FUN DAY FOR SOARING!

Today, the Laurier Students earned a 'SOAR TICKET FUN DAY!" The students received this privilege for their amazing behaviour over the last few months. Students were super, outstanding, awesome, and respectful 1000 times! SO AMAZING! Keep SOARING and LIFTING EACH OTHER UP on a daily basis!

1.) PAR: Complete yesterday's PAR according to the criteria! Just posting your poem isn't enough! Read the success criteria carefully!

2.) MATH: Complete the last page of the booklet, mark, and correct your work.

3.) LA/WORD WORK: Quiz tomorrow. No need to submit word work activity for this week.

4.) MAP:

Due tomorrow! You should at least start colouring after you fine line.
You need to mark/label 3 capital cities
You must also mark/label 2 historical/significant places on your map.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Complete yesterday's PAR according to the instructions and criteria.
Check to make sure you completed everything asked!

PINK SHIRT DAY

Self-regulate and be kind to everyone!

Today, we celebrated Pink Shirt Day by wearing Pink to support Kindness! Take your kindess to new heights! This Pink Shirt Day, and every day, let's LIFT EACH OTHER UP! The Theme for this year's Pink Shirt Day is 'Life each other up". This is a simple but powerful message encourgaing us to look beyond our differences and celebrate the things that make us unique. When we lift each other up, we see past the things that separate us and see instead the things that unite people! LIFT SOMEONE UP TODAY AND EVERY DAY!

1.) MATH: 2 more pages in your math booklet

2.) SOCIALS:

Complete your math planning sheet for your Africa map
Complete your grid and outline of the Africa map on your blank paper. You can fine-line the map if you like, but leave the grid in pencil (not fine-liner)
You must hand this in when you walk into class tomorrow morning at 9am.

Today was Pink Shirt Day. We celebrated Kindness in all shapes and sizes.
Write a poem in any style that best shows what Pink Shirt Day is all about.

Your fellow classmate, Amy, is doing some fundraising for a worthy cause! She will be bringing in cookies to sell tomorrow go towards the Vancouver Canucks Hospice. Please bring any donations you can spare to buy some cookies! Let's do this! You guys did an amazing job for the Food Bank in December! Let's see how much we can help Amy raise some funds for people who need it!

IMPORTANT: Bring money to buy cookies from Amy tomorrow! The donations collected will go towards a worthy cause!

Particle Theory of Matter

Today, students continued to learn about the particle theory of matter. They completed an experiment using salt and water of varying temperatures. Students will complete their observations, diagrams, conclusion, and explanations over the weekend. We will work on our formal lab write-ups on Tuesday. Click here to practice the particle theory of matter simulation. Be sure to play around with the different states of matter at varying temperatures. What do you notice? What happens to the particles What happens to the space between them? What happens to the speed of the particles bumping into each other?

IMPORTANT:

Arrive at school between 7:35 - 7:50. You will depart for Seymour Mountain as soon as your driver and all students have arrived.
Make sure you remember all your ski/snowboarding clothing and equipment.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES: If you didn't complete yesterday's 'BLACK HISTORY' PAR, you must complete this before doing todays.

3.) SCIENCE: Complete Science lab handouts.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Today was a day full of learning! Students dove deeper into the Novel Approach. We modelled what a book club discussion on thinking and learning questions might look like and we also created C-Charts for 'Book Club Discussions'. We have set the expectations and will see how the students do with their guided discussions. They will meet with Mr. Fisher and I on a regular basis to help push their thinking further on their quest to find the big idea of reading materials!

IMPORTANT: Class/Team photo day tomorrow.

1.) LA: Gift of Words and thinking and learning questions are due tomorrow.

2.) MATH: First 2 pages of new booklet. We will come back to the booklet from last week once we have completed this one.

Be Kind to Everyone

Digital Citizenship is a topic students need to build background knowledge in. You do not have background knowledge in this area and it is something that cannot be assumed. Today, we saw the 'TO THIS DAY' video by Shane Koyczan. Parents, please take time to check this video out with your child and discuss some of the issues that pop up. We discussed the negative aspects of bullying, social media, and gossiping. Hopefully today's lesson makes you think a bit more about these issues.

