ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Residential Schools

Today was Orange Shirt Day. Students learned about the history of residential schools and why we wear orange shirts on this day every year. We primed the students with some background information on Phyllis Webstad and increased their background knowledge with a short video clip of some stories that came out of the St. Joseph Residential school. We also did a read aloud of 'I am Not a Number' and the students engaged in a related writing activity. They understand how important it is to remember and acknowledge what happened in our country's past. Tonight's PAR includes using their paragraph templates to write about 'ORANGE SHIRT DAY'.
IMPORTANT:

Bring your collage and materials to school tomorrow to work on in class.
Bring any materials you need to work on your Plant I.D. project tomorrow. (You may need some form of technology)

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete/Mark/Correct Pg. 8-9

Today, we learned a lot about residential schools and had some heavy discussions in class.
Mr. Bains continued teaching you about paragraph writing. Today, you will use the ideas you wrote down on your handouts to write a paragraph.
Paragraph topic: Orange Shirt Day (THINK ABOUTS - What is it? Why was it created? What do we have it? What happened? etc)
LEARNING INTENTION:
I can write supporting sentences using examples taken from today's lesson (2 video clips and read aloud story - refer to your handout).
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body (supporting sentences), and conclusion
2.) In your body/supporting sentences, use some transition words like - For example, To illustrate, In addition to, etc.
3.) Include at least 3 supporting details from what you wrote in class.
4.) Check for the givens/conventions (spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure).
5.) Read at least one other paragraph and give your classmate a few things to improve on based on the above criteria.
6.) Edit/revise your original paragraph based on peer feedback or a self-assessment.

Have a great day!

Today, Mr. Bains demonstrated real-world connections to order of operations. The students were fully engaged because Mr. Bains made his expectations crystal clear with our C-Chart for 'During Lessons'. Action criteria not only makes expectations clear for students, but also for teachers. In the afternoon, students continued learning about the inquiry process in the library with Mrs. Altman. They will do a practice mini-inquiry before delving into an inquiry project on early humans. Don't forget tomorrow is ORANGE SHIRT DAY!

IMPORTANT:

Wear an orange shirt tomorrow for Orange shirt day!
Make sure your parents sign your planners if you were asked to have it signed.

Happy Monday everyone! It was a beautiful today! It was a nice change from the rain we received last week. Today, students dove deeper into order of operations and writing engaging hooks for their paragraphs. We will learn more about body paragraphs later this week. We are also aiming to complete our collages and Plant I.D. projects by the end of the week. Students will also learn more about reading strategies to deepen their comprehension of what they read.

IMPORTANT:

Bring all ART / COLLAGE materials to school tomorrow (pictures, cuttings, 3D object, etc).

Let's LEARN!

Today, students made progress on their personal collages. All students are expected to add pictures of themselves, family, friends, and other things outlined on your criteria handouts. In the afternoon, students continued to learn about order of operations and introductory sentences (hooks). We ended the day with PE outside at the end of the day. Let's get the year started off on the right foot! Complete your daily assignments and homework so you don't fall behind!

IMPORTANT:

Bring all collage materials to school (including personal photos, pictures, 3D object, etc)
Bring all your research (Science).

Today, students started their Plant I.D. projects by getting together with their groups and dividing up the work with each of their group members. They are respecting indigenous traditions of learning about nature and their environments. This will help them appreciate nature and their communities on a deeper level. In math, they started learning about order of operations and also started their unit on paragraph writing by learning about engaging hooks. We are starting to get comfortable with our daily routines and our way of learning! Keep it up!

IMPORTANT:

Keep up with the daily work! Don't fall behind! Complete your daily 'POST A RESPONSE' assignments by following the success criteria!

It seems as though she is starting to trust her more than she did compared to when she first arrived at her house.

- intro (engaging hook - Think back to what Mr. Bains taught you today!)

Applied Design, Science, and Technology (ADST)

Today, students started the day off with an engaging Applied Design, Science, and Technology learning activity. The learning intention was: I can collaborate with others to reach a common goal. The purpose of this was to build a tower with limited supplies within a short time frame. Students planned, collaborated, and build their towers. This gave them some background knowledge on what was needed to collaborate successfully with others. We created an action criteria chart (C-Chart) for collaboration immediately following this activity! Later, they continued learning about place value, completed a writing self-assessment, and started their Social Studies Unit on the Inquiry process with Mrs. Altman.

IMPORTANT:

Place Value

Today, students started the day off with some community building. Soon after, Mr. Bains taught his first math lesson on Place Value. His lesson was fun and engaging. Students learned about place value and started working in their JUMP Math books. In the afternoon, students worked on their personal collages and learned about two separate reading strategies. They learned how to set a purpose and how to use their background knowledge to make connections.

IMPORTANT:

Bring your Jump Math books back tomorrow.

