Be ready to have your HW checked in class tomorrow from yesterday. Be sure to ask questions about any misunderstandings.

MULTIPLYING DECIMALS UNDER 1.0

MOSAIC TILE ART

Today, students learned how to multiply decimals under 1.0 using 10 Grids. They learned that 1 single square = 0.01 and 1 row = 0.10. Click here to review today's lesson using the 10 grids. Refer to slide 1 through 6 for today's lesson. Remember, when you shade in the first number vertically, the second number should be shaded in horizontal (and vice versa).

IMPORTANT:

High school applications are not due until January. Parents, keep in mind your child has to apply to their home catchment high school. Be aware that Churchill did not accept any out of boundary students last year.

1.) MATH:

Complete 3.3 of Math Focus.
- Some students must only complete questions #1 and 4. You know who you are!
Mark and Correct at home. Come to school with your questions. We will go over them before the new math lesson tomorrow to clarify any misunderstandings.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

If you didn't complete everything from the weekend's Google Doc PAR for your essay, make sure you complete that before you do anything. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Do not move onto the steps below until you have completed everything posted this weekend!

FOOD BANK DONATIONS

Today, students did a great job by exceeding all expectations! Never have I seen so many students bring in the number of donations like they did over the past few weeks. Shouts to all of you and your families! Without your generosity, some people who are unable to afford food would not be able to have enough food to feed themselves! Later on Friday, students used some elbow grease and polished their tile mirrors, sanded some of the excess grout, and cleaned off their mirrors. They will now be on display over the next week or so.

1.) MATH: If you didn't finish pg 104-105 on Thursday, be sure to complete it.

2.) LA/WRITING: To be updated.

3.) FRESHGRADE: Make any necessary updates (learning artifacts, reflections, self-assessments, evaluations, etc.)

Your job this weekend is to complete the following:

1.) Create a Google Doc and title it 'First Name's 5 P essay'.
2.) Share this with '[email protected]' and make sure you give me access to 'EDIT'.
3.) Also share it with your 'FEEDBACK BUDDY' from your table group. If you don't know their Gmail
  address, be sure to contact them and ask them for it. Give your buddy access to 'COMMENT'.
3.) Copy and paste your brainstorming, your body paragraph outline, and your 3 examples hooks. (Click on the links to access the specific PARS where you typed your essay work so you can
copy and paste your essay work onto your Google Doc).
4.) Organize your work under the following headings (copy and paste):

Today, students learned about different types of hooks they can use for their essays. They had time to practice making 3 different ones related to their essay topics. STUDENT SELF-ASSESSMENT

Engaged in self-assessment!

Today, we read a picture book, The Incredible Freedom Train, to the students. Following this, students completed a visible thinking activity using their reading/comprehension strategies. Afterwards, they used their self-assessment rubrics and highlighted the areas where they felt they were in their learning. This data will be used to compare with their results at the end of the school year. The purpose is to see how they improve with their ability to self-assess their work using learning intentions and success criteria.

IMPORTANT: Only 2 more days left to donate food! The count is up to 170! Let's all bring at least one tomorrow and one on Friday. If we do this, we will get to 230!

1.) MATH:

If you didn't complete yesterday's math, be sure to get it done.
Visit this link and play one adding decimals game and one subtracting decimals game. Post a comment about which games you played and how you did.

2.) FRENCH: Test tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

You have been learning about essay structure over the last couple weeks. You have learned about the structure and what goes inside of each paragraph.
For your PAR today, I want you to type out your outline.

SUCCESS CRITERIA
1.) Type out your Intro paragraph outline and include the following in point form or sentences.

- Thesis statement
2.) Type out your body paragraph outline (for all 3 body paragraphs) in point form.

This morning, students completed a self-assessment to see if they completed their daily work. They Clicked on this link and completed the HW Integrity Check. About 75% of the students completed all required work. We will definitely work towards improving this number. We will do another check tomorrow. Tomorrow's results will be shared with the parents. There will be iPads waiting at the front door for you when you arrive to complete your HW check.

IMPORTANT:

Your synthesis/analysis handout is due on Friday. You will have time tomorrow to work on it.

You are starting your science unit by learning the basic vocabulary related to the scientific method.
You must know these words in order to take part in Science this year.
For today's PAR, choose 4-5 words and write a short paragraph that makes sense based on the definitions.

SUCCESS CRITERIA
1.) Paragraph format

HEY, YO! HOMEWORK CHECK!

Self-Assessments w/ Mrs. Tan's class

"Hey, yo! HOMEWORK CHECK!". The expectation in Gr. 7 is that you complete your daily work. This includes any work that was not completed in class and any assigned work on the class website. Tomorrow, there will be an iPad at the front door. You will have to complete a self-assessment of your homework and it will be verified in class before the day gets started. Parents, please ensure you are checking to see your child has completed their work on a daily basis.

IMPORTANT:

Please bring one food donation tomorrow! The Food drive ends on Friday! Let's feed as many people as we can!

Parents, please check to make sure your child is completing their work on a daily basis.

1.) MATH:

Play Puppy Chase and post how you did and what you thought of the game.

2.) FRESHGRADE: Make updates do your FreshGrade (Learning reflections and updating your ADST/CODING activities.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Come up with three essay topics ideas.
For each of the topics, come up with 3 sub-topics that you feel you can write about.
For each of the subtopics, list one example.
Remember, choose topics that you have some background knowledge in. These will be writing topics that you will be able to write about more easily.

EXAMPLE:
1.) Ways to reduce Global Warming
- Recycle: Recycle all materials at home and at school.
- Burn less fossil fuels: Slowly get rid of any machine or vehicle that burns gas.
- New laws/regulations: Give large companies that pollute too much heavy fines.