IMPORTANT:

Students will be participating in 2 workshops at the Oakridge Mac store on Match 31st from 10-11:30 and on April 14th from 10:00 - 11:30. We will walk over to the mall as a class.

1.) LA:

Complete character development handout for Touching Spirit Bear.
Include at least one point for beginning/middle/end for each section on the graphic organizer.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we spent a great deal of time discussing citizenship.
One of the key things we learned was we should always be kind to one another.

Chemistry

Today, students completed a pre-assessment for the chemistry unit. Students regularly engage in self-assessments. This allows students to think critically about what they know and areas they need to improve in. We will be learning about matter, the particle theory, and how elements work together to create different compounds. Students will refine their ability to conduct experiments, take observations, and complete lab write-ups using the scientific method.

Today, we started the second stage of the Novel Approach. Students learned about the format and structure. We will be continuing our learning of reading/comprehension strategies and learning about Gift of Words, Thinking and Learning Questions, and finding the big idea of picture books. We will first do a practice book with both classes. Then, students will get their own picture books and work independently and collaboratively.

2.) MATH:

I will reteach the lesson the substitute taught you yesterday.
Complete as much of the 3 pages as you are able to.

Hogan's Alley

Today, you learned about different elements of a story. You reviewed setting and learned about character development, conflicts, and the plot curve. After your lesson, you had time to practice using these elements in a reading activity. Your next major writing assignment will be coming up in the next week or so. You will use what you have in your hands (CREATIVITY) and you will create your own story while focusing on the 6 Traits of Good Writing and the elements of a story. Start brainstorming ideas in your head about what you might write your creative story about!

Learning Survey with Ms. Samiei

Today, students participated in Fitness Friday. This got their energy flowing that prepared them to work with their little buddies form the Gr. 1/2 class in Ms. Millman's class. Their roles today were to give peer feedback to their little buddies. They used criteria built by Ms. Millman's class to give the students descriptive feedback on their writing assignment. Engaging in this process really makes the students think about their work based on criteria that will help them reach success. In the afternoon, students participated in a learning survey with Ms. Samiei and then ended the day with Music.

Today, students learned about elements of a story. They learned a little bit about conflict, characters, and setting. Then, we dove deep into 'SETTINGS' and the students learned about time, place, and using adjectives and their senses to describe the setting of a story. We will continue to learn about elements of a story as we read through 'Touching Spirit Bear'.

IMPORTANT: All students who informed me of their mini-school applications have had their report cards forwarded to the respective schools.

Megan's Pastel Art

Today, students added to their background knowledge on the topic of lab safety. Students will be working with various materials during our chemistry unit so they need to learn how to handle materials properly. Sometimes we assume many things are common sense, but it is only common sense if you have the background knowledge to make an appropriate inference. Explicitly learning safety procedures is important in order to prevent any avoidable accidents.

IMPORTANT:

If your parents have not filled out the camping volunteer forms, please submit those to Mr. Fisher ASAP.

1.) MATH: Pg 157 #8-15 - Complete, MARK, and correct at home.

2.) LA/WORD WORK:

Complete your Word Work for Friday.
Find one sentence, create a sentence based on the one you find, list the part of speech, and 1 synonym)

3.) SCIENCE: Duotangs must be handed in tomorrow morning with your completed scientific method labs (Growing glowing crystals).

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you had a lesson on lab safety. Use what you learned to write a creative story about how an accident could have been prevented.

SKI SCHOOL DAY 2 - CHECK!

The Mountain Main - Mr. Fisher

Yesterday, students completed their second day of ski school at Seymour Mountain. We were pleased to see how happy and how much the students have learned so far. Some students who had never gone before are now skiing/snowboarding independently all the way down some of the ski runs. Their instructors continue to give them coaching (descriptive feedback) and the students continue to take the feedback to improve their ski/snowboarding abilities. The learning process and the BIG 6 exists everywhere!