Congratulations to everyone on a successful first week! We have set the expectations for the year and are the learning is in full swing! On Friday, the students had a busy day of learning! They continued learning about the 'LEARNING PROCESS' through the lens of the BIG 6 Learning Principles and their name card assignment and their personal collages. Students will learn to take full ownership of their learning by following learning intentions, co-creating success criteria, asking questions, going through the self/peer assessment process, and responding to timely descriptive feedback to push their learning forward. It is looking to be a fun and exciting year with the students of div 1!

IMPORTANT:
1.) Bring a mobile device (tablet or laptop) on a daily basis to use when needed. We want to avoid sharing school technology as much as humanly possible. Keep in mind, you are 100% responsible for your device. If you are unable to bring one, I will provide one to you.

2.) Collect pictures, drawings, 3D objects, etc for your personal collage and bring them with you ON MONDAY so you can work on it at school on Monday.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

You will begin your 'JUMP MATH' lessons this week. Your first lesson will be on 'PLACE VALUE'.

2.) ART:

Name Cards are due on Monday as well as your self-assessment criteria sheet.
Bring materials to use for your personal collage on Monday. Refer to your criteria sheet.

3.) READING:

Daily reading requirement: 30 minutes.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Mr. Bains, Mrs. Kidd, and I want to really learn about your personalities.
Write a structured paragraph explaining a little bit more about who you are that we may not yet know about you. For example, maybe you are a classically trained pianist. Explain how long you have been playing and a few details about your experience as a pianist.
LEARNING INTENTION:
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Use a standard paragraph structure (intro, body w/ supporting sentences, and conclusion)
2.) Make your introductory sentence engaging! Make us want to read your paragraph.
3.) In your body, include at least 3 different things about you that you want to tell your teachers. Also explain a little bit about each of the points you tell us about.
4.) In your conclusion, tie up your paragraph and end your paragraph smoothly.

6.) NEW: Read one other person's paragraph and reply to them by giving them ONE suggestion to improve their paragraphs. Your descriptive feedback to them should be specific and related to one of the success criteria points above.

Today, students dove deeper into the BIG 6 Learning Principles. They continued to follow the co-created success criteria for their name cards and they also co-created new success criteria for their personal collages. We co-create the success criteria from 'EXTENDING' quality work with the students to make it more meaningful to them. In the morning, students went for a nature walk with Mr. Fisher and Mr. Bains to collect specimens for their Plant I.D. projects for Science. It was yet another wonderful day of learning! #TheLearningNeverStops

Math Facts

Today, students learned a little about digital citizenship, how to co-create success criteria, worked on their name-cards, and did some math review. In addition to this, we had a book talk about 'ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S' and we started our first read aloud together. We will do a little bit of math review before starting on our Gr. 7 materials. We have been paired up with Mr. Fisher's class as part of our learning pod so all Gr. 7 students have an opportunity to interact with each other while maintaining coid protocols. #TheLearningNeverStops
IMPORTANT:

THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS

The first few days of school have been absolutely amazing! We have been setting the expectations for the rest of the year! We created some behavioural expectations with C-Charts, reviewed safety protocols, started learning about the Big 6 Learning Principles, and completed several pre-assessments in several subject areas. The purpose of the pre-assessments are to get a baseline of where you are in your learning and is not evaluative. Please check the website on a daily basis for updates! And remember, 'THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS'!

IMPORTANT:

Please bring your own charged mobile device on a daily basis to facilitate your learning when needed (phone, tablet, iPad, laptop for use in class when needed). Keep in mind you are 100% responsible for your own device.

LEARNING:
1.) WITH PARENTS:

Review the class website with your parents.
Explain to them what the 'POST A RESPONSE' is.
Watch 'Austin's Butterfly' with your parent and explain to them how it relates to how you will learn this year!

Welcome to everyone in Mr. Hong's class! I was happy to meet most of you over the last few days! I am extremely excited to be teaching all of you this year! I can already tell our year is going to be full of amazing learning! I am looking forward to teaching you and helping you learn! Mrs. Kidd and Mr. Bains will be with us as well helping your learn! I am happy to see that not even a pandemic could stop you from coming to school to learn! Can you count up the number of times I said 'learn' in this paragraph?!?!?!?

IMPORTANT:

Be sure to email your 'HEALTH ASSESSMENT CHECK' completed and signed by your parents. If you don't know your PEN, you do not have to include it on the form.

Your first homework assignment is to write a welcome back message (paragraph format) to your classmates and your teachers!
You can include things you wrote in class today on your 'ALL ABOUT ME' handout. For example, likes, favourite subject, least favourite subject, hobbies, etc.
Include an engaging intro (hook), body, and conclusion in your paragraph.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can introduce myself to my classmates and my teachers.
